Product Spotlight: High Chairs

Posting this one a little early.

Let's talk high chairs.

  • We got this one from Ikea and it has been perfect. I like that it doesn't have fabric on it since kids get stuff everywhere. It's so easy to wipe down. The best part is, it's $20!!

  • @kiwi2628 that's really cool. And at first I thought you meant a human patient and then realized who posted! Made more sense when I realized you meant a dog.
  • @SawyerRichardson

My mom and I went to Buy Buy Baby yesterday, and were completely overwhelmed by all the options.  And everything seemed so complicated and potentially hard to clean.

Then we found that one at IKEA today, and decided it was the right one- easy disassembly, easy to clean, no fabric to deal with.  They also have some inflatable cushions you can get if you need to make it smaller or cushier.
  • Is it better to get one of those x-in-1 chairs? That eventually coverts to a booster?
  • We have the Graco Dou Diner. No complaints. The top tray comes off so it’s easy to wash. I’ve machine washed the fabric once but mostly just wipe it down. It could probably use another deep clean though. I removed the over the shoulder straps since we never use them (I’m more afraid of getting him out quickly if he chokes) and they just got dirty all the time. Haven’t transitioned it to a booster yet, but we might be ready since he eats off a plate now.

Our not so secret high chair hack is to stick a command hook on the back to hang bibs and keep them handy.
  • @tinattt23 that's the one I've got on my list right now.
  • If you have a small house like me (1300 square ft) I highly recommend just getting a high chair that connects to a kitchen chair.
  • Sooo I have a couple high chairs. We have the FP space saver, the IKEA antilop (or whatever) and the stokke one. The space saver is great except you end up take the fabric off because it gets filthy and then there are a lot of crevices that food can get into that are super hard to clean. I'm trashing that one soon and getting a new one for baby (probably a different brand, but same style). The stokke is AWESOME. I got it used and in great shape for $15 and it's my absolute favorite. I love that an adult can sit on it. In fact, my hair dresser comes to my home and that's what I sit on. The IKEA one is great, except I feel that the gap between baby and the tray is too big. Food is always falling in there. Granted, I still use this as our outside high chair, we keep it in the shed, but I think this would drive me a little batty if it was my only high chair.

We also had the grace duo diner, which I loved (especially the removable tray). Ironically, I just pulled it out today as we are moving in a few weeks and I must not have cleaned it well enough before I put it away because it was moldy

  • We got this one when we were pregnant with our first:

We LOVE IT! We were planning ahead so we could use one for multiple kids since we hoped to have them close in age. It has a booster seat and the highchair so two kids can use it at once. It adjusts in height and can lean back. and it comes off so you can attach just the top part to a chair. It does so much. It's awesome. We also got lucky and it was a lightening deal on Amazon when we got it- so we got a really great deal.

We have this one https://fisher-price.mattel.com/shop/en-us/fp/high-chairs-boosters/spacesaver-high-chair-geo-meadow-dkr70 since we live in tight quarters.  I thought it would save space however you can't push the chair in and I'm always bumping into it as I try to walk by.  The pros are that it reclines and has several heights so you can use it infant through toddler.  Also, I find the cover handy, I just take it off and throw it in the wash.  Its almost impossible to stain.  I do wish that we got something like this one https://www.amazon.com/Cosco-Simple-Fold-Chair-Posey/dp/B00PNXI0KG?th=1 so that we could just fold it down and put it between the fridge and the wall, but then we would still end up needing a booster.
  • About when does one actually need a high chair? I put it on our Amazon list to add later for registry completion, but when would I even (approx) start using it?
  • @chopchop25 we registered for ours, so we had it early, but didn’t even put it together until DS was almost 6 months. He still didn’t use it until he was like a year since I BF him until then, so we even could have waited longer.

We have the keekaroo height right chair (https://www.target.com/p/keekaroo-height-right-high-chair-with-tray/-/A-14221835), and we love it. Not the cheapest option, but it’s easy to clean, very well made, and converts up to a regular chair basically that an adult can even sit it once you don’t need it as a high chair. The version we got (not the one in the link, because I’m on mobile and didn’t feel like searching for it) came with an infant booster seat that goes on the regular seat so that when they’re littler, they have more support and are up higher.  I’m really pleased with this high chair.
  • @chopchop25 we started using ours around 4-5 months - basically whenever you plan to start introducing solids is when you’ll want one, I think.

Regarding brands, we have a Chicco Stack high chair: Chicco Stack Highchair, Modmint https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01DPH484I/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_9fD-AbN0RFV40

It’s ok, seems comfy, and converts into a high chair that can sit on a chair, and a booster-type stool. Two complaints: no wheels, and the fabric kinda sucks to clean. I’d probably get one with no fabric if I could do it over again.
  • https://www.amazon.com/Graco-TableFit-Baby-Chair-Rittenhouse/dp/B00AHVR6VS/ref=sr_1_5_s_it?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1526321358&sr=1-5&keywords=graco+high+chair&th=1

We have this high chair and it was great. I actually bought it on Cyber Monday from Buy Buy Baby (online) after DD was born. I got it super cheap, then used a BBB coupon, then used gift cards. I think I paid like $15 for it by the end. The reason I chose this one is the height is adjustable. When DD was a bit older we would leave the tray off and just pull her right up to the table to eat with us. I don't know if we will get a different one this time though. We don't have any room to store it in the kitchen and it's pretty large.

