Thank you everyone for the feedback. I really appriciate it. I have tried to steer her towards experiences she could have with the kids as gifts instead, and she was going to take them all to a musical and then switched to the instruments thing. She has also been given a list of items the kids asked for, and spoke with them when she was hear last at Thanksgiving. She comes fairly often - this will be her 5th or 6th trip back this year, so just giving the instruments away would not be a good solution, as she would want to see them when she came (she accuses me of throwing things away all the time and therefore not valuing $).
The tantrum thing is new, which is what I think is throwing me in a loop, and is stressing me out. I think I'm just going to let her do whatever she wants, but not give her permission to buy the instruments. If she does it anyways, not much i can do, and if she chooses to sulk its her choice.
@eggplantface that is what my doctor and the med strident did at my last appointment. It was so weird they were just like swishing my stomach in all the different directions.
@mamaof5already The tantrum thing. It reminds me of how my grandmother started to go with dementia years ago. It may be worth paying attention to. Just a thought. I hate to think that anyone else would have to experience what I’ve had to with my grandmother but I just wanted to throw it out there just in case.

Thanks. I'll keep an eye out for that. Her assistant art hone and i check in with each other twice a week because she has started exhibiting of behaviors. I don't think dementia is anything either of us considered. We have discussed Alzheimer's and general senility.
@mamaof5already My mother had tantrums before but they were few and far between. After she had a stroke and right before she was officially diagnosed with Parkinson's and dementia, she lost what little filter she had and became unbearable. It was hard to deal with and i was her verbal punching bag. Definitely not something I'd wish on anyone.

I teach. Y’all know that. Well there is thisnkid that skips my class multiple times a week and when he comes to class sits with his feet up in the back and on his phone. I ignore him bc it’s not worth it and he’s mom is a treat as well to the point that we all refuse to even communicate with her. Well. They are allowing him a spot on the basketball team. Like wtf!? How can he fail nearly every class, skip classes and still be permitted to play? I’m so over. I told the whole team they don’t need to get their teacher rec forms or grade forms filled out because it’s not fair since they all aren’t being held to the same standards. I’m so ready for maternity leave and place s my text messages and emails on silent.
Holy crap it legitimately snowed in south Louisiana today!! The whole town is shut down because no one knows how to drive in this and the city owns 3 salt trucks lol. Chuck has never seen snow before. He loved it!!

Were you one of the teachers who said you're not allowed to give zeros for not doing work? That they at least get a 50 no matter what? Will he be passed to the next grade regardless of his behavior? A story just broke in DC in which an audit of a high school revealed that half of the graduating seniors from 2017 missed three months of school in their last year. But the school passed them anyway because passing them gets the school more funding. I imagine having half the senior class return to repeat the year also puts a burden on school resources. It's just sad all around.

That's how it is when Washington state gets snow. We shut down and freak out- even just a dusting.. Apparently we are anticipating snowmeggedin this year.
They're predicting 2-3 inches of snow for DC tomorrow from this front, although they keep saying that's more likely south/east of the city. But of course, CUE PANIC!!! I'll be happy if all this cold and snow means we'll have a cold Christmas day; last year's 70 degrees and balmy on Christmas was miserable.

@smorzandoj that's why I could never teach. That's total BS.
@eggplantface if it's the same system we're getting you should get a lot of snow. They always say it's going to snow here but it never sticks. It's been snowing for hours and they said it will be around 3 inches of accumulation. It usually melts as soon as it hits the ground.
Just catching up! @mamaof5already I'm sorry. That does not sound like a very merry xmas at all! @eggplantface The dr felt my belly last time, too, but she also measured it. So weird.
@eggplantface I'm in a nothing below 50% district. @smorzandoj does your school get Title 9 funding? I THINK with Title 9, the students have to be passing all of their classes in order to play on sports teams. I know of a team in a charter school that promises all seniors on the basketball team will start, regardless of grades or athletic ability, as motivation to keep the kids in school. Again, that's a charter school and a high school, though.
As a FTM non-teacher, all these stories are making me fear for the kiddo's future education lol. Not that I won't tiger mom him at home, but just the environment of what's acceptable by the school (obvs not by all teachers) is concerning.
I hope it snows this weekend, though I hope it starts after our matinee show in DC, lol. It'll also be our first snow w/ our new-to-us SUV so that'll be neat to test out too. If it really snows...
@chucksmom15 How exciting for Chuck! It’ll be our little Willow’s first season of snow in colorado. She’s in for a treat... although, we haven’t seen any accumulation of snow at all here yet. Texas has gotten more snow than we have right now!

Just got an email from the college about finishing my degree. They misquoted me the price of the class and say I don’t qualify for the “automatically qualify” scholarship they advertised.

@eggplantface I was the (former) teacher who brought up the 50 is the lowest grade you can give thing. I worked with middle schoolers in one of the highest need/lowest performing districts in the state of MA. MA has the number 1 rated schools in all the US but even still... a lot of the same BS as @smorzandoj is describing.
I went to a private school in an urban area when I was in school and we had a ton of football and basketball players who were allowed to play even if their grades were terrible. It wasn’t right or fair but my school wanted to win and have trophies to get more kids to go there. It’s all about keeping up appearances and reputation. There is zero accountability in some school systems and it really depends on your administrator. There are good administrators out there but also a lot of bad ones. It’s frustrating when a kid is both low performing and badly behaved and isn’t at least trying to change those things. The only thing that may have happened is that the student struck some kind of “deal” with the coach/principal and will at least not be disruptive in your class.
This is one of many reasons I stopped teaching this year but I truly feel for those still in the classroom dealing with these kids of things. Somewhere along the way, the inmates started running the asylum and everyone is so afraid of losing their job by saying no to students that the kids suffer, the educators suffer and so on and so forth.
I'm so sorry so many of you have had these bad experiences. I've worked in title I schools in Northern Virginia since I started teaching 5 years ago and I've not experienced that level of frustration and lack of trust in my professional judgment. It really opens my eyes to other experiences in the education system - and makes me nervous to leave!
...And speaking of leaving and teaching ... do we have any PA teachers here? If so, I have some questions as I'm navigating the process of transferring my VA license to PA.

I can give zeros. BUT at the end of the quarter no one can earn below a 50% which is irritating. Oh and he will pass to the next grade. No doubt in my mind.

@caitb13 PA teacher here (for the last 16+ years). Feel free to PM me with any questions! @amb929 I've been teaching for 16 years in public schools and it is with a bittersweet feeling that I will be using the baby's birth as a chance to transition to a new profession. This is not the job I signed up for when I started.

No response necessary @smorzandoj Just putting it out there I gave an exam today and stopped in the middle of grading to create a countdown calendar, because it was THAT good.
