Questions of the Week - 6.25

Re: Questions of the Week - 6.25

  • @binxybaby I use Ivory Snow for our baby laundry soap. As for the dryer I don't use a dryer sheet for the baby's stuff. My dryer has an anti-static function so I'll use that instead.
You can also buy dryer balls that do the same thing. It's basically to take the static out of the clothes.

  • @binxybaby I got a ton of dreft at my shower, so I've used that for my daughter, and we're almost out.  I used our regular dryer sheets and have had no issues.  I also didn't change how we did other laundry including blankets from the couch, our bed, etc.  I just started buying all free and clear for all of our laundry to use when I run out of dreft.  My daughter had dry and sensitive skin, but no issues with dryer sheets.

  • I started with Tide Free & Clear but then switched back to regular Tide and it never seemed to cause issues for my son. That's what I wash his diapers in, too. For drying I just use wool balls because H's work stuff can't be dried with dryer sheets and it's too much of a pain to take his stuff out of the regular laundry after it's washed.

  • The only reason I can't give up dryer sheets entirely so far is that the Tide doesn't have a scent so I need something to make my husband's clothes smell good. I'm making it sound like he's a real stinkpot, but in the summers he works outside all day in the heat and comes in covered in chemicals and sawdust.

I'm starting to switch our laundry routine a bit to make it more baby-friendly. So far, we've switched our general detergent to Tide Free & Clear pods. I figure we'll use that for most everything and then a baby-specific detergent for baby items. That way, baby will have their clothes, blankets, etc washed in baby detergent, but they still will come into contact with fairly safe detergent when around our clothes, bedding, etc. My DH just gets too stinky and dirty to use a super mild detergent on his clothing. But, I figure we should switch our dryer sheets too. Maybe a safer dryer sheet for us and then nothing for baby's stuff? Any suggestions on baby detergent? What about dryer sheets? I'm a FTM so any suggestions or thoughts are welcome!
With my 1st I bought one thing of Dreft and then switched to a fragrance free detergent. Then I missed the smell so I started using my tide pods again. For ds2 I didn’t make any changes. I probably won’t for ds3 either unless I notice a sensitivity. The only item I really care about for skin sensitivities is the baby soap. We used Mustela when the boys were little because ds1 has a reaction to Johnson and Johnson (and some others).  Now we use Johnson and Johnson, but I’ll buy the Mustela again for the baby. I love the smell - it’s just expensive.
  • I was just thinking earlier today that we should have a thread about brand names that we liked or thought were over priced or whatever (for shampoo, detergent, and whatever else)
  • @binxybaby Honestly I would just wash baby stuff separate. Then you don't need to worry about scent free for you/H or dryer sheets for him either.
I actually still wash DS's separate. The way I see it is I would have to do 2 loads with that much clothes anyway. PLUS I have a problem with washing our clothes that tend to be more dirty / have chemicals on them or whatever. Even though they are being washed I can throw DS's in on their own on a light/quick wash with no concerns.
  • @Activebaby LO has already been gifted some Mustela products - good to know it’s a good product. The shampoo foam I registered for just seemed so sensible for those soft little baby heads.

  • @kristah2 brings up a good point. I don’t sort any of my son’s clothes and wash them all together as “brights”. So I do add the few bright things we have, but who has time to sort baby onesies into darks and lights?

  • @PensiveCrayon I’m a sort-a-holic...when I don’t have to rely on laundromats. Right now I’m washing like a bachelor - full integration. When I start washing things for kiddo I plan on full-integration baby loads, in addition to my usual darks / lights / bleach whites. FX!

  • We (that is, DH, who does all the laundry in our house) doesn't really sort much, unless our laundry pile gets big enough to warrant it. He does all the kids stuff separately. Lord knows we have enough trouble keeping undies and socks in the right drawers - sometimes I find DD's undies in my underwear drawer. She's 6, y'all. We're not close to the same size.

It's just easier for us to keep it all separate. I think we'll probably just start with the tide pods we have now for baby's clothes, though we should probably get some tide powder for the CDs, so if baby is sensitive, we can always switch.
    Pass the sheet cake.

  • I can just imagine DH pulling a baby sock out of his jeans pocket if we washed the big guy's clothes with the little guy's. And now I'm tearing up. Damn you, hormones!

We love it. I was surprised at ds1’s rashes to the “baby” items, but he grew out of it. Ds2 never had any. I guess we never know!
  • Has anyone had very low blood pressure during pregnancy? Just had an endocrinologist appointment and mine was 97/58. She told me to eat something with a lot of sodium and have a Gatorade and it's nothing to worry about unless I feel dizzy but I feel SO tired! Just got the snacks and Gatorade so I'm hoping I'll feel less tired after eating/drinking. Anyone else experienced this? If so, how quickly did you feel better? All I want to do is nap (but am heading to work unfortunately!)
  • Ya’ll... I’m not sure if this is the right thread for this, but I guess it’s kind of a question...

Ok so last night in the middle of the night I tripped over a dang toy and fell... hard. I fell on my side and so I wasn’t able to soften the fall with my hands or anything like that. My whole belly shook and was sore. I called my doctor’s emergency number (at midnight, oops) and she said it’s probably fine and to stay home and rest. She said I only needed to go into the ER if I had any cramping or bleeding. So no cramping or bleeding (thank god) but I also haven’t felt any movement since then. I know not feeling movement consistently now is normal (I’m 17 weeks) but man would it be reassuring right now!

Anyone else taken a fall like this?? Am I worrying for nothing? I never fell with my son, so I guess it’s kinda new to me. I’m tempted to call and make an appointment with my doctor to have them check on the baby since my next appointment isn’t until the end of this month. What would you do?

  • @maureenmce my bp is typically low, around what yours was, and I don’t have any issues. Is it possible you have low iron?
  • @maureenmce My bp was 91/54 when I had my physical for life insurance the other day.  The nurse didn't seem to think it was worrisome and I've read that bp drops during pregnancy around this time.  I have been getting dizzy when I stand up sometimes and am also tired, but otherwise feel ok.

    Pregnancy Ticker
  • @Jens_Hoes Oh good idea - I'm not sure what my iron levels are. I just assumed it was blood pressure related because I feel exhausted just as of this morning when I got the low reading. (Luckily I know the fatigue is not my thyroid, because that was checked at the endocrinologist appt.) I guess if eating/drinking doesn't make me feel better by tomorrow I'll have my OB check my iron levels next week! I do have iron in my prenatal, but I know that doesn't always do the trick. Thanks!

@borgie05 Granted, I was much earlier than you are now, but around 8 weeks I fell really hard on my concrete front steps.  I managed to avoid direct contact on my abdomen but I was sore all over for days and was pretty shaken up.  Lo and behold, I had my 8 week ultrasound a few days later and everything was perfectly fine.

From what I understand, they still have quite a bit of cushioning at this point, and if the fall wasn't enough to significantly hurt you, then the baby is probably fine, especially if you didn't fall on your stomach.

  • Thanks @hkom! Everything I read was during the first trimester the baby is still protected behind the pelvic bone, but second and third can have a bit more of a gray area. It’s more than likely baby is fine and I keep trying to remind myself of that. I think I’m just still shaken up because I’m still sore from the fall. I’m sure I’ll feel better when this baby decides to move enough for me to feel it. Now to go back and read everyone else’s questions because I feel like a jerk for freaking out on mine and not acknowledging others yet!

  • @maureenmce If it helps, I don’t have low blood pressure and I’m tired all the time too. I think that’s normal. Growing a tiny human is exhausting!

@borgie05 I mean I certainly wouldn't blame you if you wanted to go in for a quick check!  But I hope you feel some flutters later today so you can get some reassurance that everything is ok!  I am super nervous about falling at work lately, since I'm getting further along and my balance is starting to get wonky.

@maureenmce I was coming here to say the same thing - I read that it is normal for BP to drop in the second trimester and that BP tends to even out or get high after 24 weeks.  I eat some pretzels and drink some gatorade when I'm feeling a little lightheaded too.  Glad you are feeling better!

@borgie05 Call during normal business hours and see if you can come in for just a fetal check to check baby's heart beat.  The peace of mind is worth it.  I was in a minor car accident yesterday and they were able to do this for me in the office. I was also in another accident when pregnant with my son and, because it was after hours and I was 7 months along, had to get checked out in the hospital and it took forever.  I much preferred the OB.

Here's my question:  Can one of you just do my registry for me?  PRETTY PLEASE?? I am still SO SO overwhelmed by it.

Edited to add: It's a joke... kind of.

    RE: Strollers

You really have to think about your lifestyle, where you live, and what you will use it for.  I was set on getting an Uppababy Vista with my son because my friends loved theirs.  But when I went to try it at BuyBuyBaby I realized that it didn't work for my life.  I knew I would be taking my stroller in and out of my car a lot, but it was heavy and cumbersome to fold.  I also knew that I would taking it off sidewalks and onto rougher terrain (grass, sand, gravel), but the wheels weren't great for that.  My friends who love theirs live in cities, so they don't fold their strollers, take them in cars, or use it anywhere but paved roads.

