UO: I don't think everyone needs to go to college. I don't think 4+ years of University is the right thing for everyone. I do think everyone should pursue higher education/training, but I think everyone should play to their strengths/interests and not just rack up debt at University cause it's "what you do." Go to trade school! Join the military! Get an associates degree at a community college and then study on your own and work hard in your field! There is no one size fits all, so don't waste your time and money on a path that isn't right for you. (Obviously if you want to be a doctor or lawyer or something and are actually willing to put the time and work in, then yes, you should go to 4+ years of University. I'm talking like don't go to school to major in Sanskrit cause you can't think of what you actually want to do and then be all surprised and upset when you and your bachelor's degree and your massive debt are flipping burgers at McDonald's cause you got straight C's in your core classes and can kinda speak a dead language a little bit.)
@stothi completely agree!!! I have 2 diplomas from trade schools/business colleges. Each was only a year long program. I spent almost 10 years in the workforce afterwards doing the work I went to school for, before pursuing an Associate's. I know so many girls I graduated high school with that went to a four university and either never graduated or are doing something they didn't go to school for.
I'm not a fan of garage sales or thrift store shopping. I like to do a ton of research and find something that's right for me and buy it (hopefully on sale). Maybe it's because when I buy something I get high quality and expect to use it for 10+ years.
@EErin86 Oh man, I am such a thrifter. Some of my best pieces of clothing have been thrifted!!!
I have a lot of friends that love finding cool things and a couple friends that are dazzled by low prices and buy junk. Haha I'm actually going to garage sales with a friend this weekend. I have my eye on a bike trailer and there were several listings for cloth diapers
@stothi I strongly strongly agree! And I, like @southernlady07, work in higher ed - for a major university! I just finished paying off my student loans this year But screw that, I only learned anything about anything once I got out in the real world. I fully believe in trade schools and associates degrees. There are some cool things happening in California with trying to rebrand these types of educations and trying to get the industries that need skilled workers to help fund the education.
@stothi as someone who was pretty miched forced to go to a university and didn't want to because I didn't want to waste money when I lacked any and all career aspirations...I agree. I am great at school got awesome garde's, but changed my major constantly and ran out of money and couldn't get real loans so i had to drop out after 3 years. If I hadn't met my husband there, I'd say it was entirely a bust.
My UO: I feel like makeup and skincare products sold to women are a racket. Like, we sell you super thick stays on through anything makeup...so that you need a really strong cleanser to get it off and to handle your poor skin after it gets coated in that. Then, because you're having to wash and scrub so much to get it off-road get dry skin, so then we sell you a moisturizer.
I'm not judging you if you like wearing makeup-you do you. But, i only wear it like 3 days a year and super light too. I generally wash my face once a day, or every other in winter, with super mild soap and no scrubbing, and never have to moisturize. The dyas I wear makeup I have to scrub it a ton even though it's only light powder. Then I get zits, and have to wash more and then it gets dry and...I feel like it's an intentional cycle by the companies.
I'm weird.

@stothi Definitely agree, and this is going to be what we encourage our kiddos to do. In fact we will probably discourage them from going straight from high school into a bachelor's program at a major university. Due to struggling with depression, anxiety and some events that led to PTSD, it took me about 10 years to finish my bachelor's. And when I finished, I was still only able to get the same jobs I was working before I had my degree. (I knew I wouldn't be able to work in my field without at least a master's but chose to stick with Psychology/Anthropology just to get through.) And I ended up with I think around $42,000 in debt and that's with my parents covering the first 4 years!
My UO is that, I do not mind attention towards my bump from strangers or family members or whoever. You can totally say I look ready to pop and I won't be offended. I think most people are just showing interest in an exciting stage of life and/or just trying to make conversation. Sometimes people say things without thinking of every possible way someone might get offended by it - something people are experts in nowadays - and I just feel like it's a waste of energy to get bent out of shape over it. I find if you just give people the benefit of the doubt, life is much easier for everyone. I frankly enjoy the special attention while I'm pregnant, there are plenty of not so pleasant parts of this journey so I'll welcome the fawning. Now obviously there are comments that are just inappropriate or rude and I definitely get irked by randos trying to tell me what I should or shouldn't be doing as a pregnant woman or parent. I appreciate people sharing science based information that might be helpful in keeping myself and my baby safe and healthy - but try to shame me for drinking a soft drink or for what I choose to feed/not feed my child or something like that and you will see a different side of me!
@pourmeamocktail I love makeup for dress up time but have not, do not and will not wear it daily. I do think most skin care products are a racket. I but some really basic stuff like one face wash and one moisturizer but don't use either daily. I break out in the same spots at the same time if the month regardless of how many products I do or do not use, so I don't use much of anything.
@Car0liiine in general I don't mind comments about my bump either. I get pretty big, pretty quickly and I have a mirror so I'm well aware that baby boy is sticking out there, so yeah, tell me I popped or whatever. Me no care. But do NOT comment on what I am or am not eating, my weight gain elsewhere on my body and do not, NOT, not ever, be a random stranger and think you can touch me. I don't love people commenting on my waddle though. I feel a bit self conscious about it and I waddle because I'm in pain so it's not a good subject to joke about. But hells yeah you can carry my stuff for me or give me your chair or get me a drink and a snack! Pamper me all you want! I'm a toddler mom, ain't nobody giving me special treatment in my day to day.
@Car0liiine I don’t mind the attention to my bump either, I just mind unsolicited advice. For example, I see one lawyer pretty regularly and my first pregnancy it never ever failed that if she saw me with a coffee cup she’d comment “that’s decaf right??” She is an insanely sweet person but it got on my nerves. This pregnancy, same thing! Last week I didn’t even have a coffee cup and she walked into the court room, and said loudly “you’re not drinking caffeine right??” I finally said ——- I don’t even have a beverage cup! And btw, yes I drink some caffeine! She looked scandalized. She looked at another attorney who just smiled and said, things changed from when we were preggers. But seriously every single time I see her! Which is at least weekly. She’s lucky she’s so sweet otherwise.
Also agree about college. Mike Rowe from dirty jobs has a huge following of FB and I’m general on the topic.
Everyone can pry my skincare from my cold, dead hands lol. Retin-A (not while preg) and vitamin C serum absolutely transformed my skin!
No arguments for doing what you like and it working, I just feel like a lot of companies make the products so that using one makes you need another, in a cycle.