We also bought this booster seat and left it in the car. We kept showing up to different houses and nobody had high chairs, so this was really great to have handy. I really resisting buying it for a long time, but I gave in right before we took DD on vacation and would definitely need a place for her to eat. It was worth the $20 since it eventually replaced our high chair completely.
  • We registered for this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01AZC36Z8?colid=23I27LWMDYG9G&coliid=I2LCV2AGBV84RM&ref=br_ADD_TO_CART_title_link

mainly because we camp or go out-doors a lot. I figure it will also fit nicely in the car for when we are out and about.
  • @chopchop25 good question!! That's on my mind as well.

I have another one...so my main dining table is pub height. Is that going it be an issue with high chairs?

  • Possibly helpful extra information:

We weren't overly concerned with high chairs for DD so we registered for a cute Minnie one but had no adjustable seat. My nephew has a Graco chair with the adjustable seat that leans back and he uses it a lot even now (he's almost 3). I was telling the ladies in my ticker change board that we all (my husband, his brothers and the wives) hang out every weekend...sometimes during the week during Dolphins and Heat season, and the high chair was where my nephew would fall asleep and then be transferred to his bed. He also started naps there as well before being moved to bed. Again, may not be helpful to everyone but if baby likes being around you and company and needs you around to fall asleep the high chair has soooo any uses. Moral of the story: we're registering for the more expensive chair with the adjustable seat because Motherhood is hard and this makes it a little easier.

  • @jemmerjams The one I posted on here would work for that if you want baby to be able to sit as high as you. It's probably not the most important thing, but I would say it is nice for baby to be able to sit as high as you at the table.
  • We have the ikea antilop too from DD and love it. It’s simple, fits our style, easy to clean, and was cheap! They have a blow up cushion you can purchase for it, then I got a cute cover for it from Etsy. Still pulled in less than $50. Will just be getting a new cushion cover for this baby and call it a day.

Thanks for that feedback! I started looking at some of the cheaper ones, debating if we really needed the adjustments. This confirmed that we might as well have them, especially if someone buys it for us.
  • Oh also, I don’t know if this would go in the high chair discussion or if it would go on it’s own somewhere, but in addition to our house high chair, we have a travel high chair that hooks onto a table, and we keep it in the trunk all the time for going out to eat. I think we have this one (Inglesina Fast Table Chair, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00IOGIM9S/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_raE-Ab01WWHMD), but can’t remember for sure if that’s the brand we have. Honestly, while I know most restaurants have high chairs, this had been so great because it lets DS be right up at the table with us, and doesn’t have the gap between him and the table that a regular high chair does at a restaurant (since they don’t come with trays like the ones at home).  Also, the restaurant ones kind of skeeve me out sometimes, so it’s nice to have our own. We’ve gotten so many parents commenting to us in restaurants about how great it is, and we really love having it.

I second this! However, I don't necessarily recommend it if you have a high top table. Now that Z is bigger, he likes to rock in it and he's almost flipped himself over. My mother has the same high chair but a normal kitchen table and doesn't have this problem.

@acdc1109 Yes! We would put DD in it just to hang out with us with a couple of toys while we ate
  • @chopchop25 We started using ours around 4-5 when he started solids. Then I’d wished we brought it out sooner as a place for him to sit while we ate.

@jemmerjams My mom has a high top table. She got a normal height high chair (that folds for storage when we aren’t there). On the highest setting, the tray is level with/maybe a tiny bit lower than the table. So he’s basically at out height, but you can’t scoot him in so it takes up a good amount of space.
  • @sammierose464 anytime girl. I wish I could get away with the Ikea stuff but my kid is codependent and demanding

thank you for posting this response...my mind was trying to picture how exactly that worked for a human and it was getting strange. :|
  • we have a safety 1st portable chair (same link as @acciocoffee) https://www.amazon.com/Safety-1st-Convertible-Booster-Brights/dp/B006ZISQGG/ref=sr_1_14_s_it?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1526321602&sr=1-14&keywords=booster+seat+tray
we used it all the time for our kids, so ended up getting a second that we usually keep in the car. at home though we have an old wooden high chair that my dad's father or grandfather made 60+ years ago. My parents refinished it for us as a gift when our daughter was little and we love it. **Not that that helps anyone creating a registry, just that while i am most certainly not poo-pooing added features, because amen to anything that helps make parenting easier, i did want to share that if that is not in your plan and/or budget you will still be all good!

Side note...they also refinished an old collapsible changing table and it is one of my absolute favorite baby things. easy to move from room to room, takes up very little space, and easily managed with one hand. Again ours was made by a family member several generations ago, but similar to this... (not available  :/ but you can see the basics...just a wooden frame with a piece of heavy fabric attached)

  • We registered for this one (just moved back from saved list to registry thanks to everyone's input here!)

I am looking at the Joovy nook. We had a graco one last time that the height adjusted and then we put it on our counter stools. It was nice but messy..

We have the keekaroo too! Love it! So easy to clean and now that my son is two it's just a regular chair at the table that anyone can use, but he can get into easily because of the steps. Definitely recommend!!
  • We're getting this one: Inglesina Fast Table Chair, Cream https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00IOGIN60/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_aiZ-Ab18E19BC

I have a few friends who have used it (or a similar style) and I think they are such a great alternative to a traditional high chair. Plus it's SUPER easy to transports to grandparents houses and restaurants.
