Why are you high-risk? My pancreas is an asshole (diabetic) and I'm old

Any additional monitoring or testing this week? Yes! NT scan is today! Plus genetic counseling and NIPT blood draw. I've got to follow up with my diabetic counselor, I haven't sent my numbers in for a while. But I've had pretty consistent readings and a few lows (40s) so I think there's just a small adjustment that we'll be making.

Rants/Raves/Questions? I'm too nervous about the NT scan today to do any work! I need more vacation days...

GTKY: What is your favorite season and why? I love Spring! I'm a sucker for a rainy day and love when I can finally leave the house without my giant winter coat.

  • @mrsbubbles-2 how exciting for the NT scan... i had my NIPT blood draw already and my dr wants to do another growth scan at 12 weeks but no NT scan .....

if you don't mind me asking, are you type 1 or type 2?   i'm type 2 trying to stay off insulin during the pregnancy

  • @harleyquinn0621 - I think I'm type 2. They never really did any test to determine one way or the other. I was actually diagnosed during my last pregnancy, my glucose tolerance test results came back at 400 and my A1C was 10! So I got an all-expenses paid (not really...) trip to the hospital that night (my blood sugars were in the high 500s by the time I got up there) and spent a night in the ICU with an insulin drip and then 2 days in the hospital getting my numbers under control. I never had a single symptom of diabetes during or before pregnancy so I was a pretty big deal with my OB practice lol! So after DS was born they re-tested me at 6 weeks PP and I failed the glucose tolerance test again so I've been classified as type 2 ever since. I'm on insulin now and was before getting pregnant (we tried metformin but it just didn't control my sugars) so I have my long-acting that I do morning and night and my fast-acting that I do before dinner.

I sure hope you can stay off the insulin! How long have you been a diabetic? I think @hoodwink89 is also diabetic so we have a little support group here!

Also, I just read your history in your siggy - how are you doing? I honestly hope this is the most boring 9 months ever for you. Is your appointment on the 19th for your cerclage?

  • @mrsbubbles-2 I was diagnosed last year when I was pregnant the first time as well... A1C was 9.5 and i was 9w so they put me on insulin until I delivered him early at 19w .. after that they let me try to maintain with diet and exercise (my A1C was 4.8 at that point) and i've managed to maintain a steady A1C of 5.3 since then... so my DR is hopeful... although i've seen some weird things with my blood sugar lately, nothing super concerning.

i'm actually doing better than i thought i would be. This pregnancy was a surprise so i'm just taking it day by day. My appointment on the 19th will be a 12w growth scan and they are going to do a general physical and a group b strep test  then i'll have the cerclage placed a couple of weeks after that

Why are you high-risk? Two placental abruptions (first at 22w6d, second at 30w4d) and a miscarriage. Unexplained bleeding before that in all 3 previous pregnancies.

Any additional monitoring or testing this week? OB appointment on Thursday, finally doing the NIPT I think. Waiting on the approval for the high risk doctor so I can book my appointment with them. My OB just wants them to monitor me through the pregnancy.

    Rants/Raves/Questions? Nope

GTKY: What is your favorite season and why? Fall/winter, because I love cold and snow and all of the holidays. It's a big reason I despise living in SoCal, because our "winter" has been about 80 degrees this year, which made it hard getting into the Christmas spirit. I grew up in Colorado so I'm used to seasons and snow days.

  • How far along are you? 11w6d-ish

Why are you high-risk? 2 previous losses, diagnosed with a septate uterus (corrected via surgery in July), and I'm old.

Any additional monitoring or testing this week? So much! Going to my first OB today, then my first high risk doc appointment is Thursday, then my cerclage is Friday.  Supposed to get my NIPT results back this week. I will probably puke from nervousness sometime this week.

Rants/Raves/Questions? Did anyone use claritest for their NIPT?

GTKY: What is your favorite season and why? Summer!! I live in like - the hottest part of the country and it's so brutal here in the summer. Everyone hates it but I love it. The more heat the better.

  • How far along are you?  14w1d. YAY 2nd TRI!!!!

Why are you high-risk? Previous losses, Pre-E with L, Short cervix with E, stupid panic-y US tec 2 weeks ago. . .

