Maternity Clothes faves/sales/misc.

I didn't see anywhere else this would fit, so hopefully I'm not one of those annoying AW posters. If so, fight me, I can take it.

Can we just have a maternity clothes catch-all thread here? It's been 4 years since I've bought any, and I thought others may benefit from any clothes info anyone can drop here.

Where is your favorite place to buy maternity clothes?
Any specific items (clothes/bras/underwear/etc)  you particularly love?
Any sales going on?
Any cute maternity looks on blogs or elsewhere you've seen?
etc...

  • Agreed about Motherhood!
  • I got everything from target and gap last time. Buttttttt I also literally wore the same leggings, the same two shirts, the same sweater Ugg’s (the ability to expand with swollen feet is huge) and a different cardigan every day.
  • Okay, so I hated the quality of the Motherhood and Target stuff. I ended up buying a lot of stuff off Poshmark last time. I had several pairs of designer jeans and they were like $20-$30 a pair. I plan to do the same this time. And I like Gap/Old Navy tops. Better quality than Target stuff, but still affordable. And you can wear a lot of it when you're no longer pregnant.

I didn't have a problem with Motherhood Maternity stuff.  In fact most of my tops from there lasted me through both pregnancies (which were close together!).  I also had some stuff from Target.

My favorite maternity jeans were Gap, hands down.

I gave all my shit away after DD was born 4.5 years ago, so I will be starting from scratch.

Edited for typos.  Spelling is hard.

  • I agree about Motherhood Maternity. I got nursing bra there which was so comfy but it quickly fell apart after a few washes. Annoying.

I got leggings from Blanqi during one of their half off sales and I love those things. Great for pp too. I’d like Old Navy stuff also and have shirts I’ll be wearing again from there. I love Targets nursing tanks (so nice and long). I basically lived in those the first few months pp.

I have yet to find a pair of maternity jeans I like.
  • I've also never found maternity jeans I liked either. Half panels aren't that comfy, but full panels make me itchy and hot. Also the full panel falls down, and often they're baggy in the butt, and I have no shortage of ass, so I'm not sure what it's all about.
  • Exactly what @bleucheeznwine said. I’m all ass and maternity jeans give me saggy diaper butt.
  • Also I already had big feet, 10 before my daughter and 11 now. The last two weeks absolutely nothing but men’s Crocs fit me.
  • I only wear full panel maternity jeans and I'm really picky about how the panel feels and stretches. I like the Jessica Simpson maternity jeans - they fit big though so size down. Tops, I buy a lot from Target, Old Navy and Gap with some of my regular stuff mixed in. Lots of open cardigans, too. I usually end up wearing one of DH's jackets (I commute by train and have to wait for the train outside and walk about 10 minutes to and from work). I wear my regular bras and underwear so I'm no help there.

  • I plan to wear my LLR leggings & some tunics as soon as it’s cool enough. I know many people hate them but with a solid tunic or tee shirt dress (Amazon has great, cheap ones), a denim jacket, and my fav ballet flats (Tieks), I think it looks pretty cute and will last through the fall/ winter.

I’ll grab a pair of Mat jeans somewhere (probably Motherhood since the Plus Size Maternity options are pretty limited - did you know that fat people don’t have babies?!?!).

My maternity style with my last pregnancy was leggings or jeans w/ a tee or tank and a long, open cardigan. I’ll probably go with the same style again because if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

  • I hated the pants I bought from Motherhood Maternity. This time I'm getting some pants I like. Honestly last time, I wore a lot of sweatpants from Victoria Secret. This time I need real work clothes, so I'm going to have to go shopping.
  • I just invest in good pants/jeans because I just keep wearing my normal shirts. I’m super excited to be pregnant in the fall/ winter this time. Cardigans and leggings FTW.
love the Jessica Simpson maternity line. The skinny jeans are my fave!

Any tips for maternity/nursing bras for people who hate underwire? My boobs have pretty much doubled in size now and my bralettes are becoming uncomfortable. Haven’t worn bras in years so I don’t know my bra size, but even though they’re bigger now they’re still on the smaller end of the spectrum. Any STM’s with tiny tatas who have some ideas on what to do/buy?

  • I did maternity Le Tote last time once I was really showing and plan to do it again. My office is very laid back but super trendy so I found Le Tote gave me way more options and I spent less than I would have for all the outfits I got over 5mos, vs buying. I did buy a few basics to layer/have, but I probably got like 3 totes a mo and didn't have to keep anything. I had to get a tote or 2 before I figured out what brands/sizes fit me best- but once I did I usually wore everything in my totes.

  • @grebretso I got some awesome nursing/pumping bras last time on amazon that I was obsessed with. I wish I remembered the brand ... probably gonna be whipping those bad boys out soon to sleep in since my nips are so sensitive
  • @BourbonBiscuits you can search past orders by year, haha. Give up the info!

