Thanks to everyone for sharing their suggestions here! I am 6 weeks and struggling with constant nausea and occasional vomiting. I'm going to try some of the suggestions here. One question I have for those with more experience: any advice on hiding your pregnancy given the MS? Twice I have had to vomit very suddenly (and both times it happened after I had been feeling okay and had eaten a snack - a fruit bar the first time, and Cheetos the second). Thankfully, I was at home both times, but I am terrified that it is going to happen while I am at work. I teach college classes, and I really don't want to have to run out in the middle of class. I need some good excuses or something!
@melly0001 my suggestion would be just to tell people if it’s a problem. That was what I had to do at work. There was no believable excuse for my frequent and immediate runs to the bathroom or sick days. I know it isn’t ideal to tell people before 12 weeks, but it was nice getting some empathy and compassion from other people.
Hey ladies I need some advice. I have been puking every morning when I brush my teeth. I tried waiting longer, eating before brushing, but nothing seems to help. Plus brushing at night is fine, don't ask me why that makes sense. Any tips? I cannot not brush, I feel gross for the rest of the day...
For prenatals I also use the gummies before bed. Although right now I have a hard time stomaching the aftertaste. For my first, it was even worse (couldn’t even tolerate the gummies). So my OB recommended taking just folic acid only. That worked well.
@tpeci I struggled w that when i was expecting dd. I moved away from the bathroom, it was mostly association for me, and the bending over to spit. So I would basically squat and keep my torso as straight as possible, or use the kitchen sink, or a trash can, anything that wasn’t the norm would be distracting enough to let me get through it. Hope you find something that works for you soon!

Is it the act of brushing itself? Or could you try using a different toothpaste? I struggled with brushing my teeth too in the morning and sometimes using no toothpaste helped. It's not ideal, but it's better than barfing. Using plain baking soda sometimes worked too. For some reason the toothpaste was just getting to me.

I’m a FTM grateful for this thread so I can ask a question. Anyone else get nauseous while driving?? I’ve never been one to get car sick; in fact, I’m that girl that can read a book on long road trips. But, for the past two weeks, I get sick five minutes into my morning commute. (I’m 7w5d today) I have off and on nausea throughout the day as well, but this driving trend just seems so bizarre to me.
If my stomach is empty I am very very ill, so I eat a mid AM snack and a mid PM snack, then something right before bed. I try to eat smaller meals because with all this extra eating, the pounds pack on quickly.
@tpeci I have seen someone else say they used children’s toothpaste which is a different flavor and that helped.
I started taking Diclegis this week. It is basically unison and B6 in prescription form. I take two pills before bed and then leave an orange on my nightstand to eat before I get up in the morning. This has really helped with the nausea and by taking it at night I am not feeling the drowsiness of it. The dr said I could take two more pills in the day if I needed, but that they would probably make me drowsy. I haven’t had to take any in the day yet.
I am worried about hiding it too. I work from home 98% of the time, but next week have to travel to two client meetings. My nausea is worse middle of the day to early evening right when I am going to be in meetings. Hoping my diclegis and some ginger ale will keep it at bay.
@tpeci I had this happening to me too! I stopped brushing my tongue and just did my teeth. Also pushing my tongue against the roof of my mouth helped stay off the gagging from even starting. Also make sure you don't totally let your jaw drop. At least for me that's like an invite to throw up.
FYI guys, the gummies don’t have iron. I’ve had to take an iron supplement both times and they give me the worst indigestion. if you test low you might want to mention that’s the kind you’re taking
Anyone dealing with post nasal drip making their MS much much worse? I'm taking diclegis and my usual antihistamine and allergy meds (doc ok) but I still have thick post nasal drip that makes me gag and throw up a couple times a day. Any suggestions?
@tpeci All good ideas, I have to keep very upright, and I don't do as great of a job especially on the back teeth in the morning. Because it's worse to puke. On the days where I can only get maybe halfway through before giving up, I make sure to do a good rinse with mouthwash. It's not ideal, but probably still better for my teeth than puking. Good luck, I hate the toothbrush gag!

@kayokosaeki I get rhinitis with pregnancy and the postnasal drip was even worse when I had a cold. I dry heaved a lot and even threw up twice. Doing a nasal rinse helped a bit.

I'm dying right now!!! I've been taking Mucinex (I didn't ask my ob, but I'm risking it) just the plain kind, not the multi symptom stuff, and Benadryl and I still can't move the goo in my throat. Ug. I've been gagging and dry heaving all day. I've been gargling with warm salt water with lemon juice to try to clean the stuff stuck in the back of my throat. It helps a little. It took me an hour and half last night to cough up enough stuff to finally be able to sleep.
@stothi Neti pot! All the way. Helps a bit, I do it right before bed, but you can do it as many times a day as you need.

@klj0228@fftm9318@pourmeamocktail thanks for the advice! I tried just brushing with water and mouth rinse this morning and I had no gagging or crazy nausea like previous days, so it was definitely the tooth paste. I will try kids ones or just a few different ones until I hopefully find something that works. I'm very crazy about my teeth brushing so I felt gross all day but it was very nice to finally have a break from vomiting and severe nausea.
@codesoncodes Thanks for pointing that out about the iron. I switched to the gummies because the others were making me sick, but I didn't realize they don't have iron (that explains how they can make them taste so good).
@ecrotty35 Thanks for the suggestion. I may end up telling my coworkers earlier, but I don't want to tell my students until I'm past the first trimester, so I'm still looking for possible excuses in case I have to leave class suddenly.
@fftm9318 It did make me super drowsy for a day or two but once my body adjusted it I wasn't any more tired than I was from normal pregnancy fatigue. It has been a lifesaver. I can't keep food down without it.
I work in a retail cafe and today the smell of popping popcorn made me get sick after lunch. My nausea has gotten worse since 7 week mark and I've thrown up a few times so I may ask for an antinausea pill next week at one of my obgyn appointments. Ginger ale alone isn't helping the nausea anymore
@adirat I have considered it, but I'm waiting until I get super desperate to take anything that makes me sleepy. DS still wakes up 1-2 times a night and DH sleeps like the dead, so the night wakeups are all on me. It makes me super nervous to take anything that might interfere with that.
@sandiekay yes! Me too! Driving, riding in the car, or especially on the bus (I commute to work) is when I feel the most nauseous. I have found that sucking on preggie pops really helps. I put one in my mouth before I feel sick and they last for 20 minutes ish - which is usually long enough. You can order them on amazon - I highly recommend! I hope you feel better soon.
I have tried it all- aside from a script, nothing works, one day pineapple helped. The next day it made me very sick- ginger ale one day the next i cant stand the thought- i am very over this constant nausea! Hang on ladies- a few more weeks and we should be in the clear!
I have a question for those that find that B6 helps. Do you find that it helps if you take it at regular intervals (e.g., 3x per day) or do you take it only at times when you feel nauseous?
@melly0001 I've been taking it with each meal. My Dr said it could take a few days to see a difference, so I would think just taking it when you're nauseous wouldn't help much. It hasn't helped me at all though, I think I'm going to need to start adding the unisom to the mix and just hope it doesn't help my sleeping out too much and I can still hear DS at night

@stothi I do think it might be related to toothpaste. I was planning on trying a new one. I've heard of baking soda too I might try
Thanks ladies!
