Re: Product Spotlight NY Day Edition: Diapering!

  • This is what I found from my experience. Pamper swaddles are amazing until they get mobile Cruisers after that for more give in legs. I have a very petite child and found pampers offered the best fit and absorption. Huggies in same size are bigger built and especially good if you have a kid with chubby legs. My son also has super sensitive skin so I never experimented with cheaper brands.

  • I used cloth with my first and will again. I started out with using Flips but towards the end I fell in love with Blueberry and Nickis. I will probably slowly change my entire stash to the latter two brands bc I liked the quality a lot more. I use prefolds inserts and a diaper sprayer for the poop. For wipes I have some flannel wipes and some baby wash clothes, both work well. I make a mix of eczema friends soap, coconut oil, and hot water (to melt the oil), then pour over my wipes and seal them. Usually I make a new batch every 2 days to keep them fresh. Kanga Care had my favorite diaper pail liners  and wet bags

  • At home we use pampers during the day (swaddlers or baby dry and then cruisers) but found that Huggies are better overnight.  Money saver: for daycare we send Target brand.  They are required to change them at least every 2 hours, usually it's more often, so you don't need crazy absorbtion there.  And they're like half the price but good quality.

We don't have anything crazy like wipe warmers or whatever.  Huggies wipes are full garbage, we use pampers sensitive always because DD1 has sensitive skin.  We use desitin only when they have a rash.  Don't know if this is truly diapering related, but you want the Ubbi diaper pail, it is head and shoulders above the other kinds.  Seriously NO smell when it's closed, and it uses normal kitchen bags.  We have two (one upstairs and one downstairs).  If you live on multiple floors in your house, plan for a changing area on each one.

We also use pampers swaddlers during the day, pampers baby dry over night, and pampers sensitive skin wipes. Pro tip - size up your diapers one size at night when your baby starts sleeping through the night for better absorption.

Also second @delujm0's  suggestion of having a changing area on each floor of your house. We bought some rolling IKEA carts and stocked them with wipes, diapers, trash bags, and also some nursing supplies (nursing cover, breast pads, nipple cream) and snacks when DD was still nursing. So helpful.
  • Cloth: Best Bottoms. They’re a little on the pricey side, but they’ve never leaked poop, and the fit is great.

Disposables: We use pampers swaddlers at night and they are great. Hated huggies.

Diaper Cream: Grovia magic stick is great for the diaper bag because you don’t have to get it on our hands (it works like chapstick). Desitin really gets the job done for bad rashes.

Super recommend the Baby Bum Brush. I thought they were silly at first, but when DS had a bad rash and I was lathering him up at every change, I was tired of getting the cream on my hands. I wish I had bought one a long time ago! It’s simple and inexpensive, just get one!!!!

  • Cloth: AlvaBaby purchased on Amazon. They're probably the cheapest CD you can buy at about $30-40 for a pack of 6. I've used these since she was about 6 weeks old. Some moms have trouble with these leaking but my kiddo has been great and I've been lucky to get into cloth diapers relatively inexpensive. I love these and the patterns are super cute, there is a huge selection. I recommend getting a starter kit to figure out which brands you like best. We stuff these with inserts and take them apart to clean.

Wipes: seventh generation free and clear. Super strong and thick unlike others I've tried. They are $30 for a big package of 768 wipes, which lasts a few months.

Ditto to on the baby bum brush. So worth it and I wish I would have had it sooner. No matter how short your nails, that stuff always gets stuck under them. We use Bordeaux Butt Paste and that works super fast.

    Hello from Detroit!

    • Favorite [diapering product]: Huggies or Pampers until in size 2, then Luvs. They are cheap, but very nice and have worked well with both my chunky thighed kid & my skin&bones one.
    • Cost (either actual dollar amount, or just $, $$, $$$, etc.): A 160 count case is $21 on Amazon.
    • What you like about it: They fit well, and they are super absorbent. My kids have STTN since like 2 weeks old, and I am NOT waking them up to change in MOTN, so absorbent was best.
    • What you don't like about it, if anything:
    • Is there a [diapering product] you don't have but are considering? Why?:
    • Is there a [diapering product] you've tried that you absolutely hate? Why?: Destin. It never worked for my kids' rashes.
    • Additional thoughts on [diapering]?: Butt paste is wonderful for rashes, and so is Coconut oil for the tar poop phase. Oil them up each change, then its super easy to get that nasty stuff off without rubbing their skin off.

  • I actually really like target diapers. They're well priced, usually on cartwheel, and easy to grab. I've also had good luck with pampers. I agree with @lalala2004 about huggies. We only got them once and hated them.

Also I really liked having the nice thick diaper cream. DS was one of those babies that pooped every time we ate so diaper cream was important. We mostly used A&D.
  • I forgot to include what I like about cloth- I never have to run to the store bc we're out of diapers or wipes. Also I don't have to worry about the trash or smell of sposies.

