I'm stealing this idea from July. I thought it would be nice to have place to talk about all the symptoms and emotions that go with the lead up to labor.
I'll start us off. So when I was 35 and 36 weeks i was having tons of contractions and was even put on light activity so I didn't go into labor to early.
Then, as soon as 37 weeks comes and everything slows down, and I'm barely having any cramping or contractions. I'm 3 days into 38 weeks and its the same thing. No amount of activity has changed anything.
I’m 38 weeks, 2cm and 80% effaced as of Friday. My doctor implied labor may be soon and quick. Kind of got my hopes up because I know it doesn’t mean anything certain. TMI but I’ve had really soft stools a couple of times which always makes me think I’ll go into labor soon because that’s what happened before DS1 was born. Knowing what to expect somewhat seems to be messing with my head more!
@laufisch 100% with you. I had 2 nights of 5-7 hours on a monitor, contractions 3-5 min apart. Sent home both times. Now that I’m 39w I have nothing. It’s so stupid and I’m seriously frustrated.
I’m being induced tomorrow morning, and I’m a head case today. I can’t concentrate, can’t seem to decide on anything that needs done, and have absolutely no desire for anything other than just staring at the ceiling.
I keep running through all the what-ifs. Since I’m trying 2VBaC, the only help I get is my water broken. So LO isn’t wanting to cooperate, I end up with a CS Thursday morning at the latest.
Then there is how will H handle it. He hasn’t been there for either of the other 2, and while he isn’t squeamish he isn’t terribly good at seeing anyone in pain. It’s just a whole bunch of UGH.

@lalala2004 with DD1 I swear to God I must have pooped out everything I've ever eaten during early labor. I know I didn't poop on the table because there was nothing left in me. I didn't poop until almost 4 days later. But with DD2 that did not happen at all. So weird. You just never know!
I will be 36w tomorrow and have my GBS test etc. I've put myself on activity restriction as much as possible because he has been sitting so low and causing me so much crotch pain already that I'm nervous about going too early. As soon as I hit 37w IT IS ON and eviction notices will be forthcoming but I'll probably be like @laufisch and suddenly become comfortable and cramp free again.
I keep having weird dreams about my water breaking and the baby being big (specifically 8lbs 10oz which is more than a pound bigger than my larger kid and two pounds bigger than my smaller one, so big for me). It's freaking me out.
I put the same thing in the weekly appointment thread, but holy paranoia!
I'm a nervous wreck about going too early (wouldn't ruin, but would definitely mess with my maternity leave and insurance). On top of that, I've been waking up MOTN with a sore pelvic region and can't tell if they are contractions of not. I'm so worried that I'm so uncomfortable that I won't be able to tell when I'm actually having a contraction. I've done this once before, but my water broke and I was strep b positive, so we went right in.
Yes to the softer stool these days! And my BH are super strong and frequent some days, and less so on others. This pregnancy thing is for the birds.
@7425cait my crotch has been sore for weeks, like I've pulled my groin. I think it's just because he dropped so early, but it's freaking me out because my last labor was only 4 hours start to finish and my hospital is 45 minutes away. Sometimes I can't tell if I'm having a contraction or he is just moving around a lot. He's so low that when he has hiccups I feel them below my pubic bone.
I had GBS with #1 but not #2. I get tested tomorrow but I really hope I don't have it this time because I'm anticipating a fast labor and my hospital won't administer the epidural until the first dose of penicillin is complete (I was not impressed with that policy with DD1 as she was sunny side up and I was having brutal back labor for almost 8 hours before I finally got my glorious drugs).
I think it's great if women don't want an epidural and are able to give birth without it, but I very much want mine and have no desire to push out this kid drug free!
@delujm0 yes to the hiccups below my pelvic bone. It's crazy. Also with the crotch pain, my doc said it could be vericose veins. Eek. I haven't seen any yet, but sometimes I feel like I was kicked in the crotch. It's also way worse when I lay flat on my side. If I'm inclined it helps.
DD was 3 days late, so I assumed this one would follow the same way. Now I keep hearing these stories of second kids coming weeks early.
