Re: Weekly Questions | First week of 2018!

  • So this may be something that happens all the time but I never noticed it but I can like see my pulse on my little mini bump. I was telling MH that I think it is the placenta and he said its probably just my pulse. I have a fundal (top) placenta if that makes a difference.

ST+Ms, can we talk about telling the first kid about the baby? I’ve tried to talk to my DD, who just turned 2, about mommy’s belly and a baby coming. Now she just tells me she’s a baby and wants to be cradled and rocked, so that didn’t work out.

I do think I will focus more decorating energy on her room than a nursery. We moved this and her room is still kind of blah, so I was going to redecorate her “big girl room” when she transitions to a bed (trying not to buy a new crib, but maybe she won’t be ready). She also has a doll she likes to take care of. Any other suggestions?

@krashke I don’t think it can be the placenta bc I can DEF see mine too (so weird), and my placenta is posterior. I think it’s just we have so much more blood now our pulse points are more pronounced.
  • @pupsicle23 I can't help you as a FTM and this is certainly a fine place to post your question, but you might get more responses on the ST+M check in thread. A new one was just posted.

  • First off, where I am it's super cold right now.

I went to stretch while getting dressed and one of my nipples cracked and bled a bit. I realized they were dry and I do put lotion on my boobs but guessing not enough on the nips.
While showing my husband {I had texted him about it, and it was more for reference} he said they looked super dry.

I've started putting coconut oil on the area {nip + areola even though that's not dry} but is this a concern I should bring up with my OB, and is there something else that could help better?
  • @pupsicle23 - I think at that age it's natural for your daughter to just want to be the baby still.  She probably doesn't really get what being a big sister means.  DS1 was 16 months old when DS2 arrived and we got this book, which he really liked for the first few months.  They have a sister version as well, which might help her understand what is happening and how things will change.

  • @MissKittyDanger - I've only had nipples dry out/crack from nursing, not from cold weather, but I assume a nipple cream or nipple butter would help, and if you plan to nurse you should have some around anyway.  Lots of moms like Earth Mama.

  • Anyone use SlingTV? We are looking to get rid of cable from our local company because it’s so ridiculously expensive. We would be using Xbox One for the app. Just wondering if it works well or any other things I should look into. (Already have Hulu and Netflix)

  • @mytinc my hands and feet typically get dry, but never nips - so I found it odd. I do plan on picking up cream because I'm going to try nursing. I'll check out Earth Mama, I've seen it around :)
  • @lisa2589 we got rid of cable about a year ago and got the amazon fire stick and we pay for directv now app (it’s like sling tv and all the others)- which is like 30 a month for mostly every channel I want. I don’t know if that works for the Xbox, but I think most of the cable cutting apps for tv are the same!
  • We were just evaluating Sling vs. Hulu Live TV yesterday @lisa2589 - While Hulu Live TV was more expensive ($39.99), it had more channels so we went with that.  Right after signing up I realized that my Roku wasn't new enough to handle the Live portion and our Smart TV (a Vizio) isn't smart enough either.  So both looked like just the basic Hulu vs the Live version.  If we don't figure out a work around within our 1 week trial (I ordered a newer Roku) we'll be canceling and trying Sling instead.  I'm just going to check equipment compatibly before signing up to anything again.

  • Thanks @mytinc and @boymama29! I had looked at the Hulu Live since I already have the basic but didn’t look like they had Disney (DD is obsessed with Mickey Mouse Clubhouse). I will have to check on the DirectTV Now.  I honestly don’t watch TV that much and I’m excited to cut some bills down!

  • When I was looking yesterday at Hulu Live TV it had both Disney and Disney Jr (same obsessions around here).  If you use Ebates when you sign up you get $25 cash back.  Here are the channels they carry @lisa2589.

@lisa258 we tried sling a while back and had a hard time using it. Other people in various parts of our neighborhood have also reported issues with slow streaming, so I think it depends where you are and what casting device you use. We were using chromecast. We have Hulu live and like it.

@mytinc @krashke thanks! I’ll check out that book. And, my last bmb had zero organization except tw Tuesday and fffc, so I’m learning!
  • @pupsicle23 We got DD (who was 26 mos. old when DS was born) a book, which I think helped. We read it at least twice a week for a few months, to get her used to the idea of helping take care of the baby.
We also started emphasizing play with baby dolls. DH and I would periodically hold one of her baby dolls and try to give positive reinforcement to DD while playing with her. We would pretend to feed the baby doll and change it, always praising her when she helped. We would pat the baby and say things like "Oh, we love babies, don't we?"
Sounds like you're on the right track, playing the Big Girl card, though. As she sees your belly grow, that might help, too.

