Baby Names

Josephine Iris

We are team green and having a heck of a time finding a girl name. After posting here before, the two that have stayed on the list were Rosalie and Juliet. I love both names, but I have trouble visualizing having a daughter with either of those names. It probably doesn't make sense, but that's my hangup.

I hear Josephine thrown around here a lot, but it was never really on my radar until last night. What do you think of Josephine Iris? A bonus is that my great grandfather was named Joseph, so it is a family name to an extent.

My only issue is that I *hate* the nickname Josie. I don't particularly care for Jo, either. Is Joey a terrible nickname for a girl? Siblings are Catherine (Kate) and Andrew (Andy). We use their full names and nicknames pretty equally.

Re: Josephine Iris

  • I love Josephine. Your other two are great choices as well.

How about “Jo” or just “J” for a nickname.  I don’t mind Joey as a nickname, but also dislike Josie as well.

  • Not a fan of Jo (or JoJo or any variants). Husband is Justin and I call him J, otherwise that would be an option!
  • Hmmm LJ for “Little J” here is a list of Josephine nicknames I found. Some are a stretch, but some are cute. I like JuJu and Sephy.

Jo, Josie, Joey, Joie, Josette, Fifi, Fina, Phina, Jody, Posy, JoJo, Effie, Poppy, Sadie, Sephy, Fietje, Sophie, Fifine, Juju
  • I️ like Josephine Iris but I️ also think Josie and Jo are cute nicknames.  Keep in mind that even if you choose a nn you like better, she might ask people to call her Josie or Jo when she is older.
  • Josephine Iris is fantastic!

A play on something not Jo would be my choice for a nn, Fifi, Effie, Posey, or Fina

  • I happen to like Josie and Jo; I also think Joey is fine for a little girl as a nn. Makes me think of Dawson’s Creek. But no one in her age bracket will ever know that lol

Lovely name, but it's true you sometimes can't help a nn! Are you okay if friends call her those when she is older? You never have to, obviously, but if you absolutely cannot stand them.... I don't know if I would do it. I like Joey and hope it sticks! I know a Josephine who goes by joey.

Joey feels 100% boy to me.  I like the other suggestions of Fina and LJ for Little J (especially since you call your husband J!)

  • Have you considered Iris Josephine? That would prevent the nickname issue and flows very nicely.
  • I personally don’t choose names that I don’t like the natural or common nicknames. I love the name Josephine!

  • Josephine Iris is a terrific name! Be warned though, you may be able to control nicknames until they are about 10 or so, but after that, they pick it. I have a friend who named her boy Andrew but hated "Andy". He picked Andy by the time he was 7 and refused to be called anything else. He's 19 now and still an Andy!
