All my friends who had kids before me said wipe warmers are a waste. My kid has never cared about the temperature of the wipe.
Someone gave us one at my shower last time so we figured we’d give it a try. It was a huge pain keeping it clean and even with it filled properly the wipes still got dry. They were also a pain to get out of it. It broke after a couple weeks and we never missed it.
Seriously don't waste the money or registry space on a wipe warmer. They aren't worth it. If a wipe is feeling especially cold, just breathe on it like SkilledSailor said.
Though, I don't think DD ever cared about the temperature of wipes.
@BusinessWife I'm cheap. We tried the Bum genius one, and the Honest company. My son's butt did not like the Honest Company, and the Bum Genius scared me a little. When I sprayed off my wipes after use, they made suds in the toilet. I didn't like that either, and didn't like paying for any of it, lol. I don't want to use coconut oil or any soap in a spray bottle, because it will cause clogs. My at home bottle is a target brand big one intended for cleaning products (but sold empty of course), the to-go ones are travel pump sprays for toiletries. In them is mostly water, but I put a bit of witch hazel in there as it's good for skin and acts as a preservative too-so the bottle doesn't get moldy or mildew filled. Lasts for months. It's a very very rough estimate, but maybe 1 part witch hazel to 10-15 parts water.

Regarding wipes, I should add... we went through tons of wipes before a BTDT mom told me you don’t need to wipe for pee! She was a couple of months old at this point and we’ll wipe before and after bedtime, or anytime she has a poop, but if it’s just pee and the diaper wasn’t super loaded, I just change it. (I will say that she hasn’t had any uti’s and very few instances of diaper rash, so that’s helped.)

Agree with this and I think my first was a few months old before I learned it too (or maybe I was just lazy..)
Also, we're a cloth diaper/cloth wipe family. I like cloth wipes better than disposable. They clean better and soak things up better. I just change my babies in the bathroom on our long counter with the sink right there. I only use water on my wipes. I do, however, use disposable wipes when I'm out.
A random related note is that I use a puffy plastic bathtub mat as a change pad. It works great and I just throw it in the bathtub when it needs a cleaning.

I don't wipe for pee either. Only poops. In general we don't use any extra products on his skin unless we need too. He's almost never had diaper rash or any skin problems. He was almost a year old before he got his first diaper rash and it was really mild and just needed like a day of rash cream, nothing crazy.
We have to wipe for pee because DS is a large baby/toddler and is circumsized and has had adhesions before due to his baby fat burying his penis. Now he gets a courtesy wipe at every diaper change. It’s been much better now that he’s thinning out and getting taller, and is now habit.
Team cold wipes. I’m not here to raise a diva baby. He never was bothered by cold wipes, either.
This is amazing - really? You don't have to wipe when they pee? And, wiping less will prevent diaper rash? I would have only learned this the hard way! I'm so glad to hear from you all with experience! We will be using disposable most likely (apartment living - we don't have our own laundry). But, my husband and I both have sensitive skin, so I am already anticipating a sensitive skinned baby.
My son got more rash with less wiping, but we do the simple cloth wipes that are mostly water. There's no one right answer, figure out what works for you and do it. It might be a cloth diaper thing in our case-they don't hold the pee away from baby as well as disposable diapers do.

@magnolia209 I don’t know if it prevents diaper rash, I’m just saying I haven’t used wipes other than for poops in about a year and the only diaper rash issues she’s had have been from pooping issues... so it’s not hurting. Since I have a girl I have no idea how this would affect a circumcised (or non circumsized) boy, so I would talk with your pediatrician to ask them specifically. (Also I fully plan on using wipes all the time for the first few months.)
Can anyone who nannies or uses a nanny share tell us how people found you or you found them? What all is involved? How do you determine cost per day/hour? I'm curious about this, don't think it's in the cards for me, but others might benefit from this info too. @jaylii@ashh2018
@nlc8424 I was a nanny for a nanny share for two years. First, the parents found each other and agreed on hours the nanny would work and how much they would pay. They also agree on location, which alternated between their homes every two weeks. Then they posted the job on Care.com, so that’s how I found them. They paid me a flat rate for 45 hours per week. I was also given two sick days and four PTO days per year. Another thing they did which was helpful was purchase a double stroller together, so the little ones and I could get out of the house.
Let me know if you have any questions I didn’t answer about it!
@nlc8424 Care.com is pretty popular around here, but the most popular is finding a local moms group (especially FB) where people are looking to nanny-share. I don't know if this is true everywhere but in NY, nannies are often salaried instead of hourly.
Also, just in case anyone wonders about the reasons shoulders are the way they are on onesies, it's so you can flip the shoulder wider to pull it down their body and not get any mess on their face/hair. You know, for those times when they inevitably have poop run up their back or cover themselves in spit up.
Ok...couple of things...I am a pee wiper. I just can't not wipe the pee off....maybe an ocd thing....or....I don't know but I definitely wipe pee off.
I was so mad when I found out that secret (secret to me anyway) about onesies!! That eould have saved me a couple of heartaches with DD lol
Last, has anyone gotten their bill for NIPT? I am freaking out a little because I got mine through progenity and it is called Innatal but I have no indications...they only did that one because they said it is becoming the new standard. So...I am stressing that if my insurance doesn't cover if I will get a bill for thousands of dollars?!?! Anyone had this?
Our nanny actually sought us out (she is my mom’s housekeeper) and she has been amazing. We did interview another one which we found on Nextdoor. I’m in a large Facebook group with mommies from my city (like thousands of them) and I see nanny posts there daily as well.
We asked her what she was looking for hourly (she was too nice to give us an answer), offered her what we could afford and thought was fair, and I gave her a raise after a 2 month trial run and then again after a year of working for us. She’ll get another raise (bigger bump) for baby #2.
When interviewing I printed out a long lists of questions and we went through the important ones. She got vaccinated for us (flu shot and tdap were our musts), we paid for her cpr certification, and we plan our vacations well in advance and she tries to plan hers at the same time. We pay her for any scheduled days we’re away (which is usually 1-2 weeks a year on her normal working days) and she gets the same holidays off (paid) that I do at work.
The most important thing with having a nanny is you have to be 100% comfortable with them. Ours has not one red flag for us and her 3 kids are the sweetest, most even mannered kids ever. If she can raise her kids like that, I know she’ll do just fine helping raise mine. (Also my kid gets really excited when she walks in the door each morning so I know she’s having fun!)
@SkilledSailor thanks for the info, I appreciate it. Like I said I don't think it's something we could afford, but I've been curious about it.
@adirat I'm in upstate NY and there's just not a whole heck of a lot of nanny/nanny shares available on care.com from when I've looked. Also, there's like 2 mom groups around me that are 30 minutes away, still something to look into but one of the downsides to being a bit more rural. And yeah the whole salary thing is what makes me think it's not doable for us. I know how valuable taking care of my child is, I don't know I can afford someone to watch just my kids if that makes sense. Thanks for your input as well.
@nlc8424 If you do find someone to do the nanny share with, it might still be worth looking into. Each family paid a little less than they would have paid for a spot in an infant room, but got to have their child in their own home half the time.
I nanny one day a week (I know it's weird, but it totally works for everyone) and we hooked up on a local moms only Facebook Group.

