GTKY True Crime *TW violence* 12/12

Ok, this is admittedly a weird GTKY, but there have been a ton of TV specials on it lately, and I'm curious as to everyone's opinion.  Do you think Scott Peterson is guilty?  I put a TW on this since it deals with a pregnant woman.  I apologize if the TW came too late for any of you.

Oh, then we'll see you in a few days!! ::waves::  LOL  I figured there wouldn't be too many other people that are as obsessed with true crime as I am (but maybe one or two), but thought most of us are at least old enough to remember hearing about it in the news.
ETA @lincbeesmom, I didn't, but heard from a lot of people how good it was.  One of my good friends watched it and was telling me how much she learned from that show that she didn't remember hearing about when it happened.  She was only like, 6, when it happened though, so I wasn't surprised.  But I should see if I can find it on netflix or demand or something.

  • Excited to look this up! I’ve recently gotten into true crime and I love a good rabbit hole.
  • Yes! His behavior screamed guilty to me!

@desertdweller21, I totally agree, but if you're on the jury you can't convict someone on their behavior.  I think the biggest (and possibly only) thing that makes me hesitate is that according to the show I was watching the other day, 7 other pregnant women disappeared from that same area in a certain amount of years (I can't remember the exact number, but it was a "short" amount of time-a few years, maybe?) and one of them-disappeared in May 2002, so seven months before Laci-was also found in the SF Bay as just a torso.

  • @sandbar517 ok I was totally thinking guilty until I read your comment about the other pregnant women. Now I’m not sure.

Btw I LOVED the OJ series. It was really well done.
  • I had never heard about the other pregnant women!

It doesn’t seem like they had any HARD EVIDENCE so this case is definitely tough.

  • @bjkay22 Exactly.  But when I was just trying to look it up to see if I could find the exact numbers, there's almost nothing about it online.  So I feel like it was one of those situations where they didn't realize all that was going on until after the fact.  I have to admit after watching Making a Murderer, I've totally changed my opinion on the justice system, and the amount of innocent people in prison for something they didn't do.  So while my gut still says he's guilty, I'm glad I didn't have to be on the jury and make that decision.

  • @sandbar517 yeah I don’t think I could have effectively served on that jury. I would have wanted to say guilty because of his terrible personality alone. Even though cheating doesn’t equal murder, I wouldn’t have been about to get past his “whatever” atttide.

I havw no yet watched Making a Murderer. I’ve always debated if it would freak me out too much.
  • Obviously, to follow that up with the fact that he was having an affair and had told Amber that he had "lost his wife" less than a month before she actually disappeared, and then was calling her and telling her he was in Europe for New Year's when he was in fact at Laci's vigil speaks volumes.  I also learned yesterday that Amber's birthday is Feb 10th, the same day as Laci's due date, and he was on the phone with Amber all day, leaving her a gift hidden under a bush at a hospital near her apartment.  Super shady.  That just seems too suspicious to me.  I can't imagine if any of us went missing that our innocent SOs would be doing stuff like that on our due dates.

  • @bjkay22 I didn't find Making a Murderer freaky at all, unless you consider having a LOT of confidence in the justice system removed, then yes-it's freaky as hell.

  • Guilty, no doubt about it.
  • He totally is guilty.

+1 for loving the OJ series and Making a Murderer.

The OJ case has always been of interest to me because we live in SoCal. Ron Goldman’s family lives in our LA suburb and we used to see OJ’s kids and Nicole’s parents when we would be at the beach with my grandparents.

@mileswithmyles how interesting! I’m kinda that way with the horrifying Jon Benét Ramsey case. The mother was from my home town so I always feel like that makes everyone from my town super interested in that case.

Edit to change is to was. She died of ovarian cancer a few years back
  • I've always thought guilty for sure. I really want to watch this now!

