How did your SO (or you) propose?

He took me to Catalina Island (off the coast of Los Angeles) on New Year's Day. We borrowed a friend's golf cart and drove around the east side of the island looking for a good spot to watch the sunset (everyone laughed at him when he asked for recommendations). He proposed on a turnout looking over Avalon. I knew it was coming since I knew he had gotten his great grandmother's wedding ring from his mom, but it was still special. We had been dating for 5 years at that point.

We were on our way to go camping with my family for the 4th of July. He wanted to stop at a park about halfway there to stretch our legs and go for a mini hike. Overlooking a river on top of a big ravine he got down on one knee and said some cheesy stuff. We had only been together for about a year and a half so I wasn’t really expecting it. We had gone to a jewelers very early in our relationship (I think around 6 months) and just for fun picked out a ring. I didn’t think he kept the information on the ring or that it would even be there when we did want to get engaged. So I was surprised when he did it and he had that ring we had picked out together. It was perfect.

At home after a date night. Literally as we were getting into bed. I think he had tried a few times in the night but the weather wasn't cooperating and he says he was nervous. I had only been pressuring him for 8 years so he had no reason to be nervous lmao.

On New Years' Eve, we went for a walk out the point (as we say here). We sat together on a giant rock where traditionally he contemplates huge life decisions. He had a very short speech that ended with "I am really terrible at this. Will you marry me?" and presented me with a pink lantern ring.

At our house warming party after we'd just moved in to our house. We'd lived together before in an apartment for about 8 months. His sister was expecting at the time and rightfully so was exhausted and wanted to leave early so he had to quickly round everyone up in the kitchen and I was just like what is everyone doing??? Then he started talking and it hit me. It was cute and I loved every minute of it.

Nothing to extravagant here. He took me out to a nice steak dinner, got down on his knee mid coversation and there you go. Restaurant gave us free champagne. This was fitting for us though, we’re not extravagant people and would rather be unnoticed. I knew it was coming too because I was trying to help him with his phone and saw he had called my dad, which could really only mean one thing.

It was the night before our anniversary week, and SO told me on Sunday that he reserved the right to ask me to dress up three times this week as a part of our "anniversary week" celebrations that he was doing. Tuesday night he told me to dress up Wednesday evening.

I was confused because my sister had said she was going to come over Wednesday to do laundry and eat dinner after work, and I had told her to clear it with SO because I wasn't sure what his plans were. She did, so I figured he and I were just going somewhere after dinner.

My family was eating dinner, and I got a text from SO that said he would be there at 6:30 and to be ready. As I was waiting, my sister was sitting with me, and then she pulled out a note from her purse. She said "huh. What's this? I think it's for you." And handed it to me. I opened it up and it said "meet me at Tower Hill Botanical Garden." I looked at her and she said "let's go." I was so confused. I said "but...isn't SO coming here?" And she said "no. SO told me to do what the note said."

We got in the car and started to drive. I had a thought that maybe he was going to propose, but dismissed it. It was the middle of the week. It was the first of 3 dress up days. It couldn't be.

We got to the garden, and tried o find our way to the spot SO had told Carrie to get me to.

It was this really pretty bluff surrounded by a walkway and Greek columns. I had never been there before, and it was just beautiful. We started walking, and we saw a note labeled #4. SO had been giving me notes all week that talked about his feelings for each month we dated...and #4 was next in the series. It talked about how he grew more comfortable with me and enjoyed the adventured we had. We walked further and found a #5 note. This one talked about the plans that we had made, and how he knew because of it that we cold tackle anything together.

Walking further, we found a blank note. This one said it was a "bonus note" inside, and talked about how much he loved me, and asked me to come to the center of the garden.

Once we got there, my sister started taking pictures. Then I heard a voice behind me. It sounded like DS, but I dismissed it as probably another child because why would my kid be there? Then I heard an unmistakable "mom!" I turned around and my while family was there...my mom, dad, DS and SO. I was shocked.

