Breastfeeding Megathread

Re: Breastfeeding Megathread

  • @mccurleya, my LC had told me DD1 was squirming and trying to pull off the breast (occasionally) because my milk letdown was too powerful for her (we were in office for a supervised feed to assess latch). She was trying to slow the flow. The LC suggested a more laid back, literally, feeding position to slow the flow instead of sitting more upright because when I sit upright, gravity takes over and speeds up my letdown.
  • @mccurleya my babe squirms too and coughs...too much milk too fast. I try to get a burp in as soon as he starts to squirm and then I put him back. Squirming stops if he gets a burp in.
  • Loading the player...
  • Thank you both! He definitely eats way too much too quickly. I will try laying back some.
  • Mine does all the above too, fast let down but when we switch to boob #2 she cries and never eats, but she doesn’t act hungry later so guess she’s telling me “Mom I don’t need the second side so stop making me try!”
  • Fast letdown here too. I’ve been trying to lean back too. It only helps us a little bit. She has so many burps and so much gas it’s unbelievable and I’m sure my fast letdown and imperfect latch has a lot to do with it.
  • Laying back went well last night. He didn't choke, pull off a bunch, or get extra squirmy. It is hard for him to relatch in that position, but that's not a big issue I can't help with. Thank y'all for the advice! I will keep it going and hope it helps ease the gas too!

How often/how many feeds is your baby feeding?  Charlie is starting to fall into a loose “routine” of sorts based on our family’s daily schedule and eats about 6-7 times a day at 8 weeks.  My DS #1 at 8 weeks was still eating just about every 2 hours with the occasional 3 hour.  My daughter has on formula starting at 7 weeks due to no supply.  He’s had great weight gain and growth with no slowing down as he’s at the top of the charts in height and weight.    I feed on demand, but he doesn’t seem to “demand” like DS1 did.  I still wake him overnight and during the day for some feedings.  Wondering if I’m doing too much, too little, or just right for him.
  • @mmom3 Nate eats about every 3-4 hours and he's 4 weeks, about 11 pounds. I feed on demand but it seems to be about that long between. He never goes longer than 4 hours. I'd say as long as Charlie is having plenty of pee/poo diapers and is at a healthy weight then he's fine!
  • @mmom3, I agree with @mccurleya about Charlie being fine if he’s at a good weight and having plenty of dirty diapers. Luna has a pretty predictable schedule forming and she’s not quite 6 weeks yet. Usually wakes to feed once between 4-5am again about 8-9 then around noon stays awake cluster feeding until about 2pm then wakes back up about 5:30pm and cluster feeds again until about 10-11pm. Rinse and repeat. She’s averaging eating between 20-24 ounces per day total (still mostly pumping because she’ll only sporadically latch). I’d say so long as the routine goes well with the family’s schedule, I’d go with it.
  • Does anyone else's LO sometimes go a full day without pooping? It seems every couple of weeks Camden skips a day he doesn't seem like it bothers him at all and he still has plenty of pee diapers is this normal?
  • knutty3knutty3 member
@heatherandmatt26.  I think it's normal.  Our Dr. said to call if more than 48 hours pass without poop.  Our LOs skip a day every onve on awhile at 8 weeks old.
  • My little guy eats like a champ. I'm feeding him on demand but now I'm wondering if its too much. He was born 6pds 13 ounces and st 6 weeks was 10pds 6 ounces. We have our 2 month visit at 10 weeks. I have a feeling he will be up a couple of pounds by then! Isn't this a drastic change? I read they should double weight by month 5 and triple by 12 months. I know every baby is different...
  • Lurking from April.
@heatherandmatt26 between 4-6 weeks poop cycles can change and if ebf babies can have a cycle of every 3-5 days. My first child's normal was every 5 days.  Once we started solids, it became more frequent (every day or 2). My pediarician told me to come in if it was more than a week. But definitely speak to your pediatrician if concerned.
  • Hi ladies

Last night my husband and I took the baby into the shower with us. We were safe about it - our shower is large and we got the baby tub in there. He absolutely loved the water running on him  <3 . Well, he went to sleep at 11pm normally I put him down between 9-9:30. At 5am he was still sleeping....that's 6 hours. I would have continued sleeping too but I had to go pump because I'm not used to a long stretch like that and I was in so much pain.

