Randoms for Week of 5/28-6/1

Re: Randoms for Week of 5/28-6/1

  • @runrinserepeat isn’t the pnp like a half crib half play pen? Is it different than a crib for same room sleeping purposes?
  • Loading the player...
  • @tumbleweed-1 I think the Halo bassinet? Also, mini cribs are a non bassinet option for small spaces. That's what we're most likely going with. I like the Babyletto brand so far.
  • @maureenmce I plan to room share with this baby for 3-6 months with baby in a bassinet/pack n play.  At that point, I'll move this baby into our now office (which will be moved into our main bedroom), until 2nd baby sleeps through the night consistently.  I will probably keep those sleeping arrangements until we move 2nd baby into a toddler bed, and at that point, that baby will go into 1st child's room (its HUGE) and they will share.  We will either have our last baby at that point, or convert that room back into the office.  I hope that all made sense lol

As for keeping baby in your room until baby sleeps through the night, you do you, but for us, that just started at 10/11 months for us.  She was having 1 wake up maybe a night, but has been consistently sleeping 7-7ish since then.  It also would have been IMPOSSIBLE to do sleep training the way we did it (which sometimes consisted of letting her cry in the middle of the night or early morning.  Had we been room sharing, she would have seen us and obviously gotten more riled up, and I wouldn't have been able to take the crying.
  • Definitely the board seems slower than my last one was. I think part of that may be timing; the majority of folks are still first trimester, and lots of folks are just starting to disclose, so prep isn't necessarily in full swing.  Heavy proportion of STMs, too, so fewer people with major FTM drama or questions or whatever. And then, at least for me, there are soooooo many check in threads that are just kind of laundry lists of questions or super-specific in terms of topic; I have a tendency to skip the ones that don't apply to me, and even the ones that do I end up mostly skimming (or skipping entirely) because seriously I'm only one day more pregnant than the last time I answered this question and so are you and my rants and raves would be identical on the STM and Wednesday check-ins and my once-a-month appointments for the next few months aren't going to involve anything interesting and I don't have much to contribute on the symptoms thread, so... :shrugs:
  • Babies and obnoxious cats
We have a 2cd room that is for the baby, but I worry about him/her sleeping in it until at least 6mo/able to roll away/defend themselves from my curious cat.
I have no idea how cat will react to baby. She doesn’t like the kids she’s met (avoidant- not aggressive), and she’s never met a baby.
But my cat is a handful. She opens dresser drawers, opens sliding closet doors, gets into everything. Honestly, our house is half baby proofed already because of her. Last night she slid my closet open, tore into a paper bag (where I was keeping newly purchased clothes for my nieces), and pulled out a pair of leggings.
Anyone else have these problems?  :D I love my cat, but it’s like already having a toddler.
  • @Jens_Hoes The mini crib we're looking at has wheels, so my husband's grand plan is to keep LO in the crib in our room unless we have to do sleep training and then we can roll his crib into the living room so he doesn't disturb DD in her room or see us in ours. But we'll just have to play it by ear to a certain extent. With DD we never sleep trained, she just started sleeping through the night once she figured out how to sleep on her stomach at 6 months. She still wakes up occasionally for teething pain or stuff like that, but otherwise, she's good. Her problem is just that she goes to bed LATE so we can't have her roomshare with a little baby yet. I don't know when exactly that will happen, but I figure with a mini crib on wheels we have the option of our room, the living room or room sharing with DD, so we'll at least have different places to go, depending on how things develop!

  • @tumbleweed-1 yeah we have one like this. I suppose it's probably almost as big as a crib, but it can be packed up during the day if we need it to be, and the baby can sleep in there for as long as we need.

  • Thanks for sharing! I’ll take a look at it
  • @tumbleweed-1 that's basically the one I have too.  We use it at my mom's house for naps (she goes there M-F), and we used it when my daughter grew out of the bassinet before we moved her to the crib in her own room.  I also used it when we traveled out of town. It is also super convenient as a "baby jail" for when the baby is sort of mobile and you need to do things like shower, cook dinner, etc.
  • I have no idea what any of this sleep training business even is, so trust me, as time goes on there will be MANY more questions for all you experienced moms!  I am so unsure and overwhelmed by options for cribs and carseatsb and bottles and pumps.... I'll start asking when I start my registry!

     @Jens_Hoes Lol baby jail!
  • @tumbleweed-1 You could get a pack and play. That would get you through until you are ready to transition them.
  • @scaredunprepared
honestly, it was super overwhelming for me too, even when I did my registry.  To make things simple, all bassinets/cribs as long as they are labeled as such (not co-sleeper, sleeper, napper) are tested and deemed to meet safety standards.  A $100 crib and a $5000 crib, as long as they were both safety tested, are in reality the same. They will keep your baby contained and safe. It is mostly about what sizing fits your room and color/style.
The same goes for car seats. I believe all car seats sold go through the same testing, and have to be deemed safe in order to be sold. So a britax and graco are the same in the sense that they will keep your baby as safe as possible as long as you install correctly and put your baby in correctly.  Some are smaller than others, and fit better in some cars, and have different colors for different preferences.  But you honestly cannot go wrong.

We did a set-up like this with my son.  I never had concerns about suffocation because I was very aware of his every movement, every time he stirred or made a sound it would wake me up.  I used furniture risers to get the height of the two beds the same.  It was great for MOTN nursing because I didn't have to actually get out of bed to get him so it was a lot easier to fall back asleep.  You can buy a specific product called an Arm's Reach co-sleeper, but we just took one side off the crib, I didn't see any real reason to buy a separate thing.

