“Morning” sickness management

It’s early and I’m still being spared by morning sickness for now. However I’m sure she’ll come knocking in 1-2 weeks. Hard. I was pregnant the same time of year last time and swore to myself I would NEVER do 1st trimester over summer again. The heat, the smell, the nausea, kill me. I spent that summer telling my husband (hourly) I felt like a bag of garbage. But I digress.
Thinking ahead and wondering if any of you lovely ladies have tried & true recs for minimizing the discomfort that is ahead. I used to walk around with ice packs stuck in my clothes and just generally hating everything. Talk to me about the things that helped you!
 I’ll start
-ice packs as mentioned or even carrying ice water in my hands
-STMs know to eat/snack often to stave off hunger
-I wish I’d known earlier last time that drinking water can add to the nausea and taking small sips help
-swimming!!!

I unfortunately also have to travel right around the expected onset... cannot describe my dread as I’ve been down that route as well.

Re: “Morning” sickness management

  • I had the worst MS with my daughter.  Puked every day from week 5 to week 40.  For me, running cold water on my wrists helped stop intense nausea, and chewing peppermint gum.  I purchased a sea band this time around just to see if it helps since I’m already nauseous daily.

@Ktrue85 that sounds terrible! Curious to know if the sea bands help. I used them as a kid for carsickness.
  • I also swore I’d never do 1st trimester in the summer again....but here I am, blessed to be doing this again.

    I have to eat constantly.

    Sprite cans in bulk.

    Lots of protein.

    Constantly sipping water.

    Sniffing peppermint essential oil.

    Ginger chews.

Im sicker much earlier this time.

I threw up all the time last pregnancy. Every night when I brushed my teeth (but not usually in the morning). I switched to cinnamon toothpaste and that helped with the gagging a lot.

I used B6 and and half a unisom tablet every night. Helped SO much. Felt like a new person after I started that.
Eta I didn’t start the meds until somewhere around second tri, I think. can’t remember when for sure. I might start them earlier this time depending on how bad it is.

@ginger1228 was it recommended by doc? Something you need approval for? I want to be prepared this time! - assuming i get thumbs up from OB.
@ThePax89 when did MS hit this round?
  • @ssag
I read about it here and asked my doc. Unisom is a sleep aid but it’s like melatonin - basically vitamins. You could try just the b6 and see how that works if you feel more comfortable with that.
  • ageaagea member
@ginger1228 seeing my doc this week and will be asking about all the things... i want to have a full arsenal for this round
  • @ssag - make sure it’s rhe unisom sleeptabs and not the gels. Not sure if it makes a difference but the tabs were what I was recommended and got approved and used.
  • For anyone wondering about Unisome; it was originally manufactured as an antiemetic (similar to Dramamine).  It is similar to benadryl, which is safe during pregnancy.

  • B6 never worked for me, I’ll have to try Unisom.
sweets made me gag, water made me gag.
I lived on La Croix and smoothie king (had them hold the sugar). Ice cold drinks were great. Lots and lots of ice.
Do not cook anything that could stink up the house, especially meat.
I know cold cuts are on the black list, but they don’t smell, so they make an easy dinner.
My Dr prescribed Zofran, but all that did was hold off the vomiting, and I would have a vomit marathon at the end of the week, so my plan is to avoid it.
not looking forward to this phase :(
  • I haven’t thrown up at all yet but just an underlying nauseous/blah feeling that started a few days ago (6w1d today).
This is my 3rd and my other 2 are March babies so I only know summer 1st trimesters. Lol.

  • I have been nauseous everyday in the afternoon since, Thursday, but today I have been all day, no throwing up though. I will be 6 weeks tomorrow. Seems early, but I am happy to have symptoms, to make everything feel more real. It’s my first pregnancy.

(Stupid question?) does unison make you tired then?

Yep. I took half a tablet at night, but felt better the entire next day. But again - I was pretty well through first tri when I started. I think it helps to wake up feeling better and being able to eat a decent breakfast.
  • @ssag unisom + b6 is manufactured together as diclegis- a medication for morning sickness, available by prescription. I took it last pregnancy and the exhaustion made me feel sicker.
With my oldest child it started at exactly 6 weeks. With my second it was around 5 weeks. This one, I’d say 4.5 weeks.
  • Everyone seems to say the best thing for morning sickness is to eat lots of tiny snacks all day, but as far as I can tell that just makes mine worse. On an empty stomach, I feel almost normal, but after I eat I'm nauseous for hours. Doesn't seem to matter if what I eat is a full meal or just a saltine. Has anyone else here experienced this? This will be my first child, so I don't know what's normal yet.