Now this part I am a little more hazy about because I was pretty emotional.

SO knelt in front of me and then called DS over. He had a silver object in his hand. It had been inscribed with his name and also "three hearts, one family." He said to DS "You may not understand this gesture now, but today is a special day. But, before I ask your mom, I wanted to ask you. I have a special gift here for you. It's a bank for you to keep your coins in. I want to give this to you and ask if, it's ok with you, that we all become a family?" DS said yes. SO hugged him and told him he loved him. He handed him the bank and said "now I need to talk to your mom."

Behind the bank was a black ring box. I started to cry. I don't remember what SOsaid, and had to ask him to tell me again in the car on the way home. He said "With every breath, I love you. You've already made me so happy. Would you make me even happier by saying you'll marry me?"

I said yes.

People behind us in the garden applauded. lol.

I cried. A lot.

My mom said "I have champagne!" So we all drank a glass (and a juice box for DS). My dad toasted and welcomed SO to the family.

It was perfect.

We talked about getting engaged probably 5-6 weeks before DH proposed. He even asked me to give ring suggestions, so it wasn't really a surprise when he suggested we go away for the weekend - I knew he would likely propose. We had dinner at a restaurant with one of those very upscale all you can eat situations - I had unlimited snow crab legs and they were delicious. The actual proposal stuff you'd probably have to know our references to get, but it was very sweet and on a balcony after dinner. I still talk about the unlimited snow crab legs and DH says that is the only thing I remember

I love everyone's origin stories!

I knew it was coming - he had lunch with my Mom to "ask her permission" earlier in the week, we had picked out a ring a couple weeks before, and he told me to get out of work early one Friday. He surprised me with tickets to a Phil Vasser concert. I kept waiting and waiting for the proposal...before the concert..during a love song...the encore...on the walk back to the car in a romantically lit walkway...but nothing. We got home, I was just about to change into my PJs and he told me to come outside. (TBH, I was a little peeved he was delaying my comfy PJs). He proposed under our trellis on a clear starry night, on one knee, in between tears of joy. Swoon!!

H and I are Disney freaks. One thing we did every year was go see the Spectacle of Dancing Lights at Hollywood Studios. That year, once we were in the park, H kept stopping to tie his shoes and I was getting annoyed but we finally got to the Lights section. I always like to have PhotoPass take our pics and H used to be annoyed but he soon learned to go with the flow. At the Lights, we saw the PhotoPass photographer and H said we should just get the picture taking over with. When it was our turn, we got up there and he kneeled down to tie his shoe. Again. I snapped, “Are you seriously tying your shoe again?” He looked up and had the ring box in his hand. Turns out, he knew I would have felt the ring box in his pocket, so he kept it in his sock. He was paranoid so kept bending down to check it lol. Anyways, the proposal with the Lights was gorgeous and I loved that it was at Disney.

My husband proposed on Valentine's Day. (I know, I know...) I gave him some corny t-shirts and he said, "hold on," and closed the door behind him. I heard him shuffling around and then he yelled, "okay!" I opened the door and he was on one knee. I had a total Elaine from Seinfeld moment and yelled, "Shut up!" and slammed the door in his face. It was pretty funny. He wasn't planning on a V-Day proposal, just decided to on a whim. We eloped 5 months later

He wanted to propose at the zoo which I love - we had packed a picnic- but when we got there it was ridiculously packed and I got grouchy and said we should just go home. Hubs (panicking internally) suggested we picnic at a nearby state park and to go for a hike, which we did and cheered me up. He proposed in the truck in the parking lot before we left. We’d gone ring shopping months before (we’d been together for six years at that point) so I figured it was coming at some point but I wasn’t expecting it that day :P

We took a summer trip to the San Juan islands and he proposed on the ferry as the sun was setting. Once we got there, the resort had a private cabin for us (it was gorgeous!!) with a fireplace, a bottle of wine, engraved glasses and chocolate. We had dinner at their fancy restaurant on the water. The whole thing was pretty amazing.

