Questions w/o 12/18

Thought I'd start a questions thread for this week, since I have a question. xo.

Re: Questions w/o 12/18

  • Ok so, for those of you doing both of these things: did you have both your 1st ultrasound and NT scan done close to each other? They're both ultrasounds right? I am wondering if people just do the NT scan to cut down on exposure.
  • Loading the player...
  • @DynamiteTrujillo I had an ultrasound at 6 weeks, I'm having one tomorrow (9w6d) and I'll be having the NT ultrasound in a couple weeks. Ultrasounds are extraordinarily safe so I have no concerns. With my twins I lost count of the number of ultrasounds we had (it was north of 10 for sure).

That said, unless you're unsure of your dates or have bleeding or some other reason for an early ultrasound, it's not necessary to have one before the NT scan.

  • Mine where weeks apart. NT scan was with a different tech so i wouldn’t consider it a regular check up. With my son i got scans pretty often so not sure if exposure is an issue. At least my doc didn’t seem concerned. I’ve never googled it either.
  • @DynamiteTrujillo I think it depends on when you had your first visit and whether you've had any issues. Many of the women who have had early scan have or have had an issue of some sort be it a previous loss, spotting/cramping, or are high risk etc. Some doctors don't even do a dating ultrasound, and I'm sure insurance coverage and cost plays a factor for some women. I've never heard u/s exposure being an issue, but I've also never looked into it.
The NT scan IS just an u/s but there's bloodwork that accompanies it too, and I'm sure it's done on a better machine than what is in most doctors offices.
  • Fourth baby, and I've never even been offered a NT.

  • I had my dating US done at 8 weeks and will now have my NT done at 12 tomorrow. as far as exposure i figure I only have 3 scans in total for my pregnancy so exposure isn't overly a concern.

@TheQuietThings I think it depends on the dr. I was never offered the harmony or more expensive genetic testing but they do offer the NT to help with precautions if wanted

  • @TheQuietThings My doctor said NT scans are out-dated and not necessary anymore, but everyone on here seems to be getting them! Also no genetic testing until the AFP tetra at 16 weeks, unless I want to pay for the cell-free DNA test, but I am not considered high risk for genetic issues. I'd rather just do all the tests, but I'm trying not to worry about it!
  • @ckmb_knottie that's interesting your doc said they were outdated! Here the only other one I could get is the Harmony, and she said it was good for some things but that the NT scan along with blood work (I can't remember the type of screening this is called right now) was good at picking up some things Harmony didn't, although I can't remember what they are right now.
  • @SmashJam the NIPT that are available cannot show neural tube defects, those can only be seen on ultrasound (eg spina bifida or anancephaly). NIPT isn’t really available in Canada yet unless I want to shell out $800 which I do not lol.

  • I don't know a single person IRL who has had one, tbh.  Dating ultrasounds,

  • Thanks for the input everyone! I have a dating US on Jan 2, just because I've had a history of miscarriage and it would make me feel better, and I'm pretty sure I will be getting the NT scan done, but won't appoint for it until after my 1st US. It seems like it'll be fine to do both. Thanks again!
  • @DynamiteTrujillo NT scans are done between 11-13 weeks. Your first US will depend on the doctor. Mine gave me one at 6 weeks because I had a chemical pregnancy last year and was very nervous about things going wrong. I paid a pretty penny for it, because it was not necessary technically, so I learned my lesson! He then gave me one at 10w, and the NT will be at 12.5 w for me.
In California there's a screening program that is offered and the state actually forces health insurance companies to pay for them. I'm not sure if it's covered only if you're over 35 but I think it's regardless. My blood test I did before the NT will probably cost us some out of pocket because we elected to find out the gender. At the moment I'm trying to be oblivious about cost and just waiting for bills to arrive, lol.
  • My OB does the dating ultrasound for me because I have a history if very irregular periods and and with my first I was over week off the estimated dd from my LMP. this one is also off so she does it to get a more accurate due date

  • I have a question for any nursing mommas or really just any of y’all that have input lol So I am 10w2d and still nursing my two year old, I noticed yesterday that my supply is drying up and I’m pretty sad about it. I thought it didn’t dry up until much later! Has anyone had their supply dry up this early?

  • @TheQuietThings @ckmb_knottie Ya'll just made me feel a little better, because I haven't been offered a NT scan either. I was starting to worry that I was the only person not getting one.
  • It’s a little early for this, but I like to plan ahead :) Any moms out there have a toddler under 3 and newborn twins? I’m looking for a stroller that my son can ride (sit n stand style) and has two places for car seats. What’s your favorite and why?
  • @powellgirl we had a stroller spotlight a couple weeks back, you should be able to find it in the search- lots of information! There was a double stroller thread even further back too with a lot of responses. I think I'm going to look into one of those attachable kickboards to hook onto our single stroller before I decide if I want to bite the bullet and get a double. My son will be 3 when baby comes, so I'm still on the fence.
  • @acunamatada sorry, I must have missed those threads! Sometimes the search doesn’t work for me (mobile user). I’ll try to check those out!
  • @powellgirl No need to apologize- I didn't mean for that to come off as a redirection at all, you totally asked this question in the right place- there's just so much info in those threads I had to mention it.
  • @kmac103 I am nursing my 13 month old and am 10w. I only nurse off one side twice a day, but I haven’t noticed a drop in supply yet. I thought it was a second tri thing but as with all things pregnancy, I’m sure it varies by woman as well as pregnancy! I’m sure that’s disappointing though.

  • Have any other STM+ moms who have had a c section before been told they are no longer a candidate for induction? I found out if I go past due I cant have a vbac if I get to 41 and will need to have a repeat c section

@lindsayleigh1989 cervical ripeners are contraindicated in a VBAC because they increase the risk of uterine rupture. Some providers will still do membrane sweeps, Foley bulb inductions, AROM and/or low dose pitocin. Can you get a second opinion?

  • I don't even know what an NT scan is, and this is my 3rd baby. :/

That being said, if all things are looking good, I will get a dating US at my first appointment and another US around 20 weeks.

  • @comealongponds gotcha that makes sense! she said she will still do a membrane sweep if needed but just wont do the induction meds because of the risk and with me wanting to avoid an emergency c section.

  • @lindsayleigh1989 My doctor told me the same exact thing today so it must be pretty normal. I was surprised too though. She’s also trying to talk me out of the vbac already which makes me sad.
  • @lindsayleigh1989 Was your Dr open to VBAC? How did the convo go? Sorry if I missed it in another thread.
  • I wasn’t considering a vbac at all but dr brought it up in last appointment that she would support it if i was interested but then she went on to list a bunch of scary things that idk if it was for discouragement or just real facts. I’m still leaning towards another scheduled c section.
@lindsayleigh1989 i hope your doctor opens up more on your options and provide reassurance sooner rather than later. Having to wait till later sucks especially if your a planner.
  • My doctor is in full support of VBAC. She says the more vaginal births you have, the better. But she also said she will not induce for a VBAC. She said I will have to go into labor naturally, otherwise we need to do another section.
