Carter's sizing

I'm not understanding the Carter's sizing at all! It goes.. Nb 3m 6m 9m 12m...
What i don't get is everyone said 3m means 0-3 but the Carter's onsies in 3m only match up in size with all the other 3-6 I have then the 6m only matches up with the 6-9 I have! So it goes from newborn to 3-6 months!?  Carter's 3m doesn't match up at all with my 0-3 onsies their alot bigger! I put my Carter's 3m with 3-6 stuff and Carter's 6m with 6-9. Hardly have any 0-3 onsies and a ton of 3-6!

Re: Carter's sizing

  • According to some sizing charts I have seen online, this is what I took from them: 0-3 = 3, 3-6 = 6, 6-9 = 9. I have not held up sizes to compare, just strictly going off the weight charts.

  • My first child was pretty average sir and wore NB for the first month and then went into 3 months, around 3-4 months she moved to 6 months and then pretty much on que as she got to six, nine, twelve, etc. she would move up in size.
  • I've never found Carters stuff to be too big for the stated size, it seems their stuff always fit when it was supposed to. GAP on the other hand....I don't know what giant baby they are sizing for, but their stuff is always WAY too big.

  • So I've found Carter's to be truest to size for DD. Even when comparing sizes between brands, keep in mind that a lot of brands cut clothes differently. Since you're going to have a squishy baby, they tend to fill up whatever they're put in (i.e. if one brand is shorter, it's also usually a bit wider and so they all end up fitting about the same. For us, Carter's just tended to fit the *best*). Also, a "6 mo" piece of clothing should fit up until 6 months technically. We usually found that DD fit into the next size up about 2 months before (so at 4 months she was in 6 month clothes) and they fit well for about a month after (so until she was 7 months). It's always good to have a few different brands on hand because some of them will fit for a longer period of time, depending on your baby.

TL;DR - Carter's claims they are good up until X months (so they can wear 6 months through age 6 mo), so they usually look a little bigger, but we found they fit great. Always have multiple brands because some things do end up fitting longer than others.
  • There is no true size in my opinion. You take a 0-3 or 3 month onesie from 6 different brands and they will be 6 different sizes... I just go by whatever fits at the time...

  • Carter’s is pretty tts. Just think like @ktcakes87 said. 0-3=3, 3-6=6 etc

carters seems to me to be fairly true to size, but that honestly depends on how big your baby is. My baby is not quite 4.5 months old, and she's already in some 6-9. But she's also in the 95th percentile for weight and height.

I agree with the others who said 3=0-3, 6=3-6, etc. See if carters has a weight guideline on the tag. Many of mine do and that is probably the best way to figure it out.
  • So for those of us with bins of hand-me-downs, when we sort by "size" we should go off of not just the label, but the look of the garments in our hands? I think I did this...there were some Gerber clothing that seemed so much smaller than the rest of its pile that I moved it down a bin.

absolutely. gerber is at least one full size smaller than practically everyone else. you can start with the tag sizes and then move pieces around based on how it lines up in reality.

definitely do this AFTER things are washed, as well, because some cotton stuff shrinks like crazy! it's a fine line to walk, if you're trying not to wash stuff too far in advance to preserve the ability to return / exchange in the event that it ends up being the wrong season for your kid

  • @Amber_Waves Yup. Once baby is born, you can pick a onsie or sleeper that fits them really well and use it as a marker on other clothes to see what 'fits' currently, what's too big to save for later and what's too small. That's what I did with DS
