Weekly Questions (Nov. 19)

Re: Weekly Questions (Nov. 19)

  • @doxiemoxie212 as I remember it the monthly appointments are all basically the same.  Boring and pretty quick.  My doctor did my blood pressure, tested my urine for protein, weighed me, found the hb with the doppler, and answered any questions I had.  Around 20 weeks I went to MFM for my anatomy scan and around 26 weeks I did the glucose test.  I have problems with my thyroid, so I have blood work done monthly as well- but typically have my blood work done between appointments so I have my results during my appointment.  Around 36 weeks there is the test from Group B Strep and around 40 weeks you have the baby.  All of the in between appointments are a blur of sameness.

DH lost his job when I was 11 weeks with DD and we were worried about not having insurance for a month around 20 weeks (I can't remember if we thought we might be without the month before or after my anatomy scan) but my doctor said alot of her patient travel abroad to see family around 20 weeks... and miss a monthly appointment.  Schedule your 16 week appointment for a time that works best for you- the only thing you will miss is hearing the HB (which before you can feel the kicks it's the only sign that everything is okay).

@TravelingCouple +1 to the straw!  I don't know why but straws help.

  • So I called and if I wait until 18+4, I get to have my anatomy scan then instead of at 20 weeks. If I do my appt at 15+4, I have to wait until 20 weeks. Does this change anyone’s opinions? :-/
  • @doxiemoxie212 Personally, I prefer to have the anatomy scan close to 20 weeks, because it gives you the best view of all the little things you need to see (like heart and brain stuff). Not that you can't do it at 18...my OB just likes to do them close to 20.

@travelingcouple I've been having trouble too.  I've been drinking unsweetened natural coconut water a lot to substitute.  That stuff is freaking delicious.

@doxiemoxie212 My 16ish week appointment is just a routine checkup where they check my pee and my stats.

  • @TravelingCouple this stuff is life for me:
  • Is it okay if I spend some more time here? my due date is 7/3/17 but if I decide to have a repeat c section I will be a June mama.

I apologize if this has been asked before. my search function is acting up tonight and not working. I had an emergency c ssction with my first and had to be fully knocked out for it. I was wondering if there were any stm or repeat moms who had a planned c section before and what that experience was like? did you feel like you were present for the birth? did your milk supply come in okay? thanks

  • @lindsayleigh1989 check out the Birth Plans post - a lot of STM have posted their birth experience and I think there are some c section mommas. AFM - I had a legit scheduled section due to DD being breech and I feel like I didn’t miss out on any aspect of her birth other than I don’t know what a contraction feels like. It was smooth, the nurses were able to talk me through everything, I saw her almost immediately after she was born since the baby station was in my view, and I got to hold her within 15 minutes of them starting. My milk came in with a vengeance too. I had to ask to pump my second night there. Overall I would most definitely do it all again - which is why I’m waivering so much on a VBAC. If you have other questions or wanna talk more in-depth feel free to PM

  • @lindsayleigh1989 I wasn't scheduled but I had a csection. I felt very present during the whole thing. It was actually a crazy sensation to be honest. DH was able to go watch them clean him up and he carried him straight over so I could see him. I believe my arms were strapped the whole time but I've seen other moms/hospitals let one arm free to be able to hug baby etc.
my milk supply never really came in. I don't blame the section though. Think it was just me.

  • @doxiemoxie212 my 16 week appointment is actually at 15+5. I would be fine doing it at 18 too if I were you. I was told that I could make my appointments 4-6 weeks apart if I wanted. My anatomy scan is at 18 weeks (when my office schedules it) because there is always the chance you have to go back if the baby doesn’t cooperate (and they want to get you in before 20 for the second scan).
  • @doxiemoxie212 - my 16 week apt (was this way with my 1st as well) will just be with the nurse doing general intake info.  No doc...maaaayyybe the Doppler and I'm sure basic vitals.  With the exception of the 20 week most all apts literally take 10 minutes...sit in the waiting room longer.  My doc knows I drive about 40 mins to get there (I used to live close and just never changed practices) and he will skip some appointments and/or space them out (pending everything is going well) to save me the trouble.