He took me to a restaurant in the canyons. A brunch buffet. Nothing out of the ordinary except when we got there, the waitress kept smiling at him, like the glimmery stars in your eyes kind of smile. Normally that wouldn't bother me (he's so attractive so I'm used to that), but it persisted for the next hour. Every time she walked by, every time we saw her while grabbing more food from the buffet tables.

Finally, at our table, I got sick of it and said something to him about it, but I wasn't looking at him while I was carrying on about how disrespectful it is to me. He said, "Uhm, okay. Here goes." I looked over and saw him on one knee next to me. To this day, I don't remember what he said to propose and we both don't remember if I said yes because we were so nervous.

But I do remember feeling elated and looking out into the patio of tables. We were the highest table on the hill and everyone was looking at us smiling, even the starry eyed waitress, who knew about his plan before we even arrived. I was smiling from ear to ear, and could not stop. I don't think I really ate anything and I had about six different drinks (non alcoholic) on the table. Apparently I kept on ordering drinks and forgetting I already had one. It was exactly that way on our wedding day too. Oh the nerves!

It was on Christmas Day while we were opening gifts with our daughter and close family. I had no idea it was coming. Honestly, it was one of the worst years of both of our lives (we lost 3 family members and both had to be hospitalized for separate illnesses). I was just happy to have the year almost be over. I still can't believe that he went through months of meetings and designing and looking at mock ups, while we were literally drowning (emotionally). It made it that much more special.

We were doing long distance (6 hr drive apart) and he tricked me into thinking he wasn't going to come see me this particular weekend (car trouble or something). I was getting grumpy because I told him I wouldn't leave my job and move up with him unless he proposed. We had gone to look at rings a month or two before, but I was so impatient! I was the ripe age of 24, so there you go. He got our friends to ask me to go to dinner with them at a nice restaurant on the water. My new puppy had a rabies shot the day before and she was vomiting everywhere so I called my mom and DH and told them I thought I should cancel dinner with my friends and they were both like "oh no, she'll be fine! you should go have fun!" So I met my friends there, and we sat down and ordered drinks. About 10 minutes later DH comes up to the table with a huge bouquet of roses and I was SO SURPRISED. I freaked and was like "what are you doing here?! what are you doing here?!" Because I figured he was proposing. And I made him nervous because I guess he thought I meant like "wtf are you doing (i.e. don't embarrass yourself why would you propose)" and I totally blacked out (from nerves, not drinking! lol) and don't remember what he actually said and don't remember if I said yes, but it was great. Our friends took pictures, and a lot of them are unflattering of me, but they're still special to have. The whole restaurant applauded when I stood up and hugged him and put the ring on.

DH and I had been dating 7 years (HS sweet hearts) and knew we were going to get married and had looked at rings several times. He kept setting money aside but we were having the year from hell. We were so broke ( he was supporting me through student teaching on a min wage job) Every time he would get a little money saved up, the washer would break or stove would go out or water heater would catch on fire or we would make an emergency room visit for his allergies etc. We kept putting it off until the time was “right”. Then we hit our all time low when we lost three of our grandparents within 4 months who we were very very close with. It finally clicked that life is too short and we drove down to Sams Club and put a ring on my credit card. He got down on his knees in the parking lot and then we drove around to all our favorite places and he asked me to marry him at each one of them and my best friend took pictures of us. We finished the morning off eating breakfast at our favorite brunch place. In hind sight the ring didn’t mean a thing. I would have married him with a piece of grass tied around my finger.

@purplg8r I'm laughing so hard at the annoyance aspects of your story because it's so similar to mine. Our marriage has followed that pattern ever since. I'm annoyed or crabby and all of a sudden, it's because he's planning something good.