The Bravado nursing tanks and bras are incredible, @grebretso.  No underwire, TONS of support (even for large  BBs like mine).  They are pricey, but worth every $$$.  I had 3 tanks and 2 bras form my first and they are still in great condition 6 years and 2 babies later.  I will probably get a few more tanks since I wear them everyday when nursing.  I like having the belly coverage of a nursing tank.

Thanks @BourbonBiscuits and @McKBaby! Both of those options look awesome. I’ll wait to but until after my US next week, but my poor boobies will need some relief sooner rather than later.

Edit: autocorrect changed “poor” to “poop”. Oookay.

  • Gap almost always has some type of sale going on. They're currently offering 40% off of everything (even sale items) with the code THANKU. I just used it and bought two pairs of leggings and a wrap dress for under $60 (free shipping, too!).
  • @grebretso - Champion sports bras from Target are my go to while pregnant for the evenings. During the day, I wear Third Love bras. They also work great during nursing despite not being nursing bras when you are wearing regular clothes (i.e. not nursing tanks).

  • I really need to find some comfy underwear that will work with me throughout this pregnancy! Any suggestions?
@madreofdragons I'm with you on rocking the 11's now. :( I just bought danskin memory foam slip ons from walmart for $8! They're comfy, and stretchy, can I can get away with the solid black and dress pants.
Kohls had a bunch of fall maternity clothes on sale a few weeks ago so I stocked up on cotton dresses, blouses and sweaters. Still need to figure out the pants situation.

@lzzfrancisco - I just ordered big old maternity undies on Amazon and I’m thrilled with them. I’ve got some mid section jiggle so I like that they hold everything where it should be.

  • VS hiphuggers work great for me @lzzfrancisco. They sit below my bump and I've worn then through 2 pregnancies.

  • I'm going to need to invest much sooner than I anticipated. My fave work pants, that I have in 5 different colours, are out and the others can only be worn with a trusty hair elastic. I've never worn dresses so often!

Do maternity pants have a way of fitting from beginning to PP?
  • Anyone tried ASOS maternity? In NZ the range of maternity clothes is either lacking or hellishly expensive so was thinking online might be the way to go.
  • etnyahetnyah member
@lokibear89 I’m an avid ASOS shopper and I’ve put a lot of their maternity stuff in my cart! Not buying anything yet, but they seem to have a good selection of stuff.  Sadly all of their cozy looking sweaters are made of acrylic, which is a big nope for me. You being in NZ I doubt you’ll care about warm sweaters though!

  • @grebretso by the time I need to wear maternity clothes it will be warming up quite nicely here. I have been saving stuff on the app like a demon at the moment getting a bit overexcited for when I will need it.
  • I want some maternity overalls but I am super picky, so if anyone sees any, send them my way!

@lokibear89 - I know people who swear by it. I'll probably end up trying some tops from them this time (I mostly wear jeans to work - thank god for the Microsoft effect in Seattle).

Zara is pretty popular too, I think. I have some H&M stuff that I really like as well.

  • @becks_726 in my experience my pregnancy weight gain was similar to my normal weight gain style. For my body I gain weight butt first. So in my maternity shopping, I was buying underwear and pants first and i had to buy a size or two up.
  • Target was hit or miss for me. Pinkblush is ok for dresses, but the leggings I bought from them started pilling right away. Gap/Old Navy were good, but they stopped carrying stuff in store (around here).

my strategy this time around is to get only nursing friendly styles. Half of the stuff I had last time I couldn’t use, so I had to buy more clothes that let me whip my boob out more easily.

My first nursing bra was from Motherhood, and I hated it. It made my boobs look weird. My favorite one I bought from Soma, but when I went back with my sister last fall they no longer had them (maybe online?). She ended getting one from Nordstrom’s that she really liked.
  • Nordstrom is great when you need a supportive nursing bra. They alter normal
bras to make them nursing bras, so you aren’t stuck with a single brand. My favorite nursing friendly/maternity brand is Boob design. They are a little expensive but they have sales quite often and their clothes are great! They really hold up well and are pretty basic styles. I bought a lot from pea and the pod, which I think is Motherhood maternity, and I thought their quality was very lacking. A lot of their clothes felt one pregnancy use, which isn’t acceptable for their prices. I’m going to try for cheaper gap and old navy this time around. Honestly though, I think all I’ll need is like a pair of jeans and 5 pairs of leggings.

  • Getting a little more specific, what are some good places for maternity workout gear? Or do most people just size up since it’s pretty stretchy already?
  • @megpants209 I've had decent luck with Old Navy's. I mostly just size up shirts but like actual maternity workout pants.
  • @megpants209 - Old Navy for pants for sure. I can wear regular shorts for a while, but then size up near the end. Shirts, wear regular ones or size up.

  • @bleucheeznwine and @kayjay44 thanks a ton. Never thought to look there but I’ll check ON out!
  • We've been looking for my maternity clothes everywhere - found a few pieces, but that's it. I think DH got rid of them instead of storing them. I am not happy.