TLDR: Don't sweat it either way...it'll be an uneventful appointment

  • Is the NT scan transvaginal? I’m 12+4. I have mine today, and I’m wondering if I need to rethink my grooming (I know I know they don’t care, but I do lol).

    @doxiemoxie212 Nope, it’s external.

ETA: they might have you take your pants off though because the baby is still pretty low.

  • @doxiemoxie212 while it is typically external, they ended up doing an internal with my DD because of her position.  That said, if they do an internal they don’t look - they give you the wand and have you insert it then they take over.
  • @Miz_Liz ah so maybe I’ll remove the winter coat from my legs but not my giny;)
  • @doxiemoxie212 that’s what I would do :)  Hopefully baby will cooperate and it will be external only, but better safe than sorry!
  • @Miz_Liz they gave you the wand to insert??? That seems really odd to me. I had two transvaginal u/s already, one with just the portable machine and one when they did the dating scan, and both times they just put the gel/lube on it and put it in there. I think I would have looked at them with two heads if they told me to insert it. And TBH it is probably easier for them from that angle.

  • @krashke when I’ve had tv us they always have me insert it and then they wiggle it around from there. I laughed the first time, and they said “it makes women more comfortable.” Really? Lol
  • @doxiemoxie212 that is so odd! I don't get why it would make you feel more or less comfortable either way. It's not like they let us insert the speculum when you have a pap.

  • I'm loving this exchange ladies! Much needed giggles over here :D
  • @krashke yep!  Both my OB’s office and a different hospital have had me insert it myself then they went from there.
  • Trying to catch up on all these discussions, but this one is great! If my doctors office asked me to insert it I would 100% think they are messing with me hahaha I’ve never heard of that being asked
  • I've had lots of internals and they always have me insert it. its under the sheet so I don't feel weird. I actually prefer that cause I know my angles better than they do lol.

  • Yeah, I’ve never been asked to self insert either.

  • I've had two TV u/s's, and both times the tech inserted the wand in.
I don't feel awkward at all, though. I've also seen a lot of vaginas in my line of work, and I know they've seen just as many if not more than me, and even if I haven't recently shaved, my vagina is far from the worst out there.

  • @izza2 for me it's really more my legs. I haven't shaved them in, uh.... I'm not sure? But I'm pretty sure I've reached the max length of my leg hair at this point... so...
  • So in the actual radiology dept (not my OB's office), the rooms are REALLY small (or at least the two I've been in; unsure if there are more lol), and one time I got a male tech and one time a female. I usually don't care AT ALL if my doctors are male or female, but it turns out that if it's male, then a female nurse has to come babysit in the room, which I understand, but that was the time DH was with me. So it was me, DH, tech and nurse in this very small room. So now I hope for a female tech just so it's not as claustrophobic lol.
  • @krashke haha yes!!

It is interesting to me that some don’t.  I just assumed it was common practice since I have never had them do it any other way.
  • My female doctors have always inserted it themselves.  But I had a male doctor once and he had me insert it myself.  It was the most awkward thing I've had to do at a doctors office!

  • Do you guys want to learn something fun I learned from my two friends who went to med school about how they learn how to do rectal/vaginal exams? (Note: they each went to different schools, and both schools did it this way, but I have no idea if this is true across the board)
  • @miz_liz the teacher is both the teacher and the patient ;)

I know they're all doctors, but I would just find that so so so awkward as a student, lol. And I am NOT a squeamish person.

  • @RatParade no, but it's like a room full of students (I'm guessing a small group? but I didn't ask), and the teacher sort of bends over or goes up in stirrups, and they all sort of... take turns I guess? And the teacher critiques as they go. I guess it's easier because the teacher can feel what they're doing inside, too? IDK. But apparently the teachers who do this ONLY DO THIS. So like, all day they go to different classes and just get probed.
