Re: Questions of the Week - 6.25

  • Anyone have suggestions or recommendations regarding strollers, infant carriers or travel systems?

  • @MermaidMo14 I think a lot of that depends on you. Will you need a jogging stroller, or will a regular stroller suffice? Are you interested in baby wearing?

We bought a jogging stroller off of FB Marketplace when I found out I was pregnant, because it was a cheap step up from the one we had before. We've found that jogging strollers are usable in the non-jogging situations where we'd want them, but that more often than not we wear the baby because it's just less bulky. And since we will like to occasionally jog with the little one, we at least need this and won't want two separate strollers.

As far as baby wearing, I prefer a soft wrap and my husband prefers a structured carrier. He won't be able to use his until baby is a bit bigger, but since I'll be on maternity leave for the first 12 weeks, I'll probably be wearing baby most of the time anyway. Again, I just cruised FB marketplace, craigslist, and next door until I found someone selling a barely-used Moby for $10, and pounced. We still have the Boba carrier that DH loved so much, so we're basically set.

The last thing I suppose is the travel system. We need to rebuy a carseat because ours have expired. If we were buying a regular stroller, I would definitely take that into consideration while choosing the carseat, to make sure everything worked together. As it is, we'll just be buying the seat we like best that will hopefully fit best in our cars.

  • We have a chico keyfit and love it.  We used to have a Graco travel system but the keyfit fits better in our car and is easier to get in nice and tight so it doesn't wobble. I felt like I was constantly having to retighten the LATCH belt on the graco base.  I dont know what the chico stroller is like as I didn't get one since I found I didn't really ever use a stroller with the infant seat on it and I have 3 other strollers already...

  • I have a Bumbleride Indie and heart it so so much. We installed an adaptor so it would fit our bucket seat when the kid was a wee one. It is a three-wheeled stroller that converts to a jogger via an easy locking mechanism on the front wheel. I’m actually sad I’ll have to be giving it up for a double stroller with this next kid.

I was actually sad when we sold our double jogger. I think mostly it was just sad to realize that I wasn't going to be able to push my ~90lbs of kids while running anymore :D

@MermaidMo14  I love our baby jogger city select! The big selling point for us was that it can be used as a single or double and you can add a riding board.  It folds up easily, has rubber wheels, has a huge basket underneath, and fits most car seats. As far as infant car seats, we have the Britax B Safe. It is a bit heavier because it has metal in the sides, but I really like that safety feature.

If you have a Buy Buy Baby nearby, I highly recommend going and trying out different strollers and car seats to see what fits your car and is more comfortable for you
  • @MermaidMo14
I just bought my stroller but the first website that I looked at was Lucie's List. It explained all the differences between the strollers and travel systems. I made a list of the "must-have" features for me and what features sounded great, but I could probably live without. Then, when I had a better idea of how much I was willing to spend, it only came down to 2-3 travel systems. I learned that it's very dependent on your lifestyle. Also, you can check out some youtube reviews - they are probably paid for by the company and will therefore be favourable, but they really show off the features.

  • Anyone have recommendations for sit & stands? I'll likely babywearing a lot and push DD in our Britax stroller but on the occasion I want both in a stroller I'm thinking a sit & stand will would well. I'm also considering an inline double.
  • I can tell my shorts are not going to last me through the summer, but I don't want to buy full panel maternity ones.  I'm considering the side panel ones or just using a band.  Does anyone have a maternity band they like?  I'm not sure what to get.

I’m totally not answering your question correctly, but I broke out the full panel maternity shorts (and pants). It’s so nice! My clothes arent hurting me anymore. I don’t have side panel or a band, or else I’d attempt to answer your question
  • @kadeephd
I just bought a side panel one from target and theyre SUPER comfortable; I've never used a maternity band:

  • I'm a full panel fan, but I also rock the Beband belly band.

  • @binxybaby @Activebaby The full panel ones just seem like they would be so hot to me?  I guess it's not that different than wearing a band though.  I also do not have a real bump yet so I'm not sure they would stay up correctly.  I visited my SIL the other week and she is about 30 weeks along and still wearing the side panel ones.  I was thinking that might be a good option.

