GTKY: Baby Names You Won't Use for Silly Reasons

Was there a Chris in your 3rd grade class who was mean to you once so now you just can't name a kid Chris? A reality TV star whose name you used to like but now the thought of it is ruined for you? Share a name (or two or three) that you think you'd like otherwise, but you just can't use for somewhat silly reasons.

  • I love the name Ethan but when my ex and I were serious and talked marriage/kids it was our boy name.  I could never use it now.

Between my exboyfriends and DH's large group of close male friends, we're out a lot of "normal" boy names that we'd otherwise like - David, Greg, James, Andrew, etc. Maybe we'll end up with all daughters so we never have to deal with finding a boy name, lol.
  • As a teacher, I feel like my list is forever long haha
#1 Josh(ua) - Both of my previous BF, FH were named this
#2 Diane - My mothers name (and any other name on that side of the family)
    #3 Anything with an apostrophe
    #4 Anything with a hyphen
    #5 Ryder, Reece, Riley
    #6 Sara(h) - My name  :D
#7 Elsa (Loved this name for a girl, but then Frozen came around)

  • @sunshineandwhiskey one of my cousins named her daughter Elsa and then Frozen came out probably 3 years later. I think her daughter finds it fun, she has gone as Elsa for Halloween many times but if I was her mom I would be pretty pissed lol.

  • @sunshineandwhiskey I always feel bad for teachers when it comes to trying to name their own kids!!  I feel like every year another name would be ruined by some little brat.

I have a very Italian last name that included a slang word for vagina (Thanks DH). So a lot of names are off the table. We love Lucia for DD but knew kids would call her Loose *vagina slang*.

@sunshineandwhiskey I totally agree about not apostrophes and hyphens.

  • I am turned off by a name automatically if I've met someone with that name. Its like my association to the name goes directly to that person and it's all I can think about with that name. Makes it kind of tough, but I am all set on a girls name. Struggling much more on the boy front.
  • DH has 3 sisters, with a total of 10 kids between them so that knocks out a ton of names. And some of the names I love are his sister's names so those are out too.
I definitely prefer classical names, so I never usually have to worry too much about someone I know having the name I want.
  • Some names I love but can't use because they're my ex's names:

    Patrick
    Nicholas

I also have a large family (30 first cousins, several with kids of their own) and refuse to use a name that's already been taken by someone else.  That really narrows what's left.

    Third Son - due June 9, 2018
  • I would love to honour my Scandinavian heritage (Swedish mother), and I have particular affinity for some of the names of Old Norse origin. One of my favourites was Siri. Obviously can't use it as most people would probably wonder why I named my kid after the Apple AI... :/

  • My husband's name and my name both start with "L" so I don't want to name at least our first born with an "L" name because then people will think we're trying to be like the Kardashians or something lol. But I do love the name Luke and would totally use it for a second/third/etc baby after one child already has a different initial.
    DD born 6/21/2018
    DS born 9/24/2020
  • Our last name starts with L and DH hates the double L- so all L names are off the table.  I'm also a fan of Luke (and Liam) but not for us.
Also from a big family, and DH and I met in our 30s- so there are lots of ex's names we can use.
DH likes Lane- but my cousin's daughter is Delaney- so that's out.
He also likes Shannon (for a boy) but my cousin is Shannon (and a girl).
Another cousin's daughter is Flynne and we really like Finnegan (and I love Griffin) but we wouldn't want to use Finn as a nickname with Flynne being so similar (might do it anyway though).
There are more Seans, Megans and Matts in my family than is okay.  All are out.
There are also a few Ryans and Brians- too similar sounding to use either again.
DH's family is full of Chris's- all female and none are the same name- Christies, Christines, Kristens, ect.
My ex is James- and DH hates him- so that's a no.
    DD's name starts with R- so I don't want any R names . (too Kardashian/ Duggars)

We will have to bring back the name thread that we started a few weeks ago now that people are finding out the sex.  I'm already looking at this no list and thinking what names are left?! haha.

  • Being a teacher has made so many names ruled out!  I don't want any A name because DD1 is an A name.  I came from an all J family and always thought it was silly.  My husband's weird thing is that we can't use any names that could also be a last night.  So a name like Carter, for example, is a no.
  • Some of my favorite boy names are some of DH’s good friends names- Jaden, Cole and Jared. It was definitely easier coming up with girl names last time around.

  • @jsl82 @krashke maybe we could do a thread in a few months? But until then maybe a regular name status question could be added to one (or more) of our check ins? Is that crazy? Just seems easier to me in smaller groups at first? But maybe I’m alone. I also know what we’re naming this munchkin so maybe I shouldn’t get a say lol.
  • Kay.

Its a family name, and it would honor my aunt (who raised me like her daughter).

But it I had just one awful bully of a boss for half a year named Kay and now I can never ever bring myself to use that name.

  • Another  (former) teacher here.  My first class had a Kaden, Brayden and 2 Jaidens...and they were all challenging in their own ways. Haha...I wouldn't use any of those, but I do really like Aiden.

I really love Emmerson for a girl, but my SIL is due in January and using Emery.

Our last name is only 1 syllable so I dont like the way most 1 syllable names sound with it. There are a few of those that I like, but they're out.
  • @dinodna3 I am sorry about your last name causing issues, but the phrase “loose *vagina slang*” is literally making me cackle in public.

