Re: UO Thursday 1/11

  • @wildtot I also wash new clothes and DH doesn't.  But I have super sensitive skin so that is more the reason

I don't mind multiple showers or sprinkles. I don't mind if the parents throw their own (I will not host my own, but it doesn't bother me in the slightest who hosts their shower.)

I personally do not understand why people get so worked up about who hosts what and how gift grabby something may seem. You are not forced to go. You are not forced to buy off the registry. Just chill out, have fun, and eat some cake. Life is too short to sweat the small stuff!

  • Can my UO be that I don’t like baby showers for me?! I like going to other people’s shower and giving gifts. I found that they cause drama. My MIL got mad that we didn’t post more about the shower she threw for us on Facebook and stopped talking to us for a few months. My church threw a shower and the one women pushed and pushed for my hubs to go. He didn’t want to because he is a non believer and doesn’t feel comfortable there...he sucked it up and went but I felt bullied. My coworker complained about pitching in money with the rest of the staff for gifts.

I just felt like the parties were not about the baby. Don’t pitch in money and don’t throw a shower if you are going to make issues.

I think as our group gets further along, they will see some drama revolving around the parties. I think if they get all clothing or say, five dish washer caddies, which happens when people go off the registry, they will be little frustrated rather than 100% greatful. Sure, they will appreciate that people came but will be disappointed that they didn’t get useful gifts. Other posters are right in saying that people don’t owe you anything and you should be greatful for what you get but at the same time it is human nature and reasonable to be disappointed when you need so many things. The purpose of showers is to help the expecting parents get things that they need and celebrate the baby. I always purchase off the registry.
  • @tarheelgirl8 @chaser61 Yes yes yes...I didn't feel entitled in the least with my registry with my first. I knew all big ticket purchases we needed would be bought by us, my mom or in-laws..however after (I'm not kidding) the 37th blanket I received it became a hassle to go to every store and make multiple returns (heavily pregnant) sometimes without a receipt. I would have been 10x more appreciative of a $5 pack of Nuks...same situation with clothes. The exception obviously to handmade items which were/are deeply treasured.

SO I always buy off the registry for someone else. In fact I try to think "what is the least glamorous yet most useful thing on here that no one else will buy her?" And start there.

  • My go to shower items are:

    1. I crochet a newborn hat
    2. Diapers or something USEFUL from the registry. I generally set a registry budget depending on how close we are.
    3. One or two cute outfits.

I was pretty lucky that some people actually went off my registry and bought stuff that they personally found useful with their babies. I think the huge can of triple paste was one of my favorites ;)
  • @BrittG13 I hear you in the $5 gifts! A pack of wipes or nuks, like you said...yes please. Little things add up and if someone is low on cash, they are perfect options.

@cseley321 ha can of triple paste. People added a tube of butt paste to their gifts and I never had to buy any! It was great!

So glad to hear you say this!  I was worried I was going to come across as one of the entitled ones. :) I literally still have several baby blankets and newborn outfits in the bottom of DDs closet that I never even opened or washed, but didn’t have the energy or time to return.  I’m grateful for the thought but I hate knowing money was wasted (whether it’s mine or not).

@cseley321 I do think it’s sometimes good to go off registry for things you think they’ll need, like diaper cream.  I try to be careful with that though.  We got a gift like that and I had specifically not registered for the item because we had been given a great condition, hand-me-down from our neighbors.
  • @hayhay93 @SmashJam +1 for The Magicians! But we don't have cable so I'm only just now getting caught up on season 2. I love that all the characters are dynamic and a bit screwed up in one way or another.
  • We don’t have cable either. Where are you watching season 2? I watched the first few episodes of season 2 several months ago and I can’t remember for the life of me where I watched it! @noideawhatshesdoing
  • @hayhay93 it’s on Netflix! Just started season 2 last night!
  • Awesome! Thank you! Putting Desperate Housewives on hold right now lol. @acunamatada
  • @hayhay93 @noideawhatshesdoing @SmashJam no cable here either but just finished season 2. Hopefully season 3 will go up during mat leave lol
  • @noideawhatshesdoing haha I love boobs too. Mine arent usually very out there but if I had they opportunity they probably would be lol
  • I tried watching the second season yesterday, but I am one of those crazy people that always feels like I have to start over completely if it’s been too long between seasons. I can’t remember the ending of the first season, so I think I’m going to restart it! Lol. @wildtot
  • @hayhay93 that’s how i feel about stranger things
  • It sucks how long it takes for new seasons to come out on Netflix. @wildtot
  • @hayhay93 I'm only on season 1 ep 7 so we can catch up together! Season 3 just started right?
  • I’ll start watching tonight and try to catch up to you! The first ep of season 3 just came out on the 10th according to google, so we have time! @SmashJam
  • Boobs. I kind of thought pregnancy would give me some. No. such. luck.

I keep hearing people talk about stranger things. I want to check that out.
  • @babybakie the boobs will come! I stayed the same till delivery with DS.