We used Pampers the first few months with DS and the swaddlers and baby dry were both great!! We were not a fan of Huggies or Luvs. We switched primarily to a Target diapers and have been using them ever since. The price is Great and often deals on Cartwheel! We never had any issues with leaks during the day and when DS started leaking through at night consistently. we just sized up for overnight and never had issues after that!

Wipes - Kirkland brand from Costco are our go-to!

+1 for Ubbi diaper pail!! The thing is amazing.

Aquaphor baby or Bourdeaux butt paste always workd works great for diaper rash. I also used just coconut oil a few times and it worked wonders!

Also, good suggestions on the changing areas on both floors! We were in a one-story condo with DS, so only had one in his room. We moved and bought a two-story home over the summer, so will definitely be doing that this time around!

  • We found that we liked the Pampers Baby Dry better than the Swaddlers. Even for during the day. And when Honest Company has new, cute prints, I can never resist them
  • I may have to give to baby dry a try. We use those at night now with DS but never when he was bitty

  • For us Huggies and honest were worthless and Pampers was really expensive. We actually had a lot of luck with luvs even though they are not as soft. Then I discovered target brand, and hope those work for this baby to, cuz they were great!
We use target brand wipes too.
Hates: desitin. It was too thick, and would up suffocating the rash, and was really hard to wipe off.
Loves: A&D, coconut oil, and Vaseline worked well on diaper rashes for us.

Story of my life! Wondering how DD will get through my hospital stay without me.
  • I started with Honest and thought I liked them until they had some recalls and I felt like they were hiding things. I switched to Parasol and love them! They are so soft and make Honest feel like cardboard. They are $$$ and only available online but beyond that I think they’re totally worth it. They don’t hold a smell in, but I don’t want my daughter sitting in a diaper that needs changing anyway. I wish they had them at the store but my subscription seems to time it pretty well. Also, I didn’t think I liked their wipes but once I got used to them I much prefer them. They’re soft and not sopping wet. I never used a wipe warmer and only use Honest Organic Healing Balm in her diaper when I feel like she could use it. I started out very minimal and worked my way up (like no soap in baths or cream only when needed). If you have a registry it’s great to be stocked but don’t pre-open diapers and put them in organizers because you can’t return them or even donate them once they’ve been opened.

We liked Huggies before DS grew into his cloth. He started in their preemie size, and Huggies P fit him better than Pampers P. When he started wearing cloth, my faves were Kawaii pockets from The Luv Your Baby Co. I plan to get some more in the smaller size they sell so they fit this baby earlier.

We tried Luvs for traveling, and they gave DS horrible diaper rash.
  • Our set up was $$ but in the end saved us a ton of money buying disposable wipes AND my daughter only had diaper rash once her entire diaper career.

We used sposies (huggies were our brand once she got to size 4 cause they have these diapers you can just pull up/down.) before size four we used Babyganics- but with next baby we will be using el cheapo Target brand.

But the ticket to our diaper rash free sucess I like to attribute to cloth wipes.

They work high and above better than disposable wipes. When I watch my sisters kids and use their sposie wipes- ugh! The difference is extreeme! We had a combo of flannel, cotton and bamboo wipes all of which added up to about 30-40 bucks. Good thing is we still have them do this go round they are paid for!

from there we made a wipe wash out of water, and Dr. Bronners Baby soap (liquid), sometimes a bit of olive oil but we eventually cut that part out. That’s it. Water down the soap majorly and wala!

For outtings you bring a bunch of wipes and a spray bottle of the soap mixture. Wet the wipe and go.

We did need wet bags to contain the used wipes till wash day. But when my daughter got older they became great for trips to the lake or the pool to contain the wet clothes and we are still using them.

And should add: for my daughter we never wiped her inner labia. If poo got in there we used a cue tip to fish it out of the inner lips. Soap, in general, shouldn’t mess around with the vulva.

Before bed or any car ride we would slather her up with Bordeaux’s butt paste.

I’m actually a br excited to break my wipes back out. Oh! And we did have a wipe warmer, it was vey nice in winter as we live in a drafty home and those wipes got cold cold cold!  And it wasn’t super expensive. We got Lionheart brand from walmart for $20.
    • Favorite [diapering product]: We use Honest - I love the subscription / bundle option.
    • Link/picture:
    • Cost (either actual dollar amount, or just $, $$, $$$, etc.):
    • What you like about it: We used Pampers Swaddlers a bit but they were "bunchy" on E, I don't know really how to describe it. My little guy has a round tummy and chunky thighs so we found that Honest fit the best.
    • What you don't like about it, if anything:
    • Is there a [diapering product] you don't have but are considering? Why?:
    • Is there a [diapering product] you've tried that you absolutely hate? Why?:
    • Additional thoughts on [diapering]?: As much as I like Honest I'm not sure if we'll stick with their Overnights for much longer. E still doesn't sleep through the night consistently and he'll pee through an overnight if he goes more than about 6-7 hours. But the Honest wipes are the best I've found. They're big, soft and they hold up well
