Thanks! And 'musty' is the perfect word for it!

  • @sammierose464 I saved everything from my twin boys (5 years old now). This one is a girl & our last, so I’ve been going through all the totes to get ready for an upcoming sale. Most of the bigger sizes are still in great condition, even after being stored in a tote in the basement for a few years.  There were a few things that were stained, but most stuff looked good & we didn’t have any issues with musty or moldy smells.

I can't seem to get this right.  With DS being the first born, we just had way too much of everything between the shower, gifts from friends, neighbors, etc., me not being able to help myself.  He hardly wore the same thing twice out of the NB and 3 month clothes.

With DD, I was determined not to do that again, so I bought only X amount of this or that, but she was born in early May, and most of the stuff was springy/summer, and then the first 3 weeks of her life it was raining and freezing (New England, yay!) so I still ended up out buying some outfits that would keep her a little warmer.

For this baby, I am aiming for -

    Newborn -

1 pack short-sleeved plain white onesies

1 pack long-sleeved plain white onesies

4 sleepers (I didn't like sleepers IN the swaddles, just a onesie was enough

    2 2-packs of pants

2 3-packs of colored or fun onesies

    2-3 NB "outfits"

And then the same list in 3 month clothes, except with more outfits, and probably some other random cute stuff that I find along my travels.

  • I’m not buy any newborn girl stuff. We have some NB boy stuff and I will use that if I need to. DS was 9lb 2oz so we squeezed him in for the first two weeks.

Im planning to bring a 0-3 outfit to the hospital, but honestly I never changed DS when we went home.
  • Potential dumb question here...is it really necessary to wash all the clothes first? I'd rather buy too much, and return the extras, buy obviously can't do that if I wash them. I guess I could wash some of them, and keep the tags on half of them and see if I need them. I'm just predicting a big baby based on genetics, but you never know, baby girl could be in newborn for a while!
  • @jemmerjams not a dumb question at all! With my son I washed a newborns and 0-3 months so there would be some clothing for him but didn’t wash it all just in case. With my daughter, I bought a lot on consignment so I went ahead and washed the newborn and 0-3 months since there was no way to return them anyway. She ended up in newborns for about 3 months.
  • @jemmerjams I only washed/removed tags from one size ahead. That way I could wait and see what we had, what we needed, what was the right season, etc and hopefully return stuff that didn’t work. By about a year I stopped prewashing all together.

@chopchop25 I have two stories about not washing clothes first.  Once I bought a pair of jeans and about halfway through the day stuck my hand in the back pocket and found a receipt for a pizza restaurant.  Apparently I didn't learn my lesson bc a couple of years latter I bought a pair of wool dress pants from Banana Republic, put them on in the morning and found a condom in the back pocket, not in a package.  I literally threw it and yelled then washed my hands for 15 mins with antibacterial soap.  I went back with a tissue to inspect it, it didn't look "used" but still............. who does that!?
  • lest12lest12 member

I also wash everything but think it's a good idea to save receipts and wait until you're ready to wear stuff.  I wish I did that with my kids but I was super impatient.

This thread inspired me to go look for some clothes for the baby (I have nada, and won't be having a shower) and everywhere still has summer stuff.  I guess I will wait.

  • @kfrob that is DISGUSTING. I hope you called the company you bought it from to let them know. The returns process should have a higher quality inspection procedure.
  • @lest12 yes my family have bought me some things in 6/9 since everything in stores is summer. Poor kid won't have any winter things!

I did the same, but was just given a couple outfits in newborn and they were long sleeve/long pants, so there must be some warmer things out in stores now.  I mean, back to school starts in a couple of weeks (isn’t it usually beginning of July now?) so the cooler weather clothes should be out soon.

I did see a few new long sleeve things in target today!  Not much yet but its coming!

  • So I went through my registry this morning...I had quite a few long sleeve/pant options in the 6-9 months size range...Presumably, since I live in the south, probably not the best option? Should I swap those out for short sleeves? I mean, I wouldn't wear long sleeves over the summer...
  • Stores will start putting winter stuff out in a month or two.

@jemmerjams Z was born in October and was in 9m by January. By the time it warmed up, he was in 12m. I’d keep a few on the registry

    E will be 18 on July 24th

  • To the hospital bring a couple of newborn outfits and 0-3 to make sure. Bring something warm for them because they have a hard time regulating body temperature. Put them in something memorable.. I just had a grey onezie and blue pants and I wish I put him in something cute. This time around since my son is 8 months I have all the clothes from him and we've bought a couple outfits here and there for my new boy. I'm kinda lucky they are so close so I dont have to worry about clothes.