I'm 5 weeks exactly today, and I've been riding waves of nausea every day since I hit 4 weeks.
  • I just bought some preggie pops- going to give those a try and see if they help at all

    @jessier19 I don’t think there is a normal :wink:

Try to stay as hydrated as possible, small sips throughout the hour. I find that dehydration fuels most of my symptoms but I’ve always struggle with nausea

  • Not nauseated here yet but with DD I definitely had it bad.

I was prescribed Diclectin which is B6 combined with something else.

I also would suggest staying hydrated, even just regularly sipping on water can help prevent feeling nauseous.

Ginger Ale ( I don't know if this is a Canadian thing or not ) but anything Ginger also helps a lot.
  • I second the real ginger chews. MS has hit hard this week and they have been a life saver. Also my sister let me borrow her sea bands and they do seem to help. Not completely but definitely make it more managable. Snacking a lot helps me too. Always have snacks nearby (like your night stand for when you first wake up). MS is the worst!

I revoke my previously confident post. I’m dying. My body won’t puke. But nothing makes me feel better. I wake up motn so nauseous that I can’t go back to sleep.

@ThePax89 ughhh that sounds so terrible. I’m still ok (only 4 weeks-ish here) but I’m living in fear of its onset. I know it’s a sign of a healthy pregnancy so part of me wants to know where I’m at- but I’m hoping for as long of reprieve as possible. Last time hit around 5.5 weeks. Hope you find some comfort soon!
  • Like I said before , I had severe HG with kids 1,2 & 3. I’m 6 weeks now and I haven’t had any. It makes me happy and nervous all at once.

  • I feel ya,  I'll be traveling at onset too and I'm dreading it. Always hits around 6-7 weeks. In the past I've done peggy pops, peppermint candies,  ice chips when I can't do water, slushies.

  • I literally had a bag of ginger snaps on my bedside table when I was pregnant with my son. I had one before I even lifted my head off the pillow and it helped sooo much. I was sick with him from 5 weeks to about 37 weeks  :s

I’m only 4 weeks and starting to feel queasy. It only seems to happen after I eat, or during my meal if I take a while to eat it. It’s a little reassuring because hopefully it means things are developing the way they should, but I’m also scared of how it’ll make me feel in a couple weeks if it’s already starting this early...

  • My last 2 pregnancies I didn’t really have much MS, but I’m in a job where I’m much more active now and can’t stop for snacks as much. What ginger chews do you all like?
  • @cmjenkies I love The Ginger People brand

Thank you for the recommendation @pnwkimokeo! Their stuff looks good.

Ginger pills are the only things keeping me even halfway functional right now. I also find this tea really helpful.

Yep, that was me with my first. The act of chewing or putting food in my mouth made me vomit. Luckily that only lasted a couple of weeks though!
  • YEs ! These work so well for me . I get the hard candy ones and suck on them when I’m at the gym because I get very nauseous when working out lately
  • I HATE ginger, even though it helps. The taste makes me gag not pregnant.

I normally drink coffee, but drink chai tea lattes while pregnant because I need some caffiene and the ginger in the chai tea helps quell my nausea for the morning. Halls vitamin C drops help too.

I don’t have full blown morning sickness (yet), but I do have a constant metallic taste in my mouth and I get queasy after meals. For me, peppermint tea seems to do the trick so far.

The annoying part is that I have to sip it constantly, which makes me run to the bathroom every five minutes. As if my bladder wasn’t being problematic enough to begin with. I’m sure people will start questioning my frequent bathroom breaks at work soon, sigh.

I acutally like it in things - food, ginger cookies, tea, etc. I can't do it on it's own. Candied ginger and ginger candies is what I am thinking of that I hate - I could do the ginger Altoids (only the Altoid brand ones), but they stopped making them between 1.0 and 2.0.

  • I also loathe ginger. But it helps. I heard there is a capsule form.

I just bought motion sickness bands. They will be delivered tomorrow. I hope they help a little.
  • The Apple gin gins tast like apple pie.