Gah, I've started responses on every thread over the last couple of weeks, and every time I get distracted before posting it, and then by the time I get back to it, it's too old to be worth posting. So, sorry guys. Good thing it's not on me to keep things going here.
As for labor signs: Last time, I don't remember a single symptom of labor before my water broke at 37+6 (and very few after, labor didn't start and I had to be induced). While there's a part of me that fully expects it to happen exactly the same way this time (which would mean my water will break tomorrow night!) I know it is going to be different. So I'm now dissecting every sensation I have.
I have had some light period-like cramps for short spans of time for the last couple of days. I've had a lot of Braxton Hicks contractions, some of which were mildly painful. Every time I start considering timing them, they stop.
My pelvic pain has gotten worse, which coincides with several people commenting on how low she's dropped. They've had to work pretty hard to get a good picture of the head during my ultrasounds last week and yesterday, since the head was so low in the pelvis.
They don't do cervical exams in my practice, so I have no idea about dilation or effacement. They just hand us swabs and send us into the restroom for the group B strep tests, so they really don't go down there at all.
My mom decided that 8/1/18 would be a cool birthday, but I'm don't see that happening, since it's tomorrow. But I'm pretty psyched that tomorrow is August!
@Secretstapler same with me, I start responses and then never get to finish them. So I'm reading everyone's, just not necessarily replying to everyone! Sending out all the love and supportive vibes to everyone on here though!!!
@laufisch sorry I have a fear of that happening to me too
So if it weren't for this intense crotch/pelvic pain, I think I could deal with the rest of my pregnancy symptoms pretty ok. I keep flipping between *I want this baby out!!!* to *I'm so not ready yet!!! How are we so close now?!*
I also keep waking up in the middle of the night wondering if I woke up b/c of a contraction and if I'm in labor. That's how it went with DD1 so my brain is thinking that the exact same thing will happen for some reason. I'm also getting paranoid about my water randomly breaking at work or in public... I should just wear a pad already.
Been a primary lurker on the July/Aug board but glad to see this thread up! EDD is today 8/1 but as of my appt yesterday no progress since last week so induction is scheduled for Sunday night. Hoping baby will change it's mind before then! Sending good vibes to all the August Mama's, home stretch!
I was feeling amazing, loving pregnancy until this weekend. 37 weeks have hit hard and PMS like back pains have kicked in, as well as more stool softness, and a big time lack of sleep. I had an ECV on Monday to flip my frank breech baby (successfully, yay!) but wow I've been pretty sore since. Now that she is head down, I get these awful pains in my crotch. I keep telling myself that they are happy reminders that she is where she should be, but ouch. We will do a cervix check next week, but with no contractions yet, I think I still have a ways to go.
It's funny that literally a week ago I was so nervous about baby coming, and now I'm dying to meet her.
39 weeks today and fighting a nasty summer cold with a bad sore throat and painful cough. I’ve read online some other women have come down with colds the week or so before labor but I’m sure it’s just coincidence. I am hoping their claims that after baby is out the symptoms pretty much go away are true! All I know is that coughing this much with this big of a belly is not fun. And forget about being able to sleep much. Part of me just hopes I will go into labor so I can at least recover from the illness without all the pregnancy pains.
I was diagnosed with polyhydramnios (too much amniotic fluid) last week at 36 weeks. Cervix was closed then. This week cervix is dilated a fingertip, but they want me to go ahead and have her whenever I'll agree to it but definitely before 39 weeks. I'm not having any contractions or Braxton Hicks. I'm a little crampy in my lower uterus at night when I'm sleeping. Maybe that's BH? Also a little lightning crotch when she's moving around good. But other than that, I'm just really uncomfortable. My belly is extra big, feet swell, back hurts, hips hurt but not too bad. I can't say I want to go on like this for the next 3 wks, but I wasn't prepared to hear that they want her out so soon, lol. I go back tomorrow for a NST, and I have come around to having her within the week. I'll do whatever is safest for her, because I am worried about what's causing the extra fluid. She's big, so maybe that's why. She was estimated at 6 lbs 9 oz last Monday.
