a thread for all things formula feeding/combo feeding and supplementation related.

This is a judgement free, support thread.

Any questions and concerns are welcome

Re: Formula Feeding Support Thread

  • No questions, just wanted to praise the used baby brezza formula pro I bought at the beginning of my pregnancy.
This isn’t my first rodeo, and I’ve mixed hundreds of bottles before, but there is nothing like having a perfectly mixed warm bottle at the push of a button in the middle of the night.

I bought mine used for cheap, but I can now say I would have bought it full price... and I’m a money miser.

I also use the costco formula ($17 for 40oz!) but it is notoriously foamy. The machine takes the foam out. Almost takes the sting out of once again not being able to breastfeed. Almost

  • Did anyone start using powdered formula before the recommended 8 weeks?
  • @Gingermom15 I did with my son. We were just careful about keeping everything sterile and he had no issues.
  • @Cowboycorgi I may look into that now! I kept thinking it was cool but frivolous but maybe I need frivolous at this point. I keep thinking about how much easier it would make my life.

  • @megpeg for something you'll be using on a daily basis, I'm sure it will be worth it.
  • @megpeg personally I have no issue with paying for convenience. Some things like that make parenthood much easier and so worth it. If you can afford a Brezza, then get a Brezza!
  • @Gingermom15 I have never heard this 8 week thing before... I'm currently supplementing with powdered preemie formula and also fortifying breastmilk with powdered preemie formula, and my twins stared out with 100% formula when in the NICU. The nurses there instructed us to use the preemie formula powder to continue supplementing when we went home, when they were about a week old. We are transitioning to more breastmilk now, but still supplementing with the powder and have not had any issues.
  • @vflux33 the only reason I’ve heard of waiting to use powdered vs premixed is there’s apparently a risk of contamination and that’s bad for newborns. I never had an issue with it when I FF my son though.
  • @BrittnieMariee Oh, I see. Yeah, we are being pretty careful with it.
  • I’ve heard of using the liquid because it’s sterile and reduces the risk of infection due to their immature bowel. But I also wonder if that is the formula companies way of covering themselves if a parent prepares formula wrong and the baby gets sick?
I was thinking as long as we sterilize properly and use boiled water it should be fine. Our son didn’t start using powder until 11 months and RTF gets expensive quickly
  • We never used liquid formula before this one. DS and DD both used powder from the start. I guess maybe that’s the difference 9 and 5 years make? We never had any issues.
I feel so much more confident with baby this time and DH feels more connected being able to feed him. I am not anxious everytime he feeds that he’s getting enough and am not worried about him losing weight. Fed is fed and the hospital staff has been great with it. I don’t know if I will even bother pumping like I have done in the past because my milk never comes in.

  • Not FF, but we did with our first and I never knew about using premade vs powder..  :| Oops...

like I said, I’m thinking it’s more of a CYA on the formula companies parts. We’re switching to powder when the RTF runs out, I’m sure she will be fine
  • @megpeg we started off nursing but I have to take Atarax because of pupps and we think it caused me to stop producing. I stopped making colostrum a few hours after taking the first dose and no sign of my milk coming in. I can’t stop taking it though because the rash flares horribly when I do.
Poor baby nursed for almost 4 hours straight, only stopping when she wore herself out and would wake a few minutes later clearly starving. The LC gave me a hard time for giving formula and my nurse was awesome about advocating for us and made her leave. The staff was encouraging us switching, but the LC was pretty much a twat
  • Still using RTF here, but Nora had her one month check-up yesterday and the doctor said there was no reason not to switch to powder, for what it's worth.

I don't know if this sounds like a bad question to ask, but when it comes to boiling the water to use in bottles... how necessary is it really?  Obviously I'm going to do whatever I have to to make sure my daughter's safe, but that sounds like a lot of noise!
  • @ashtuesday if you’re using tap and your water is for sure safe, boiling probably isn’t completely necessary. Honestly, I’ve been using bottled water for the last couple bottles since switching to powder. Much less work lol
  • When do you know if your baby needs a sensitive formula? The last three bottles have been powdered formula and she is having a harder time burping and with gas. We went from similac advance rtf to similac advance powder. It’s not foamy when we give it to her
  • @Gingermom15 DS was doing the similar rtf and is really gassy and super stinky. Both of my other kids did gentlease and did great so we went and got that In the rtf to try. We all still have lactose issues so DS probably does too.

I just ordered the baby brezza and can’t wait until it gets here.

  • Nora is a month old, 7 pounds, and eats 3.5-4 oz at a time. She eats until she's full, but still wants to eat about every two and a half hours. Whoever said formula fed babies eat less frequently is sitting on a throne of lies!

I was just thinking this!  :D
this baby eats as often as her breastfed brother did. Sometimes more often and she takes 3-4 oz per feed most times, every 2-3 hours.
  • Baby brezza had the formula pro for $55 off if you preorder it with code bottleprep55. And it ship free. That would take the price down to $125.

  • I wanted to add that the Baby Brezza is worth every penny! Makes feeding so much easier.

My son appears to get really baby gas about an hour/hour and a half after feeding. He’s 6 weeks old and currently on similac Pro sensitive. We added gas drops to every feeding and it’s help a little but he still appears to be in pain. He cries for about a half hour and once he passes the gas he seems better. Has anyone else had this type of issues? What did you do?
  • @bexster05 my kiddo is a gas bag, lol. We walk with her on our shoulder or try bicycling her legs or rub her belly in a circular pattern. Also I’ve tried gripe water. I feel bad and tell her she just has to let her body do it’s work. We’re going to stick to the powdered similac and avent bottles (I was switching between the premade and those nipples and the powdered in the avent bottles) to see if that helps. I think the different density may have been too much on her system. I feel for you though when she’s crying and nothing you do is making it better. Good luck!
  • Similac made DS really gassy. I've switched to Gerber (for supplementing what I pump) and he's doing much better. We used Gerber when DD was a newborn too and didn't have any gas issues. DD did well on Similac when she was 10-12 months.

  • My dr. Had me go on bc but I think I had a cycle at like 8 weeks and now it’ll be regular because of the pill. So that’s not much of a good answer to help you. Our hormones are still influx so that may be making the cycle longer?
