Re: High Risk Check In 4/17

  • How far along are you? 25 weeks
Why are you considered high-risk? Ehlers Danlos Syndrome
Any additional monitoring or testing this week? Nope - had an office visit to confirm I could fly but no testing
Any questions/concerns/news? Not really - FX for an uneventful trip!
What positives are you seeing with your pregnancy today/this week? I've figured out some triggers to the severe pelvis pain, which means I know how to avoid them, so pain's been doing a bit better!

GTKY: Going along with last week's question, if you could live anywhere and cost of living, career, family, etc were not a factor, where would you live and why? Either back to FL because of Disney weekends, after-dinner walks on the beach year-round, swimming pools, palm trees, and few/no painful cold snaps...or to SC because all of my friends have moved there and I miss them and it's got a temperate but 4 season climate as a nice compromise for DH.

  • How far along are you? 28 weeks

Why are you considered high-risk? previous history of hypertension, AMA

Any additional monitoring or testing this week? Nope, just monitoring my BP at home.

Any questions/concerns/news? I've developed red bumps, almost like mini pimples all over the top of my belly.  That's on the list to ask the doctor about next week!  I'm also going to ask them for a breast exam, since I won't be having an annual this year.

What positives are you seeing with your pregnancy today/this week? Officially 3rd trimester now!  I've had a lot of gripes this week actually, need to work on more of the positive.  Maybe going to the chiropractor and/or getting a massage will help with that - I've been fighting headaches and neckaches almost daily.

GTKY: Going along with last week's question, if you could live anywhere and cost of living, career, family, etc were not a factor, where would you live and why? We recently moved to where I always said that I would want to live!  It definitely takes all those things into consideration though - close to family, good schools, close to career, etc.
  • Glad you're finding some triggers @gingerbride26 - that's awesome!
  • How far along are you?  26 weeks 4 days

Why are you considered high-risk?  Type 1 diabetic

Any additional monitoring or testing this week?  See the clinic every two weeks where they look at my insulin doses and discuss changes that I mainly do anyways as I've been doing this for 24 years.   Nurse always brings up that I take different amounts of insulin  which drives me insane because I eat different things.  Frustrating because most of the ladies in there only have gestational so very different.  I also got my bloodwork back and it looks like my iron is low.

    Any questions/concerns/news?  None

What positives are you seeing with your pregnancy today/this week?  Super tight and painful stretching in my belly but I think my girl is finally moving up a bit.  Sitting super low since the start.

GTKY: Going along with last week's question, if you could live anywhere and cost of living, career, family, etc were not a factor, where would you live and why?  Maybe Hawaii?  Love where I live now too but very expensive.
  • How far? 26 weeks

  • Hey ladies,
    How far along are you?

    27 weeks
    Why are you considered high-risk?
    Twins
Any additional monitoring or testing this week?
I had an us that showed baby b being a little bigger than a. I really want to try for a vaginal birth, they’re both head down even but baby b cannot be bigger than a for vahinal delivery my Ob said. I’m going to ask for more info. Having GD testing today yuck. It’s more common with twins so I’m anxious. Baby a was a little behind where I’m at week wise in growth so looking forward to Ob going over my us more in depth today.
    Any questions/concerns/news?
    Oops above
What positives are you seeing with your pregnancy today/this week?
Lots of moving in there and they’re still cooking
GTKY: Going along with last week's question, if you could live anywhere and cost of living, career, family, etc were not a factor, where would you live and why?

probably South Carolina the people are friendly and weather is nice plus beach!
  • How far along are you? 27 weeks, 3 days

Why are you considered high-risk?  hypothyroid, borderline gd, gastric sleeve patient, medication maintenance

Any additional monitoring or testing this week nothing until next Wednesday

Any questions/concerns/news? my new ob told me that although she doesn't believe I have gd, I am borderline. She gave me the choice to either go to the gd class and start the gd diet with checking my levels 2-3 times a day or continue to check my levels 4 times a day and reevaluate next week. I chose the latter. I really do not want to go on a special diet for the remainder of the pregnancy.

What positives are you seeing with your pregnancy today/this week? Baby girl is kicking a lot more. Fun to watch my tummy move randomly.

GTKY: Going along with last week's question, if you could live anywhere and cost of living, career, family, etc were not a factor, where would you live and why? Washington. It's beautiful, the weather is just what I love, and its always been my go-to dream state.

  • How far along are you? 28 weeks today!

Why are you considered high-risk?  AMA, high BP

Any additional monitoring or testing this week growth scan today—baby’s growth was perfect!  I feel like I have so many appointments ahead of me, it is a little overwhelming.

Any questions/concerns/news? my GD test came back negative!  Yippee!  One less thing to worry about.  At 32 weeks I have to start NSTs.  Does anyone have experience with that?