With hair products this has been proven true: styling products and conditioners contain silicones and other hard-to-remove ingredients that require a shampoo harsh enough to remove them, which dries out your hair so you need more conditioners and styling products!
Ever since I stopped using any products with silicones or other water-insoluble ingredients that build up I was able to almost quit using shampoo (or just use something gentle on occasion) and my hair drastically improved. This was about 15 years ago!
I also don't use shampoo. This is not a technique that would work for everyone and it horrifies my friends when they find out, but seriously, I'm super clean and my hair smells good. I stopped using shampoo regularly about 12 years ago. I have very dry skin and hair. My hair is also super coarse, curly, and use to be a frizzy mess. I scrub my hair and scalp with water every other day. I soak my hair in a natural curly hair conditioner for 5 - 10 minutes. I rinse really well and then put a little more contitioner on the tips of my hair and get out of the shower. I use the tiniest amount of product and then don't touch my hair at all while it air dries. It works! My hair is still wild, but it is so much less frizzy, looks good, and is very healthy. I will shampoo on occasion - if I notice that I feel oily or get any product build-up, but that is usually once every 4-5 months.
I have an oily scalp hair, but don't use shampoo, because moisturizing or volume adding shampoo makes it twice as bad and I finally found a shampoo that breaks the grease up, but that dried it out too much, and it would overreact and make more oil...
So I scrub with water every shower, and once a week use some baking soda in water to clean the excess oil out of my scalp, and then condition only the ends.

I'm so jealous of those who don't use shampoo! I can't break myself of this, I do use products without silicone and/or parabens, but my hair is so fine that I can't go more than like 2 days without washing.
@nlc8424 I was my hair every 2-3 days and using a dry shampoo helped a lot to wash less! A co-worker gave me her diy recipe... 2 tbs corn starch 1 tsp baking soda Cocoa powder or cinnamon for color
I lloovvveee good face/skin products. But they have to be what your skin needs or you’re doing yourself a disservice. I’ll be completely honest- I’ve spent $150 on a good face oil before and have used that in place of anything else. Then, I found The Ordinary Company in Canada, and they have pure oils that you can purchase, along with tons of other product, that I mix myself. It’s like $8 for a bottle that would be $150+ from emminence or skin ceuticals. Definitely recommend checking them out.
I want so badly to have a glorious skin and hair care routine. But my self care has gone so far down the tubes since having DS, and working night shifts 100% alone has not helped that at all. Although, I’ve been slowly building myself up so that I’m not a walking pile of garbage when baby arrives.
I have super frizzy, curly hair that looks great if I straighten it. The only time I wash with shampoo is after days of it being straight and there is dry shampoo build up. If I leave it curly, I will just use conditioner and very little product and put it in a bun. The only skin care I use is sunscreen. It seems to work as a great moisturizer for my dry skin.
I did go no-poo for a while there... I forget what the routine was, but it involved baking soda and essential oils... I guess it just wasn't totally working for my fine hair, and I think actually it was when we moved to an area with very hard water, I had to give it up. I have to say tho, I am loving my less-oily pregnancy hair! I never used to be able to go two or three days and not feel totally gross... I am getting at least one more day between washes these days! I have been using the renpure line for sulfate, paraben, etc. free and it's worked out great for me!
@Lcardinal04 at my appointment on Thursday my OB actually suggested I drink a small amount of caffeine to help with some of my symptoms... so there’s that.
I ate sushi in my boss’s office today (he has 2 pregnant daughters) and said “you can’t eat that.” Yes, I can and I will. I know he means well but last week I chewed him out for telling me how pregnant I looked EVERY time I walked in his office.
I hate when random strangers say “you’re having a boy, huh?” I have gotten that comment at least 5 times in the past 2 weeks. I am carrying exactly the same as I did with DD and got that comment then too, plus what if I was team green???
@southernlady07 I have used and liked the following from amazon:
Amara Organics Vitamin C Serum for Face 20% with Hyaluronic Acid & Vitamin E, 1 fl. oz. $17
Claire-ity 25% Vitamin C Serum with Hyaluronic Acid and Vitamin E, Best Organic Anti-Aging Moisturizer Serum for Face, Neck & Décolleté(1 fl. oz) - $16
Vitamin C 1 oz Serum with Organic Hyaluronic Acid - Lighten Sun Spots, Anti Aging, Anti Wrinkle - Light and Oxygen Stable MAP Vitamin C - ASTERWOOD NATURALS - Classic Formula Bottle - $11
I'm using the ordinary Vitamin C Suspension 23% + HA Spheres 2% ($5.80) right now but it's a little too intense for my pregnancy skin, and the texture is gritty. I'm interested in trying Ascorbyl Glucoside Solution 12% ($12.90) next, which uses a stable vit C derivative and maintains high potency but more appropriate for sensitive skin.
