Re: Currently Reading

  • Just downloaded for listening on audible Unconditional Parenting and The Whole Brain Child. This more for my toddler. When I was pregnant last time I really liked Brain Rules for Babies and Simplicity Parenting.
  • Loading the player...
  • I just finished:
    Beneath the Scarlet Sky
    A Mother’s Reckoning
This is How It Always Is
    It Ends With Us

    Up next:
    The Great Alone
  • I just re-read Treachery in Death. I don't get time to read anymore.

  • I've taken a hiatus from my novel to focus on pregnancy books :) Currently reading What to Expect When You're Expecting and Expecting Better. For fiction, I'm still in the middle of The Great Alone. @booksandcoffee let me know what you think when you start it!

I heard it’s hard to get into at first since it’s slow to get started but that it is good overall. If I don’t fall asleep at 8 when I put the kids to bed, I’m starting it tonight!!!
  • In the middle of the hearts invisible furies— wonderful so far! Need to get back into it (but then it’s less time for trashy bravo shows)
  • I am a fantasy nut... currently reading the third book in a Jeff Wheeler series, The King's Traitor.
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • @purelex I've heard of Jeff Wheeler. What is this series about?
  • I'm currently reading If at birth you don't succeed by Zach Anner. Ive got A cursed child by JK Rowling, a Craig Ferguson book (forget the name), and the 3rd Outlander book up next. I haven't had time/energy to read in ages though.

Currently reading what to expect when expecting hahaha... I need another book so I'm enjoying all the options on this post
  • @ginny_203 - When I first started it I was a little like, I don't get what the hype is all about. And then I got further into it and it got so exciting. It really is such a great book.

  • The outlander books are great but seem to take me forever to get through! I am ready all the light we cannot see and attempting present over perfect.
  • I've been trying to get through Ready Player One since the fall and I'm stuck. I think once I've finally finished it I'll start The Name of the Wind.
  • @ginny_203 How are you liking Expecting Better? I heard mixed reviews.
@eahayes I absolutely loved this book!!
@brookepdavis I generally dislike nonfic & memoirs, but I couldn't put down The Sound of Gravel. I hope they make a movie of it.

I just finished The Hate U Give for book club (I'm not looking forward to the discussion as I was pretty sick while reading it and now feel sick every time I think of it. Huge eyeroll.) I really liked it for YA.
  • @MouseMama817 I think Expecting Better is great. I love science/data and women being treated like people with brains and the books is all about that.

  • I am in the middle of "The Last Mrs. Parrish." It's been good so far. Not sure what is up next.
    Pregnancy Ticker

  • @MouseMama817 I think where Expecting Better went controversial was when the author started talking about there being no data to prove that drinking (a limited amount of) alcohol causes issues with your pregnancy, and that she seems to be anti-epidural. Other than that, I think the book has a lot to offer!

Just thought I'd jump on here to recommend the girlfriends guide to pregnancy. It is very non-scientific but laugh out loud hilarious and a lot more real and relatable.
  • I love this! All books I haven't heard of! Time to beef up my list.

@cm716 - I have heard really great things about that one but I had forgotten about it. Need to look for it at my local library!

I'm currently reading Molly Fyde and the Blood of Billions and The Science of Mom.

I just finished Outlander: The Fiery Cross. DH is reading A Breath of Snow and Ashes and warned me that there's a trigger in there so I am waiting until LO is born to read it, although just knowing it's coming is enough to help me through it.
  • @wildrainbow, this particular series is about several kindoms fighting over the rightful king of the realm, at a really basic level...  think Game of Thrones but not as bloody and sex filled.  The series includes a pretty neat magic system that has to do with water and fountains... those that are "fountain blessed" have random magical abilities that range from visions of the future to being able to create illusions to using words/language that makes people believe whatever you are saying.

It was a neat series (I finished all 6 books since my last post, haha)... also, it's clean so no cussing or sex if those things bother you.

  • @purelex that series sounds pretty cool. Have you ever read Shannon Mayer? Her Elemental series is prolly the best I've ever read.
  • I'm not feeling GoT A Feast for Crows at all. I kind of just want to dump the whole series and move on. I loved it 2 years ago but I think my tastes have changed. I'm considering just skimming it all since we have books 4-5 already.

We also got "The Birth Partner" guide for dads and doulas. Pretty intense and informative. I have two books on the baby's first year as well.

  • Just forewarning, I'm a sci fi nerd when it comes to books and a nerd in general when it comes to pregnancy knowledge right now.

I just got the latest book in the Iron Druid series by Kevin Hearne and I can't wait to dive in...but first I'm reading (and taking notes on) What to Do When You're Expecting Two. It's helping me feel a bit less overwhelmed at the thought of welcoming 2 babies into the world as First Time Parents.

  • Went to the library the other day and picked up “Into the water” and “The Honest Life”.
I like the Honest Life so far, although its a *little bit* hippie for me. And i started Into the Water yesterday and got halfway through it, its so good! I love mysteries and its the same author who wrote “Girl on the train”, which I loved.
  • I just finished Ina May's Guide to Childbirth and really liked it! There was a little bit of borderline fear mongering about medical intervention which wasn't my favorite, but I got a lot out of this book anyway. I definitely recommend it!

I love the entire outlander series! I've read it twice. And listened to all the audio books once. I even had Claire at the top of my girl name list (DH nixed it)! I'm dying for the next book to come out with the way the last one ended.

My current read is little fires everywhere by Celeste ng. It's turned into a super interesting dilemma. I've been browsing Reese Witherspoons book list for new reads.
  • For those who are reading or have read "What to Expect" did you read it while you were in each month? For example I am 14 weeks today, and just finished month three. I'm just wondering if I should skip ahead and them come back and read the months as I get to them or to just read straight through. I hope this makes sense.

  • @tessiesmom26 I didn’t read it all in one setting, but read the parts as they were currently relevant or interested me. So like, the spot I was at, or looked in the index for specific symptoms I had or food or excercise or whatever I was thinking about. I still go back and reference it.

  • @tessiesmom26 I usually read a month in advance and will go back and skim for the relevant week once I pick it up.
  • @cm716 I just started the audio book this morning. Hope its good!

  • I was going to get on and tell you guys the books I checked out from the library, that haven't even been opened, that would fit in much better with this post. BUT I am going to be honest instead. I am totally reading some sexy books on my kindle because I just haven't been in the mood and I thought maybe they would help and this series (masters and mercenaries) is amazing ;) - feel free to judge lol!
  • I finished The Great Alone last night. It did start out slow but the last 100 pages or so went so fast! I will include the caveat that if you're sensitive about cancer deaths at all, you might want to prepare yourself before reading. I wish I had known that before reading, but it was still a great book and one I'd definitely recommend.
  • I'm still trying to finish "I'll Be Gone In the Dark" by Michelle McNamara. It's not that it's not fantastic - it is! I just haven't been very diligent with my reading lately and have been spending too much free time mindlessly scrolling through Instagram.

@cm716 and @the-lo I loved both of those books!
