Infertility

Hi! I’m new here (loss mentioned)

Hello. I’m pretty new to these boards, but not new to TTC. My husband and I have been trying for coming up on three years.

Bit of my history: We’d been trying for 1 year 5 months by the time we got our initial tests done with an RE. Before we got our results we randomly got pregnant, but had a miscarriage just before 8 weeks. RE didn’t find any issues but we’re had no luck since then. We did one IUI late last year and were planning to do more but unexpectedly got approved for a funded IVF cycle for this May, after initially being told it would be early 2019, so we’re forgoing additional IUI and moving on to the much more daunting IVF.

I’m hoping that I can provide some support for those who are here and gain some online buddies who get what I’m going through. My friends are fantastic but none of them are in a similar situation and they’re going to have to deal with the emotional beast I’m likely to become, so they may need some backup :)

Anyway, hi!

Me: 32 DH: 33
TTC since 05/2015
Dx: Unexplained infertility

BFP 10/14/16, MC 11/09/16
IUI 12/06/17 - BFN
IVF #1 05/18 - 11 retrieved, No Fertilization
IVF #2 05/19 in Prague - 15 retrieved, 12 fertilized via ICSI, 9 blasts: 1 fresh transfer, 8 frozen. BFP - 1st beta: 43. 2nd beta: 57. 3rd beta: 88. 4th beta: 112. Bloodwork, ultrasounds and waiting until we figure out what's going on  :(

Re: Hi! I’m new here (loss mentioned)

  • Welcome! I'm guessing you're in Ontario? I just went through my funded cycle in December after being told I wouldn't have a spot until March 2019. Snagged an earlier spot when they ended up having extra funding. I've had 2 unsuccessful FETs and just prepping for my next FET with a new protocol - hopefully 3rd time's the charm. I feel so fortunate that my treatments have been covered. I can't imagine going through all this failure while also worrying about cost/debt.

I suggest spending time on the previous IVF cycle threads.  You'll be able to learn a lot about protocols and the process and it will arm you with a bunch of knowledge so that you can advocate for yourself before and during your cycle.

    GL!

  • Hi and welcome! I agree with the above poster about joining a board that coordinates with your IVF calendar. We may be cycle buddies bc I'm due to start my 1st round of IVF too in early May! I don't believe that one has been created but just keep an eye on the main IF thread for it. I'm sure it will pop up. Another bumpie suggested to pick one of the monthly IVF check-in threads and read through it from the beginning. It's amazing how much information you can gain from doing that. I've just finished reading through the entire March 2018 IVF thread. These ladies are a wealth of information and support. One last tip, hope on other threads you see, like an intro thread and welcome new members & introduce yourself. You just may find someone who's in the same boat as you. Give support=Get support. GL to you!

  • @tosh24, yes, I am in Ontario. I also feel very fortunate to have the funding. I don't have any coverage for medications, so not having to pay for the cycle cost really helps. FX for your third transfer!

@cmarieb35, sounds like we'll be new and figuring this out together!

@mcgeeva, @roisis, @mich_elle, Thanks for the warm welcome and the tips! I'll be checking out some of the previous threads, as suggested.

  • @cmarieb35 Yes, we got walked through the details last week at our IVF Orientation. It's an Antagonist protocol. I'll be on Puregon, Menopur and Orgalutran will get added in shortly after. Triggering with Ovidrel and hopefully doing a single fresh transfer and freezing any extras. We're starting with my natural cycle so Day 1 should be around May 18th, which I think has us at around May 31st for ER and June 5th for transfer.
I'm not exactly known for my patience either. lol I guess we'll be getting plenty of practice for the next little while. I'm sure it still feels a long way away, but it will be exciting to get your details in April. FX your surgery goes awesome and you can start ASAP!

  • @sarah_fox that seems super quick!  I kind of want to pick my RE’s brain about the whole no bcp thing, I wonder if it’s an option for me.

Thank you!  It does feel far away but then I put it into weeks and it’s only 6.5 weeks away - it’ll be here soon!!  Especially once I get all the info on 4/9. I know my body needs to heal so I’m just trying to know that and do what I can between now and then.  Are you doing any supplements or anything?

  • @cmarieb35 Sorry for the huge delay in replying! I haven't had a chance to get on here since early last week.

I'm taking a prenatal vitamin, Coenzyme Q10, and vitamin D, but that's it. The Coenzyme Q10 was the only thing that was suggested when I asked if there was anything we should be doing to be our healthiest for the IVF.

How did your surgery go? I was thinking about you last week because I knew it was coming up. I think you said you don't really get a lot of info afterward until the April 9th, appointment, but hopefully things went smoothly and you're feeling good.

  • @sarah_fox No worries!  I was looking into the Coenzyme Q10 but since I am starting IVF in less than 6 weeks and everything I’ve read says it can take several months I ended up brushing it off.  What kind do you take?  Did your RE suggest it, or someone here?

