Question for Teacher Friends

I'm almost 10 weeks with my second baby. I teach 3rd graders. I'm wondering when you're telling your students that you're pregnant. I'm definitely showing more than my first but they're young. I can't remember with my first when I told my class. What are your plans?

Re: Question for Teacher Friends

  • I teach 5-7th grade, every kid gets me for one term every year.   So my seventh- graders have had me for three years now,  and some of them guessed last week. I confirmed,  as I'm almost in 2nd tri anyway (13 weeks this past Thursday). Some of my sixth- graders heard from them,  and then I have a few fifth- graders that are siblings of seventh- graders who have asked me privately. Most of the fifth- graders are oblivious though.  I'll end up telling my next group sooner rather than later as my stomach appears to be rapidly expanding...

  • Back when I was teaching, I told around 12 weeks but they were middle schoolers and had already figured it out.

  • I teach fifth grade and plan on telling them at about the 13 week mark, which will be around Thanksgiving for me. I'm actually going to play a review game with them and the answer is going to be "Mrs. ----- is having a baby!" They will be thrilled I'm sure!
  • I teach 5-6 graders. I’m not telling until after winter break. I wear an art smock everyday so they can’t see the bump.
  • I teach kindergarten. I have not announced yet. I am waiting until after my next appointment I think; which is November 13.
  • I was teaching high school special education my last pregnancy. I told them around 22 weeks when we returned from winter break. Some of them knew because they had parents who are friends with my mom and they knew my mom was going to be a grandma, but most of them were surprised.
  • I told my teen class, but I'm not announcing to anyone else. I like to keep my work life and private life as separate as possible, and I don't want to discuss my body every time I come into the studio if I can help it. When I was pregnant with J it was constant questions and assumptions and it felt super intrusive to be asked the same questions once an hour every week for months.

I plan to tell peiple that I'd rather not discuss it when it does inevitably come up.
  • I don’t think I’m going to tell them? Someone will eventually ask and then it’ll seep out but I just don’t feel the need to formally tell them. I’m also a FTM though so I won’t start showing until about thanksgiving most likely. If it becomes too obvious  and they’re too polite to ask I’ll whisper it to a few kids in my home room  and they can spread it but I’m not super comfortable telling everyone at once.

  • I never actually told my high schoolers the first time around, formally. It will eventually be brought up in each of my classes through questions or me slyly bringing it up. I was in the second trimester the first time. 2 of my classes brought it up this time, but not the others. They probably care a lot less than younger kids.
  • Last time I told my fourth graders around 19 weeks. I was able to wear a lot of sweaters to cover the bump until then. When I decided to tell them it was hot at school that day and I needed to take off my sweater and my shirt underneath made it very obvious. I told them I had been keeping a big secret from them and turned to the side and asked if anyone could guess. They lost their minds. It was fun telling them and they were all so excited. I put up a gender guessing chart and once we found out a name suggestion list- my husband and I got a huge kick out of that.
  • I am an elementary school counselor. I am not announcing to my coworkers till after my appt on Thurs which will be just about 13 weeks. After that I don't plan to make a formal announcement to students. One has already asked (bigger faster the second time around I guess) and I am sure others will soon.
  • @lifeisnot2fear, my administrative team knows and have for awhile. I had some spotting early on and had some calls to the doctor. I've told my team and close friends at work. I told someone today and she said she wondered when she saw me last week. lol I'm only 10 weeks! I'm not hiding anything! We usually have our announcements at faculty meetings. Our November one got cancelled so I guess it'll be a big "shocker" in December when I'm 15-16 weeks along.

As for my 3rd graders, I'll wait until I know what we're having unless someone asks. Thank you everyone!

  • I'm a high school teacher. I told my students after winter break last time around 20 weeks. I waited until the anatomy scan and the quad screen. I hope to wait until after the quad screen at 16 weeks this time if I can hide it long enough. I'm not a stick, so I think I just look a little extra fluffy right now and not obviously pregnant.  :D I'm definitely showing sooner this time.
  • I'm a 6-8 librarian. I have a couple of 8th graders I told early on, because I used to coach them, and they knew I was going through Infertility treatments for the past couple of years. Also, due to coaching, I'm friends with several school parents, and so they saw when we posted last week on FB. Again, if they are my FB friend, they also know of the IF rounds. From there, I'm not really announcing. If a student asks me, I will answer.

I will probably make some general statement near March, when we are getting ready for state testing, because I normally coordinate all if it (which occurs in April and May) and will be handing over the reigns this year, since I *should* be gone before testing is over.
