@doctormom33 how far along are you? I wouldn't recommend putting anything under your nose as the smell won't last long and frequent reapplication is not recommended. And oils shouldn't be applied to mucus membranes. However, you could get an essential oils necklace/bracelet or inhaler to put EOs on. If neither of those are available, you could put a couple of drops of a pregnancy-safe blend or single on a cotton ball and put it in a plastic baggy to sniff as needed.
As a general rule, EOs aren't recommended in the first trimester. 2nd is either 13 or 14 weeks depending on who you ask (I'm waiting until 14 weeks to use oils as my doctor says that's when the 2nd tri starts). Peppermint is safe during pregnancy.
@Firemanswife11 *nitpicking part of your comment* I think it really depends on what you are considering as the yardstick to measure Trimesters. There are different ways to measure. One is time, one is size of baby, and another is actual developmental stages. So I think 13-14 is the consensus of when Tri 1 ends. I'll see if I can find a better, more detailed explanation of that.

Yeah, that's what I was kind of trying to get at but words are hard. Lol. I just err so far on the side of caution with EOs that I'm going to wait until next week because I know at that point I will feel personally comfortable.
Sorry I stink at tagging but thanks for the responses. I'm 14 weeks tomorrow.
I'm more concerned about the smell than dryness so i don't think vasaline or lotion will work. Vicks with some lotion sounds like something I could try though. Have never used EO so would hate to go out and buy something that wouldn't work for what I needed, so it's good to know that the smell wouldn't stick around long!
@doctormom33 Do you need to actively talk to patients while doing this "job"? Or is it merely surgical in nature? If the latter, what about a swimming nose clip, or those foamy ear plugs inserted into your nostrils? Or would that be no bueno to the other surgical staff?
When I worked in the local morgue for a summer, the one undertaker I worked with had a greasy vanilla balm he passed around that worked okay to knock back the worst of the smells. Vicks tends to dry your skin out and I think long-term exposure isn't recommended.
@doctormom33 I would try one of those Vicks Nasal pens called a Vapoinhaler. Keep it in your pocket and give a quick wave/sniff in front of your nose throughout your shift or If things get really bad uncap that sucker and just place it in your mask for a particularly stinky job. You may want to give it a try before hand just to make sure it doesn't fall out of the mask but that should be a short term fix (of course not for all day use like that).
Oh man @doctormom33 I don't even want to know what it is that you do, but I sympathize. I don't even get really bad MS, but man when that little man starts my morning with a big stinky poo...blaaaa, can't even tell you how hard I've had to try not to throw up on my own kid.
What about just a nose plug or a mask or something?
I know the essentially oil discussion was in another thread, but I have a related question so moving to the questions thread.
Anyone have any ideas for something that I can put around or in my nose to help with having to perform a particularly stinky job for the next few weeks? Someone at work told me to use peppermint oil but I was hoping for other suggestions. Have been super smell sensitive lately and am really unsure of how I will do at work the next two months (my job sort of changes every few weeks, and I'm moving to a stinky job on Monday. Its confusing without giving away too much identifiable info about what I do).
I mean, obviously now I need to know what it is you’re doing?!!! So intrigued
DS born 04/22/15, Pregnant again 03/01/17 however loss due to PPROM at 20+6 weeks now TTC rainbow
Hahaha I'm sure I'm leaving you all wondering what I do, it's just that my field is very small and there is only one training program in the state, so I would very quickly become identifiable.
I will already be wearing an N95 mask for infection protection purposes while in pregnancy which can make it hard to breathe as is. Unfortunately, it does not block all smells though. Would be afraid to actually plug my nose and eliminate any of the breathing space I will already be fighting for. Luckily, patients will not be seeing me during this process, so whatever ridiculous get up that I decide on will be okay! That greasy vanilla balm sounds like a good backup idea too.
Hoping I will tolerate things fine as I have in the past, but just want to be prepared. I had been feeling so much better and then got sick twice this morning, so I don't want to underestimate how much the smells could bother me!

Oh girl. We just potty trained and DS is still having some issues going #2 in the potty, so I've had to deal with that. Somehow it smells worse now that he's not in diapers, and even just a whiff of it and I have to quickly get him cleaned up so I can run to the bathroom. Happened again yesterday

@doctormom33 late to the convo but what about a really strongly scented lip balm, like the Bonne Belle brand (Lipsmackers?) or Burt’s Bees? It would be safe and possibly a strong enough smell under your mask. Good luck. I was in an Asian grocery store today and being near the fish counter almost did me in.