What positives are you seeing with your pregnancy today/this week? Baby is doing well and I’ve been feeling good.

GTKY: Going along with last week's question, if you could live anywhere and cost of living, career, family, etc were not a factor, where would you live and why? Washington DC, or Chicago are two of my favorite US cities.  Someplace beautiful would be nice too though, the South of France, Tuscany, or Santa Barbara.
  • @emzie54 I didn't twice weekly NSTs with DD and will start them at 32 weeks with this pregnancy as well. Basically, you sit in a recliner with two monitors strapped to your belly - one to measure fetal HR and another to measure contractions. Some offices will also give you a button to press when you feel movements from the baby. This goes on for at least 20 minutes or until the Dr can establish good HR in response to fetal movement. If baby is napping, they will give you some juice or ice water to get then moving.

    How far along are you?
    30 + 4

    Why are you considered high-risk?
    T1 Diabetes

Any additional monitoring or testing this week?
Just regular OB this past Wednesday and everything looks good.

    Any questions/concerns/news?
Got the paperwork with info for my c section and was happy to see I only need to arrive 2 hours prior to surgery (so 5:30 am). Still need to arrange to have someone stay at our home to take care of DD though.

What positives are you seeing with your pregnancy today/this week?
Despite being more active (cleaning mostly), no new contractions or major body discomfort.

GTKY: Going along with last week's question, if you could live anywhere and cost of living, career, family, etc were not a factor, where would you live and why?
If I didn't have to work, I'd choose some place tropical and laid back, like St John or an Hawaiian island. If I had to work, it would be somewhere out west with mountains but still close to major cities.
  • @andie2lee Welcome! It's nice to see another T1 around here :)<3 Was that an Endo nurse that commented on your varying insulin needs? (I hope not!) I've found it disappointing, the lack of knowledge surrounding T1 in the day practice medical field. I had to calibrate my CGM during a PCP visit and the nurse was like, "Wow, you must have terrible control". I tried to educate her on my stellar control and why a CGM is helpful. She jusdt stared blankly and then asked if I wanted my A1c done, after I already told her I had it done the week before with my Endo :|
  • emzie54 - +1 to what @TalesOfASocialIntrovert said regarding NST's.  I had a couple leading up to induction once I went over EDD.  Bring a cell game or kindle or something because they are super boring but also cool watching the needles.  If you've ever been sent to L&D for "monitoring" it's just like that but with the clicker.  DD HATED them and would beat the crap out of the monitors.  They'll also pick up if you are having contractions as well as baby's heartbeat - we could see the contractions 5 min apart on the NST the day I was induced lol

Thanks for the info @TalesOfASocialIntrovert and @gingerbride26 !  It feels like it’s going to be such an incredible timesuck, I feel a little frustrated about having to do it.
  • @emzie54 it's not all bad - I kind of enjoyed them.  Everything else was frenetic preparing for the baby so 20 min sitting in a quiet room feeling kicks was a nice break.  Granted mine started at 40 not 32 weeks!

  • @emzie54 I was still working when pregnant with DD and the hardest part was peeling myself away from a bevy workload prior to maternity leave. Once I got to the appt, it was nice to just sit and relax. I also liked seeing her HR and movements on the monitor but I also like medical stuff. I did find out I was having contractions at 32 weeks through the monitoring and wouldn't have known it otherwise (they weren't painful, more like a throbbing in my neck). They never progressed but it was reassuring knowing she and I were both doing well. As @gingerbride26 said, just be sure to have something to occupy your mind if you want distraction while during the NST. I tried working sometimes but again, preferred to relax so it was too difficult for me to concentrate on work.

@gingerbride26 and @TalesOfASocialIntrovert  I think once I’m at the appointment, with my feet up, listening to baby it will be a nice respite (provided that I can be present and let go of the annoyance).  The annoying part will be having to juggle my schedule, leave work for 2 hours twice a week, fight crosstown traffic and then the waiting for the test.  I know it is important to do it, I just feel like I am going to be spending all my time at the hospital for the last two months of the pregnancy!
  • Mini rant: just had an NST yesterday, as there was an issue with the ketones in my urine.  I had also been feeling like crap since about 10pm the night before, with cramping, contractions, and lower back pain (had the same issue a couple of weeks ago).  I understand dehydration will cause cramping/contractions, and I understand ketones are a sign of dehydration--but why even put me on the monitor, if the midwife isn't even going to check the strip?  (I could hear the nurses' conversation in the hall outside the door--one wanted the midwife to come check, the other answered it was only dehydration.) I'm AMA, and have a history of preterm labour, grr.  Drinking tons of water...still having issues today.  Will be calling the midwife if it doesn't ease up.