@Jens_Hoes Those look great, thanks!  I think I may need to return some stuff at Target so I might go see if I can try them on while I'm there.

  • @Jens_Hoes I have those shorts and they are the goat. So comfy!!!
  • @kadeephd I haven't had an issue with overheating so far (and I overheat super easily) but IIdon't think I've done a whole heck of a lot outdoors. It hasn't been a terrible summer here in Indiana yet IMO. Lots of rain. I hear it'll be pretty bad this weekend though.

  • So the last couple weeks or so, sometimes when I'm on my back at night I wake up to my left arm all numb and tingly. Not all the time, just here and there. Anyone else have this issue? It goes away when I adjust, and I'll probably mention it at my next appointment. I know there's a reason you're not supposed to sleep flat on your back, was this it? There's so much inside that it presses against a vein/artery or nerve or something? I can't remember lol. And I don't do it on purpose, I just roll onto my back while I'm sleeping.

  • @CecilB93 I wake up with tingly arms also! I know that it's because I'm pinching something in my sleep, and I can blame my air mattress. I'll ask my new OB next week, but I don't think I'll be able to apply anything he suggests - not until I have my real mattress + extra pillows + proper air conditioning.

  • @CecilB93 That happened to me with my last pregnancy. My arms and left leg would get tingly. I was told it had to do with the nerves and was related to the pregnancy induced carpel tunnel that I developed.
  • @CecilB93 The reason you aren’t supposed to lay on your back does have something to do with a blood vessel that can be effected, but it’s not until later on that it’s an issue. I remember my doctor telling me that my body would tell me when it was time to move and that I’d be too uncomfortable to lay on my back when the time came. That’s why I slept sitting up at the end of my last pregnancy. I get tingly arms too but only if I have them up near my chest. If I keep my arms down they don’t wake up tingly.

  • @CecilB93 like others have said once we all get further along the weight of our bellies on a vein can cause dizziness for us and then decreased blood flow to the placenta. My OB said our bodies would let us know something was up before there was any adverse affect on the baby. So if you are on your back and start to feel weird then that would be a sign to roll on your side.
Not sure about the tingly arms
  • Thanks everyone. I thought not laying on your back had something to do with a blood vessel, and I thought it wasn't until much later! Just weird that I never have this tingly issue when I'm not pregnant. I don't remember anything like this with DS this early on at least, so it's weird to me. This morning I woke again with my ring and pinky fingers on both hands all tingly, so I'm thinking I'll mention it to my OB at my next appointment and make sure it's nothing to worry about too much.

  • @cecilb93 I've noticed that I've been losing feeling in my arms or almost losing feeling (which feels tingly to me) when sleeping more often, but I think it's because I'm having trouble getting comfortable and sleeping in weird positions.

  • @CecilB93 it’s probably pregnancy induced carpal tunnel. I have had it all 3 of my pregnancies. I get prenatal massages and he helps me out a lot but I do still get tingly and sometimes stiff.
  • ebk20ebk20 member
I also had pregnancy induced carpal tunnel and it was terrible. I don't think it started until the 3rd trimester but it was probably the most uncomfortable part of my pregnancy. It made working (typing stuff) nearly impossible.
  • Question for pet owners:  Our 10lb doggie sleeps with us. She always has. She is the sweetest thing and great with kids.  My family keeps asking when are we going to train her to sleep somewhere else and it's really not something we are considering.  We aren't planning on cosleeping.  Is it something any of you who have pets sleep with you considering or have had your pets sleep elsewhere? The thought breaks my heart.

  • @lexidawg our dog sleeps with us (about 14 lbs) and has since we got him! I don't plan on changing that and I don't really see the need to for baby - we aren't cospleeping either. IMO, if you wanna keep puppy in bed, then keep her in bed!

  • @lexidawg our dog (who started at 10lbs when DD was born, is now about 20 :( ) has slept with us this whole time. DD is 6 yo. It’s never been an issue, and isn’t something that we could pull off anyway - pupper would never be okay sleeping anywhere else and that’s just fine with us.

