POLL: Kick Counts... do you... did you?

So... I got a kick count "sheet" from Kaiser @ 28 weeks, but little instruction as to how often/when to do it.  There's some info. on The Web, of course, but I was more interested to hear what you all did.

How often did/do you do the kick counts (once a day, more than once a day, at certain intervals)?

Did/do you write that info. down somewhere?

I have a VERY active little guy growing here.  I feel him off and on through out the day (and night!)... so to be honest... I haven't reeeally been thinking about tracking/officially doing kick counts... since I feel him OFTEN.  I know how important kick counts can be... and I guess I just need a little push/instruction on how to go about them.

TIA.

Re: POLL: Kick Counts... do you... did you?

  • My doctor never asked me to do them. Hours go by and I don't feel him, but I think thats normal. He's mellow and I have an anterior placenta, i think it changes things a little.
  • Loading the player...
  • I've never done them.  With my first PG, the OB never mentioned it.  With my second OB, she did mention it, but didn't give any instructions.  Just told me I should be doing them, and that was the end of the conversation.
  • I do them/did them with all the kids.  I usually do it every night after I put the other kids to bed. I just sit and relax and count 10 movements.  It usually happens in about 10-20 minutes.  I don't write it down or anything, I just remember to do it every night.  If you don't feel 10 movements within 1-2 hours they usually suggest that you call L&D to be on the safe side.
  • I had KP and got the lil pink card, I tried to be good at first and did them, mainly at night when it was quiet and after dinner.

He was fairly active around 31 weeks as well, but I found I did them more when I wasn't feeling him as much later, when he grew and didn't have as much room in there!

Its good to do so you have a baseline...

  • I had the sheet, but honestly, Ryan was so active that I got the required number of kicks in about 3 minutes so I just paid more attention to if he was moving or not.

Nobody said life would be easy, they just promised it would be worth it.

Ditto.  He moved so much I didn't worry about counting, keeping track, etc.  If I didn't feel him for a while (or didn't notice, which was more likely) I would slow down, drink some juice and he'd get going again.

  • My OB never really mentioned it.  But N was really active.  So if I noticed that I had not felt her for a little while I'd start counts, but I never had to wait long for her to get to 10 kicks, it was usually about 10 minutes max.
  • My Dr. gave me a form to fill out, after eating to count and make sure it was a certain number in an hour. (I forget the #). I was going to, but D was SUPER active in me and I never had to.. he always let me know he was there.

  • I was just talking about this over the weekend...I never did the kick counts. For me it was more of did I feel Baby A more than Baby B or vice versa. If I didn't feel Baby A much I'd lay on the side where he was positioned and I'd feel him in just a matter of seconds (poor little guy was squished!). If I wanted to get a show out of Baby B---I drank TJ's Blood Orange Italian Soda...worked every time!! Big Smile

Ditto to that with this pregnancy!  However, with Garrison I did them more than once a day.  He didn't get super active until the night time. But I was teaching until I was 37 weeks with him so maybe I just didn't notice as much.

Ditto this for the most part. I have mostly been doing unofficial counts. If I'm skeptical that she really got 10-20 moves in an hour, then I definitely have had some OJ and laid down for a while to count. But I've only had to do that maybe 7 times since 28 weeks because she's really active/forceful so it's easy for me to keep a loose count throughout the day.

I've never written any of it down.

  • My babies were both really active, so the only time I did kick counts is when I hadn't felt them for a while and started to worry. Then I'd lay down (on my left side), drink some water or o.j., and count every movement until I got to 10. It never took more than an hour, but if it did, I would have called my dr. at that point.

  • I have been considering posting the same thing for a couple of weeks, and keep forgetting, so thanks Alison!

I haven't been doing them and have been feeling a little guilty about it. But like the others, I have a very active little one and definitely notice when there's any kind of lull in movement. I feel like I know what to do if there is any question in my mind, too. Glad to know we're in good company!

:)  My DH gave me the finger wag last night for not doing them.  I tried to explain that I didn't feel a reason too since Baby is so active.  Now I've got Nester proof!  ;)

  • I was required to do them twice a day as part of the pre-term birth prevention program Kaiser had me in. Sabrina was rather mellow, plus she was head down and engaged so early that her movement was restricted early. It's just 10 movements (kicking, rolling, punching, just movement) within 1-2 hours. For me they were really watching changes in activity. I gave them the number and they tracked it.

  • Mine only suggested I do them if I didn't feel him for a while.  Then, I should lay down, drink something and try to get 10 in a hour.
  • I had an anterior placenta and N was pretty mellow.  I felt a lot more 'rolling' than kicking, even early on.  I would do kick counts after each meal, because that's when she would be most active.  I would just make a mark on a piece of paper for each movement and stop when I got to 10.

  • I did them, typically in the morning when I was laying in bed watching the news before work.  He was so active that it took no time at all to make the counts.  I wrote them on the kick count card that Kaiser gave me.

As far as instructions, take 10 minutes, lay down and wait for him to start kicking.  I did it after my shower in the morning, I get back in bed to wake DH, I would lay on my back and wait for P to start moving.

When you count, it doesn't have to be a kick, any movement counts.  I loved doing it!

  • I did them 2x a day, morning and night, to make sure C was still ok per docs orders. ?Ten in an hour was the goal, or I made a trip to the Obs or L&D. He failed a few times and I had to go in for NSTs. He was not the most active baby or even very consistent and we had a bunch of reasons to worry -- low amniotic fluid level and my high bp can lead to bad outcomes in short order -- so those kick counts were my lifeline and only hold on sanity some days.?

?I kept a pad of sticky notes with me and kept a tally with a start time to make sure it was in the allotted time.

  • I got the sheet but didn't really do it.  Emmy was so active I didn't need to worry about getting whatever amount it was a day.  She'd do it in like 5 minutes.
  • I got so excited reading this, I hope I get to count rolls and kicks and punches.
