UO 4/19

Do you have opinions? Are your opinions... Unpopular? If so, they go here! Share, compare, judge the hell out of your peers- I mean start a civil exchange of information and learning because it's Thursday and on Thursdays we like our opinions to be unpopular.

  • 100% agree about sports @stothi. I enjoy going to sporting events for the social/entertainment aspect but am not interested in watching on TV. People get waaaayyy too invested IMO.

  • @EErin86 how tall are you that 5'6" equals short? Lol. I'm 5'6" so I don't quite meet the cutoff but my hair is so bright I think it adds at least an inch of visual impact. You won't lose me in a blind spot, I promise!

Weird confession? I'm fascinated by anyone who falls outside the range of "normal" size wise. Little People in particular just fascinate me! But anytime I see one in public I force myself to act cooler than I am and treat them just like I would any other stranger on the street. So if there's nothing about them other than their height that I would talk to someone else about, I don't stop, don't start a conversation, don't look at them more than like 10 seconds longer than I would anyone else. In my head I want to run over, say hi, and talk to them but what would I say? "Hi! I see you are a Little Person! Wanna tell me all about your genetic variations? Can I touch your fingers? Do you want to be my friend?" But I refuse to be that asshole so I just go about my business. If they make eye contact I smile and nod, but unless they strike up a convo I just move on and let them go about their day. So far no one has started said convo :'(
  • I agree with both of yours @southernlady07!
    @EErin86 I'm 5'3" so I guess I would weird you out? LOL

  • @EErin86 I’m 5’9” so I could obviously carry on a normal conversation with you and know you will not be plowing me down in the mall. Interestingly enough, most of my friends are short, not short just to me, but short compared to the population in general. I’m talking lucky if they are 5’1”
  • Haha I'm glad I started this height topic! I'm 5'11" and maybe not by accident I think all my close lady friends are 5'6" or taller. We had a new friend move to the area and she went from the tallest of all her friends to the obviously shortest of all of us new friends.

Also I'm terrible at basketball. I do play volleyball though and I think the strangest thing that happened to me was going to an after party at a tournament where it seemed everyone was 6'+ I thought "wow is this how normal heighted people feel??? I can't even see across the room!"

@SkilledSailor don't worry I'm sure the tall people you talk to also appreciate the distance
  • @EErin86 I’m 5’9” and am the tallest of every girl I know (by several inches) EXCEPT my BFF. She’s 6’ and I feel short next to her. It’s glorious.

  • @EErin86 My IRL pregnant friend is 5’11 also. She is 27 weeks today and carrying this pregnancy like a rock star! I think height has its advantages and makes pregnancy look easier (I know it’s not! She is uncomfortable, just like normal height people)! But she looks good!

@stothi gotcha! I was like... holy crap. That’s a long time to do anything! I only realize this bc I read an article about not interrupting for 17 seconds (that is the long time the average person can go or something) and using that technique to not offer aid when LO is asking for help to do something and see if he can figure it out. That is an eternity.
  • I'm 5'6" but I have a LOT of hair, so if you don't squish it down I'm 5'6.5" or even 5'7"...when the nurse says 5'7" I'm like "really? can you try again? You gotta squish!". One day I had a little braid at the crown (well, little for me, for others I'm sure that's how much hair is on their whole head) and it was game over. They demanded i was 5'7", and I let it go, and the next time I went in the nurse was concerned that I was shrinking. Sigh.
  • @MandyMost I'm 5.6 1/2 (and proud of that 1/2!). And, I also have a ton of hair. What I've found to be weird is that at the Doctor's office, they don't seem to care if you are wearing big heavy boots that add both height and weight. They never give me a chance to take them off! I'm not trying to seem smaller or lighter, I just would prefer accuracy. I won't be surprised if I've "lost a pound or 2" next week. Because I will be wearing ballet flats instead of heavy boots. I also will seem accurately 1/2 inch shorter!
  • @magnolia209 1/2’s are important!!
  • I'm creeped out by tall people-I'm 5'3.5" and definitely on the taller side in my family. My dad is maybe 5'8"? I actually am physically uncomfortable looking up (lifelong thing-maybe my neck is funny?) so I have a hard time talking to people more like 4-5 inches taller than me, because I can't comfortably look at their face. The world is so full of shoulder blades, sternums, and breasts for me. Also, my husband is 5'11". I refuse to stand and talk to him unless he's at least 4' away, and if he's standing and I'm sitting I make sure something changes-I don't even like having him in the same room in this case. I'm another weirdo.

UO: layering tank tops under other clothing feels awful, I really really hate it.

  • @pourmeamocktail I'm 5'4.5" and my husband is 6', and whenever we have an argument I always try to get us on the same level. So if he's standing, I ask him to sit, or he'll refuse to sit so I stand. He doesn't understand that I feel like I'm being talked down to when he stands above me like that. But I don't care how far away he is, he can be right next to me or across the room, makes no difference to me.
  •  I'm 5'2" I'm not looking forward to the last month of pregnancy where I'm not comfortable driving myself because my bump is pushing in to the steering wheel or I can't reach the pedals :confounded:
