Should I still register at Babies R Us?

Hey all ! Given the news that Toys R Us Inc may be closing its stores (and likely Babies R Us included), is it out of the question to make a registry with Babies R Us? I am due July 2018 and we have a Babies R Us very close to our home so it would be the most convenient place to register, we are just wondering if realistically it's a good idea? Thanks!

  • I was looking into this yesterday. Babies R Us will be closing US operations as well as TRU if it does happen. It's not worth the risk IMO. I was going to use them for the completion bonus at the end, but it's a possibility they won't even be around....

If anyone has any solid info, I would like to hear it. I keep hearing they are closing all stores, does that mean online operations will remain open? I was trying to figure it out last night but never saw an answer.

If you do I wouldn’t ONLY register to BRU. If you’re going to register there, I would at least keep a back up registry somewhere else like Target, or even something online. It sounds more and more like they’re closing all the stores, I even read they may be declaring bankruptcy too?
Also you should change your username so you can be tagged. You just have to go to the knot and change it on their website, there’s more detailed instructions on the main page if you search “PSA knottie.”
  • Be safe and go elsewhere. I work retail management (thankfully with a secure company) but i know peers in other companies that have had to shut doors anywhere from a week to 90 days after closing announcement made public.
  • I heard they are suppose to make decision soon (this week i think). I’m just looking for sales to get what i need if it’s a good deal. I only made registries in Target and buy buy baby.
  • @And846 my husband’s company (restaurant business) closes their stores ON the day they announce. Not even staff gets a heads up! Crazy
  • @acunamatada that's standard? Crazy. It just happened to one of our local chain restaurants. Why do they do that?

  • @flockofmoosen3 they’re reasoning is that staff won’t show up to work or won’t work as hard if they know they’re closing. Makes sense knowing the some of the people that work for them, but as a whole I think it’s pretty messed up.

I get it but that's really horrible for employees. These people have families and kids and maybe pregnant wives to support. I think my own recent experience is coloring my reaction to that.

    I wouldn't register at babies r us.
also people will buy you gift cards from the store you register at and those gift cards will be worthless if they end up closing.
  • I’m already registered and it’s on my shower invitations. Luckily I’m already also registered at Amazon, so I may just pare down the BRU list a lot (I have most of these big things on both). There were a couple things on BRU that I couldn’t find on Amazon (like the fox humidifier), but if nothing else, a plain humidifier will work.
  • If I were having a shower, I would definitely switch... you don't want to get screwed on completion discounts or gift cards
  • I was was joking, clearly, about not knowing BRU. The one by me is closing, too. :( Do you also have a BuyBuy Baby? They have lots of good stuff, and according to their recent flyer/coupon I got in the mail, they are NOT closing, lol! I would also make sure to move important items from any BRU registry and into a different one. In the meantime, you could possibly score some good deals if you can make it to their liquidation sales at just the right time. Good luck!

I get that POV, but it's greedy of the owners to get the last few days' worth of $$ before blindsiding their employees with sudden unemployment. I would be pissed. I guess it's not different than other companies...but I think restaurant staff may generally be in a different financial situation than someone working in an office.

  • @flockofmoosen3 @zande2016 I totally agree. Frankly DH wouldn’t be told if his store was closing until the day of either. I’m not defending them at all, I get why they do it in theory, but it is a last ditch money grab.
  • Maybe not, but I will say the one by me is closing and I bought myself a glider/ottoman combo this weekend because it was originally $300 and I got it for $84!!!!!  So be sure to check it out for yourself for deals!  I traded in a booster and got the coupon, but I cannot use it in a liquidating store.  It has to be used by this weekend, so I'll probably use it online.  This is my third, and even though I have nothing (unexpected and already got rid of all of my stuff) I'm not expecting a shower, so I registered a few places just for the coupons/completion discounts.

  • I originally registered on amazon and absolutely love it.  I would highly recommend.
  • My sister works at babies r us. She is telling everyone who asks this same question to wait until Thursday before starting a registry with them. Supposedly that's when they get an answer of what's going on. Even employees don't know what is happening yet. It may be possible they close all brick and mortar syores but maybe keep an online presence but it's all unknown and she said it's not worth going through all the trouble of picking out your items if they go belly up.

