(EDD 05/02/19 so 9 weeks along.)  Looking at my wardrobe, I've been trying to figure out how much I can get away with altering my clothes instead of trying to find plus size maternity clothes.  Not much available in NZ so would have to buy online from overseas, which can be expensive with shipping/customs charges.  Am thinking it might be possible to insert fabric at the side seams on a few of my tops to expand out the belly area, especially ones that are plain black fabric, and also to sew a wide band of stretchy fabric at the top of some trousers (leaving the fly permanently undone) to convert them.

5w6d. Had my first appointment Monday. We chatted about pregnancy after bariatric surgery and my OB is familiar with it, which made me so happy. The only real “issue” is the glucose testing - I cannot drink the glucose drink because there’s a fear of “dumping” (basically the high level of sugar in my tiny tummy won’t do well and then I’ll toss my cookies). We decided that instead, I can just check my sugars with a glucometer for a week around 18 weeks and then around 28 weeks. She’s cool with me having a 3rd c-section and said because I’ve had two others and I make 10 lb babies, she’s totally okay with it. We talked about testing and said that because I’ll be AMA at delivery, she said Panorama should be covered (I have to call and confirm).

I feel ok. Random nausea. Sore boobs. Bloat for days (god bless sundresses!). Just plugging along until my dating u/s later this month.

  • EDD 2/13/19 so 8 wks.
I'm feeling much better the last three days, nausea is slowly fading(which makes me happy and nervous).
Haven't gained any weight yet, but haven't had the energy or strength to be very active.
Working hard to focus on veggies and fruits when I want to eat.
See the ob next week and want to discuss appropriate amount of weight to gain, or lack of during this pregnancy. Has anyone been told they should not gain weight, or gain only a very minimal amount during pregnancy?

My OB said anywhere from 11-20 lbs is normal for my starting weight. Seems low to most but it’s absolutely manageable. I gained 9 lbs with each of my previous kids and they were close to 10 lbs each.

What is your estimated due date and how far along are you?

EDD is February 22nd which makes me 6w5days.

How are you feeling? What are your symptoms? Any anxiety?

All I am is anxiety. My ultrasound was so far off what I thought that I’ve convinced myself the baby is just not growing like it should be and will not progress. Even though it had a great strong heartbeat. And even though I know I have PCOS and really have no idea how my body works. It’s super fun to be in my head right now.

The nausea is getting worse but it is still very manageable. I feel like I get more tired each day, which I didn’t think was possible.

How are you doing with activity and nutrition?

Psssh. I’m on vacation. I’ve been eating terribly. I also feel too tired to do anything. I also feel like I might be caring a little less about what I eat because of all the crazy going on in my head

@l@lzzfrancisco they told me I should only gain 15lbs.

  • @febmum have you checked out crossroads.co.nz and nz.boohoo.com? They both had decent options that didn’t cost an arm and a leg my last pregnancy. Not everything on boohoo maternity section runs in larger sizes but several items do.
  • @okayestmom12 That is awesome! Goals.
  • @okayestmom12 you only gained 9lbs over your entire pregnancy???? I feel like I can gain 9lbs after thanksgiving dinner.   How did you do it?   I’m a 1st timer so I am a little nervous about the amount of weight I gain.  It’s recommended for me to only gain 15-20
  • I gained 4. Left the hospital 10 lbs lighter than I started. I consistently lost weight until the 9th month. I ate nothing but carbs and cheese. I joked it was from no beer. Was told it happens commonly when you’re heavier to begin with. Hoping it happens this time because I started heavier than last.
  • You all are so encouraging! 15lbs or less sounds doable now!
  • @elliecele17 - it’s totally possible. I did t really change my eating habits but low gain is pretty typical with heavier gals when they’re pregnant. In fact, my SIL and BFF (both plus size ) lost weight! I did t gain any of my 9 lbs until the third tri either time.

