And when the kiddo starts figuring out how to take their own clothes off (like at nap time, when you think they're sleeping, but they're really stripping in bed and smearing the poop from their diaper on the blankets), zippers are a mystery for longer than pulling snaps apart!
I like snaps for newborns. I worry about zipping up their skin. And like not having to expose their whole chest to the cold to change a diaper. Snaps are easier to take a quick diaper check peak. But as they get bigger and won’t sit still for two seconds, snaps become a serious pain. Reverse zippers are always cool though.
Google just informed me that this was 40% off at Nordstrom...I couldn't not get it! It's pink, which will satisfy my mom's obsession with all things girly/pink, and it's dinosaurs, which makes me happy because idk how many "girl" clothes have dinos on them??
What’s your baby clothes list for the south? We have been living in coastal Georgia for a year now. Do I even bother with long sleeves? There’s been a few times I wore a long sleeve but had to change lol. I know I’ve been gifted some outfits with long sleeves and figured that would be enough.
@alexa_94 Layers! I live where it doesn't get cold until Jan/Feb and even then some days aren't really cold. I found the 3 piece outfits from Carters that have the onesies, pants and a sweater worked great last time around. I would put the sweater on if it was a little chilly or we were inside somewhere cooler but it was nice I could just add or take off as needed without changing outfits.
@alexa_94 we live in TX and we do lots of layers. Lots of onesies (mostly short sleeve but some long sleeve) and pants, thin sleepers, thin jackets. DS was born in October and he rarely wore anything more than a onesie and pants.
As I was reading thru this I realize I must be crazy. A lot of STM said their kids lived in sleepers the first month or two, was there any moms who actually got their babies dressed most days? Just me? Also, I might have been lucky because she didn't spit up really, and we had maybe 1 or 2 diaper mishaps ever. I'd get her ready for the day after morning nap and she'd be in that outfit until we got ready for bed. I also never took her out in sleepers though, so maybe I just have issues
@KFrob some days it was easy outfits like that, usually when I knew we were in for the day. If we had errands to run or had plans it was usually an actual outfit. I didn't realize though that wasn't common apparently?
@mamabear0416 I usually dressed my son in something other than his jammies. He usually wore a onesie though when we were home and would wear nice clothes when we went out. But he was also a March baby so it was warm during the day. My daughter was born in late December during a cold winter, so I’d often keep her in her jammies (or change her into a new one) during the day unless we were going somewhere.
I figure if I stay in my PJs all day when I'm home the baby will be doing the same. If we go out I think I'd dress him in an outfit for the cute factor!

@mommy2ane my daughter was an April baby so I didn't have to deal with it being cold as a baby. It will be hit or miss this time around weather wise and I am a little nervous about if I will have her dressed warm enough or not too warm most days.
@chyvie I am so that mom who rolls up looking like a hot mess while my daughter is perfectly put together! I do try to get somewhat ready though, it makes me feel better. I may not change out of pjs but I'll try and do my hair and some light make up.
@mamabear0416 yea working from home the last 2 years has changed my wardrobe so much. I'm always just wearing comfortable clothes like yoga pants, t-shirts and sweaters. I doubt I'll be getting dressed up once baby comes!

@mamabear0416 I got DD dressed every day until I went back to work. Once she started going to daycare I would send her in sleepers every day so her cute outfits didn't get ruined. I got her dressed all cute on the weekends (or evenings if we went anywhere). I have no idea if I will be the same with this kid or not. Sleepers are just so much easier.
UO: I never wear my pjs all day. Literally never. Even if I'm sick I'll put on yoga pants or something. The kids almost always get dressed as well. I'll take a newbie out in a sleeper sometimes, but usually not because they aren't great for baby carrying. Body suits and pants are our usual. I'm trying to think of other outfits you'd even choose. Like a dress? I just know before they have more body control bodysuits don't ride up. Dresses were kind of a pain unless they were super comfy ones.
@hellopartyof5 ok so then I guess I do change...into yoga pants at least. I still consider that more pjs than clothes though. But unless I am going out I don't put on "real clothes" most days. Also there are only certain places I'll wear yoga pants out to, drop off for school is one of them and my daughter complains I am wearing pjs.
And dresses was for special occasions only until DD was standing/walking, the couple times I put them on her as a baby she just seemed uncomfortable. I get a lot of the 2 piece sets that are some kind of shirt/tunic and leggings for outfits or rompers. And then just the basic bodysuit and pant/short. Even the playsuits without the feet I'll do, but footie pjs I just can't.
DD1 wore jammies only if we were leaving the house or a comfortable onesie. Going places I put a cute outfit on or a onesie with ruffle butt pants or something to match.
@mamabear0416 I always dressed DS. I didn’t even know sleepers all day were a thing until I noticed the parents of one of the babies at daycare did it. I seem to remember reading it, along with other stuff, helped them understand night and day.
@mamabear0416 I’ve always dressed the kids for the day. In my head, PJs are for night time, clothes for daytime. Usually just a onesie and pants, but they were always dressed in something. I don’t think I ever took any of them out in a sleeper. But I just bought a cute gender neutral sleeper to use as a going home outfit, so maybe this is the kid I get over that with

