GTKY: Podcasts

I love listening to podcasts and I enjoy trying out others’ favorites. So, if you’re an avid podcast listener, what are your favorites and why should I listen too?

I think GTKY can be any day. If you like creepy stuff, Lore is great. It’s about different myths and stories and what’s “true” about them, first hand accounts, etc. It’s  very cool. I’m a big ol scardey cat so I have to listen sparingly. I also listen to something called Hidden Mickeys which is a silly/adult Disney podcast. It’s kinda stupid but it makes me laugh. And for history buffs Hardcore History is great.

I listen to homeschooling podcasts, like Cultivating the Lovely.

Fun fact, in the next few months I’ll have my own podcast series with a ministry I run.

I used to listen to a lot more podcasts but these days I don't have as much time. Some past favorites: Stuff You Should Know, Stuff Mom Never Told You (when Cristen and Caroline were the hosts), Serial (season 1, I didn't enjoy season 2 as much), S-Town, This American Life, Snap Judgment, the puzzle/word games one from NPR I can't think of off the top of my head...I'm sure there are more I'm missing. Oh, Writing Excuses and The Story Grid podcast for author-y stuff. And back when I was pregnant with my son I listened to a whole lot of The Birth Hour, which is women telling their birth stories -- all sorts. It's very good, but I'm kind of jaded on positive birth stories right now and I'm not sure if I'll listen to more to prepare for this next one. Gah.

These days I listen to The Daily Zeitgeist because it's a super entertaining way to stay up on the news (and also it's very funny). I have a bunch of Levar Burton Reads I'm slowly working my way through, but his reading style kind of annoys me sometimes. Just me? Anyone else? I started listening to Movie Crush, a spin-off from one of the hosts of Stuff You Should Know, but have sort of stopped. I'm religious with Nursing and Cursing (it's so so good, seriously) and a podcast by a couple of literary agents called Shipping and Handling.

I love true crime podcasts. Some of my favorites are Breakdown, Up and Vanished, Serial, In the Dark, Accused, and A Killing on the Cape. I’m also getting into the Coffee Convos Podcast with Kailyn from Teen Mom 2.

Lore is great ... Hardcore History is great.
I love both of those podcasts! I actually sent Aaron Mehnke a postcard from The Stanley Hotel (Estes Park, Colorado) where Stephen King stayed and was inspired to write The Shining. TMI: Where we may have conceived!

ID10T (FKA Nerdist) ... Tanis was fun ... My all time favorite is How Did this Get Made? which is about movies and very funny.
I didn't know that the Nerdist had a redesign (I've been meaning to listen forever!). I have enjoyed Tanis but I'm already behind this season, and I will have to check out How Did This Get Made? It sounds promising.

Stuff You Should Know, Stuff Mom Never Told You (when Cristen and Caroline were the hosts), Serial (season 1, I didn't enjoy season 2 as much), S-Town, ... Writing Excuses and The Story Grid podcast for author-y stuff ... The Daily Zeitgeist ... Nursing and Cursing (it's so so good, seriously) ... Shipping and Handling.
I love SYSK! Also, have you listened to C&C's new podcast Unladylike? I like it overall, but I really miss their SMNTY. Otherwise I never got into Serial and S-Town, but DH said that I need to give S-Town another go. I will definitely check out the authory podcasts and Shipping and Handling. Meanwhile I didn't like the Daily Zeitgeist, maybe their first comedienne just rubbed me the wrong way, but I have never heard of Nursing and Cursing - I'm intrigued

I listen to a lot of stuff, each day if I can (but I often only get in one hour of listening). Stitcher is cued up each day to play me:

    1. NPR Up First -- because I love news
    2. BBC Global News -- and world news
    3. Bonjour l'Europe -- and French news
    4. Grammar Girl -- because it makes this editor's heart happy, and I like the usage reminders
    5. Stuff You Should Know -- because Josh and Chuck are hilarious
    6. FoodStuff -- because I love food and stories about food
    7. This Week in Science -- because Science is life! Been listening to this one since 2003
    8. MacBreak Weekly -- because I'm also a Mac nerd who loves digital assistants and Sonos devices

No podcasts over here (I'm really more of a reader than a listener when I've got the time), but I do love me some NPR when I'm in the car. This American Life, Wait Wait Don't Tell Me, All Things Considered, Planet Money, The Mother, even Car Talk (may it rest in peace).

I also read a lot of the transcripts from The Weeds because I've got a mega nerdcrush on Ezra Klein.

One more I forgot to mention: The Splendid Table. I had to make myself stop listening because I was seriously buying so many stupid pantry ingredients. But I love it nevertheless. :joy:

@echo-charlietango Oh yeah. You’ll be making preserved lemons in no time. Even if you have no idea how to use them when they’re done.

Ps can we be BFF’s when you get to Alabama?

I like a lot of true crime podcasts as well.
Definitely Season 1 of Serial. And if you like that, you should check out Undisclosed. The first season is all about the same case as Serial is. Only this is much more in depth at the case. The host is actually the cousin, who is also a lawyer, of Adnan. I also liked season 2 but stopped listening after that.
I also liked A Killing on the Cape, A Murder on Orchard Street, and I just started listening to Dirty John this week.

As far as other genres go, I started one called Invisibilia, which as been okay. Can't go wrong with Dave Ramsey. I also really liked My Dad Wrote A Porno. Yes you read that correctly. It's about a guy that found out his dad was writing a porno in his free time, so he reads the story on the air. It is definitely not something that will turn you on. It is absolutely hilarious! But definitely do not listen to it in a public place!

DH also endorses How Did This Get Made?

#1 I love cooking international foods and I just haven’t had a good excuse to make preserved lemons yet

#2 At this rate I think it’s becoming an imperative! Besides, if YH is thinking career, he may want to ask MH questions (even though they’re different airframes)

I listen to a few of the ones already mentioned. Others I like:
    • The Allusionist, it’s about language. Always interesting, often cheeky.
    • Myths & Legends, stories from mythology and folklore. All the usuals like Hercules, Thor, Gilgamesh, Snow White, etc. But also lots of obscure ones.
    • Harry Potter & the Sacred Text, they read each chapter with a theme in mind and then unpack the text.
    • Cry Me a Riverdale, anyone that watches Riverdale should listen to this. It's Mikey from Movies with Mikey. Pretty funny.
    • By the Book, they live by a different self-help book for two weeks. The voice of one of the hosts is a little grating.
    • The Breeder's Digest Podcast, a charming parenting podcast. There are only 8 or 9 episodes  :(
    • Slow Home Podcast, it's about slowing down and simplifying your life. I kind of hate-listen to this one...
Revisionist History with Malcolm Gladwell is also really good. And Reply All. And Radiolab. I'm subscribed to too many podcasts.

I’m always looking to add some more joy in my life so I love podcasts that will make my laugh.

A friend of mine recently turned me on to My Brother, My Brother, and Me which is a comedic podcast in which three brothers answer to weird yahoo answers questions.  It’s good lighthearted fun.

The same brothers also do a podcast called The Adventure Zone which is a long form fantasy/adventure story told using the mechanics of a DnD game.

Welcome to Nightvale is also really good if you enjoy eerie and paranormal stories.

@PensiveCrayon I was going to say the Daily Zeitgeist! I love the range of topics and it's funny! I guess it helps that Miles is my brother from another mother.
@katy0990 I'm going to have to check out that teen mom podcast... it's my guilty pleasure!

    This American Life