  • I only gained about 15 when I was pregnant with my DS. I’m really worried I’m going to gain a lot more this time though. With my first I was so nauseated for 5 months that I barely ate anything and actually lost weight. This time I’m nauseated in the morning but my like 2 pm I want to eat everything. I’m trying to make smart decisions, but I’m not always the best at that. I haven’t gained anything yet and am hoping to stay that way for a while.
  • Well I am very encouraged now!
  • @smm1118 I just had McNuggets. *shrug* I’ll have a salad tomorrow.

I had a salad for dinner but NEEDED carrot cake from a local restaurant so that’s on tap for dessert.

What is considered “plus size” for starting a pregnancy? I think I probably belong here, I’m always  on the high side of “normal sizes” like 16-18/XL when not pregnant usually  and apparently there’s enough of me that I have to get glucose at 12w this time because my BMI is over 30 to start this pregnancy. I’m about 25-30# up from when I started my last pregnancy.

I was talking to a coworker today who is about 13w and also on the heavier side starting out and it kind of sucks that our weight has us getting extra testing, etc, when neither of us have GD history or other health issues. Like, dude, I was depressed when my Dad died when I was 6w PP in ‘16 and I ate my feelings. I get it.. but I really don’t have other risky lifestyle factors.

I gained 65# with DS, 30# with DD, and goal range with this one is 10-20#.
  • I think if you want to be here then that’s enough for me @cmjenkies :) Size wise that’s right where I’m at too. And yuuuup on all the early testing.

    @cmjenkies - I’m an 18. You’re in good company.

I think “plus size” varies. If you go by retail, some start Plus at 12 (GROSS). Most start at Size 14 though so if you want to be here, come play!

The extra testing... I won’t lie, I LOVED proving my OB “wrong” when I passed all testing. Two healthy pregnancies. No GD, no BP issues. Did I mention I was 363 lbs the day I delivered my youngest? Super obese but ya know what, I grew a beautiful, healthy baby.

It does suck that many providers ASSUME that because we are heavy set, we are a walking complication. Not the case!

@Kurrant thanks for the suggestions, they don't quite reach my size and it's hard for me to size down because I'm also very tall :)

  • I didn’t have to do the early testing with my first pregnancy. I will be with a new ob/gyn group this time since I moved between pregnancies so I wonder if I’ll have to do it this time.
  • This is my first time being subjected to early testing! I had my other two children at birth centers and my midwives never even batted an eye at my weight. I'm at a regular OB office now. I have to take the GD test next week. Bleh.

I had to do the GD test early with my second.  My son was on the bigger size (8lbs 15oz ... not crazy), and they said that plus my weight was a reason to take the GD test early.  I was pissed, TBH.  They wanted me to take it before I even had my viability scan, which I refused!  I think I took it around 8-10 weeks.

I had to take the 3-hour because I failed the 1-hr, but I passed.  Also passed the 3-hour at 28 weeks.  I love proving them wrong.

Guess it depends on the practice, like most everything with pregnancy.  Each one is different.  :)

  • I haven't even had my viability scan yet! I still haven't taken the GD test yet. I want to get my ultrasound done first and have a more solid EDD since we have nothing to really go on.
@shellperry This is the first time I've had to do one early. I'm only 10lbs heavier than I was with my other pregnancies. Never had GD, never had to do a 3 hr test. I'm a little peeved at this OB office to be honest.
  • Family history also makes a difference.  My mom has type II diabetes, so that was an additional factor (they claimed) as to why I had to take it early last time.  They didn't mention anything at my last appointment, so I'll be curious to see if they do at my appointment tomorrow.

@littlepeanutnumber3, I would refuse the take the test until you have a scan.

  • @shellperry My BMI is pretty close to yours and I've never had to do any early testing due to weight. I do extra HCG and progesterone and genetic testing due to recurrent miscarriages. I saw my OB yesterday and she actually said it's probably not realistic for me to not gain very much weight, she would still fully expect 15-20 pound weight gain. Furthermore she said she isn't concerned if I gain more than that as long as baby is still growing healthy. Took a lot of pressure off my shoulders!