@Asunshinek that is the one my doctors office does too. They gave me another pamphlet on financials and said if I get a bill for thousands of dollars to call the number on back and tell them I can’t afford it. The most they would make me pay is $99. If you get some crazy bill reach out to me and I will dig through my paperwork and find that financial number for you.
@nlc8424 I hope there's something you can find. Like @skilledsailor said nanny shares can certainly be cheaper than day care, but it's definitely more legwork than simply calling a day care center. Good luck.
@adirat I'm actually all set with my home day care provider for both DS and this baby once I go back to work. I more so wanted to put the question out there for some food for thought for myself but also for any FTMs who are considering this option when they go back to work/if they're currently exploring their daycare options.
@klj0228 thank you so much!!! They gave me a pamphlet about the test with an 855 number on the back for the company but I just didn't want to stroke out over something without knowing more info from others like you just said. That makes me feel a ton better!
Well @stothi, the grip I had on my focus today was tenuous at best, so thank you - I just spent like fifteen minutes googling how ancient people wiped their butts.

I've got another childcare question: how soon do we need to start looking at daycare spots? The soonest this baby would be in daycare is probably Jan/Feb19, I'm wondering how early we might need to reserve a spot.
@maine_squeeze depending on where you live I'd recommend starting now. Some of the ladies here are finding there could be a one year waiting list potentially, so I'd start now to secure a spot.
I've got another childcare question: how soon do we need to start looking at daycare spots? The soonest this baby would be in daycare is probably Jan/Feb19, I'm wondering how early we might need to reserve a spot.
It’s location and sometimes even neighborhood dependent. Also depends on home daycare vs center. With DD it was probably a 13-14 month wait (DD got her spot when she was 5 months old), this time we’ll have a spot December/Jan. My sisters area ten minutes down the rd is 1.5 to 2 yrs wait. All centers. Call around and ask if places have wait lists. Often too, existing families have first dibs so spot fluctuate.
@maine_squeeze Another factor is how important the various accreditations are to you. Top daycares in this area seem to book 6+ months out, some even further. But the more lax you get on the various accreditations the easier it gets. I'd still start looking soon, just to secure a spot in your favorite preschool. We're thinking LO will start sometime in March and will start touring places in May.

This will depend on your area. I was able to get my 1 year old a spot this past January by registering in October. Yet I'm in another mom group where someone recently told us spots are booked out a year and a half in advance. So in her area people are reserving spots months before their future child is even conceived.

So, I’ve started taking magnesium to help prevent headaches, and my energy has plummeted... I’d be content to never get off the couch, which is def not my norm. I’m just crossing into 2nd tri and was doing better until this week. I’m not sure if he two are related or its just me. Figured I’d see if anyone has had similar experience?

@Wishilivedinflorida. Oohh that’s why things are moving better now! Well that’s a perk for me. But seriously the last 3 days I have been bordering on lethargic, and while dd is interuppting my sleep a couple times a night it isnt over the top and we nap, so why I suddenly can’t find the energy to shower is beyond me! And getting very old very fast.

@jhjocelyn Magnesium helps get things moving for sure! And it is a natural remedy for insomnia! I have a girlfriend who sits in a bath with powdered magnesium every night to help with sleep. That could be a reason why you are feeling drowsy. Maybe check with your doc just to be safe. I wonder if half the dose would still help with headaches?
I know we have talked about this before, but how would everyone feel about an unmedicated birth thread? I would also like to see a post partum thread.
Would participate in both.
I wanted to go unmedicated with DS but ended up getting an epi thanks to back labor and no breaks between contractions but I am going to give it another shot with this one.
