Manufacturer's Shortage on Progesterone in Oil- 2 vial limit

Just a heads up for everyone- there is currently a shortage of PIO again (this happened before, apparently) so each pharmacy can only give each patient two vials at one time. I looked it up and apparently its actually the pharmaceutical grade sesame oil that is in shortage. This applies to all pharmacies since it is coming from the manufacturer. Just be sure to plan ahead and know that no matter how long you take it, you will only be given two vials at once. I hope this is helpful.

    Married: 5/09 ~ TTC Since: 10/10 ~ PCOS ~ Progesterone from 10/10 - 2/11 ~ HSG on 3/18 - Clear ~ Started Metformin 1000mg & Clomid 50mg 2/11 ~ Metformin upped to 1500mg 4/6 ~ 6/7 Now going to SG and put on Clomid, Ovidrel, Gonal F, Prometrium, Estrace ~ IUI #1 7/2 = BFP!!!!!! March 6th our little man was born. 

    6/17/13 - Ovidrel, Follistim, Prometrium ~ IUI #1 7/2 = BFP! March 17th our St. Pattys day baby arrived

    10/29/17 - Started process for IVF, got pregnant & miscarried a 2nd time since summer. 2/22 started stims - Menopur, Gonal F, Cetrotide - retrieval 3/6 - , PIO, estrace 3xday - FET 4/18 = Beta 1: 616; Beta 2: 1342 = BFP

    I believe Glen Rock Pharmacy in NJ makes their own in olive oil. I'm not 100% on this though this i don't take pio and I'm on Crinone instead...but this is what I've heard in case anyone needs it and wants to check into this

    Poor Ovulation & MFI (very low for all counts)

    Clomid for ovulation- 10/2007 & 11/2007- no effect- Told we'd never conceive naturally.
    Natural BFP- 10/2008, Miracle Boy born 6/18/2009

    TTC #2- Since 6/2011
    1st RE apt- 2/2014
    TTC put on back burner 6/2014-1/2016
    Diagnosed w/ Thyroid Cancer- 3/2016, Radiation 9/2016 (no ttc x 1 yr)
    Resume RE- 9/2017- Myomectomy 6 Fibroids- 12/2017
    IVF w/ICSI #1- 8r,5m,5f, Transferred 1 5d blast, 0 made freeze. Bets #1-8dp= 7 :(

    I remember this from last time :( Some local compounding pharmacies can make this for you, in a different oil, too. It's worth asking.

    I was able to get mine compounded in olive oil, no problem.  It was still just the difference between getting 2 or 3 vials at a time, and they deliver next day, if needed (though I recommend calling a few days before you know you're going to run out.)

    prudence9-2  this is with Freedom, who my RE and my insurance requires. I got my two vials today and its a different brand, but it looks like different manufacturers all have shortages and are enforcing the two vial limit with the sesame. 

    Two vials was fine for me for now, just surprised.

    @greenhillgirl oh wow! I remember the last time that there was a shortage and I was able to easily get PIO from Freedom!!! 

    Ill keep that in mind. I’m on PIO now. And if I get a BFP I’ll need more!  :)

    Yep! When I talked to the pharmacy about my PIO order, she said there was a shortage but was able to give me 3 vials. Said they usually get 10 vials at a time in here and there, but would be until May she thought till things got better.

    @mcgeeva Maybe your doctor has someone local to your area. Mine had a local pharmacy fill it. Thinking maybe one's that aren't super big may have more supply on hand since they aren't a main source everyone goes to :) Or they can order you a PIO that isn't in sesame, but another oil that is just as good, just not as much of a popular choice.

    There is a specialty fertility pharmacy but not sure about the prices. I used to go here before because I had no coverage and they offered discounts. I’ll def have to ask about that.

    I go through Mandells and got five vials, but I’m not sure what oil it’s in. This was about a month ago before my first cycle was cancelled. So glad I got the extra vials!

    I got my PIO (sesame oil) weeks ago from Schraft Pharmacy in NJ( it’s local) in prep for my April FET  but I only Got 2 vials they said nothing about a 2 vial limit. That being said my SIL who stopped her PIO in Feb had to get hers in olive oil because of the shortage.  I will definitely ask because I’m REALLY hoping to need more  :)

    mcgeeva don't worry, I just got mine through Freedom from a refill order I called in on Thursday by noon Friday next day delivery. It's just annoying that they will only give two vials at a time. I'm on 1.5 ml a day right now so that means calling in for refill less than every 2 weeks. Oh well.

    Yup only two viles :) so just means I’ll be watching it to call back for more earlier if needed.

    I actually didn’t need more for at least another week. But because of this thread I got nervous and ordered now.
