  • Here's something I'm pondering today...

If you had to choose just one membership, which would you pick: Costco or Amazon Prime?

Thinking of getting one to help save on regular stuff we buy but also on diapers/wipes/etc when baby comes. FTM so curious what S+TMs think (and really anyone who has had one or both).

  • @elsie42 - Amazon Prime, all the way. You can get pretty much everything from Amazon, not only for you, but for baby, and have 2-day shipping for most items.
Literally if you realize you're getting low on wipes or something else, you can go on Amazon at 3 in the morning while nursing LO and get it in 2 business days, versus having to pack LO up in the car to travel to Costco.

  • @elsie42 and everyone else talking weight gain......thank you for discussing this!  I've been a little worried about that lately because I haven't gained much.  I know everyone is different but I also feel like I'm not showing much yet so I can't help but get a little worried.  It's good to know that not everyone has gained much weight!

Also I second Amazon Prime.  I have memberships to Prime and Costco.  We live SUPER close to Costco so it's easy for us to go there, plus I get gas from there all the time since it's a little cheaper and it's the closest gas station to my house anyway.  But even as close as we live, if I had to choose just one, I'd still probably pick prime!  Like others have said you can get anything from amazon so it will benefit you not just for baby stuff (not that costco is just baby stuff obviously but still).  I'm a FTM though so I can't speak specifically to baby stuff yet.  Glad to hear others saying prime/amazon family has good deals on diapers and wipes.  Although I've heard good things about kirkland diapers and wipes, can anyone speak to that?
  • @taykc90 I don't have a Costco membership, but my brother and his GF both work there and they love Kirkland diapers. She said she would still buy them, even without a discount.
  • I have a question about maternity clothes. I've finally decided to breakdown and buy some jeans from Old Navy. They offer them in "full panel", "side panel", and "low panel". I can look at the pictures and see what the difference is in each, but I don't understand why there are all these options. Are the different panels meant for different bump stages? Or is it just a preference for different women? I guess what my question really boils down to is, will I need each different style as my bump grows? Or should I just order one style of each, see what I like best, and I can be good with that for the duration of my pregnancy?

  • @LaceyBee522 preference, I think. I think side panels look most “normal” but some side panel ones have weird stitching in the front ish that can dig into le tummy.
  • @LaceyBee522 From what i've seen, and heard, it depends on preference.  I like the full panel because i know they will work the entire pregnancy, and i feel more "Secure" with my bump haha The low panel is nice too because its just like a ring of fabric around the top that sits under your bump.  I think you can wear the low panel through the entire pregnancy too.  Side panel, I've never been a fan of.  They just don't see to stay up for me.

  • @LaceyBee522 I am also a FTM so take my advice with a grain of salt...

I got some of the side panel maternity jeans from ON and I like them but they fall down all the time! I am yanking and hiking them up all day.

I got some over the bump pants from friends and they say up much better! However, the material is kind of itchy on the stomach and the top rolls down when I'm sitting at my desk all day.

I also got some half panel dress pants from friends and so far these are my favorite. The top doesn't roll down and they stay up fairly well.

I have a little mini bump and I am sure my thoughts will change as I get bigger.

  • Prime- hands down!  I love my Sams membership (their produce is so underrated...so fresh)...but prime is where its at.  I can't even begin to count how many times I ordered formula or diapers in the motn while feeding or rocking...maybe it was baby stuff, maybe it was sleep deprived personal stuff because I clearly NEEDED it....I've joked (maybe joked??) that the next baby shower I go to if the mom doesn't have a prime membership that would be my gift instead of actual baby stuff...

LaceyBee522 - totally personal preference.  I've found that the 1 pair of ON jeans I have stretch out so much faster than the jeans I got at motherhood so they're probably my least favorite.  I like full panel so I don't have to keep pulling them up all the time.  ALso in the winter it is an extra layer to keep me warm on my walk to work, lol.  In the summer I will sometimes fold the top layer over so it isn't as high/suffocating.  I feel like the half panels fall down a lot and leave a weird seam showing through my shirts....so all personal preference.