@jemmerjams I’d swap most of it and keep a few long sleeve options, especially since we only have about 3 weeks of cold weather in Texas :D DS was born 10/29 and didn’t wear 9 month clothes until March or April.

  • @jemmerjams - Also, don’t forget that you can layer.

This - after going through all the baby clothes from our boys, I realized we had short sleeve onesies in every size, but during winter months, we also had long sleeves and pants, summer months was rompers and shorts.

  • Thanks all!! I've seen some cute baby jackets/sweaters and stuff, I can always get those if we get another cold front this winter.

My mom and I just got a bunch of clothes trying to stay 6mnths up since I'm assuming I'll get a lot of 0-3 maybe 3-6. I love the second hand baby store about 2 hours away and since we were already next to it at BRU we had to go!
  • @purplegoldfish2 & @BabyRobbinsAdventure

Thanks for the tip! I was wondering about that.
  • @purplegoldfish2 @BabyRobbinsAdventure I wondered that too! I assumed it was the lower size, so good to know!!
  • Yup don't get things for too far in advance because you have no idea how fast they'll grow! DS was in 12 mo SO QUICKLY! In fact, we pretty much skipped 9 mo clothing. But then he was in 12mo for a good 6 months. So crazy. (And honestly DD is like that too, she can still fit in some 12 mo dresses that she was wearing lt summer).

@purplegoldfish2 YES!  I was under the impression that at 6 months DD would fit into size 6 month.  Then when I found out 6 months was really 3-6 I was like well jeeze that would have been good to know ahead of time...

And those months sizes don’t necessarily line up with babies who come in all shapes and sizes. So just because you buy a cute swimsuit in 9 months thinking it’ll fit perfect in summer, they may have already outgrown it or won’t fit into until fall. We had many a wrong season clothes early on because DS was such a peanut. Now he’s huge and jumping into a size ahead.
This. My son was wear 6months clothes by 3 months, 12 months clothes by 6 months and 18 months clothes by 10 months.

My niece is so skinny and long she was in odd sizes for a while! Anything like pjs had to be 12-18 to fit her length. Individual pants too, and shirts were like 9-12 and she was almost 15 months until she was finally fully in 12-18 clothes. She's 2 now and in 18-24 I think? She was always smaller.
On the other hand my friends little one is going to be 2 in August and easily in 4t clothing! He's just a really big boy. Not overweight just big.

DD was spot on size-wise until she turned 2. She stayed in 2T from 2 until a couple of months ago (she turned 4 in March) and moved up to 3T in most things, but 2T pants still fit her better in the waist (they’re just too short). She’s tiny - she’s barely on the growth charts and looks like she’s the same age as DS (they get mistaken for twins all the time). DS is on the small side of average. He was mostly a size or two bigger than his age as an infant, then since he turned 2 (in October) he’s been consistent. His feet grow like crazy though...we’re on our third shoe size in 2 months.

  • SS is tall and skinny. He's 6 and wears 6s and 7s only for the length. I have to make sure they're adjustable pants so I can tighten them.
  • I have a couple of weird kids that pretty much wore their age - nb for a month, 0-3 months until about 3.5 months, 3-6 months until 6 months, etc.  They actually still do - 5 years old and wearing mostly size 5. I know MOST kids don’t actually do that though and I’m hoping the cute summer dress I bought in 9 months fits sometime during the summer.

  • Then you have extra weird babies like DS. He was a skinny rail (like 3rd percentile) until like 9 months. Then went through a huge growth spurt and his weight caught up to his height by 15 months (now 80th percentile for both). So he went from wearing sizes below his age to above his age. So unpredictable.
  • So I was thinking about this today as I was organizing clothes. There are two types of parents. Parents who like snaps and parents who like zippers on sleepers. DH and I preferred zippers for dressing a wiggly baby. We felt that snaps took too long. But we loved the once piece out fits that only had snaps on the bottom.

At first I hated zippers because I was worried I would zip the umbilical cord in it, but quickly discovered how hard snaps were to put back together in the dark with wiggly babies.  I snapped them wrong so many times. Hoping for lots of the pjs that zip from the bottom this time - I don’t think they existed when my boys were little.

edit - zoo, zip, same thing

  • @purplegoldfish2 that was how we felt, those snaps were such a pain in the dark! I actually got rid of all of my snapping pjs when I was going through clothes.
