I’m planning to hire one both because of that and I feel like I need an experienced partner to go through this with. I love my support person, but he is a kid in a candy store about this.
I went through the whole Bradley course where it's partner supported birthing. I got to the end of the course and was like "yeah, good thing we went through this. I'm hiring a doula!!" The course was great and all and I recommend it to FTM's but as soon as I learned I was knocked up with DS2 I called to book my doula! This time I'm delivering with a different (still awesome) doctor at a different hospital so I need to find a different doula.
@KFrob I just had my first dating ultrasound and doc appt. I go Back next week at 10w, to do blood work, then I go Back again at 13w for another scan and then it’s once a month which I think I did the first time around
@KFrob- I think it depends on the doctor. My appointments are currently scheduled out the same as they normally would for a younger woman. That may change when I go in at 12 weeks, since it was the nurse who told me to schedule them that way, but we’ll see.
My only bonus is a genetics consultation in two weeks as older moms are at increased risk for having Down’s babies.
I have a question. Does AMA mean more frequent appointments? It seems like I've had an appointment every two weeks this time around.
I asked the PA today at my ultrasound appointment what the difference is, and they just recommend more tests - genetic screenings, blood draws, etc. I did all that stuff last time anyway, so at least for me, it’ll be the exact same. As far as appointments, I had this one at 7 weeks, another at 11, and then once a month until the last month I think, where it will be once a week.
The only difference for me was a dating ultrasound this time, and a first trimester blood draw (i had neither of those last time) I also would have met with a genetic counselor, however i met with one last time (bc of genetic issues on my side) so we figured it wasn't necessary again because nothing has changed. I was told there would be more testing in second trimester, and more NSTs towards the end because of my age.
*TW* maybe its bc my last pregnancy ended in a loss? *end TW* I had an u/s at almost 6w6d, then one at 8w4d, then they have me doing another one my next appointment which will be 10w4d. I didn't even realize the next one had an u/s scheduled until I got my confirmation text from the office. I guess I'll hit my deductible fast!
My doctor's practice is comprised mostly of midwives and two doctors; they take a balanced approach to delivery. So far, they are not treating me any differently due to my AMA. I do have a clotting disorder and low progesterone which rewuired more bloodwork. This practice has plenty of AMA mamas, and they have done a good job of easing my mind by making me feel like I'm not alone.
*TW* After reading the losses threads I can't help but feel anxiety!! I'm more than two weeks out from our first prenatal exam and I just want to run to the nearest urgent care and check in on the little one. I wouldn't do it because I hate to waste resources like that but the worry becomes overburdening.
@tropical1982 - i know the feeling *hugs*. I know it's of little comfort, but the losses, as heartbreaking as they are, are a very small percentage of what will mostly be healthy boring pregnancies.
3. Best thing: feeling in a good place to start a family. I have my career figured out, my marriage is solid and I am in a good place as an individual.
4. Worst thing: the fear that something may go wrong due to age (I’d probably feel like this regardless because of all the fertility issues we have gone thru). Also, I feel like I have less energy than I may have when I was younger.
looking forward to going thru this journey with you ladies!!
Re: February AMA mamas
1. Age Now / Age at Delivery
40/maybe 41. Twins (for now) with a due date about a month after my bday, so it's hard to predict.
2. FTM / STM+? If STM+, is this your first AMA?
STM. Had my first at 37.
3. Best thing about being AMA?
Much more settled in my life than I was when I was younger. Stable, good job, strong marriage, etc.
4. Worst thing about being AMA?
I think it's harder on the body when you're old.
5. Bonus: Which TV mom embodies your #momgoals?
Edited: Maybe Meredith Grey?

After much more of the same...