  • @mytinc update: For your sake I hope Hulu live will work with your new Roku because I just signed onfoe the SlingTV free trial, and even with the $5 add on DVR it won’t let you record anything on Dis or Dis Jr. So looks like Hulu Live it will be for us too although a bit more expensive.

  • @pupsicle23 definitely play up the big girl part. My daughter 2.5 when my son was born and we constantly talked about how she was the big girl and how she was my helper. We talked it up so much, that she by the time he came, she loved him so much, she didn't mind sharing her spotlight. I did make sure to do things alone with just her though.
We also talk about how to care for the baby, "when the baby comes, they're going to cry a lot. How can we help them not cry? We can cuddle them, give them a paci.."
  • Anyone tried a saline nasal rinse/neti pot for pregnancy congestion? I don't have other cold symptoms so I'm pretty sure this is just pregnancy related. I know there are meds I can take but since I don't have others symptoms I was thinking of trying this first.
    DD born 6/21/2018

  • @elsie42 I don't use a neti pot, but I do love a good saline spray. It helps get all the gunky mucus out...blowing my nose after a couple of sprays in each nostril is SO satisfying. My nasal passages also tend to get really dry in the winter months, which can cause inflammation, and the saline spray helps with that, too.

I’ve been diffusing some eucalyptus eo to combat congestion this week and it’s been helping a ton.

@MissKittyDanger Lanolin is the best thing I've found for cracked dry lips and it's intended for use as a nipple balm. I find it 100x more effective than anything I've tried for super dry cracked lips. I'm assuming it will be great for nipples as well. You can buy the generic drugstore brand and it's just as good as the name brand stuff.

@pupsicle23 DS is really enjoying these 2 books "Waiting for Baby" and "My New Baby" both authored by Rachel Fuller. He's already a big brother (he is 21 months older than DD.) We did nothing to prepare him the first time because I figured he was too young to understand. Even this time (he's now 3) he doesn't care that much about talking about it with me but he loves the books. Not sure if it's preparing him subconsciously or something.
  • This may be TMI, but have any of you ladies experienced severe abdominal pain? I am 15 weeks and last night I had the most extreme right lower abdominal pain which was constant. It felt like I had a ton of gas built up in my stomach that I couldn't release. The pain literally kept me awake all night. If anyone has had this before and has any recommendations to help ease the pain, let me know! I am thinking it is gas build up/constipation. I am gonna try some miralax in the meantime.

  • @srb1028 sounds like bloating. I get it if I drink anything carbonated. I mostly keep it at bay by proactively taking a strong probiotic before 2pm (the bloating usually starts after that), avoiding anything carbonated, chewing my food really well, etc. Also sometimes I'll put like a tablespoon or two of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water (I like the taste... but you could do a shrub!), and I find that helps digestion too.
  • @pupsicle23 I am a FTM, but a friend told me her DD started regressing (started having frequent accidents and other behaviors) after they made a really big deal about being a big girl. Turns out it was scaring her and when they took it a bit slower she did better. Every kid is different though!
  • @lisa2589 we have sling tv instead of cable and have no issues. I may not be the very best person to speak on it as I am not a very big tv watcher at all. However, we never have a connection issue and my bf is more of a normal daily tv watcher and nfl redzone for more hours than I can handle on Sundays. It does take some getting used to but that's how I am for everything; switching from satellite to Comcast,  Comcast to Sling, etc.
  • @lisa2589We are Netflix only at home now and the local channels that come in over the antenna. Felt good to say goodbye to Comcast! Prior we did have Sling but ran into reliability issues where we are. I don't miss cable at all.

@srb1028 I agree with @doxiemoxie212, I had really horrible and painful bloating with constipation through first tri and it only went away when I eliminated dairy and upped my fiber. Never had these issues prior.

@elsie42 I just woke up at 4am because my nose was so congested and dry at the same time, it hurts! MH just found our saline nasal spray and I am going to start using. I've also been getting nosebleeds so I hope this helps and you get some relief too! I am so over this congestion.
  • @elsie42 I've used a neti pot off and on for years.  I need to pull it out now because I've been sick constantly, but it should help a lot with pregnancy congestion.