She did mention they are having some serious clothing sales now with brand names like Carter ringing up for only $2. She also said the store is a crazy madhouse because of people trying to use up their store credits and gift cards before it's too late.
  • @babybakie I thought they announced yesterday it really is all US stores?
We have 50% closing signs going up all around us - I would highly recommend if you can swing it financially to grab big items now while they are 50% off and completely agree with the idea of FTM registering somewhere else to ensure you don't get screwed on completion bonuses.  Good stuff will go quick and I'm hearing stores that have already announced they are closing will be gone potentially within a week.  We'll be heading out tomorrow after the snow to TRU and BRU to stock up - was getting DD a bike/tricycle for her birthday so we'll just get that now and put in the basement for 3 months and stock up on bedding, new mattress, and other things we need for new baby.  Then again we're not expecting a shower since this is a second kid so we don't have to play the same guessing games. Good luck, ladies!

  • I went by my TRU/BRU yesterday and nothing was marked down yet.
  • @gingerbride26 they announced it officially that all stores were closing? Wow.  I saw my sister after her shift yesterday at 11pm but her store didn't even hear that yet, though they are all suspecting that that will be the outcome. She said the coorporate meeting is Thursday. I must say, as a company, they do not treat their employees well at all.

She advised me not to buy furniture from them if they are closing,  though I thought that sounded like a great way to save a lot. She said if the items ship damaged, I would have no recourse. She said she sees it happen often, yet I still feel tempted to take the chance anyway.
  • @babybakie that's good advice. I was thinking of buying some cheap furniture but I didn't even think of that. I guess I will see what they have in stock.
  • Wait so is it only the stores that have already announced they're closing that have discounts? Or all stores now? The only one by me that's closing is far away so I don't want to waste the trip if a store closer to me would have markdowns.
  • @zande2016 the stores that already announced closing, I'm sure have sales. My sister is in a store that has not yet confirmed closing and she said they currently have great clothing deals. I need to check it out.
She told me of a customer who was due in August who was buying stuff up, trying to project future sizes of her baby for particular seasons. She said she bought a $60 snowsuit for $6. And I definitely agree with those here who advise not to open a registry with them.

@moguippy that was the advise my sister gave but i have to admit, it still feels very tempting to get furniture! She definitely thinks I should stay clear of nonstick items.
  • @babybakie I will admit I'm VERY confused on the status - I keep reading conflicting news stories on what is fact and what is speculation still.  There is zero actual information on the TRU and BRU websites still of sales or official locations that are closing - so we've been having to do a driveby to see if the 50% off signs are up or not at specific stores.  I can see what your sister is saying about the furniture, our crib manual said to go to the manufacturer for defective parts and not the store though - so that's what we did and in that one case it worked well. Probably depends on what you're buying and would be the same as any other going out of business sale.

  • @gingerbride26 I was going to say that- I bought my furniture on amazon but BRU has some of the same brands, and they all said to report defects to the manufacturer not the store, which I did have to do with my glider that shipped damaged.
  • we bought my daughters toddler bed from their closing sales and it had some but minimal damage. we can cover the dents and scratches but would be cautious in buying big things from them i couldnt directly inspect after that

  • They went to court Monday and are drafting a liquidation agreement.  They head back to court either tomorrow or Thursday.  They will have a decision by friday but it looks highly likely that they will begin to liquidate and close all US stores however not officially confirmed yet.
  • hey all - i was just poking around on the website and on the store finder areas they've updated the names of the already announced closures to "- CLOSING" which makes it easier to pick a store to hit up for sales!

  • *me frantically checking every day for closures* nope nothing in CO yet :disappointed:
  • So Annoyed. They are closing so many stores near me, but they keep moving the inventory of what I want from the liquidation stores to the stores that aren't closing yet. I will get you my pretty!!!
  • @wildtot - fingers crossed - we lucked out and there's a TRU and BRU next to each other both closing 30 min away, so we're driving down after work to stock up for DD and new baby

They just reported that all TRU stores in the UK will be closing in 6 weeks.
  • Gonna check now for CA and Texas since I'll be in San Antonio at the end of the month!
  • @zombiehoohaa Westminster and Brea are closing. Nothing closing in San Antonio,TX yet
  • @kissableviv Guess I'm heading to those first! Thanks for the heads up! The one at the Tustin Market Place is still marked as open...shocking.

  • It looks like they’re officially closing all US stores. Haven’t seen any estimated closing dates for the stores that aren’t already in the process of closing.
  • @zombiehoohaa that's the one I went to once and it's so bad lol
  • @kissableviv It is! That's why I'm so surprised it wasn't on the original list of closures. Now that it's official though, I'll be watching out. I work right by it. So it will be easy to go to.