Any additional monitoring or testing this week? Nope. Next week I need to have MFM check the cerclage and all that jazz, but I should be cleared for regular OB only after that.

Rants/Raves/Questions? I hate that since I had Pre-E once and a short cervix (cerclage ripped out before 34w, and we vbac'ed at 38w) that I'm now always going to be extra checked for them. We did fine with E, short cervix and all. All the cerclage did was cause irritation that lead to PTL. It came out, no PTL until 38w when E popped out. Stupid policy.

GTKY: What is your favorite season and why?  Winter!!! Idaho has a nice mixture of freeze your nose hair off, and warm (35+ F) rainy days. Its wonderful.

@mrsbubbles-2 I thought that once you were on insulin you were classified as T1D. Maybe I missed the bus on that one, but a 6.1 A1C isn't bad. Mine is a 5.8 and my docs are all ok with it, as long as I get back on my 200mg ER Metformin again.

@hezzer78 Good Luck!!! It can be scary, but aside from the spinal it isn't bad at all. Especially if its preventative rather than emergency.

@harleyquinn0621 Hopefully diet will be enough to manage your sugars this time around. Just remember hormones are a bitch, and you can't always change or predict what they are going to do. Its not your fault no matter how it turns out.

  • @harleyquinn0621 Yup first one. I'm super nervous. I don't have a history of IC, but my RE said with my septate uterus, there's a chance I could also have an IC. So I think she doesn't want to take any chances and would rather it go in now, than an emergency situation. I saw my OB today and she seemed to have the opinion of "Oh, you're getting one of those? Really? Your cervix is not measuring short... Ok, whatever."

I guess it's fine. I may be paying for an unneeded surgery, but I guess it's better to be safe than sorry.

@princesslockness I think I'm getting general. At my pre-op, I can't remember if I asked about general or local - pretty sure I said local - and she said no. BUT - I can't remember lol.
  • edited February 2018
@hezzer78 I heard the procedure isn't a big deal... mine will be done under a  spinal and that scares the crap out of me and i'm super paranoid about a possible post surgery infection since i am also diabetic and have a history of chorio. I told my high risk dr i wanted him to send me home with antibiotics and he declined at first but then finally said ok he would.

@princesslockness oh i know.. and i'm absolutely willing to go back on insulin if necessary ... i'm just hoping i won't have to ;)

    12+3

    Why are you high-risk?
Crohn's disease, autoimmune liver disease, autoimmune arthritis, my body hating me, essentially

Any additional monitoring or testing this week?
Had NT ultrasound last Friday, and bloodwork, along with meeting perinatologist in person. Got other genetic screening back, with flyin colors. Baby measured perfect during NT as well, which was a relief. Hubby cried seeing baby move at reflex which was really special. No apts till March 2.

    Rants/Raves/Questions?
Having no immune system, during this time of year sucks. No flu yet, knock on wood, just bronchitis that wont go away!

GTKY: What is your favorite season and why?
Fall. Early fall you can still go to the beach in certain places, the leaves change colors,  and, Thanksgiving is amazing.
  • @hezzer78 Thats interesting. My OB and US tec were panicking about it. Granted they didn't actually measure my cervix, just how tall the scar tissue is. BUT it was a big deal for them.
My anesthesiologist tried to talk me out of the general for like 10 minutes. He flat refused to go general until I had a panic attack over the spinal. I'm curious to see what they do for you.

  • @princesslockness Wow - they tried to talk you out of it? I looked around the internet (dangerous, I know) and I found a lot of women have general for cerclage placement - but I think they're further along than us and I think that's for emergency ones. Apparently I found that general is fine after first tri (probably before then too, but that seemed to be the trend I found). I'm right on the cusp of 2nd tri (I'll be 12w and a few days) so it'll be interesting to see what they do. As long as I'm out of there and home in a few hours, I'll be happy either way. The spinal terrifies me but I"ll do it if I have to..
  • @hezzer78 Interesting. I was 13w5d and they were super hesitant to to general. It must be a different practice thing.

