@SLC1102 Do you mean you're having problems with this app? I can't use it on my mobile for the last week. If I try, there are no reply or love it options so I can only read. It sucks. For some reason it works on my iPad which helps but it's not as convenient.
Yep, the bump mobile app. It's annoying. Looks like there's now a posted message from IT that they're working it though....guess we'll see.
@fraufarbissina I second checking the car seat. Just get a bag that it fits in so that it is protected during all the transport. Also, most airlines don't charge to check car seats and strollers.
@fraufarbissina you can buy a travel bag for it with wheels to make it easier to transport. They will let you check that and the stroller at the gate for free.
@fraufarbissina second the gate check. It's a pain lugging it all the way to the gate, but if you don't get free checked luggage you would have to pay. We are traveling at the end of this month and are probably just going to pay the 25 each way to check the bag with our other luggage so we don't need to carry it all the way to the gate.
Sounds like checking a car seat at the gate is the way to go. I like the idea of getting a wheelie travel bag for it because lord knows we'll already have tons of other stuff with us. Thanks everyone!
@fraufarbissina I checked it at the counter and picked it up in baggage claim. I don’t really see the point in dragging it all the way to the gate. Also, every airline I’ve checked a car seat with has put it in a thick plastic bag.

The only reason I'm hesitant to do that is in case the luggage gets lost.
@fraufarbissina my friend let me borrow this really cool contraption that allows you to wheel around a convertible car seat, but in a way that your kid can sit in it and be pulled like a mini stroller. It was pretty cool and made it easy to transport the seat around. Also we purchased a second travel stroller - it was $99 but so worth it. Super light, easy to collapse/open and collapsed extremely small. I actually keep it in my trunk at all times for any impromptu walks while we’re out.
I was in a wedding 4 weeks after having DD- the woman helping all of us was able to help me figure out what size. Honestly, boobs are the huge concern. Literally and figuratively. She had me go two dress sizes up for that reason. I ended up taking in a little on the waist but the rest was perfect bc at the time my boobs were ginormous.

Yeah I like to avoid baggage claim if I can so that nothing gets lost and we can get outta the airport asap. I may not be able to avoid it this time with the pack n play, though.
@Ceridwen77 those sound handy! We probably don't travel enough to justify spending money on any gadgets. I have been thinking about getting a second stroller anyway though so maybe that one is doable.
So I think we'll be flying to visit in-laws in December - my daughter will be 11 months at that point. What do you do about a car seat once you land?
We took the car seat with us for DS. We used it on the plane and had it available for use once we landed.
ETA- after I posted this all the other replies showed up. The bump app is sucking lately.
So I agree with others- since it's a shorter flight you can check it. Amazon has bags you can buy for a reasonable price- some with wheels, some like a backpack. We also purchased a "cheapie" car seat for trips, as our main one is bigger and bulky.
@fraufarbissina I still have a page to go so this may have already been mentioned but the FAA recommends a car seat for pretty much all little ones (they have a list of approved ones online, though I think any that will fit are typically allowed) but if you plan on holding your daughter the whole time, you can just check a car seat by itself, or a lot of rental places (especially in airports) offer car seat rentals as an add on, just like a gps in terms of "extras"
ETA: I knew I should have read the second page before replying lol

I've seen some people post here that they are looking already for daycare/childcare. It surprised me because it honestly never occurred to me that I'd have to look this early. Is this mostly for people who are going back to work shortly after the baby is born? I'm planning to take a year of mat leave, so I assumed I had some time to sort that out, but maybe I'm wrong!
@thunderberry honestly before DS I had started looking before we ever even got pregnant but that's because we lived in a very rural area and we were in a terrible financial situation so we needed to figure out if it was even going to be possible and not lose our house lol I've been blessed with DH because we're much better off than I ever could have been with my ex (he never wanted to work. ever.) but for me it was still nice to have an idea of my options.
I don't think theres any right or wrong way though

@thunderberry Not sure where you're located, but here in the US we typically get at most 12 weeks' maternity leave. In cities, daycares can have reeeeeallly long wait lists (like, years long), so it's necessary to get on the list as early as possible if you'll have to go back to work when the baby is 3 months old.
@abhphilly ugh I miss working somewhere that offered up to 12 weeks. Our current company offers nothing. Literally. Not a single day. I have to take short term disability at 60% pay (which does NOT have taxes taken out, meaning I'll be making less than half my salary) and FMLA will protect my job for up to 12 weeks. I will sadly probably go back around 6 weeks.....