So if your babies are sleeping more than 3-4 hours...you find you need to wake up and pump anyhow? I have a feeling he is going to wake up starving! Sheesh

Those that are back at work, how’s pumping going?  Is baby still nursing fine when y’all are together?  I’m so worried my supply will dip when I go back next week; with my first I only could pump for 2 more months after starting work and my freezer stash let her have breastmilk for 7 months.
  • Pumping is going fine. I get 5 ounces each the first session and 3-4 the second. He nurses just as great as usual when I get home and at night.
  • Pumping is fine.  I have am starting to get a little less, but still about 20 to 22 ounces.  By  a year i will be lucky to bring home 12 ounces.  Granted, I am usually pregnant again by a year, but not this time.  She nurses way better than taking a bottle, so no issues there.
  • @slr1229, My pumping and nursing has been difficult for me since returning to work. She doesn’t sleep well at daycare because they don’t swaddle and there’s always so much going on so when she gets home she’s too exhausted to want to feed and pretty much just stays asleep when I put her in the crib from her car seat. Then during her MOTN feed, she’s so hungry that she’s not patient enough to latch. So combining lack of having DD at breast on a regular basis plus I got my cycle last week plus not always having a chance to pump every 2.5 hours like I used to at home and my supply’s taken a nosedive. I left a message for my LC last week but I think she’s on vacation because she hasn’t yet responded.

    Please, no judgement——
With DD1, I gave up after about 2 months because that employer wasn’t BF or pumping friendly. I’m already past that point with this baby but will probably ultimately only keep it up for another month or so- either I’ll stop producing or work will get too busy for me to be able to take regular breaks.
  • @maelily15 absolutely no judgement!  You have done an amazing job.  Working, pumping, breastfeeding, and feeding in general takes a lot, regardless of your methods.  I say great job for all you have done so far.

@maelily15.  I hear you!  I'm exclusively pumping (and supplementing with formula) and it's been really tough.  I keep telling myself, one more month and am excited to hit 3 months. I head back to work next week and don't anticipate things to get any easier.  Anything we can do is great!!

We've been breastfeeding/ pumping and supplementing with formula. He was gaining weight so well that I got the okay to try to wean him back to the breast only but he would literally eat ever hour and then scream for more food so obviously I'm not making enough for him.  I started pumping during the day and 1-2 times at night and mixing 50/50 formula/breastmilk. He will sometimes still latch at night when he is sleepier, but if he is hungry he just gets mad

That ontop of his reflux and gas issues we've changed his formula 3 times and finally seems to be doing well on Similac total comfort. But omg his farts and poop smell so bad lol.

I'm worried about going to my next two clinical sites because they dont have a designated pumping room like the children's hospital I was just at.  One girl told me she had to pump in a supply closet.  I may just have to get the car adapter and pump in the car

@knuttyplus2 is right. Whatever we can give them is awesome. I've wanted to quit so many times, I'm pretty proud to have given him breast milk (not even fully) for 10 weeks.

I commend you ladies going back to work for even trying to pump. I am a SAHM and am having a hard time keeping up with it and keeping a schedule.

Bacl to work tomorrow, well see how the supply goes.  Of course I have so many back to back meetings on my first day back!
  • Good luck!

Work is for the birds.  Anyone know how you can increase supply in one breast without hurting the good boob?  I only get 1-2 oz in righty when I pump...need that to increase.
  • @slr1229.  Totally agree. I'm pumping right now at work and I'm terrified someone will walk in on me despite my door being locked.  Can people hear my machine in the hallway??
  • @slr1229.  And the part that just got deleted when I posted ... could you power pump just one side?
  • @slr1229 I had to EP for my first son.  The only thing that helped was to pump just that side while massaging.  It's basically like hand expressing while pumping.  It usually gave me twice as much as when I just relied on the pump to do all of the work.   I watched YouTube videos for direction ( there are seriously YouTube videos for everything)
  • Thanks for the tips, so you don’t pump the other side at all??
  • @slr1229.  Pump both or breastfeed as usual, but complete extra pumping sessions on the one troubled breast.  Although I guess it wouldn't hurt to do both?

I also always offer the troubled side first while I am trying to increase supply.  I feel that the baby can trigger let downs and stimulate so much better than the pump.  Then I will pump the trouble side while I am nursing the other.
  • What @knuttyplus2 said. Pump as usual and then give individual attention to the underperformer.
  • I’m pumping juuust enough at work to support her bottles for the next day but the afternoon times are dwindling down.  Any suggestions?  I’m making a smoothie every night but it’s only helping my morning pump, by the end of the day it’s all the same amount in the end and not “extra”
  • Up calorie and water intake.  Add a pump session.  Keep stimulating.

Also try power pumping in the evenings.
  • Massimo keeps eating and looking away...eating and looking away...over and over again. I know there is a stage where they get distracted so it must be this but it's a bit tiring !! He is 16 weeks tomorrow.
