IVF with donor eggs

Re: IVF with donor eggs

  • @cmiller- I didn't go through an agency but went through an inhouse program at my clinic. Would it be an option for you to go to a clinic with an inhouse program? Its still more expensive than frozen, but cheaper than an agency. At my clinic, it was $14500 for donor/clinic fee, $12500 for a full IVF/transfer cycle and then meds (so maybe another $3-5k depending on how much the donor needs). So for double the cost of frozen, you get all the eggs. Our donor coordinator didn't really give us advice on selecting the donor. Its really a personal decision. Personally I would go with proven if one of your top 3 is proven. And the more proven the better. A first time donor can work out great, it has for some ladies on here. But its also alot more risk. I was my donor's fourth cycle (and best cycle) since they have so much more info on how to stim them the best to get the most mature eggs. Given the failed first transfer of 2 perfect blasts for me, I am now SO glad I ended up with a proven fresh donor that gave me 12 embryos. I am worried I may end up needing all of those to complete my family of 2-3 kids as we work through receptivity issues and who knows what other undiscovered issues.

  • @cmiller73 I used an agency for our donor and we didn't have a ton of interaction - there was definitely no 'counselling' to how I should pick a donor but I really think that process is different for everyone.  We were provided with a detailed questionnaire for the several donors we were considering and photos.  Three professional photos were on the agency data base and I received a couple more photos (including one childhood photo) when I requested.

Experienced vs first time donor is also a personal decision.  We went with a first time donor because there were other things that were a higher priority.  Basically, she was my choice and she happened to be a first time donor.

I'm happy to answer any questions about our process.  I know it can be very stressful.

  • @cmiller73 I don’t have a lot of input but I didn’t want you to think I skipped over your post! We used an in-house donor and she was a first time donor! Her eggs were already banked and frozen and we got 6 per cycle we paid for! We were going into with as much of an open mind as we could and when we saw her it just clicked and we felt very confident! I would have liked to have more eggs to work with but we are thankful she was available! Hoping we can have her donate again if need be!

@JamieH2000 I was really hoping he’d offer your suggestion of a natural cycle but unfortunately we ran into bigger issues! That sounds so much more pleasant than this protocol!

@chitown18  I so hope you had better luck than I did on Monday! I know it’s awful having things so up in the air! Sending all the best thoughts and prayers your way!

AFM, had my consultation with RE this morning and he asked to do another u/s to check on something he was concerned with. Turns out, the fluid seems to be coming from my left tube that appeared to be filled with fluid during today’s scan. Both tubes are open according to latest HSG and he never used and actual term, only that the fluid was leaking from the tube and would cause problems with any transfer in the future. That being said, we are in the process of scheduling me to have a clamp put on it within the next week or so. I have such mixed emotions about this but also thankful they have found the source of the issue. I start oral progesterone tonight for 10 days and will start yet another cycle once AF shows after stopping the medicine! Also.. more Lupron! Slightly discouraged and disappointed but I know I have to stay positive and keep moving forward!
  • @rachelh0912- that is so frustrating! I know when they found polyps and I had to have them removed i was so bummed, but also glad we found that before we transfered and wasted any embryos. I am however surprised that he s going to do a lupron protocol again. CLearly it doesn't work enough to suppress your ovaries...I would push harder for a natural/stim FET. Maybe they don't like them since they can't schedule them like they do with medicated FETs, but I think doing another lurpon protocol is setting you up for more delays given your past few months.

  • @cmiller73 We went with an in-house donor who had previously had one successful prior donor cycle.  For us, it was the option between frozen eggs and going through an independent agency.  I think picking a donor is a really individual decision and is truly different for everyone.  Physical similarity, education and varied responses to personal questions were how I found a donor which I felt comfortable with.  Choosing a proven donor is "safer" but at the same time, personal fit was more important to me.  I agree with @rachelh0912...when I saw my donor's profile, it clicked with me.
@rachelh0912 It sucks that you have a delay and a procedure to undergo, but if that fluid from the tube is truly the issue that keeps causing fluid, it would be AWESOME to get that under control so you can move on to transfer.  I am frustrated for you that you keep getting delayed but HOPEFUL that this just may be the solution to lead you to a successful transfer.

  • rachelh0912 - I'm so sorry you're having to deal with another roadblock. I second what all the other girls said re: if there is a problem it's good your RE has identified it and you can address it now rather than later. But dang, I know the feeling of these delays and it sucks.  Did you talk to your RE about the issue with Lupron not suppressing enough?

AFM, started estrogen yesterday and planning for April 4th transfer if lining cooperates. Turns out my husband is leaving that morning to go to a conference (we didn't plan this well at all).  Depending on the transfer time (if he's already left for the airport) I may have to uber it to and from my transfer (?!) Oh well, I'll just be glad to finally get to that point if it ever comes.

Do you guys always take a muscle relaxer before transfers?  I never did in the past but this new RE has her patients do it.  I likely will have to go to work afterwards so I'm not sure if that will make me dopey or if it's just mild/to keep your uterus from cramping (?)

  • @JamieH2000 @radmom27 @laurad75 @rachelh0912 Thank you ladies so much! My nursing team for my cycles were so interactive, this just felt so different and I was worried!  I think we have narrowed it down to two (one who is currently cycling who would have availability in 3-4 months) and one experienced who is available now.

