ST+M's...do you find diaper pails necessary? It seems that with the frequency that a medium sized can would get filled with dirty diapers you would be taking it out faster than it could stink. The pails seem like a lot of money and work for how little they hold and how frequently you would have to take them out.

@krashke I didn't use one for DD. She got changed wherever it was easiest to change her (mostly the living room) and I just put the dirty diapers into the kitchen garbage and emptied that more frequently. I don't think it was any more stinky or smelly than my normal kitchen garbage was.
@krashke I’m curious to see what answers you get. I’m probably going to be the oddball but have changed 95% of diapers in her room on the changing table and still use the diaper pail to this day.
@krashke we defintely still use our diaper pail in our sons nursery! And when he was smaller we had one downstairs too ( I was accidentally gifted two at my shower so it worked out pretty well). If he gets changed downstairs now it just goes in the kitchen trash, but he’s smelly so it defintely stinks up our kitchen if it’s not taken out right away
@krashke I’m with @boymama29 for the first 6 months or so we had a pail upstairs and downstairs. Now DD only gets changed upstairs since we’re changing so few, but we still use the pail.

@krashke I totally regret our Diaper Genie. It had to be emptied CONSTANTLY and I hated the stupid refill bags. I change almost all of my son's dirty diapers upstairs on the changing table, but I just carry the dirty diaper downstairs with me and toss it in the kitchen trash. I felt like I was carrying the stupid genie bag downstairs practically everyday, anyway. And we've never had any smell issues just using our regular garbage.

@krashke We got a pail, and still use it for DD who is 2 yo in her room. We opted to not have the twisty poop-sausage kind of diaper pail that requires specific refills. We got the basic, drop - compartment type that uses Kitchen garbage bags (with Febreeze)... saved us some $, and well, the need for specific refills.
On a side note, a friend of mine ran a load of laundry through the washer, with 2 dirty disposable diapers somehow mixed in. (TWICE!) Ladies, let me tell you ... while it can be fixed, it it not something you want to happen. CONTAIN those things.

@krashke We have a Dekor diaper pail and I’ve used with both for cloth diapers and disposables. We still use it for DS at 18m. I bought their brand washable bags for cloth and the refill things for disposables. The pack of bags last quite awhile.
krashke I still use our diaper pail at 18 months. I keep it in her room. Diapers changed downstairs go in the garage trash (hello stink...I can smell it in the garage when I go out there...I don't want my kitchen smelling like that). I have the ubbi pail which is stainless steel and takes regular trash bags. I get febreeze bags and will occasionally spray some cleaner in the pail for good measure. I take the bag out on trash day and that is completely sufficient.
When choosing a pail though I was pretty adamant about not wanting to have to get special refill bags.
Speaking of disposable diapers...has anyone started stockpiling diapers? I've picked up a few boxes but want to kick it into high gear this second half of pregnancy. Any tips or tricks for getting the best deals? I see that Target has a spend $75, get $15 coupon going on.
@krashke we had one with my sister (she’s 12 years younger than me) and it was just a stinky, full, tiny trash can. My answer depends on what your house is like. If you’re changing upstairs in a bedroom, I’d just say keep a trash can upstairs somewhere. We have one in the laundry room upstairs.
Our last house was a ranch and I didn’t need another trash can, I just carried the diapers to the main one every time because of the short distance.
I think diaper genies are honestly just a money waster. They’re just too small trash cans.
Now, one thing I ended up liking that a lot of people advised against was a wipe warmer. Maybe it was because DS was born in winter or whatever but I love that thing and so does he.
Maybe this is showing my naivety, but I was sort of planning on just putting the dirty diapers inside dog poop bag things and then throwing them in whatever trash (likely the kitchen) since our apt is legit 2 small bedrooms, a v v v small bathroom, galley kitchen and small living room so like..........IDK? I mean, we take our kitchen garbage out to the trash chute every day...
I will just throw this out there for something to consider in the future. Newborns poopy diapers kind of stink. You could probably let them sit in your garbage for the rest of the day without noticing much. 1+ year olds that are eating mostly solids? Those poopy diapers linger a lot more. I don’t know if I’d be comfortable throwing them in my kitchen garbage for any amount of time at that point.
@harveyabbey77 we stocked up with DD. I used diapers.com zulily amazon and just watched for deals and promos. I would also sign up for discounts and use a bunch of different emails and use DHs email too.

@krashke we still use our diaper genie at 19 months with DD, and I just bought a second one for upstairs too.
honestly, newborn poop doesn’t smell much if you plan on breastfeeding, so throwing them in the garbage wouldn’t be a big deal.. it’s when they start eating solids that the smell becomes a problem. We sometimes throw out dirty diapers into the regular garbage can and you can smell them whenever someone opens it up to throw more garbage out.. sometimes you can even smell them through the garbage can even when it’s closed. Never had that problem with a genie
We had a diaper genie. After awhile we stopped buying the bag inserts and rigged it with regular shopping bags. It didn't 'close' the bag like what happens with the refills. But we kept it back in a room far away from living areas. It did get smelly as he got older. Ours is gross, so I might get a new one... or look into other closed can options. But pretty sure I'll start some new method, pee only in the can. And poop is going in a special can on the basement landing.

harveyabbey77 - I got a BRU flier...I believe this starts Jan 10th or 11th (I don't know the end date) but when you buy 2 giant boxes of diapers (I don't remember if there are brand limitations) you get a $20 gift card.
@doxiemoxie212 - Dog poop bags are a great addition to the diaper bag. In your living situation I would think that would be a good use of them as well. I definitely put them in plastic grocery bags tied/sealed up really well.
Same as @kmurdock925 - I use plastic grocery bags. I don't have a diaper genie, just a small trash can with a lid/step to open. Pee diapers are fine to sit there until it's full, but once they're eating solid foods I recommend all poop diapers go outdoors.
So that comes back to your living situation. Are you in an apartment where taking out the trash isn't feasible multiple times daily? A diaper genie may be a good thing. We were in a small house and would literally drop the poopy bags onto the back porch (that no one used) until we could take them all to the trashcan in the driveway at the end of the day.

I have issues tagging with the app, but thanks everyone who responded to my question about DD! I know they’re not popular, but I actually like our Diaper Genie. We’ve had to replace it, but it’s not a crazy expense over the two years we’ve used it. I’ve tried a regular trash can and it didn’t go well. But, as has been said, it certainly depends on your house and living situation.
We have an ubbi too which I love and still use for DS. You can use regular trash bags. We changed the majority of diapers in DS’s room because bending over to handle diapers isn’t fun.
Im anti scented trash bags because poop+flowers isn’t a good smell. Plus, I hate fragrance and am of the opinion that babies shouldn’t be around too much fragrance since they are so sensitive.
@marcus7676 when I was 18, I went to college and bought trash bags myself for the first time ever. I just got the first ones I saw, didn’t notice it said they were scented (didn’t know that was a thing bc my mom is suuuper sensitive to scents), and spent the next week SO CONFUSED about where the perfume smell was coming from lol. I did not enjoy.
Maybe I should save this for next weeks UO but I like scented trash bags. I get not wanting more scent around the babies but I don’t find that the scent lingers. I like the lavender scented Target brand bags.

Hey everyone, not sure if this is the right place to ask this, but have any other FTM’s experience what they thought was movement yet? I’m 16 weeks 4 days and I felt a kind of popcorn popping last night. I could also feel it with my hand on my low tummy. It happened a few times then stopped, in the same place. It didn’t feel like gas or anything I’ve ever felt before...Is this movement? Or is it just different gas because my intensities are getting squished?
@helenbz it very well may be movement! I've always called those first faint sensations flutters because they make me think of butterfly wings. If you have a posterior placenta it's very possible those are what you are feeling, and with subsequent pregnancies you may be able to detect them even sooner.
@helenbz I’m also a FTM, I’m 19+1, but I started feeling movement in my 16th week. I’m thin with a posterior placenta. Baby girl moves a lot, and by week 17, DH could feel it too.
@helenbz with my so , my first, I started feeling movement around 16 weeks. It wouldn't be often. Maybe 1 quick flutter a week. I wasn't sure it was baby either. It felt like a muscle twitch or something. I wasn't really sure it was baby till 18 or 19 weeks when I was still feeling the same thing around the same place only stronger and more often. I did have an anterior placenta so it's possible I would have felt more earlier on if I hadn't had an anterior placenta.
TL;DR: If you think you're feeling movement I would believe you are.

@sunshineandwhiskey I have bad tailbone pain that will sometimes wrap around to the front of my hips. I started doing prenatal yoga and it’s really helps move the baby to a more comfortable position.