I've had a few days where my body has been prepping with tmi loose stools every time I eat. I started having some cramps last night that are still very much about today on and off as well as sore back and the odd contraction here and there. I've had a really sore pelvis and lightening crotch for ages so I'm getting hopeful. I'm 37 weeks. We are due to start sweeps at 38 so I'm hoping he's just starting himself.
I'm surprised to hear that a decent amount of people do sweeps before their due dates...is that because you'd otherwise have to be induced early due to medical condition (like GD, etc)? My doctor won't sweep until the 40 week appointment. I've never made it that far but I've also never been dilated at all prior to the day I wound up delivering, so it's never been an option for me.
I'm surprised too. I wasn't ever offered a sweep with DD1 and I had her at 41 weeks. I think my Dr might be offering it now at my 39 week appointment because I'm in so much pain. ? The combination of parenting an active toddler and being in this much pain just sucks big time.
So I think I've gone from nesting mode to just giving up because of the pain and lack of energy. Is giving up a sign of labor?? Lol. I've got all the major things taken care of, I think... But I only have half a week supply of diapers and nothing in the fridge.
@fishee333 i hear you on the pain, i have a recently turned 3 year old and an almost 14 month old who isn't walking yet at home. Every time I have to lift the 3 year old in or out of the bathtub I wind up cramping. And God help me if I have to carry the baby up the stairs. Fortunately she really likes climbing the stairs now so I've just been letting her do that while I follow her to make sure she doesn't fall. It's a mess.
Since I've never dilated before being in labor I don't think I'll ever have the opportunity for a sweep, but I don't think I'd do it until at least 39 weeks unless I was staring down the barrel of a medically necessary induction either way. I should also add that I've never gone overdue so I probably don't fully grasp how difficult that is.
I still need to get the 14 month old out of the nursery and into her big girl bedroom. I'm in no way prepared for this yet haha. I'm hopefully going to get that done this weekend. And then set up the nursery with baby clothes again.
For the moms momming 9 months preg with toddlers, this is H A R D ! I lost my mucus plug and had a bunch of cramping Tuesday but it’s since died down. Has anyone had experience with losing their plug? It didn’t happen to me with DS and I’ve heard it can mean nothing but curious for real life experiences
DS born 04/22/15, Pregnant again 03/01/17 however loss due to PPROM at 20+6 weeks now TTC rainbow
@delujm0 Oh my you've got it tough with 2 littles!! My 2.5 yo still likes being carried a lot, and we have 2 flights of stairs in my house (her bedroom is upstairs and the playroom and TV room is downstairs in the basement) and she likes going up and down and up and down all day. She had a full on meltdown yesterday because I wouldn't (couldnt) carry her downstairs. And it was like a sad anxiety meltdown, not a snobby terrible two meltdown, and it broke my heart. I feel so guilty I can't be the mom she wants me to be right now
@shri929 With DD1 I lost my mucus plug at around 10pm and had my daughter at 10am the next morning... I had already been having contractions all day though before I lost it.
@shiri929 I lost my plug with #1 around 3am and was having regular contractions by 9am. She was born at 11:55pm (but she was sunny side up so i had to push for 2.5 hours of that).
With #2 i had bloody show before contractions started but never noticed my plug falling out...must have either been mixed in with the blood or come out when my water broke at the hospital.
Hello. I'm just here to say, "Get this kid out of me."
I've been experiencing some cramping like when I get my period. And once I had a vaguely strong contraction. My BMs have been easier. And hoo boy is it like water works down there.
I've generally given up on carrying my 2.5 year old, but he seems to be okay with it. I can't imagine all those stairs, I can barely get around our single story house.
I don't remember losing my mucus plug at all last time. This time, I had a tiny bit of something yesterday, but nothing since. Just enough to get my hopes up.
My BH have picked up, but are only occasionally painful and never timeable.
Pooping has become easier, which is at least a relief, whether or not it's a sign of something.