Another +1 for Making a Murderer and OJ mini series, loved both.
  • @desertdweller21 I absolutely agree.  A lot of people on his defense team claim the police never had any other suspects, and ignored other tips that were brought in (6 eyewitnesses that say they saw Laci walking her dog after Scott left, the stuff about other pregnant women disappearing), but I would be interested to find out some of the behind the scenes stuff-like seeing the transcripts of other interviews, etc  And weren't there any cameras at neighbors' houses, traffic intersections or stores in the area that may have gotten some video??  Scott's behavior before, during and after is extremely suspect, and it would take some really compelling evidence of those other tips to get me to change my mind.  But I feel like all those other tips weren't made public enough for me to completely make up my mind!!!  I'm totally fascinated by this kind of stuff, and now I'm pretty sure I'm not getting any work done today LOL

  • I can't let myself get into this stuff for my own anxiety, but where is he now? Did they find him guilty?
  • Yes!  The JonBenet Ramsey case is another one that I could watch hours upon hours of TV specials about.  The OJ case never caught my interest AS much as the others, not sure why.....

@cups4 guilty and on death row in a California prison. Actually guilty of first degree for the wife and second degree for the baby.
  • Good ole' San Quentin on death row.
  • @sandbar517 sometimes I think it’s a “LA thing” to be super interested in it. My mom was glued to the TV every day watching the trial. And I remember we were at Disneyworld when the verdict came out and were glad we weren’t at home because LA was such a shit show after he was found not guilty.
  • @cups4, good point.  I added a TW in case people have a hard time discussing a case like this right now.  Sorry if I hurt anyone, it was totally unintentional!

  • @sandbar517  CBS had a special on JBR.  I remember coworkers saying how they thought it was her brother.
  • oh girl, you're good!!! @sandbar517, I just know I couldn't watch the show, I know the story and was still curious about the end result!
  • @cups4 @sandbar517 yeah I’m thinking it was the brother. Regardless of who did it, the parents were hiding it because they clearly knew who did it. IMHO.
  • @mileswithmyles it is definitely one of those "where were you when this happened" moments, I think.  I was 13 when it all happened, and the whole school stopped what they were doing to watch the verdict.  I guess after the fact it just didn't keep my interest.  The glove is interesting, but not enough to make me doubt his guilt, I guess.
@cups4 That whole case is still such a huge mystery, and I think the brother is a really good suspect, but I've seen some evidence that made me sure he couldn't have done it.  Maybe that one can be the GTKY for next week  :D

  • @cups4 there was a cbs special last year around this time, I believe, where the lead investigators pointed to Burke.  It was a pretty convincing theory, but I don't think we will ever know what really happened there.
  • @cups4 duh, you mentioned the CBS special.  I obviously can't read.
  • Did anyone watch the Menendez Brothers Law and Order?  It was pretty good.
  • Yeah, last year was the 20th anniversary of JBR, and this year is the 15th for Laci, both so close to Christmas, so it makes sense that they're making specials about them again.  As for the brother, I think he's definitely weird, but how much of that is from his personality and how much of it is from having your sister murdered on Christmas Day when you were only what, 8? 9?  and then dealing with the absolute media shit storm that happened as a result.  I think it would f up even the most normal of us.  My gut says the brother didn't do it, as good of a suspect he seems to be, the details of the crime just don't seem to "fit" for me.

  • @mileswithmyles, I haven't.  Another one that I would probably get really into if I watched anything about it, it just never caught my interest as much as the other ones we've been talking about on here for some reason.

  • Love this thread!

I think Scott Peterson is guilty
    OJ is guilty
and JBR case is super fascinating, need to look into the details more....but, I always figured it was someone in the family.
  • @kpc0914 I was discussing this thread with one of my friends/coworkers over lunch, and we felt the same way about JBR.  However, there was DNA found at the scene that didn't match anyone in the home, so I feel like that supports the theories that her parents and brother are/were innocent and there had to have been someone from outside the home that had at least SOMETHING to do with it.

  • The Petersons were from my hometown so it was talked about constantly. Some of my relatives knew them and all of us believe he's guilty.

The OJ series was so good and I thought the Menedez Series was amazing too though I still don't know what I'd do with them if I were on that jury. Holy crap that's some crazy stuff.

I think Scott Peterson is guilty. JBR was such a sad story :( I would love to know who it was. Her brother is weird but I don't think it was him - this is one I would like to have seen solved.
Casey Anthony was a case I followed closely; it was terrible and I 100% believe she is guilty it really bothered me that she got off.