I can’t figure out how to communicate the problems we have with naming children without actually saying what my last name is! It’s really
common, but still. Who knows which of you are internet creeps.  ;)

  • Ok, DH seriously likes Elsa for a girl. He has a reason other than the movie but he also likes the movie and he doesn't think it would be cheesy to name our child after a DISNEY PRINCESS.
  • I love the name Lucille and call her Lucy. But my name is Lacey and that would just be too weird.

Also, my husband's last name (which the kids will have) is Spanish and it makes it so hard to find a name that sounds good with it. Of course, MH wants to name them after Spanish Soccer stars, if they are boys...so there's that.

  • I was getting into the idea of Belle for a girl (MH said if it was a boy we could him Beast lol), but once I said it out loud I realized that it's rhymey with our last name that ends in -el.  Bummer!

I have so many names that I can't use because of cousins' or friends' kids. Olivia was my number one choice for forever, but my cousin took it a few years ago.

The one name that we vetoed for a random reason is Juniper. We both really liked it, but when we realized the obvious nickname would be June, we decided not to. First, I'm not a huge fan of June, but also I thought it would be too weird to have a June born in June.

  • @krashke lol I also immediately thought of Darby because we had one Darby at work, and then suddenly had a BUNCH (which is weird; company wasn't that big), and then we also got a Darcy. lol lol
  • Katherine. I love the name and it's a family name but my great grandma was so dang mean I couldn't name my child that.

Many names are ruined bc I'm a pre school teacher.

    Nothing with a P b/c last name is a P.

DH says no C bc our DD is a C name.

  • This is funny bc before we knew the sex I posted stocking with the girl name and boy name. The boy name was just my DH's name III, while the girl name was Madison Jewel. And my ex of 4 years name is MJS. One of our (me & the ex) old mutual friends asked why Madison Jewel, I believe she was implying why would you name your daughter so closely to your ex's initials. I told her Madison has been my future daughters name since 7th grade (my entire family & close friends know this) and Jewel in honor of my husband's late uncle who we can't use his name for a boy bc my husband (and his dad) doesn't have a middle name so he doesn't want his sons to have a middle name either. But I knew someone would try to put 2 & 2 together. But IDC he doesn't eliminate my future daughter's name.

Biggest eliminator of a name for me was the potential nick name. Nick names are very important in my family.

  • DH and I try to pay attention to what initials spell. For instance, before she married, my grandmother's spelled WEE which is cute. Turn that around though, you don't want your initials to spell EEW.

  • We don’t do names that have been in the top 50 in the last 50 years. We also tie family into our children’s name. We really like Theodore for the current bump, but it’s predicted to sky rocket in popularity next year. So I’m really hoping it’s a girl. Maeleigh (a combination of a great Grandma and his sisters name) Torrey (my moms maiden name) Anne (several aunts have this middle name. Our son is named after our brothers middle names, so two middles, which is why we are going with two again.
  • I love the name Quinn but can't use it bc it's too similar in sound to our last name.
  • I’ve always loved the name Asher, but it’s too close to my sil’s name.

Also, my dad has always been a huge G n’ R fan and wanted to name me Axle had I been a boy, but my grandparents flipped. I always wanted to name my child that, for my dad, but I think my mil would actually disown me  :#

  • I couldn’t name a girl Ruth because of that Friends episode where they realize a baby with that name would be called BABY RUTH lol. Also I can’t use any names that my friends have named their pets which includes Ally, Mia, Lucy, Charlie, Sadie, Mazzy, Cooper, and several others.

I could get excited about a new name thread after DH and I find out the sex. I’m obsessed right now with boy names so intuition tells me we are having a boy but DH thinks it’s a girl.
  • edited December 2017
@bkrahn I think Axle is cute and know one little boy named that. At least it’s not over used but you have to decide on spelling Axel vs. Axle.

@doxiemoxie212 my boss has the initials ELF!
  • Thad. Living in the south all you’re going to get is “Thayad.” I was acquainted with a girl who named her son Thad. It was “No, Thayad!” and “Stop, Thayad!” Yikes. Some names just aren’t cute with a southern accent.

  • @doxiemoxie212 @krashke bringing back this week old post as both of you expressed interest in creating new name boards, since the original was out of date.  Between the suggestions for smaller name boards and the one off boards (smh- when did we become July?) I thought we might want to do 3 different name boards starting in January (as most of us will know the sex around 20 weeks if we don't already).

    Boy Names
    Girl Names
Sibling Names- for the STM+ and MOMs

I figured this would help people looking for additional names while keeping the boards from going one- off.  Would love to know everyone's thoughts.

  • @jsl82 maybe let's just add one thread for people looking for letter-specific names? lol I think that would cover all the potential themes...
  • I can't think of any names we can't use for "omg I hate this person" but more like "can't use it because it's popular/someone else"

Jack/Jaclyn are super popular. Originally it was going to be a first name, but we've moved it to middle name because of popularity.

DO YOU KNOW HOW HARD IT IS TO FIND A FIRST NAME THAT GIVES FLOW TO JACK!?
We've decided on girl name if it is a she - Michelle Jaclyn.
