@rmg85 I love Evangeline! I fell in love with that name after reading "Devil in Winter" by Lisa Klypas ... romance novels are my guilty pleasure lol DH nixed that name, though.
Like someone else said above, I grew up with a super popular name (4 others in my neighborhood alone, including my best friend) so I am so so wary of popular names. However, I also am really set on a name that is easily understood/spelled. For our DS we went with "River", but our next is a girl and all the names I like turn out to be at least in the top 50. What is with this weird generational mind meld with the name?! How much do y'all think it really matters? Am I being too stubborn if I nix a name I love just because it's #20-something on the baby names census?
@sageandlavender I stressed about that when naming my DD. I had a name that I had loved for YEARS... but it became SUPER popular. Like top 10 popular. I almost went with a different name, but with like a month to go, I decided, you know what? Who cares if it’s popular. I love it, and that’s all I care about. And the name fits her perfectly. It may seem off-putting now... but if it’s a name you love, then who cares how “popular” it is.
@pink_polkadots going through that right now...I have loved Olivia for a girl since I was little and now it’s the most popular name and I know a million people with an Olivia! I love it, but struggle with not wanting my daughter to be one of 12 Olivias in her class. Ugh.

It is honestly alarming how often I have thought "ooohh what about THIS name"... thinking I don't know ANYONE with that name... and go look it up on the census only to find it's in the top 30. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I've always insisted on having not having a super popular name, not just because they will have to go by their name plus last initial in school, but also because the name can come to seem dated a decade or more later (Anyone see the Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt with the baby named Linda?)
But I have always loved the name Jack for a boy (nn for John) and it's hard to give that up. IMO common is better than yooonique
@sageandlavender I also grew up with a popular name. I was hoping my kids wouldn't have to go through that, but it appears the "old fashioned" names are coming back. My son's name is gaining popularity, and was on the top 10 list the year he was born.

I grew up with a super common name, and would often have another girl in my class with the same name. I never remember it being annoying or obnoxious. It was just what it was. I think as adults we tend to overthink things and situations for our kids when in reality, it’s not THAT big of a deal and our kid probably won’t care about it as much as we do.
@pink_polkadots I guess you're right. When I really think back, even with my bf, my other bf's little sister, and the girl down the street that I babysat ALL sharing my name, I honestly wasn't bummed about it as a kid. I mean, it was a little annoying always having to have my last initial appended whenever people referred to me, but it was just the way it was.

Finally in the end one of us (and neither one of us remembers which) suggested Ella. I was a little gun-shy because it is in the top 10 and because we live in an area where a lot of people speak Spanish and the Spanish word for she is spelled the same way is Ella though pronounced differently. In the end, my husband and I are agreeing on the name became more important than how popular it was.
But you know what? It's actually been kind of fun. Because it's so popular I have so many people tell me that they love that name and they think it's so pretty. I get tons of compliments.
Compared with my son whose name is Shane-I get a completely different reaction.
So, coming from a mom who picked the super popular name, I would not change it and have no regrets. Ella suits her.
@pink_polkadots I do love the name Avery, but I PERSONALLY would do the traditional spelling because I would not want her to deal with correcting the spelling her whole life. But it's such a personal preference.

Our boy name would have been Jackson - my name is Jackie, and my grandpa who passed away a couple of years ago always called me Jackson - his name was John but everyone called him Jack. My cousin stole it and named his baby boy Jackson a year or so ago so now it’s out!
Would it be weird to give this lo (only if a girl) the same initials as DS? I know one person who shares initials with her 3 sisters and doesn't mind, but they are the only ones I know.

@middleschoolmommy not weird at all. I know a girl who has 2 daughters, pregnant with a third, and all of their initials are ACE. She uses it as a hashtag all the time.
@TheSouffleGirl I LOVE the name Freya it is one of our top picks if #3 is a girl! Other girl names are Mildredge (nn Millie or Midge) and Miriam. No clue for Middle names.
For boys we are not sure. The middle name will be Dale. I love Maxwell (nn Max) but do not like Maxwell Dale. I also like Avar or Ivar but I don’t know I could see a grown man named that but not a baby.

@middleschoolmommy - same initials is absolutely okay. Where I grew up, lots of families do it. My brothers both have JKK as their initials, my best friend and her 2 sisters all have the same initials and my hubby has the same initials as his sister.

Irrational reaction, but I'm irritated they went with Louis! If LO is a boy Louis is what we already have picked (family name) now I'm worried there will be an influx in babies named Louis and instead if a nice traditional solid name it'll be the new trendy thing to do *fist shake* darn you royal family

I have had friends who go in with a top 2 or 3 names and decide what name the baby looks like when they are born. Hopefully you will start to fall in love with a couple.
In case you didn't see my post from the names we have settled on we will go with Orin for a boy and Odette for a girl. I am super excited to find out what we are having in another 6 weeks
I think I'm pretty set on the name. DH actually suggested giving her the same initials as me. So we are going with Everly Blaine. I had (before marriage) the same initials as my dad and Blaine is his middle name. DS has FILs middle name, so... Its only fair!
My daughter is called Serena Mae. Named after the serene water of the marina we lived at in Australia and where she was concieved. Mae is short for Margaret which means Pearl or star of the ocean.