I ended up getting the City Mini GT and absolutely loved it.  I can fold it with one hand, it easily fits in my car and in my house stored away, it has all terrain wheels without being a huge bulky jogging stroller (like the BOB), and it was a third of the price of the Uppababy!  And we were able to use an adapter to make our Britax infant car seat click right in.

  • @lexiedog I can be bossy and tell you everything to get! Or you could read Lucie’s List, which is my favorite baby registry de-baffler website. But then again, I’d already created a fake baby registry before we even started trying so. I love product comparison.

  • @PensiveCrayon Be the boss of me! LOL! This is so out of character for me! I am the bossy one but feel so overwhelmed.

I have been looking at Lucie's list. I think I just need to take it one thing at a time and then have some of my mom friends look at it, I guess. We are going to take a trip to Buy Buy Baby to just try out some strollers and look at big things.

  • @lexiedog register for anything and everything you think you may need. Even the big things. You never know what kind of items your friends/family will get for you (my hubby’s grandparents bought us our stroller and I am so thankful because it wasn’t cheap). But not only that, but places like buybuy baby will discount the items on your registry for you after your shower.

  • @lexidawg I second Lucie's list!  It was recommended to me by bumpies here and it was super helpful. I also found that my registry was more fun and less stressful after I had decided on a stroller, carseat, and crib.  Now I feel so FREE!
  • @lexidawg You will probably feel much better after you actually tried them out yourself. Try not to sweat it too much. It is supposed to be fun! But, yes, I would love to do yours for you. I am obsessed with baby product shopping and don’t get to do much this time.

@borgie05 I agree with what others have said. I would call and try to get it checked, just for your own peace of mind. That being said, baby is most likely perfectly fine. I had a student hit me very hard in the stomach when I was 16 weeks with DS and he was completely fine.

@maureenmce  I also have low blood pressure.  The only concern the nurse voiced was that if I were to end up with pre-e later on, my “high” threshold  would be a lot lower than your average woman because my normal is so low. Does that make sense? I’m struggling with wording.

@binxybaby  if you are looking to try something different, try washing your husband’s clothes first with baking soda and then with vinegar. MH also comes home sweaty and his clothes smell ripe, but that really seems to help.
  • Are we allowed to eat chicken salad? I cannot remember if I ate it last time or not and it sounds really good. I’m going to be really upset if I go ahead and make it for dinner and then cannot eat it.
  • @katy0990 I am not worried about the big stuff. I am set on which crib I want and pretty sure I know which stroller and car seat I want.. it's all the other smaller stuff....
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • @katy0990 eat the chicken salad!
  • @lexidawg As for strollers: Do you plan on having more kids? Do you run a lot? Do you live in a city where it will be a primary mode of transportation?

For the car seat Once you are at the store you can pick the ones that you like the look of and are in the price range you want and take them to your vehicle to make sure they fit. That will really narrow it down for you.
  • hkomhkom member
@katy0990 I think that "rule" is for premade deli salads.  If you make it yourself I wouldn't even think twice about it.

    BabyFruit Ticker

  • @katy0990 Totally makes sense! And I think chicken salad is fine- enjoy!
  • @lexidawg Is there anything in particular you’re having trouble with? It sounds like you have the big stuff that needs a lot of research down. That was the hard part for me. The one thing I really liked about registering in a big box store is that I could just go down the aisles and pick the smaller stuff I wanted on the fly. Are you just registering on amazon? If so, I could see how that could be challenging trying to shop for that stuff online. One thing I found really helpful was BRU had a list of everything you “needed” to register for—obviously you’d pick and choose from that list. I wonder if it’s still online somewhere.

@katy0990 I say go for it especially if you’re the one making it. That way you know everything is fresh and hasn’t been sitting out. That would be my main concern.

  • @katy0990 Pretty sure I want an Uppa Vista because we have a frozen embryo that could become baby #2.  We aren't runners so don't need a jogger and we live in NYC.  We use our car a lot though.  If I settle on the Vista, I want the Mesa car seat that is full compatible without adapters.

I also know I want the Babyletto Hudson Crib.

The big stuff is easy.. it's like what monitor, bathtub, bouncer, activity mat, exersaucer, bottles, swaddles, etc, etc, etc, etc. LOL