I don't think my practice does membrane sweeps. Maybe if you ask for it, but they are generally really hands off. The only thing they said they can recommend if you're trying to get labor started is red raspberry leaf tea after 36 weeks and evening primrose oil after 38 weeks. I hit 38 weeks yesterday, so I'm considering getting those.
Well I had a dream that I was having contractions all night, but I think it was just baby pushing on me a bunch. So nothing. Just a bad night of sleep. Waiting for something to happen...
So, FFSC... I spent last night taking online quizzes about whether or not I am about to go into labor. Of the three quizzes:
One told me I will probably go into labor in the next few days.
One told me I got 6 out of 58 points and will probably not go into labor any time soon.
One told me they were seriously concerned about my symptoms and I am not in labor, but I should see a doctor right away. It did not specify which symptoms were concerning, so I went back over the questions and have no idea what they're worried about.
So, clearly, one of the quizzes is valid and the others are total junk. And I'm going to go into labor any moment.
@fishee333 I feel you! That happened to me the other night too. I've been having such insomnia these days. I just sit up tossing and turning for an hour or two every night, trying to get comfortable or worrying that I'm contracting.
Holy stretching pain. Anyone else experiencing a pulling/stretching sensation in their pelvis? I'm fine when sitting, but when I stand up it's uncomfortable and takes me a few minutes to stand up straight.
@delujm0 Woop! I keep trying to explain to this baby that we're totally ready for her, so she can come anytime. She hasn't taken us up on it yet.
@7425cait I have tons of pelvic discomfort when I stand, but I'm at the point where I'm having trouble distinguishing between the bone and the uterus and the other muscles down there. It does often loosen up after a few minutes.
I'm only 37 weeks this week and have no idea what all I should be paying attention to, so these comments are quite helpful!
I have noticed a definite change in my aches, pains, and discomforts in just the last week or two. I can't sleep worth a hoot anymore, either side is horribly uncomfortable in my pelvis/back and back sleeping is now completely out, boo. So I spend all night going from one side to the other every 30-45 minutes trying to find some semblance of comfort. Needless to say my light-sleeper husband is suffering right along with me. lol
Most of yesterday and so far this morning is mild menstrual type cramps, off and on, nothing regular so far as I can tell. And yesterday it felt like I was in the bathroom most of the day, as with the cramps came the urge to #2 every time.
There has been a noted increase of pressure inside my pelvis, and occasionally the sensation of a poorly placed tampon when I sit down sometimes. All of my nerve endings seem confused. I can't seem to tell if I have to pee for real or not, sometimes it feels like I REALLY have to go, I rush to the bathroom and it's a trickle. Other times I don't notice I have a full bladder until I'm walking or the truck bounces just right as I'm driving and it hurts.
@neeraja_k sounds like your baby has dropped in the last few days. These are basically all symptoms of that...this is kid #3 for me and they've dropped earlier each time. This guy seriously dropped at like 34 weeks. It is terrible.
The menstrual type cramps and BMs could be a sign of early labor, but they also might not be. I'd be on the lookout for regular cramping and loss of mucus plug or bloody show.
If you put your hands under your bump and lift it up a bit when you're trying to pee, it sometimes moves the baby enough to let you mostly empty your bladder. With my last 2 deliveries I've been so excited when they placed my catheter post epidural because it's been the first time my bladder has felt completely empty in FOREVER.
@delujm0 LOL I'm excited about the catheter too!!! Another bonus about getting an epidural that no one really talks about. Good tip about lifting the belly when peeing, I'll have to try that. I've been shifting around trying to empty it lately and it helps a little but not much.
I wish our bodies would magically give us a good night of sleep the day/night before labor. This lack of sleep really sucks, and I hate how it's getting worse. @neeraja_k I'm up about every 30 minutes too, either shifting my body because if my hip pain or going pee. Labor is going to be exhausting! Another bonus of getting an epidural though, I'll get to rest a little bit before pushing...
Re: Labor Lead Up
Then, as soon as 37 weeks comes and everything slows down, and I'm barely having any cramping or contractions. I'm 3 days into 38 weeks and its the same thing. No amount of activity has changed anything.
Super frustrating.