My surgery went well!  My RE actually called me to check on me which I probably shouldn’t have been surprised by but was.  He said there were no surprises and that it went well, so I guess that’s all I can ask for.  It’s weird that I don’t have tubes now.  And my anxiety is at all all time high.  Hopefully once I have my appt next Monday to talk through the actual IVF I’ll feel better about it!  What are your next steps?  Wait for the 5/18 cycle to start or is there any testing or anything to do in between?

  • @cmarieb35 It's some brand called Be Better. Pretty sure it's a drug store brand. The nurse who did our orientation session recommended it and google seemed to back her up. It's probably not going to make a big difference, but I figure it's not going to hurt anything either.

I'm glad your surgery went well and you have an attentive RE who checks in on you. I can imagine that this time between surgery and the IVF information is not very fun. Anxiety is the worst, but totally understandable. I'm sure it will be a bit easier when you know the plan after Monday.

I'm just waiting right now. I probably should have made an effort to track this cycle, but with the amount of monitoring appointments heading my way in May/June, I kind of just don't want to focus too much energy on it right now. My plan is to try to be active, get in the habit of getting to bed on time and getting up early (have to be at the fertility clinic by 7:30am, and I usually drag myself out of bed after that, so I have to change that), and try to actually follow the LCHF diet my dietician recommended for me (not for fertility. I have Celiac disease and was still having some issues after being gluten-free for several years and she thinks it may help. Though, I have heard some good things about it for fertility, so it can't hurt). Have you heard anything useful/helpful for preparing in the weeks leading up to IVF? I feel like I should be doing something, but I'm also pretty sure that if there was some small thing I could change in 6 weeks that I wouldn't be here needing IVF. But it can't hurt to try, right?

  • @sarah_fox I think taking this time to not track is good.  You’re right, you have more than enough monitoring and poking coming your way, you might as well enjoy some peace!!

I will have to look into that diet.  My H has a bunch of food issues including gluten (not celiac, more IBS symptoms up to 4 days after if he eats ANY), maybe it would be good for him. He has lost like 20 lbs since cutting out the things he can’t eat.  Have you had any food testing done?  It’s expensive, but especially when TTC the body and inflammation due to food sensitivities can have an affect I think.

I was told to take vitamin D and folic acid.  I don’t take a prenatal I take a multivitamin that has those and everything else I need.  I also have some acupuncture herbs.  I’ve been doing acupuncture weekly since January, last week would have been week 10 but I missed due to my surgery.  I’m a little weary of going back tomorrow but I’m assuimjng she just won’t put anything on the belly.  I had started it before I even found out about my tubes hoping it would help and figure continuing to go might help so I’ll go this week and next and then go down to biweekly and will probably do it more around my transfer depending what she says.  I don’t know if it’s actually doing anything since my cycle is still pretty much the same, but my AFC was good so hopefully it’s partly because of acupuncture doing it’s thing to help make more/good eggs!!

  • I'm not sure the best way to go about this, so I'm going with this, and hopefully it's ok:

I'm resurrecting my original intro post from about 15 months ago because I completely dropped out of this board for about a year and should reintroduce myself, but I didn't feel like a whole new thread was necessary.

In May 2018 DH and I did our first round of IVF and had no successful fertilization, and thus no embryos. I was totally not expecting this and we ended up taking about a year off from trying to recover, investigate (spoiler: we didn't find any reason for the outcome we had) and travel. We still very much wanted to have a baby, but had lost so much hope, that it became very difficult to face spending so much money on a second round and potentially having the same outcome. I ended up investigating alternative options, and we decided to travel to Prague for our IVF cycle. The total amount spent ended up being about the same, but in addition to all the treatment and medication costs, we were able to fly from Canada to the Czech Republic, spend 25 days there, cover the cost for taking time off unpaid and pay for a few treatment extras like acupuncture, and Microfluidic Sperm Sorting. I was also able to be way more relaxed and enjoy myself during treatment because I didn't have work stuff and regular life stuff to handle on top of treatment. I just had tourist stuff, which is my favourite stuff :)

This cycle started on May 19th and we had much better results than last time. We ended up having a fresh transfer on June 5th and froze 8 excellent quality embryos as well.
*TW* While we did get a positive pregnancy test, when I went in for my beta at 14dp5dt it was only 43. It's been low and slow-rising since. We've been checking semi-regularly since then and as of 23dp5dt (June 28th) I was at 112. So we keep checking and wait to find out if it's going to be a CP or an ectopic. *TW*

So, I'd like to get active again in this community. I'm hoping that I'll be able to give advice and support to people who end up in similar scenarios to what I've had, and since it seems like I could be actively pursuing treatment again for the foreseeable future, I might need a bit of support myself. Once I know when I'll be ready for my first FET, I'll join a thread, but until then, hi again!

    Sorry this is so giant!
