  • For S+TMs:

  • Loading the player...
  • For S+TMs:
    • Any lifestyle factors that could influence your picks: I struggle with supply, so I want a really effective, top notch pump.
    • Favorite [breast pump/accessory]: Spectra S2! I own three of them. They are amazing...so much better than the Medela's I tried to use (even the one in the hospital).
    • Link/picture: https://www.amazon.com/Spectra-Baby-USA-Hospital-Electric/dp/B00BLBLR1I/ref=sr_1_4_s_it?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1522247376&sr=1-4&keywords=spectra+s2
    • Cost (either actual dollar amount, or just $, $$, $$$, etc.): Amazon has them at $137, but the one I purchased I got for $100. They do go on sale.
    • What you like about it: Super efficient, maximizes the amount of milk I get. Quiet, easy to use.
    • What you don't like about it, if anything: I don't love the shape. It's kind of awkward to put it in a bag. It does work well in a larger Thirty One tote.
    • Is there a [breast pump/accessory] you don't have but are considering? Why?: Considering the non-pump milk collection cups. I would like to try a freemie, but I heard they are awful.
    • Is there a [breast pump/accessory] you've tried that you absolutely hate? Why?: Medela. Super popular, super weak.
    • Additional thoughts on [breast pumps/accessories]?: Maymom makes great accessories for the Spectra. You can find them on Amazon.

    • Favorite [breast pump/accessory]: I had the Medela Freestyle. I used the medela easy expression hands free bustier instead of their hands free kit though.
    • Any lifestyle factors that could influence your picks: If you don't want to be confined to being near an outlet while you pump, this could be the pump for you. I am a SAHM, but it was still nice to be able to pump in the car, or in any room, without being plugged in.
    • Link/picture: https://www.amazon.com/Medela-67060-Freestyle-Breast-Pump/dp/B0013O9RX8/ref=sr_1_3_s_it?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1522256759&sr=1-3&keywords=medela+freestyle
    • Cost (either actual dollar amount, or just $, $$, $$$, etc.): My insurance at the time covered most of the cost. I payed $50 out of pocket.
    • What you like about it: This is the only one I've ever tried, so I can't really compare, but I really liked it. It's super small and lightweight, so it's easy to take anywhere. I'd pump in the car, bring it on trips, pump while doing stuff around the house (just dont lean forward, the milk will spill out). I see there are some complains on amazon about strength and battery life, but I didnt have issues with either one.
    • What you don't like about it, if anything: It's loud, but I think that might be an issue for all of them.
    • Is there a [breast pump/accessory] you don't have but are considering? Why?:
    • Is there a [breast pump/accessory] you've tried that you absolutely hate? Why?:
    • Additional thoughts on [breast pumps/accessories]?: Not sure if this counts but I am thinking of getting an additional freezer for the garage. Our freezer is already so full already and there won't be any room for milk there, plus freezer meals.

    • Any lifestyle factors that could influence your picks: I wanted something with a battery so I didn’t have to be near an outlet to pump
    • Favorite [breast pump/accessory]: the spectra s1- battery powered or you can plug it in, I used it three-four times a day for a year and never noticed the battery losing charge or any decrease in output.
    • Link/picture:
    • Cost (either actual dollar amount, or just $, $$, $$$, etc.): free through my insurance
    • What you like about it: it was never painful to use and I always was able to pump plenty with it. I brought it to the hospital and had the lactation consultant make sure the flanges were the right size and show me how to use it. The flanges were too big so she suggested the right size and I ordered it from amazon through Maymom accessories- the bonus of this was the new flanges were actually compatible with all medela bottles and accessories, so it was easy to just run to target when I needed anything else for it
    • What you don't like about it, if anything:
    • Is there a [breast pump/accessory] you don't have but are considering? Why?:
    • Is there a [breast pump/accessory] you've tried that you absolutely hate? Why?:
    • Additional thoughts on [breast pumps/accessories]?: I agree on an extra freezer! We pretty much had no room for food in our normal freezer, just milk. I donated a ton to make room and then eventually we got a deep freeze.
  • For S+TMs:

    • Any lifestyle factors that could influence your picks: y 1st had a tongue tie so I pumped after every feeding for 5 months.
    • Favorite [breast pump/accessory]:  hospital grade modela rented from babies r us.
    • Link/picture:
    • Cost (either actual dollar amount, or just $, $$, $$$, etc.): $$
    • What you like about it:  I used my insurance pump (Ameda) for a while and I wasn’t getting a lot of milk and I was wearing out the motor. It increased when I switched to hospital grade.  Most people do not need a hospital grade pump, but if you are having supply issues or serious breastfeeding issues, rent one because it does make a difference.
    • What you don't like about it, if anything: not portable.  You should have a hand or battery pump if you rely on pumping so you can relieve engorgment when you’re out.
    • Is there a [breast pump/accessory] you don't have but are considering? Why?:  nursing/pumping bra so I could pump other side while feeding or he haaka silicone.
    • Is there a [breast pump/accessory] you've tried that you absolutely hate? Why?:
    • Additional thoughts on [breast pumps/accessories]?:  get a hands free pumping bra.  It’s so uncomfortable to hold the cups on there for long enough.  Get a double pump because you get more milk with a double let down.  If you pump very frequently get extra parts so you don’t have to wash every time.  They wear out anyway so you might not even be spending much more.  Make sure your flanges fit you properly.
  • @offtoneverland I am living for how organized this is!

    For S+TMs:

    • Any lifestyle factors that could influence your picks: I hated being stuck to an outlet w/ my first and now w/ my 2nd, I really need something portable and hands-free. And efficient. If I end up having to EP, I don't know how I'll manage pumping every 2 hours for 20 minutes at a time.
    • Favorite [breast pump/accessory]: I used the Medela Pump In Style Advanced. It was good enough but towards the end I could tell the motor was weaker. It wasn't made for EPing for as long as I did (10 months). I didn't even spring for the hands-free bra; I cut holes in a strapless Walmart bra  :DI will definitely be treating myself this time around!!
    • Cost (either actual dollar amount, or just $, $$, $$$, etc.): Free through my insurance. My fancy bra cost $5.
    • What you like about it: I liked that it was a double pump so I could pump in half the time of a single pump (does anyone still buy those?). I also liked that I could pump directly into bottles that LO could drink from. I didn't have to have a whole cabinet of different kinds of bottles.
    • What you don't like about it, if anything: I didn't like that it had to be plugged into an outlet to work. If I hadn't EPed I may not have minded, but having to sit in one spot for 20 minutes 6 times a day was mind-numbing and inconvenient.
    • Is there a [breast pump/accessory] you don't have but are considering? Why?: A hands-free bra for sho and a portable pump. I'm also going to buy a milk saver in the event I'm able to breastfeed. Let the research begin!
  • @MouseMama817 I can't take credit! I stole it from some other BMBs. I guess I'm the odd one out in that I kind of enjoyed pumping. Not the act itself, but it gave me an excuse to sit for 20 minutes and watch TV or read a book while MH took care of the baby. I exclusively pumped so I spent a ton of time pumping! I read a lot of books.
    • Favorite [breast pump/accessory]: I can't say I had a favorite breast pump because I only used one. I got the Hygeia Enjoye through my insurance for free. I really liked it. I exclusively pumped, so I spent a ton of time with that thing, and it lasted really well. It was still going strong at 12 months when I stopped pumping. It seems to be one of the lesser known brands, but I really liked it and will probably get one again if it's still offered through my insurance.
    • Link/picture: I think they changed the model a bit since it's been 4 years since I've used it, but here is the link to the Enjoye.
    • Cost (either actual dollar amount, or just $, $$, $$$, etc.): The website says $279, but I got it free with my insurance.
    • What you like about it: It was easy to use and it's supposedly a hospital-grade pump, which is nice. I carried it with me to work every day and I thought it was fairly portable.
    • What you don't like about it, if anything: The motor was pretty loud, but it didn't bother me much.
    • Additional thoughts on [breast pumps/accessories]?: Get a hands free pumping bra! You can also kind of stick the flanges in place by un-clipping your nursing bra, putting the flanges on, then re-clipping your nursing bra. But I liked the hands free one because it was more secure. Here is a link to the one I had. It's a little on the expensive side, but it was so worth it.
Last note: I ordered my pump through the yummy mummy online store. I just entered my insurance information and they did all the work. I highly recommend it; it was so easy and stress free, and I never had to call my insurance!

  • I got the Medala PISA because I did zero research with my first. I got whatever was popular and free. To be honest, it got the job done but meh. I’ll be looking into the spectra 2 with this next baby. It’s a closed system pump!

I basically went through trial by fire with pumping and learned how to pump properly. I did it for a whole year. Wooo.

I recently won a free pump at a breastfeeding event I went to! It’s an Ardo. It looks amazing I want to try it out so badly. It’s quiet and small and won’t make you feel like a total dairy cow (but you will feel like one).

Also, Duck bill valves FTW! And we used regular ol babies r us milk bags (RIP).

I totally recommend the manual Medala Harmony though. It’s pretty good.