  • How far along are you? 13w 5d

Why are you high-risk? Pregnancy Induced Thrombocytopenia (both pregnancies)

Any additional monitoring or testing this week? No

Rants/Raves/Questions? Still having some nausea but not as bad, tired of nausea

GTKY: What is your favorite season and why? Fall, I love the weather and colors
  • How far along are you? 13+1

Why are you high-risk? Prior pre-term birth and myomectomy last year.

Any additional monitoring or testing this week? No, just had a follow-up with my OB last week to go over all of the MFM recommendations. My next appointment is at 16 weeks and we’ll start weekly progesterone injections.

Rants/Raves/Questions? Just a little overwhelmed with everything. I was expecting the MFM to not really do anything and say that I most likely went early because of my fibroids and since they’re off, no big deal. I knew we’d be getting extra ultrasounds, but now I’m looking at vaginal ultrasounds every other week, plus the regular monthly ultrasound and an MRI at 26 weeks to check for placenta accreta. They don’t want me going into labor because of the incisions on my uterus so we’re actually looking at July baby!

GTKY: What is your favorite season and why? I love the fall. The weather is perfect and there’s so much to do. Not to mention everything PUMPKIN!
  • Can I hang out here?

    I’m 11w3d

I had pregnancy-induced hypertension and intrauterine growth restriction with my first pregnancy. I’m also ancient (40).

I’ll be doing NIPT next week. I’m actually not really sure what extra testing I’ll need, probably frequent ultrasounds in 3rd trimester.

Questions: Anyone else taking baby aspirin? It was recommended to me, starting at 12 weeks.

GTKY: summer!!! I live in New England and I love to hike and camp. August is my favorite month - it must be a good one to have a baby in!

  • How far along you?  11 weeks

Why are you high risk? Monochorionic Monoamniotic Twins (1 placenta and 1 amniotic sac)

Any additional monitoring? Not this week

Rants/Raves/Questions?  I have been exhausted this week partially because I started a new job and the fact that I keep waking up in the middle of the night for 3-4 hours.  I think I am just anxious

GTKY: @mrs_drc_rn, exactly!  I love fall.  The crisp weather.  Pumpkins and apple picking and hay rides. Baggy sweaters.  Pumpkin spice everything
  • How far along are you? 14w

Why are you high-risk? Congenital condition that affects organs, blood vessels, heart, and brain. High risk for preterm labor and excessive bleeding. Baby could also have the condition, which would heighten all risks, but no way to know until baby gets here.

Any additional monitoring or testing this week? Just went in today to listen to the heartbeat, strong at 150bpm! I also graduated from regular OB to full time MFM to make sure everyone is prepared for baby’s arrival.

Rants/Raves/Questions? I would love to sleep through the night instead of getting up to pee every 2 hours, and sleep from 3am-6am.

GTKY: What is your favorite season and why? Fall! I miss it so much. I used to live in the mountains on the east coast and had the most beautiful fall, but now live in the southwest and fall is non-existent.

@PregoMego2015 I do computer work in the middle of the night! It is so annoying to not be able to sleep!

  • I guess I technically belong here too. :p

    How far along are you?
    11w3d

    Why are you high-risk?
Previous history with hypertension, previous miscarriage, likely diabetes/GD, and I'm old.

Any additional monitoring or testing this week?
I have my 3hr glucose test tomorrow morning, yeehaw, not. We should be getting the NIPT results back sometime this week, so I'm nervous about that. I think once that's behind us, I'll be able to settle and enjoy the experience a bit more.

    Rants/Raves/Questions?
I'm just annoyed about the whole diabetes thing in general. I've been keeping my a1c around 5 for the past couple of years, 6 months ago it was 4.8, this last test it was 5.1. I feel like I'm doing the best I can do as far as diet and taking my Metformin. I could definitely do better with exercise, especially lately, but I live in a rural area and this winter has sucked balls. Usually we get brief nice weather reprieves where I can walk the mile and a half to get the mail and back, but no, it's been ridiculously cold continuously (temps in the teens + high humidity = bone chilling cold), and our shaded road has been so icy I'm afraid of falling on the hills. Plus the new people that moved in down the road have like 13 dogs, most of which are pit mixes they let run around, and they've charged at me getting my mail from the truck, so I'm afraid to walk by myself the whole way without people being able to see or hear me if I need it. And this stupid corpus luteum cyst can fuck off. It hurts to go for a strenuous walk through the yard let alone anything else. I'm thinking of calling the local hotel in town and seeing if I can pay to use their indoor pool. I LOVE swimming and I think it'd be a good full body workout without much bouncing.