From a psychological perspective we are creatures of habit. The ritual of getting ready in the AM can help wake us up. I try making sure on my work from home days that I at least get up and put contacts in and such. I was trying to shower in the AM like usual, but that hasn't happened lately. The same with the act of getting ready for bed. Doing a similar routine every night (Putting them in PJs, putting lotion on/taking a bath, reading a book) helps signal our brains its bed time (and can help start things like melatonin release)
I just hit the last consignment sale before baby boy gets here and stocked up on nb and 0-3m clothes to get us through the holidays. Thankfully didn't go too crazy.
As far as the question of dressing baby in actual clothes vs sleepers...i got a couple cute nb outfits, especially for halloween but mostly he'll be in easy access sleepers. Once the newborn fog lifts i try to make sure to do outfits during the day and pjs at night to help set a routine and familiar ritual so he'll get used to it and better understand day vs night to help with sleep.
I'm hoping I still feel okay when the Just Between Friends sale comes in Mid-September. I really want to check it out, but there's a lot of line standing and that might be impossible at 36 weeks...
Sorry if I’m coming off dumb but this is what I have so far from friends and family. Where should I stock up? Or how much to add to each age? How many of each article of clothing are you ladies stocking up on?
@alexa_94 FTM here, so I won't be of much help...but if you haven't looked back at the earlier posts in this thread, I believe some other moms have posted what they are getting? (baby brain, can't remember lol). I thought I remember taking notes down a month or so ago based on what people shared, so definitely recommend looking back. I personally am not getting a lot of newborn clothes, because both DH and my side produce 9# babies, so I'm not expecting to get a lot of use out of them. Even at almost 3 weeks early, I was 7lb 11 oz, so I'm preparing for a big baby.
I'm trying not to get a lot of "seasonal" wear like winter coats, etc. because a) I live in the south, and b) you never know what size your baby will be in certain seasons. (But my mom did buy her a 6-12 mo fleece jacket (as part of a inside joke/funny story about my childhood...so idk if I'll use it this winter lol)
They've also mentioned not to wash everything ahead of time, because you never know how long your baby will stay in each stage, so you want to be able to return/exchange if you outgrow a stage quicker than you thought!
@alexa_94 It also depends on how often you plan on doing laundry. There will be a ton of spit up and poop explosions to deal with so you might want to plan on the possibility of multiple outfits per day and you'll want spare ones you can throw in a diaper bag and maybe even your car.
@alexa_94 Personally, I like to have at least 7 sleepers in every size so we can go a week without laundry. More is probably better though. I would say the same with outfits probably. Maybe a minimum of 10 in every size? Once they start having blowouts you will need extras. I usually keep two extra outfits in the diaper bag at all times just in case. DD liked to have blowouts in the car so I was rarely home when they happened. For this LO I think we have maybe 7 newborn sleepers, 10 newborn short-sleeve onesies, and 10 newborn long-sleeve onesies and maybe only 5 pairs of newborn pants. For 0-3 month I think we ended up with at least double that because people just kept giving us hand-me-downs in that size. For 3-6 month I have probably 15 sleepers and a bunch of random onesies that were given to us, but no actual outfits really. My guess is that this LO won't wear the majority of the onesies we have for him, but I would rather have too many than not enough.
@alexa_94 I wouldn't get anymore NB sizes and I'd wait to see how big or little baby is and how fast they are growing. Some people don't need to use NB sizes at all, my DD ended up being in there for maybe 2 weeks so we just got by on what we had. If you realize you need more you can order online and do store pick up, or amazon prime things. For your 3 mth clothing I'd stock up on sleepers. The least amount I'd have is 7, I think I have 8 currently. Also, you might want to consider the sleep gowns for the beginning, they make diaper changes during the night so much easier. I have 7 gowns. Next I would decide if you plan on getting baby changed out of the sleeper daily or not. We discussed that in this thread too. If you are a "we'll stay in sleepers mostly," than you don't need many onesies or outfits however if you are in the "we change out of sleepers daily" than you might want to stock up on more onesies or outfits. I always figure I have 2 either outfits or onesie/pant combo in my diaper bag at all times (I don't take out unless we need it and then restock if we have to use the diaper bag outfit) so that would bring you to having to do laundry to get thru the week with what you have now. I know some people do laundry often, but I know I am not one of those people. As for other sizes I would wait to see the growth pattern before stocking up too much. My daughter grew fast until about 5 months and then hardly grew until after year so in the beginning we went thru sizes quickly and then stalled and she stayed in the same size for half the year. With online shopping it is easier to just get what you need when you need it so you don't overbuy and then end up with a bunch of clothes they never wear.
@alexa_94 depending on where you live, maybe add some newborn onesies so you have options and can rotate the sleepers if you’d like. I’m in Southern California so it’s still pretty warm during the day in October, but it cools down at night.
Sizing is definitely going to be a factor as well. My son was basically right on with his age and sizing until 2 but my daughter has been a size behind her age the entire time. She wore newborns for about 3 months. I actually had to get her more newborn items as we went since I had so little.
How often do you do laundry? Will it be a priority once baby is here? If not, you’re going to want to add more clothing. I think we average about 8 sleepers in the 3m, 6m and 9m clothing. I ended up getting more 3m sleepers since my son was born during a warm March and only had a couple and I added some long sleeve 3m onesies.
@mommy2ane I used to live in Temecula, that is actually where we are looking to buy our next house if we stay in CA. I loved it there! We are currently just north in the high desert (Apple Valley).