I think I just learned something....Is this why the tubes on my Medela PISA got moldy?  :o

ETA: I also clearly didn't do any research with my first pump. Whatever was free and that I'd heard of. I've never heard of closed vs open system pumps.
  • edited March 2018
@MouseMama817 yes! The medela PISA is an open system where the milk flows through the tubing whereas the sepctra is a closed system so the milk does NOT flow through the tubing. Obviously as a FTM I haven't used either but that fact alone is having me leaning more towards the sepctra. According to some reviews/comparison articles the septra has better suction controls (more adjustable) also. (And is supposedly quieter and has a backlit screen)

  • @lurvleybunchococonuts I cannot tell you how many videos I have of DD where you can hear me pumping in the background  :D. The Spectra is looking good!
  • The Spectra pumps I see on Amazon seem to be hospital grade. My insurance said they would be happy to cover a new pump for me (it’s been three years) but not hospital grade.

Did anyone one have a spectra that is not hospital grade? Or what models specifically did you insurance cover?

I like my Freestyle but if I can get a new one for free I’m gonna!

  • edited March 2018
I'll have to look into what my insurance will cover. Even if they won't cover it the Sepctra is hella less expensive... Like (again per reviews) people have stated they often are on sale for like ~$100, of course free is better lol :joy:

My tubings never got moldy BUT I know that if you get them wet then the milk can get into the diaphragm and cause mold that way too.

  • The Hygeia is a closed system pump too. Just putting that out there for anyone who's interested. It really is a great pump but it's not very popular for some reason. I have a weird sort of fondness for it, probably because I was attached to it by the boob for 12 months.  :D

I had the Spectra S2. Insurance covered it 100%. I think it's just "hospital grade" in that it's a closed system and technically multiple people can use it bc the milk isn't really going anywhere but the bottle. It definitely isn't like those bigger ones you actually get in the hospital or that you can rent.
I did like it. I do wish I had the option for the S1 so I could move around and pump. Also ordering replacement parts wasn't that great bc the Spectra site was always out of stock.
  • @Eveninshock Does the Spectra come w/ its own bottles or can I attach what I already have?
  • It came with 2 I think. And I ordered a second set. You can also buy adapters I think.
  • For anyone getting a pump through insurance, when are you ordering it? With my first, an electric pump wasn’t covered under insurance yet, so I was lucky and got one as a baby shower gift from some family members. My insurance company said I can order it at any time, I just need to ask for the script from my doctor.

  • My insurance covered the Spectra S2 but not the S1 -- they are basically the same minus the battery.  No prescription required since I had to order it from one of four provider sites that UHC already contracts with.

I liked the Spectra a lot but baby brain is real and I definitely forgot parts at home a few times, which generally meant I was SOL since I couldn't just run over to the Target next door.  I bought extras on Amazon a few times and while they were all compatible with the pump, they weren't always as compatible with each other, so pick a replacement brand and stick to it (Maymom is good and cheaper than the official replacements).  FWIW, I wanted the Hygeia but it wasn't one of my covered choices.

Did any of you ladies use a pumping bag with the Spectra?  If so, which one?  The only annoyance about the Spectra to me was the round shape which isn't conducive to packing it up well/easily on the go.  I just used my really large diaper bag (Skip Hop Baby Grand Central) but something more compact and convenient would be nice.

  • There was another Target-carried brand that did fit the spectra pumps, I just can't remember what it was off the top of my head. The adapter sets were definitely a G-d-send when I had overwhelming days where I just couldn't get everything clean fast enough.

@runningyogimama and @purelex thank you so much for bumping this thread.  @runningyogimama I have the exact same question.  @purelex I also have the option for the Spectra S2 but not the Spectra S1.  I can get the Spectra S2 for free, but I would have to pay $135 to upgrade to the Spectra S1.  My question is whether $135 for the added battery option is worth it.  What does everything think?

Thank you very much in advance!

  • @serabjorn I didn't use the Spectra, so maybe someone else will answer your question, but I personally wouldn't pay that much just for the built-in battery. If you plan to travel a lot or pump on the go, it might be worth it for you, but otherwise, I would skip it. I exclusively pumped with a pump that had to plug into the wall, and it was never an issue. I think one time the power went out and I used a manual pump that I had on hand in case of emergencies.

@serabjorn, I agree with @offtoneverland that I probably wouldn't pay that just for the battery unless you really need/want the convenience.  I will say that I am considering it this time around because I have had to travel a lot more for work recently and the room I pump in at work only has one socket that isn't close to the chair.  I remember spilling milk on more than one occasion due to the tight quarters/awkward layout before and not having to deal with a cord in my way is one less thing to worry about    Same for at home with a toddler running around... if I ever have to pump around her, cordless would be useful.