GTKY: What is your favorite season and why?
Any season but summer. I hate the heat, I hate the humidity, I hate the mosquitoes.
  • How far along are you?
    11w3d

Why are you considered high risk?
Two previous miscarriages, homo mthfr and pai-1 so I’m on daily blood thinner shots and baby aspirin

Any additional monitoring or testing this week?
I had a dating ultrasound yesterday since I didn’t have a period between my last miscarriage and this pregnancy—baby measured two days ahead of my count though, so everything looks good. Next appt is in a little over 2 weeks

    Rants/Raves/Questions?
Current rave is DH who keeps whining about how tired he is and how he thinks he has mono *eye roll* We have an 18 month old who doesn’t sttn—we’re all tired!

GTKY: What is your favorite season and why?
Spring and summer! I love summer because there’s so much to do and we can be outside, and I like spring because it means summer is on its way and the weather will only get nicer. So nice after being cooped up all winter. Fall is OK, but knowing winter is on the other end and it’ll be so long until we have nice days outside again is depressing.
  • @princesslockness My MIL has MTHFR and that's exactly what she and her endocrinologist call it. lol

  • @harleyquinn0621 - Thanks for asking! We have a very stubborn baby lol. He / she was all squished up then rolled over on his / her back and refused to let the tech get any good images of the back of the neck. Sigh. We tried for an hour, abdominal and vaginal and nothing. He / she is super cute though and I'm still amazed that there's a baby in there!

How are your sugars doing? I know you said you've had some weird readings lately.

  • @neeraja_k Who did you do your NIPT with? We did ours with claritest - our doc said it would be back in 5 business days, but it's 8 and counting :(
  • Sorry I am late lol!

    How far along are you?
    11w5d

    Why are you high-risk?
Type 2 diabetes. Found at 7 weeks in my first pregnancy over 6 years ago. I am on two types of insulin and 1500mg metformin (blah)

Any additional monitoring or testing this week?
My 12 weeks appointment tomorrow along with the Harmony testing. Next week is high risk Dr, ultrasound, and follow up with nutritionist.

    Rants/Raves/Questions?
Still feeling super crummy with the all day sickness and vomiting. Plus DD is just getting over the flu and strep throat and now the hubby (my biggest baby) has the flu and apparently the world is ending for him. I am disinfecting everything because I don't want to get sick on top of all this!
My numbers have been really good with a couple lows (also in the 40's) probably because baby is starting to rely on the placenta more. So adjustments will have to be made. I am also struggling to drink enough and will have to do a 24 hour urine test because they found ketones on.my last appointment.

GTKY: What is your favorite season and why?
Fall is my favorite! Leaves are gorgeous and the weather is perfect. We love fall camping and fires at night! Plus the hooded sweatshirts are amazing!
  • @mrsbubbles-2 awww sometimes they are stubborn and don't want to move for you. My last ultrasound was about 10w1d and the baby had curled up in a corner..... i'm like, why is there a corner in there to curl up in??!  :o   lol

blood sugar has been doing pretty good.... yesterday fasting was 99 which is higher than i like, dr wants it under 95 but other than that so far so good

  • @hezzer78 Ours was InformaSeq through LabCorp, I think it's the same as the Harmony/Materniti21 from what I've been reading.

My OB said that LabCorp and another company merged and they went from two labs in the US to just one. He said he's had some results come back in as little as 4 days and others take 14 days, so he honestly couldn't say when we'd get ours back.

It's been a week now and I was being patient, but I've apparently reached my limit. Lol
  • 100% off-topic, but @kburg15 I always read mthfr as Motherf***er. IDK why, just always makes me giggle.
Me too! My midwife said “You can remember it like Monday, Thursday, Friday”. Like yes...that’s how I remember it...haha
