Valentine's Day!

It's been kinda quiet here today - let's talk Valentine's Day. Do you love it, hate it, do the same thing every year or nothing at all? Do you have a favourite food, candy, movie, gift to give/receive, are you doing anything for your SO/kids? Any V-day (or anti-V-day) traditions? Drop it all here!

Re: Valentine's Day!

  • My main tradition since dating DH: I love to watch the movie 500 days of summer on Valentine's Day. Although it's technically about a breakup I find it such a great movie and that there is something romantic about it. So we may do that (we don't do it every year lately). In general, my idea of fun would not be to go out to a fancy restaurant on V-day - I feel like it would be so overpriced and just a ton of couples all trying to do the expected V-day thing. Last year we went to a burger joint. This year we are staying in - I mentioned it elsewhere but we are doing a date box (my surprise for DH) - and going out on Friday but not sure where yet. I already bought myself a new diaper bag which is my gift. I want to make heart-shaped pancakes for the kids tomorrow morning but may end up being too lazy lol. I love conversation hearts (hence my siggy).

  • We don't really do anything more than exchanging cards and candy. We do the same for DS now, and my mom sent us a box with cards and probably some more candy lol. We used to go out to dinner around V-Day but not usually on the day just because it was so pricey and annoyingly crowded for a Hallmark holiday. We'll probably just order a pizza tomorrow, honestly.

  • I got DH a card and might do pancakes tomorrow. We don’t really have any traditions. I got the idea to make Rice Krispie treats, add red food coloring and sprinkles, and cut them out with my heart cookie cutters. So, we might do that for dessert tomorrow. I’d love a date night soon to a steak house, honestly! lol.
  • I think it's pretty dumb honestly. I don't like flowers because IMO they are a waste of money. (We didn't even really do flowers at our wedding, lol.) I did get DH a card and I wrote some mushy crap in it. I also got him a little thing of chocolate because I walked past it in the grocery store. I'm SoOoOo romantic. Lol. We will probably just get take out and do it.
  • We don’t do anything, I did buy DH a card and will probably bring home a cake from work but that’s the extent. I will be a bit disappointed if I don’t have flowers from him though. We are lucky and get to do date night every Friday because my mom and dad watch DD for the night every week.

  • My mom is visiting and she's the only person I allow to watch DS, so we're going on a date Saturday.  Maybe the movies, since we haven't been since before he was born.  We don't have a tradition or anything.

  • We don’t do anything. Usually one of us is busy, and TBH we both kind of forget about it. This year two of our Cub scouts are coming over so they can finish their Pinewood Derby cars. I sometimes try to plan & make a nice dinner, but that’s not happening this year as I can barely cook right now.
  • @livinthesunnylife movie date nights are my favorite! We've only been twice since DD was born but I definitely jump at the chance to go. Are any good movies playing now?

We don't have anything planned. Right now, I would just be happy to have our house back to normal and watch Netflix. I did get him a mushy card but that's about it. Not feeling too romantic over here lol

    Hello from Detroit!

  • @rocknrollmom Last time I was pregnant we went to the movies like every other week, we had seen everything.  It was the best way to past the time.  Literally haven't been once in 15m.

I was thinking about that movie about the American kids that saved the train in France?  It looks action-ish enough for DH and we both like real stories.
  • @Firemanswife11 I’m not big on flowers either! They just die anyway.

I only care about chocolate. So DH got me some from sees this year. DS1 blew that surprise when he came home and told me straight away. DH was so mad lol.

Other than chocolate we don’t do much. My mom is actually coming over and we are getting Indian lol.

  • This is mine and SO's first Valentine's together so I don't really know what to expect. For Christmas I got him a new backpack so for V day I got him a wallet to match, a key chain that says "I'm so happy I swiped right" and this card. I texted him last night to see if we're doing anything tomorrow and I think we're just going to hang out and watch GoT. I'm still catching up, we're finally in season 7, but watching GoT has kinda been our thing since we started dating. He said we'll go out to dinner this weekend.

  • We don't celebrate it. I tend to shun most of the "materialistic holidays" as it is anyway. You bring Christmas crap out in September? I won't patronize your store. heh

Fortunately for my GD diagnosis, I'm not really craving candy at all. If I have a one off sweet craving, a strawberry or some apple wedges seems to fix it. I can't even get excited about the Lindt truffle ball things we have leftover from Christmas. I tried a bite of one and nope, it was gross. I'm sad that coffee and chocolate are still gross.

That said, I bought my husband a small box of handmade dark chocolate covered cherries from the local chocolate shop and a bottle of bourbon for just becausies. I finally found the baby's heartbeat on the home doppler this afternoon, and I recorded a 30 second clip of it on my phone. So I'll let that be the reason we celebrate. :)
  • DH always sends flowers to work which is nice because they brighten up my normally-sterile office for like a week, haha. When it falls on the weekend we usually go out to dinner (what can I say, we are basic :)), but with it being mid-week and me being pregnant and having a big work assignment due Thursday, we are just going to do surf and turf (ribeyes and shrimp and cauliflower mash) at home tomorrow.

I have been SO turned off of chocolate this pregnancy too - it's weird! I never had this with the boys so I am chaulking it up to the different sex this time (I am sure that's not it)... but seriously, DH got me a bunch of chocolate in my stocking for Christmas and it is still in our snack cupboard.