  • @LaceyBee522 it’s personal preference. At Old Navy you can return in store so you could order different styles and return the ones you don’t like. I like over the bump but some women find it annoying/irritating.
  • @LaceyBee522 yes to what @krashke said. Old Navy maternity pants make me hike them up all day long. And I mean, not just a little pulling. Like flat out would fall all the way off my behind if I wasn't yanking them up all day. I have a pair of the side panel ones and they stay up substantially better at this phase for me than the full panels. This is also coming from someone with not a whole lot of round bump action going on. I'm still holding out hope that the full panel ones will suck less when I'm more belly.
  • Can we talk about ovens? At the risk of sounding ridiculously dumb, can someone tell me about the self clean feature? I tried to use it once and got scared and stopped it because I legit thought it was going to start my house on fire. I want to try again but being 0 degrees outside I can’t open too many windows. Is it as scary as I think it is, or do I need to just put on my big girl pants and do it?

  • @lisa2589 I think we tried it at my mom's house once, and it was totally fine, but it also didn't really do anything.
  • lisa2589  - I do it every so often (should probably do it more).  The smoke detectors in my house are SO sensitive they go off just from preheating the oven (when it is super clean).  In our old house it must have had a lot of residue in it while self cleaning and there were legit flames in my oven...YIKES!  I was flipping but DH (who is a firefighter for the AF and has been for 14 years...dad has been a ff for 20- 30 years...retires this weekend actually) said it is NBD.  Keeping the oven door closed actually smothers the flames and doesn't give it any fuel to spread.  With that being said...I have used the self cleaning function MANY times since then with  no flames
  • @kmurdock925 thanks! I feel better knowing that even when there were flames involved, it turned out fine. I think maybe I will give it a good once over by hand to get as much as I can before I let loose with the self-cleaning part.

  • @lisa2589 I haven't tried this but I saw it on pinterest and was considering trying it

  • Yep the only time I used the self clean feature there were flames.

So apparently putting aluminum foil on the bottom catches drippings and makes cleaning not as necessary so I need to remember to do this!
  • Some of you live in Sacramento, right? Do you like it? I've actually never been, so I never considered it for moving to CA, but it is so much more affordable than the bay area, and it's not THAT far from my mom in the north bay...

Wait. So self cleaning could involve flames? Nope. Never doing it. I don't do anything that gives me any house fire anxiety.
So that obviously tells you I've never done it on ours.

  • @doxiemoxie212 I live just south of Sacramento and it's great.  The drive to SF is just a couple hours, and then if you go the other way a couple hours you're at Tahoe and the snow.  The restaurant/nightlife is obviously lacking compared to SF, but it's honestly pretty good.  There are a lot of nice restaurants (and a growing vegetarian/vegan scene <3), tons of bars/music, and the Golden One center attracts a lot of big musicians if you're into concerts (I got to see Paul McCartney!).  All that said I'm not really a big night life person so I generally stay home lol.

  • @ratparade the veg scene was really what I was curious about ;) IDGAF about nightlife either, so that's good to hear... I mentioned it to DH, and he got really annoyed, but I'm going to keep sending him houses that are literally half the price of close to SF houses lol and see if he starts to consider it....
  • @elsie42 super late to the party answering your question but I'm on the lower end of weight gain and my doctor is OK with it. I started pregnancy around 170 (lots of leftover baby weight from my son still) and I was 167 at my 8 week appointment. I'm 164 now at 21 weeks. So I'm down from my starting weight but up from my weight at 15 weeks (159). Like @izza2 said my doctor mostly just wants to make sure I'm keeping down food and water and that baby looks good. Baby was healthy and in the 88th percentile at the anatomy scan so no concerns there.

As to the whole one membership question: for the actual savings I'd say Costco. For convenience I'd say Amazon Prime. So, ya know, it's up to you whether you'd rather save a couple of extra dollars or have the extra convenience.