  • @Jens_Hoes thank you for the explanation. It's very reassuring to know that I can't necessarily make a wrong choice.
  • For people wondering how long babies can sleep in bassinets, let me drop this picture here:

My son was just over 2 1/2 months when I took that picture. (And yes, he's sleeping in the bathroom because it was the only room that got totally dark in the apartment. Sigh.) I'm sure not all bassinets are created equally -- this one is on a stand with legs that don't quite touch the floor so it can be rocked back and forth, so that could have contributed to the problem. But yeah, babies get wiggly pretty early on.

The Pack 'n Play, though, is a solid option for sleeping in long-term, especially if you get a (non safe sleep-compliant) PnP mattress to make the bottom a bit softer. I've mentioned it elsewhere, but it's what my son sleeps in when we travel and works great.

As for roomsharing, I'm hoping to get this kid out of my room as soon as I can. It was convenient to have my son next to my bed at first, but after a bit I felt like my movements woke him up.

  • When I read the rules there seemed to be emphasis on posting things in correct categories so as not to clutter the board. I like to get to the point and not have to scroll for days to read everything. If I see a thread title that intrigues me I’ll engage but with big variable threads like this one I find it really hard to engage. That’s me though, I have the attention span of a nat.

@PensiveCrayon either I (unintentionally) spotted you in FB or you have a doppelgänger!! Do you sew? Are you in Fluff Love Sewing?

ETA nevermind, I looked and she has 3 kids, I'm pretty sure you only have one? But I swear she looks exactly like you based on the couple pics you've posted! It's crazy!!

  • Chiming in a lil late re pricier cribs and car seats. Another factor, an important one for us, is usability. Our $300 NextFit is a CINCH to install, and takes us, for real, maybe a minute in any car, and it doesn't budge. My mom bought a $100 Evenflo or something, and three adults could not get that thing confidently installed. We tried it in two different cars and we couldn't get it secure enough.

Cribs, not as dramatic. But if you're not a handy person, you want the one that's super easy to put together (and convert, if you're doing that). Sometimes that means paying more. (I recommend this one.)

Guys, um...I just hopped on Netflix and the first thing that came up was a preview for a new mini-series documentary (?) called American Vandal. Please watch the trailer and tell me what I'm supposed to think. Is Netflix poking fun at all the true crime stuff or is this 100% in seriousness?

ETA: @CecilB93 I can see the resemblance...sorta? Our coloring and short hairline is very similar, so I can see how if you don't know my face well you would think it was me. Also the side part!

I opened up this thread to like 60 new posts last night so I'm late to this party, but I agree with @AGK2015 about all of the check-ins.  It just seems like there's too many, so everyone's interactions just get spread too thinly.  This is just my opinion, but I find the ticker changes to be kind of useless, even though I do participate in them. I don't read the others really, but I have noticed that most of them get like 5-10 posts and then they die. My Tuesday one is just barren and no one really interacts with each other in it. I'm not sure how everyone will feel about it,  but getting rid of those might funnel more participation to the STM/FTM/PGAL check-ins and other threads, and avoid so much repetition between threads and clutter on the board.  But feel free to shoot me down!  I will still do them if everyone likes them  :)

  • @PensiveCrayon American Vandal is a spoof and it’s absolutely hysterical. You should watch it. Every time they said “do the dicks” I laughed so that will tell you a little about my maturity level...but it’s definitely funny.

  • Also @hkom I feel pretty meh about the check ins as well but I do participate. Mine is particularly dead because it’s on the weekend so that might be why.

  • @rosebud332 I figured that out on further investigation  H was intrigued so we watched the first episode. It’s very silly but I think we’re done watching for the time being. There are just so many other shows in the queue that the dick jokes are being pushed to the bottom!

We also watched a few episodes of the new season of Arrested Development and I’m feeling meh about it. I just feel so out of the loop with all the fast-pace jokes after so many years.

  • I agree that the daily new week check ins do not get much traffic. I like participating in many of the other discussions since I feel like others are more responsive.

@hkom For some reason the tickers have definitely been slow to get rolling in terms of actual interaction and getting to know each other, but I am hopeful that will change and would like to keep them around a little longer to see if they do because i found it to be great bonding once you get further along, especially people who share your exact due date and are at the exact same phase in pregnancy. Maybe we just need to take note of what @CecilB93 said and try to respond to each other and start conversations rather than just post our answers. I'll try to remember to do that in the Ticker especially! (I know ours is slooooow!)

As as far as being less slow overall, I would love more GTKY type threads! And now that we're a more established group, I think a certain amount of one off posts are fine as long as they apply to a good chunk of people (like maternity leave plans would be a great one, or room sharing thoughts, stuff like that.) And also I think threads for shared interests like the crafting and currently reading threads are awesome and we could have more of those!
  • Maybe we could try due date check-ins instead and see if those get more responses?

  • @maureenmce yes, maybe it would help to have people who are due close to each other and are going through similar testing/symptoms/milestones etc.  With the ticker change there are people who are 4 weeks apart and I think it can be harder to connect.   I also think there are still people who don’t know what ticker changes are.  I think setting up a poll is a good plan.

  • I agree about having the check-ins more connected to the week you are due. I am due 12/31 and there are others on the Monday thread due practically a month before me. I think it would be more beneficial to check-in with others who are still a few weeks off from 2nd tri.
  • @maureenmce Same. Wah! I most definitely know how crappy it feels to be so far behind. Especially when you're deep into the first week of January and everyone is cuddling their babies (some of who are freaking TWO OR THREE MONTHS OLD AT THIS POINT) and you're just like...dying inside.