  • @alinafed Yep! I got a bunch of nice chocolate (all my favorite brands) from my best friend for Christmas and my birthday, which is a month after Christmas. It's all still sitting in our snack cupboard. I finally told hubby to start taking it to work with his almonds, I'm never going to eat it. :(
  • We usually don't do anything, but I super dropped the ball on DH's birthday this year and literally did nothing. So I got him a card and a nice cigar. He has been saying that he wanted a cigar to celebrate being pregnant, and the weather is supposed to be nice here this weekend. Maybe not exactly romantic for him to sit outside alone and smoke it, but it will make him happy. I am on call tomorrow evening, so we can't really plan anything otherwise!
  • We don’t do anything ever but DH is away and knows I’m having a tough time so I’m secretly hoping he sends me flowers lol
  • We aren’t doing anything. DH will probably bring me candy or something. I got him a card. I was thinking DS and I could go pick him up for lunch but the weather is supposed to be bad so I think we’ll probably go another time when we can sit outside.
  • We don't do anything big for Valentine's. I got DH some new pocket squares that he wanted and we're going to a couple's cupcake class tonight (that was supposed to be a secret but my mom can't keep a secret).

I've had some pretty rotten Valentine's Days over the years so I'm happy to keep it simple.

  • We don't really do anything fancy.  We usually go out to eat, but not on V-day - like the week after or something. And we exchange cards. I told H the only thing i wanted were these chocolate dipped nutter-butters they have at HEB - so he's probably going to get those (I hope). I'm pretty simple :)
  • We don’t really do anything, but we did have fondue as an early Vday on Sunday. Things are just crazy the day of. Usually I get DH a Reese’s heart, but I only get him a card if I happen to see one I like. I was planning on getting DS a balloon because he just really likes balloons, but I haven’t been to the store today. Maybe I’ll get one on my way home from work tomorrow. I feel like it comes so soon after Christmas, and with the way Lent is falling this year, Fat Tuesday is today and then Easter is really early. Too many holidays happening so close together! DS just finished eating his Christmas candy (and some thay was technically leftover Halloween candy) so more candy less than two months before Easter? Nah. Good thing he doesn’t know any different yet.

  • We don't really get gifts for each other for holidays or even birthdays, but we try to do a 'date night' - usually just dinner - once a month. We'll probably get sushi this weekend at some point, but not necessarily for Valentine's Day. DH has a lot of local family, so we always have somewhere to dump DS off. He LOVES all of his cousins, so it works out.

  • We collectively suck at holidays and anniversaries. He'll probably bring me a specialty coffee drink, which I love, but rarely let myself have due to the exorbitant prices + calories, and we'll likely have sex. I'm sure we'll make a point to say "happy Valentine's Day" to each other at some point during the day. I may have to step up my game once the kid arrives.

  • Meh. We used to put more effort in but neither of us care that much anymore about it. I got him a card from me and a card from DS that I let DS scribbble all over. I think he’ll probably get me a gift card or something. Or some lame grocery store flowers but whatever, it’s the thought that counts. I’m more excited about getting take out tbh.

  • We used to go out to dinner, exchange gifts, etc. Then we had kids lol. Now we basically just give each other cards and that’s about it.
  • Ugh forgot that’s tomorrow. So I’ll be picking out a card from me and DS over my lunch break and maybe some of his fave chocolate. And I’ll get DS a balloon and maybe small stuffed animal. The middle of the week is rough for these holidays that are supposed to be so thoughtful...
  • @hfooter See’s chocolate and Indian food sounds like the perfect Valentine’s Day!
  • @ladygali I cannot wait for the chocolates! It’s been hard knowing they are in the house and not eating them!

  • We have zero plans.  We might go to dinner this weekend?  We're really not big on Valentine's day, and DH is busy, so we might remember to say happy Valentine's day.  He may surprise me with a gift, but I don't expect anything, and I didn't get anything for him.

On the other hand, DS's daycare sent home a list of all the kids in his class, which was how we learned that we're expected to give valentines to all of them.  The kids in his class are all 1 or 2, so I did not expect that. So we got some little valentines and snacks from Target, and I get to spend the tonight assembling valentines.  Also, we are supposed to bring spaghetti for a potluck.  I hope they're okay with cold spaghetti, because I don't want to figure out how to keep it warm.
  • @Secretstapler I signed up to bring paper plates to DS’s party lol. I don’t see the point in bringing a snack because they always have so much. I loathe the daycare parties hahah

i assembles transformer valentines but luckily DS wrote all the names hahah

We totally slacked and didn’t do it last year but we were on vacation and my IL’s we’re watching him so that was our excuse haha
  • @scottishlass1213 Good call!  DH does pick up, so he signed us up for spaghetti. I would have definitely gone for something simpler.
  • I’ll be doing nothing.  :s
  • @secretstapler @scottishlass1213 +1 for not a fan of day care parties lol. DS thought today was Halloween because of all the junk around.
  • @legallykate surf and turf is usually our tradition! Lobsters are the only thing DH knows how to cook so that’s usualky what he does for me on Valentine’s Day. The one time per year he cooks. But I’m really not feeling seafood this pregnancy so I asked that we just go out the three of us DS included to get a bite and not having to cook or clean will be my treat. I hope I get some flowers too.
Jealous of you ladies that get flowers st work, I think that’s so fun.
@lalala2004 balloons are my DS favorite thing too which of course scares the crap out of me
DS born 04/22/15, Pregnant again 03/01/17 however loss due to PPROM at 20+6 weeks now TTC rainbow
  • @secretstapler @scottishlass1213 +1 for not a fan of day care parties lol. DS thought today was Halloween because of all the junk around.
I also always try to get there a few minutes before the party and pilfer some of the crap off of his plate.  I mean he gets treats and stuff from time to time but he doesn't need 3 mini cupcakes, chips, etc all at once which they do at these parties.  Then we just stand around and stare at them eat.  But, gets me out of work early and I really have no excuse since his daycare is like 2 miles from work haha