That being said--I do find NSTs relaxing.  It's nice to sit back and be forced to do nothing.  I even got juice yesterday, in an attempt to get teeny man moving around a bit more (I hadn't had breakfast yet--appointment was first thing in the morning, and I had to get my two bigger boys to school).

  • ethnomusicwhat that is incredibly frustrating.  I'm so sorry.  I can't stand it when medical professionals require you to do something (like the NST) and then make you feel stupid for doing it.  Hugs and hope the contractions calm down.

  • @gingerbride26 Thanks.  Yesterday was even better--had *another* NST because the cramping hadn't gone away, even with crazy water intake.  Midwife sees something funky on the strip, sends me to the hospital, who seem to think there's no reason for me to be there.  Spend 4 hours being monitored/testing/ultrasound there, only to feel like a crazy person.  Oh well; at least little man is ok.  As for me, looks like I'm just going to have to deal with the contractions--no impending labour, just a lot of discomfort.

  • Oh man, @ethnomusicwhat ! Sounds like we're in a similar boat :/ I went to L&D on Monday for contractions 3-6 min apart and lasting 1.5 min over an hour. Got IV fluids and contractions spaced out but didn't stop, so they sent me home. Another NST today with the MFM and he's like, why didn't they check your cervix?? But then also didn't check my cervix, despite still having contractions (not regular but still constant throughout the day).

I did have early contractions with DD and it never resulted in cervix changes so at this stage, they aren't too concerned.
  • @TalesOfASocialIntrovert I'm so sorry to hear you're going through something similar.  What is freaking me out this time around is that I *don't* typically feel contractions until I'm well into labour.  Even with my previous, where I went into preterm labour, I initially called the midwife because I thought it was odd I was having "indigestion" every 5-7 minutes.  When I actually *had* my last little guy, after 5 weeks of bedrest, I went in for my 38 week checkup, only to discover that I was SEVEN CM DILATED.  No clue--felt nothing. I mean, I'm not complaining; I'll take it.  It just means every time I *do* feel contractions, it's unnerving.

I feel better that there are no cervical changes so far, so I think I'm just going to push for a cervix check at every appointment from this point on.

  • i was a frequent flier at L&D with dd because of contractions with no cervical change.  So I've kind of trained myself to ignore them...which is prob not good...
I actually thought of you @ethnomusicwhat last night....i was having painful indigestion 9 min apart... i was getting worried but didn't get closer together and eventually stopped.  Also have woken up to back cramps 2 times in 2 weeks but not time-able/cyclic.  I just have this gut feeling this kid is coming early... i look and feel at 28 weeks how i did at 38 with DD.

  • @gingerbride26 I'm pretty sure that will be me this time around; ignoring everything until it's clear I can't ignore it anymore.  ;) Sorry to hear the indigestion was an issue; I've had cramping waking me up, too.  I'm also pretty sure this little man will be at least a couple of weeks early--I'm at 32 weeks, but look (and feel) about full term, and little man is measuring in the 97th percentile, so I don't know how long I'll be able to hold him in.

  • @ethnomusicwhat it's the can't ignore anymore part that gives me anxiety... labor was only 3 hours with dd and 1 hour after water broke...so if I ignore completely I'll end up being Seth myers' wife and not making it to the hospital...  so I'm being crazy lady jumping at evert bh this time.  The convo about inducing labor keeps making me lol that was me last time, this time I'm barely active and avoiding labor triggers  just keep cooking until induction kiddo!

  • @gingerbride26 Yeah, that makes me nervous a bit, too.  DS2's labour was a bit longer than DS1, but both were fairly quick.  What keeps me (somewhat) calm is that my water never seems to break on its own, which in DS2's case is, I think, what actually slowed that labour down.  With him, they finally broke my water at 9 + cm...it was like a fire hydrant, lol. With the first, they broke it at 4 cm.  Went from 4-7 in an hour, and 7-10 in 45 minutes! (No one believed me when I said I had to push.)

Do they have your induction scheduled yet?  I've been meaning to talk to my midwife about the possibility of scheduling something for this one, given how massive he is.  My placenta is borderline low, so it looks like I'll get one more ultrasound in before he comes, which may help gauge his size.

  • @ethnomusicwhat with DD my water broke on it's own 2 hours into active labor while I was sleeping.  Similar here that no one believed me when I had to push - I went from 6 to 10 in 15-20 min.

At my last checkup they said they would set a date for induction at my 36 week checkup.  Since my 6 week follow up with DD they've been talking about inducing with my 2nd to prevent a home or car birth.  That was before we discovered my medical condition that makes me high risk.  Everyone is on board for induction but no one has specifically talked about timing...I have a growth scan at 32 so assuming they're waiting for that to make timing decisions.  From what I can tell it won't be much before 39 unless he shows growth restricted at 32 or something else moves up the timeline.