  • @pupsicle23 My DD is 6 so she gets the concept but I'm pretty worried about how she's going to react when she's not the only child anymore and also the only grandbaby on my side of the family. We've been playing up the "being a big helper" thing and also how many things she'll get to teach her baby brother which has her pretty excited. We've also signed her up for a "Hello Brother, Hello Sister" sibling class which is being offered along with all the childbirth prep classes at our hospital. It's a one hour class for kids ages 3-9. Might be worth seeing if there's anything like that available in your area!

  • @pupsicle23 I don't have any kids, but I am the eldest of 6. So I watched all my siblings adjust to not being the baby anymore. My baby brother just recently had this realization on Christmas. He was use to getting a crap TON of gifts for Christmas at my parent's and then leaving our grandparent's house with a car full of gifts. Well last year one of our cousins had twins, so they were not only the center of attention but got a ton of gifts and he left with 2 or 3 gifts (like the rest of us).  I'd suggest to make sure your first born still feels celebrated. At the baby shower (if she/ he attends, assuming you have one) make sure their is a couple gifts for him/her to open. Take them on private day outtings now & after the baby is born. Continue to make a big deal about their accomplishments.

  • @ramblebee @srb1028 I should add that my bloating was not accompanyies by any constipation (I’m vegetarian and eat a ton of vegetables so my fiber is always v high) — for me it’s just trapped gas.
  • @harveyabbey77 One thing I noticed that I think helped DD adjust to not being the baby anymore is that any time we visit other family, they make it a point to greet her first. For the first few months, they wouldn't even really acknowledge the baby until after they had loved on DD. DH and I each also try to have one-on-one time with her every day-even if it's just 10 minutes worth. She also gets really excited when she gets to go to the store or on special dates with us, without her brother.
  • @kfren That's a great idea!! My parents and in-laws would totally be on board with that too. We're planning to do as much one-on-one stuff as we can with DD after baby. Being off in the summer will be nice because she'll be off of school. We're still enrolling her in day camp through the local YMCA three days a week because they keep them so busy and she is a social butterfly so the interaction with other kids is a plus! But H works second shift so there'll be two mornings a week where H could hang with baby and DD and I could do story time at the library or have some quality momma-daughter time.

  • @srb1028 another option to try if it really is gas would be simethicone (it's what's in Gas-X and stuff like that).  It doesn't actually get absorbed in your body it just stays in your digestive tract so it's very safe for pregnancy.  I will say I have been having random pains in my abdomen pretty much my entire pregnancy (I'm a FTM and I'm 16 weeks today).  You seem to be pretty sure that yours is gas/constipation related but I never know what to make of mine, I think sometimes mine is gas also.  It's annoying though!
  • @taykc90 I definitely think mine is gas/constipation because the pain went away the next morning after I used the bathroom (sorry for TMI lol). I am going to pick up some gas x also; thanks for the recommendation. I seen it in the store when I bought miralax but was unsure if it was safe for pregnancy at that moment so I didn't buy any.  I agree that the pain is so annoying. When it first happened, I was convinced something was seriously wrong.

Do we have a symptoms thread that I can’t find?

Anyway - anyone else getting pretty consistent lower back pain the wraps around the front some? I’m hoping it’s just because I didn’t drink enough water today and it was my first day back at work. But it also reminds me of what I felt last time with DD when I had to go to triage

  • @sunshineandwhiskey I was just looking for the symptoms thread too. I don’t think we have one going right now.

I’ve had that wrap around back pain off and on for the last few weeks. I’ve just been foam rolling my lower back, hips and sides more than usual. It seems to help.

  • @pupsicle23 I’m a FTM, but my own parents did such a great job when my brother was born (I was 4), they let me name him, I remember feeling like I was involved in all the decisions and that he was my baby. As a result, whenever a friend or relative has their second baby, I usually start sending “Big sister/brother” packages during the pregnancy with a big exciting package with balloons for them at the time of birth. I’ll usually include a gift for them to share with the baby at that time. I usually don’t send anything else for the baby. I will also arrange to take the older sibling on an adventure to celebrate if that’s appropriate too. Doubly helpful since it gives parents some childcare. Your little one is super young, but I imagine the more she can be involved and the focus be on her not the babywhile ahe transitions to older sibling, the better. I know it helped 4 year old me feel that the baby was a positive thing in my life and I still have a special connection to my now 30 year old brother :)

I can’t help but feeling like one of those non parents who has all the advice about what to do as a parent, haha...I just love making the older sibling feel special. My friends and relatives have said it was something they didn’t necessarily have time to do in this frivolous way while they were looking after everything else. If there’s an Auntie or Friend who may be willing to do that for you, perhaps ask them, they may not think about it.