@ladystinson That's kind of what I meant by 12 weeks. We get 6 weeks short term disability and then can either get 60% pay (maybe even 50%?) or use all of our vacation days but get 100% pay for those for the last 6 weeks.
You guys are freaking me out with the daycare searches (FTM). I will be going back to work at 12 weeks and I haven't looked into anything yet. I'm hoping my retired MIL will volunteer to babysit for a few months, but she doesn't even know I'm pregnant yet. I only work 4 days a week and I live in large metro area, so I just assumed I'd find something when needed. Maybe I'm naive.
I'm not aware of any local companies that specifically offer paid maternity leave. That would be awesome!! I have a government job and I have to use a combo of short term, vacation/sick time, and unpaid leave for my FMLA covered 12 weeks. It still makes me so mad that the US doesn't offer paid maternity leave, unlike the majority of all other countries.
@thunderberry@desertdweller21 with DS, MIL watched him so it wasn’t on my radar. But I got on it this time because we have pretty limited options for infant care and we would prefer not to do in-home. A lot of places give priority to current families and their babies over new families. I already put this baby on the waiting list for DS’s place for fall of 2019 because they only take 12 kids in that class and the give priority to staff and students at the college and then current families.
Interestingly I had the opposite experience with daycare interns of city size. We encountered no wait lists when we lived in San Jose. When we moved to a smaller city, that's when we discovered impacted day care.
I say say make a few inquiries to better understand what your situation is. If you discover a lot of the daycares are impacted, then I would start looking into wait lists. If not, then you can hold off.
Thanks @sharkmama39 and @mileswithmyles I'll look into a couple and see if there are wait lists. I'm crossing my fingers my MIL will want to provide daycare for the first few months (she loves babies so much she volunteered at a hospital nursery and this is her first grandchild).
I am so jealous of you that get leave with pay. Even 50-60% of pay sounds amazing to me. I work for a super small company, so I get nothing. I can use all my PTO, but my company doesn't offer ST disability and DH's company doesn't offer it for spouses. And then plans you can buy individually don't usually cover maternity leave. I was fortunate last time and since I work with a CPA, we work overtime during tax season and he let me save up that time and take it off paid. But I still could only get enough for 6 weeks and then took one unpaid. I had to put him in daycare at only 7 weeks.
With DD my company offered nothing. I had enough vacation and time saved up over the 7 years I'd been here to take 12 weeks off, but that pretty much wiped out my time. Reliable rumor has it they will be offering 10 weeks paid leave in 2018, and I'll have enough time accumulated to take another 6 on top of that. Since this is my last baby, I'm going for broke.
Maternity leave is honestly the saddest part of this journey IMHO. I work for government and last year leadership approved up to 12 weeks of paid leave for any employee working over a year prior to leave. You have to use all vacation days, sick days, etc. I also have short term disability which I'll use to get a few more weeks off. I'm so jealous of countries that value the importance of leave for moms, dads, and partners.
ladystinson So many other countries have such better Maternity leave. The USA needs to take some notes. @desertdweller21 Me too. My mom offered to watch the baby for the first year but we would like to enroll part-time at 6 months for the socialization.

I took a year off with my first (Canadian) and we didn't start looking until DS was about 4 mo old. However my doctor has told me we are in a baby boom this year so I might need to look sooner this time around. I'm hoping to get this one into the same dayhome I have DS at currently because it is amazing
The perks of working for myself is I’ve been able to semi slack when I feel awful. The cons is that my money coming in has reflected that. And it will be the same for post partum. Double edged sword.
@abhphilly ahh gotchya. I worked for a bank when I had DS and we got 6 weeks for vaginal and 8 weeks for c/s then you could take and additional 4 weeks short term at full pay before tax... I miss that lol