  • @lexidawg we have a 30 lb beagle/hound mix who has slept in our bed since day one.  He literally sleeps where he is touching me/with his head on me somewhere.  We roomshared with my daughter for the first 3 months and it was perfectly fine.  We are firmly against bedsharing as there are documented cases of suffocation from it, so we will never (and I am very confident in my ability to say never here) bedshare while our children are babies/toddlers.  We have no plans to change where our dog sleeps for #2.

@lexidawg Our dog sleeps in our room, but she knows she's not allowed on the bed until after we wake up in the morning (she usually only comes up if we call her up).  She's bigger than your dog, though, at about 35-40 lbs.  H and I both like our space when we sleep, and the dog in the bed just adds one more body and makes it too crowded.  She has her own bed in the corner right next to ours and she's fine - she even gets a heating pad in the winter to keep her toasty.  For some reason, in the summer she likes to sleep under our bed.  I guess it's maybe cooler under there but I have no idea.

But it's your bed and your dog so it's up to you.  I'm not sure why your family is even thinking about that.  If it doesn't bother you, then just let the dog continue to sleep in the bed.

  • @lexidawg we have a 10 lb dog. She sleeps in our bed. Quite routinely the 2 & 4 year old are in our bed. They start in their rooms, but usually come by in the middle of the night. My dog will growl at them when they are bothering her (laying on her, sitting on her, etc.) and then she moves. It works for us.
  • Does anyone have experience with placenta encapsulation and/or cord blood banking? Looking for pros and cons of both.

  • Our 15 lb dog sleeps and out bed and will continue to do so.  As others have said, the baby will not be in the bed anyway unless you are bed sharing, so what difference does it make?  People ask the weirdest questions.

    Pregnancy Ticker
  • @lexidawg Our (two) 60lb dogs sleep with us - usually one moves down to the floor after an initial snuggle, but the other one gets closer and closer to our faces as the night progresses. When kiddo moves out of the ute we're planning a bedside bassinet for nighttime, but allow bedsharing for afternoon family naps.

Oh, I just realized that I actually out-weigh my combined doggos :open_mouth: *mixed feelings*

  • @runrinserepeat I have done neither, but I believe that I heard that placenta encapsulation can be potentially bad because it is the placenta's job to keep toxins away from the baby, so there could be toxins in the placenta.
For cord blood banking, I believe you cannot do that if you also want to do delayed cord clamping, which I guess is what "they" (not sure who they is) recommend.  Also, I'm not sure your family hx but you risk paying the fees to keep the cord blood and not needing to use it ever.

But I am also speaking from memory and could be wrong.
  • Thank you for your feedback everyone!!  I am glad to know we aren't alone in thinking that our arrangement doesn't have to change.
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • @Jens_Hoes we've not done delayed cord clamping with either child, and they both somehow survived this long. Part of the reason I ask is because my mom has a blood cancer, so she has gone through the whole search for stem cell donors and even though that didn't end up being a viable treatment option for her because of how advanced the cancer was, it's definitely something I've considered. Of course, I don't think the cancer has any real genetic component... I think my mom just has plain bad luck and that I'm not any more predisposed to this than anyone else. But still, I can't help but wonder if it would set my mind at ease a little, y'know?

And as far as the placenta thing, that's always what I thought, but some people legit swear by it and I'm just trying to understand why. Kind of considering just taking some giant iron pills to see if that helps. It would sure be cheaper.

  • @runrinserepeat We looked into cord blood banking last time, but decided not to because of cost. I was very interested in donating the cardboard, but my hospital does not do donation.
  • @katy0990 yes, that's a good point. I may simply look into donating it (my OB mentioned that was an option here). I mean, idk if I want to pay thousands of dollars on the off chance someone in the family may need it, but if I could donate it for free to someone who really does need it now, I think I'd like that.

  • @runrinserepeat @katy0990 I think Emily Oster did not bank her cord blood because it is high cost and there is a very low likelihood you'll use it.  She said donating it isn't a bad idea since it could help someone else.  I'll donate mine if that is an option at my hospital.
