Yesterday evening, I welcomed Maxwell Hamilton into the world at 29w3d. Max came out butt first via c-section. My Mom was present in the OR with me.
He weighed in at a whooping 2lbs 13 oz (I guess I’m going to have to buy newborn-sized clothes after all...)
We are both doing well. Details in the spoiler below the picture; may be upsetting to some.
Well, as the doctors warned me, severe pre-eclampsia can escalate very quickly. Yesterday morning, my BPs were a touch high, but over the course of the day, continued to escalate and were no longer controlled by the medications. The decision was made in the middle of the afternoon to deliver the Baby.
Blast was in breech position as he has been pretty much anytime we looked. As such, he came into the world via c-section. My Mom was present with me throughout the process, which is a good thing, because I was a complete basket case.
All of the doctors and nurses were wonderful and supportive. (I had a continuous supply of kleenex.) My OB honored my request for a clear drape in the OR; I was unable to see the actual delivery because of tears and big boobs, but Mom did.
Mom accompanied me to recovery, and then left me with a small party of friends who had come to provide support. There was a whole, somewhat amusing conversation about whether one of my friends was going to tell his parents where he was (instead of a family BBQ), because he doesn’t think they’ll believe the baby isn’t his.
As of right now, we are both doing really well. Blast was intubated but is already breathing an air mix level of oxygen. (The perinatologist said that the intubation was pretty routine for his gestational age; the question is how long he will stay on it.) The hospital provided me with a pump as soon as I was ready, and I have been able to start pumping colostrum; this thrilled the people in the NICU.
As for me, I honestly feel better than I have in a while. I didn’t realize how hard my body had been pushing until the pushing stopped. My BPs are comfortably back in the normal range, and based on my pre-op lab work yesterday, the pre-e does not appear to have progressed to a point to negatively impact my organs.
As sucky as the last several days have been, I am so grateful for this outcome. Max and I are healthy, and I have literally been surrounded by people who love me and want the best for both of us.
Thank you again to all of you for being such awesome support throughout this journey. I’ll be back to the forums here soon for you all; hopefully, we don’t see any more babies until late September!!!
Firstly, congratulations! He is so sweet and I hope that you both have a quick and positive recovery. I'm so sorry that you had to go through what I'm sure was a very scary process and that you weren't about to take him later to term. But embrace that he's here and he's yours and he's perfect! All the best for the next few weeks! Keep us updated!
Congratulations on the birth of your beautiful boy!! I’m glad to hear you are doing well and sound to be in good spirits. You and Maxwell will continue to be in my thoughts. I hope the rest of your hospital stay and his NICU stay are uneventful. I am so glad you were both able to get the care you needed!
Happy Birthday sweet Maxwell! It looks like you didn’t want to wait any longer to meet your mama! @knottieamusements I hope you get feeling better and are able to spend lots of time with sweet Maxwell.