@LaceyBee522 Yes and Yes. In my opinion the full panel work better when you have a huge bump but that style has never really worked for me early on. The panel ends up coming all the way up to your boobs before you have a larger bump and the pants often don't stay up well. I had a skirt that had the side panels and by 31 weeks I couldn't wear it anymore. I honestly should have retired it sooner because trying to squeeze my bump into it later on just completely ruined the elastic. I'm assuming you'd have similar results with side panel pants. The under the belly style worked fairly well for me even later in pregnancy with my son. Bonus: they were my absolute favorites for the PP phase where you still kinda look pregnant and your normal cloths either don't fit again yet or they do but just look... wrong. I just couldn't make myself wear the full panel things PP because they were so hot in the middle of summer. It didn't bother me so much while I was pregnant because those things fit the best but afterwards when I had more options the full panels got ditched really fast.

  • @elsie42 Costco saves me more money but Amazon saves time/effort. I would drop Prime and keep Costco if I had to pick.

Question: Has anyone heard of or had CranialSacral therapy? I have a gift card for a massage therapist who specializes in it. She also does traditional Swedish massage. I'd prefer the Swedish but she won't do it prenatally because she isn't trained. She'll do CranialSacral on pregnant clients. I'm not worried about the safety I'm just not sure I'll like it or benefit from it. Google tells me its some sort of alternative medicine type thing that some people claim (and some dispute) helps all sorts of conditions I don't have. I'm wondering if it feels good/ would be as relaxing as a massage...

  • @doxiemoxie212 I've never been to Sacramento, but a friend loves it for all the reasons @RatParade articulated: you're "just close enough" to everything. Oh and, as a bonus, you can actually afford to live there.

Have any of you found or do you attend daycares that are cloth diaper-friendly? So far I'm 0 for 2 and, while I'm interested in cloth diapering mostly for landfill-friendly reasons, the marginal cost savings were a nice bonus. If you're buying disposables for 5 days of the week regardless, though, it becomes a fairly pricey proposition. I totally understand the reasons care providers are hesitant to cloth diaper, just curious if I should keep holding out for one that's willing to accommodate or if it's a lost cause.
  • @llamamama14 I took DS to a chiro after he was born who did cranial-sacral therapy (and other treatments) for latch related issues.  It helped relax him.  But I've never tried it myself!
  • @llamamama14 osteopaths always do it, so yes, I’ve had it done. I have no idea if it does anything but I do like how it feels. If you like someone sort of gently touching your scalp then you’ll like it. I don’t know if it’s different having a massage therapist do it vs an actual doctor tho?
  • Costco is cheaper than Prime, as far as diapers go, if you buy Costco brand- which I love.
I never use the self clean on the oven, it smells terrible. I make a paste of baking soda and water, smear it all over and leave it overnight. It wipes off with a soft sponge in the morning and all the gunk comes with it. Takes me 5 minutes to clean.
  • @doxiemoxie212 Sacramento is the "farm to fork capital", so there are always big food events that lots of restaurants participate in, and there's always vegetarian stuff in there.  It's pretty sweet.

  • @RatParade I read about that, which sounds awesome! It's weird because I never actively thought this about Sacramento, but when I saw the movie Lady Bird, and she says, "Sacramento is like the midwest of California," I was like oh shit, that is how I think of it. But it seems like it's changed a lot, and that reputation doesn't really fit anymore (not that there's anything wrong with the midwest, but that Sacramento is becoming more typical of what one would expect in California).
  • @doxiemoxie212 - if it makes you feel better...my DH's friend took a job in Sacramento...We're from Columbus, OH- so Midwest...his friend def enjoys nightlife and what not...isn't the settle down type etc and still thinks Sacramento is "too California" for him, lol.  My point- the lens of it being too Midwest from someone from Cali isn't the same lens as someone from the Midwest...

    food for thought :)