I will ask about if there is a questionnaire or additional file information they have filled out versus just the limited data on their profile. As I go through Brigham & Women's they do not have an in-house program, but recommended several agencies that they trust and have worked with before.

I really appreciate the info. It is such a blessing to have this forum :)

@rachelh0912 I am so happy they have a plan and you are able to keep pushing on. I know it was a big stress to have that unknown out there. I'm sending positive vibes that this is IT and you can move forward without issue!!

@chitown18 congrats on a transfer date! I had to handle doing a ER with DH out of town and considering all of the transport options. Not fun to deal with the extra logistical junk on such a crazy day, but I am sure you will get it sorted!
  • @cmiller73 I don't think I knew you were in the Boston area (then again, I probably did). What agency are you planning to use?

  • Well ERA is done. Definitely not fun, but glad its over. For some reason, I just have this bad feeling its not going to come back as receptive.. though I can't imagine how. At 114 hours of progesterone, their guess was 24 hours post receptive. Instead of 90 hours (less than 4 days) we did 96 hours. So I just don't think it can be post-receptive again since that is sooo little progesterone time. IF it comes back pre-receptive 12 hours, that puts us at 108 hours, which isn't that different than 114 hours. Aww thanks for listening. I am just stressed and want SOMETHING to go easily for once.

@radmom27 - I'm so excited for you!  Can't wait for another update :)

cmiller73 - I was just browsing and getting overwhelmed/having trouble finding a donor, so I told the agency what I was looking for and they sent me some profiles. That really helped, and the one we chose was in that group that they sent to me. Maybe you could go that route, ask the agencies to send some that they think would be good based on your criteria?   I think they know that some people just want to browse on their own, but if you let them know you want more attention/assistance they will usually step it up.

AFM, had a check today and my lining is looking really good so far.  Fingers crossed everything stays on track this time!

  • Just got my ERA results , so the first ERA test I did a year ago and it came back pre receptive after 5 days of progesterone . Then we put embryo in after 6 days of progesterone and then I got pregnant but then had miscarriage . Now I did ERA after 6 days and it came back as only off by 12 hours ! So now I just need an extra 12 hours and I’ll be good ! Phew . Now just need to find a donor.
  • @knottie7777- congrats, that is great to have a pretty definitive answer on when to transfer!!

  • radmom27 - Congrats!  Barring any delay (which as we all know can always happen!), transfer should be April 4th. For my own info, did you do anything different this cycle or is there really just a lot of luck involved in this?  I can't remember if you tweaked anything from your first attempt or not.

knottie7777 - LOL about stalking the donor sites.  Story of my life for a few solid weeks (months?)
  • Thank you to all of you for your never-ending support and for putting up with my "crazy" for what has seemed like forever!
@JamieH2000 I know I have to go for another ultrasound when I'm 10 weeks along but I think my OB will want me to see an MFM so I'm hoping I continue to be monitored closely for at least the next couple of weeks.
@chitown18 April 4th sounds like a great day for a transfer :)  I think a lot of this is really luck but I did change a couple of things.  I stayed on my steroid for a couple more days, started eating more organic and gave up any non-organic beauty products.  I also have a pretty stressful job so instead of jumping back into my normal schedule the day after transfer, I took a week of vacation afterwards.  Other than that, my protocol was the same.

  • So this whole process is interesting , found a donor who looks very similar to me , but personality wise she didn’t really answer any of the questionnaire in depth so I’m not getting a sense of what shes like . I think I’d actually feel better if I found someone whose personality I click with even if she doesn’t look just like me . I guess looks aren’t everything with this process. Any advice from anyone on your experience ?

Sorry for blank post above, my phone duplicated and apparently doesn't let you delete anything after you post, good to know haha.
  • knottie7777 - Yeah, it's tough deciding how to weigh certain factors.  At first I was being too picky so I switched gears and tried to separate what things were influenced by nature vs. nurture.  So I picked someone who had my basic attributes (tallish, dark hair, lighter eyes), but she by no means looks just like me. I tried to pick someone who seemed decently intelligent and athletic, had a good family health history, and who had prior successful cycles (although some of the girls on here had great luck with first-time donors, too). But as far as their answers to the questions like their favorite color, music, activities, what their priorities are, their best personality traits, etc. to me that seemed like something driven by nurture more than nature so I didn't focus so much on it. I guess I looked more at the objective information about them rather than the subjective answers they gave if that makes sense, and just assume (hope?) that if the child is raised by me and my husband that s/he will end up with a good personality (haha).

I did read one woman on a different board once say that in looking for a donor she was looking not for someone just like her personality-wise (since that's hard to find) but rather just someone she could see herself being friends with. I thought that also seemed like a good approach.

However, if you found a donor who looks a lot like you and you just wish you had more information about her personality, call the agency and see what they can tell you about her since they've likely met her and communicated with her a bit.  Or who knows, if you tell them you're interested but wish she had more info in her questionaire, maybe she'd be willing to add to it.
  • AFM, I'm clear for a transfer next Wednesday! Started PIO yesterday.  Also taking Medrol, which appears to be a steroid. Haven't ever taken that before.  Have any of you girls ever taken that in the days leading up to a transfer?
  • Lurking....

@chitown18 good luck next week! As for Medrol, I’ve had it before every transfer so far. It helps with implantation.