Side note... I was traveling last week and noticed my local airport has pumping "kiosks" in the terminals now!  It looked kinda of like a photo booth at first and it took me a minute to figure out what it was, haha.

  • The aeroflow staff people are pretty nice. So this lady had emailed me like 4 times with reminders that my insurance approved me for a pump. I emailed her back stating I wasn't going to order until closer to November and she has set up reminders to contact me again the beginning of October. It's stupid and a small thing but noce to be one less thing for me to keep track of doing.

  • Thanks everyone for the maymom advise! Not having easy access to spare parts had me leaning Medela but I will be going Spectra s2. Weight, noise level, and the closed system won me over! I really like the Avent bottles though so I wish they were compatible.
  • I wonder if I get a new free pump this time? babies are only going to be 20 months apart and I feel like there was some amount of time limit the insurance allowed for getting it free. I will have to call them I think but did anyone have that issue?  I would pump the first bottle in the morning before work so a pump I could leave home and at the office would be a GODSEND this time around. no carrying anything but bottles and cooler...
  • Resurrecting this post for selfish reasons, hopefully others don't mind! I called my insurance yesterday and can pick one of the following:

    - Ameda Finesse
    - Hygeia Enjoye
    - Spectra S2
    - Medela Pump In Style

From what I gather from earlier in the post, the Medela Pump in Style has some not so great reviews so I'm probably out on that one. My friend is lending me hers to keep with me at work, so I'll get to compare that with whatever I end up with at home. I've seen some good feedback on the S2 and a few on the Hygeia Enjoye.

@purelex I know you mentioned you wanted the Hygeia but it wasn't covered by your insurance. Curious to know if there's any specific reason why you wanted that over the Spectra?
  • Question for those that don't like the medela pump in style - why didn't you like it? I rented a hospital grade medela pump for 6ish months before I used the pump in style and I never had a problem with it (granted I only used it once a day after the first morning feed - I used a hospital grade pump when I pumped at work in the hospital 1-2 nights a week). Most of my milk stash came from that morning pump and I had over 2500oz of milk in the deep freeze. I'm asking because my old insurance didn't cover a pump (they were grandfathered in), but I need to look and see if the new insurance does. If not, I was planning on having somewhere look and test my pump in style and use it again.

  • @ginny_203 I love love loved my Hygeia Enjoye. I have to caveat this by adding that it's the only pump I used with DD, and the only pump I've used period. So I have no experience with other pumps and don't know how it would compare. But I loved it and it held up to me pumping exclusively for 12 months. It's a closed system, meaning the milk doesn't leak into the tubes or into the breast pump, so they can safely be reused by other people. The company also has a recycling program, so you can send in your old pump when you're done with it.
I've heard of some people who've used other pumps and had the milk leak into the tubes, causing mold to grow in them. I never had to clean the tubes (well, once when the duckbill valves got old/worn out, milk started leaking into the tubes, but as soon as I got new valves it stopped leaking).
The pump also came with a manual pump which was great for when I was on the go. It seemed like a unique manual pump system, so it was much more comfortable (I assume) than the manual pumps that you have to squeeze with your whole hand.
I'll be getting another Hygeia this time around for sure!

@ginny_203 I used the Medela PIS to EP for 10 months with DD and it did the job, but I will say that the motor is definitely not made to run that hard (I pumped up to 6 times a day). By the end of my pumping journey the motor was noticeably slower and not as effective. I'm sure there's some warranty I didn't have the energy to look up that would've replaced it for free. Hopefully you wont have to EP and in that case I totally recommend it :)

Has anyone tried the portable Spectra 9Plus? I have to purchase mine out of pocket so I'm looking at all of the models. I've heard wonderful things about the Spectra 2Plus (the little pink round model), that it drains really fast,  but I'm nervous that if I have to EP again I wont be able to be attached to an outlet with a toddler and a baby. If anyone has tried it, what did you think? Did it drain quickly?

  • @offtoneverland thanks for the feedback!
  • @ginny_203 everyone I know has used the pump in style but I am going Spectra for the closed system, it's much lighter and quieter (I will be pumping at work). I was torn between the two at first myself.
  • I placed my order yesterday morning for a Spectra S2.  FTM and hoping it works well for me! :)

  • I asked this somewhere else but I thought I would try here too - what pumping bra did Spectra users find worked for them?

  • @lifesabeach85 lansinoh simple wishes worked fine. eventually traded out out flanges with maymom brand and those worked with that bra too.
