Mailing Birth Announcements

Hi everyone,
I am starting to compile a list of addresses so that I can get things sort of rolling before LO arrives and we send out birth announcements. How many of you are planning on sending these out? Are you planning on using something like Shutterfly? I'm trying to find more options to get the cost down. I think we're going to use our wedding guest list (only 3 years ago) as a starting point and we are looking at about 100 cards. Am I crazy to want to send these out? Also, I dont want to go crazy on price... Thoughts everyone?

Re: Mailing Birth Announcements

  • I think we'll do them. We don't do Christmas cards (and I refuse to start because I don't want to have to do them, lol) and I think I said in the past I wouldn't do a mailed birth announcement, but I feel like I should, especially for older family members who don't have FB (or who have been unfriended for political reasons, lol, oops).

I was planning on doing some online thing like Shutterfly, but I haven't actually looked into it. For our save the dates and wedding invitations, DH just designed them and then we ordered them from Staples which was cheaper than using a template from elsewhere, so maybe we'll do something like that again.

  • We're planning to do combo birth announcement / holiday cards since the twins aren't likely to arrive much later than the first week or so of December, with a good chance that they'll be born as early as Thanksgiving. I've used VistaPrint and Shutterfly for holiday cards in the past. You can usually find groupons or promo codes for both of those to get the price pretty low.
  • I'm hoping to do a combo Xmas card/birth announcement on back - our newborn photos are scheduled for 12/15 so I'm hoping she will at least send me 1 image I could use for the birth announcement.  We send out about 50-75 Christmas cards every year so I don't think 100 is insane @abcola.  I like doing shutterfly or vista but they get you big time on shipping. I think last year I did Walgreens and they came out great

  • If she comes early, I'll probably do dual-purpose birth announcements and holiday cards-- otherwise, I probably won't send any of either this year.  I just spent a life savings on stamps for baby shower thank you cards, I can't do it again so soon!
  • We’re planning to do combo birth announcement/holiday cards (probably more like New Years cards with timing in mind).  I’ll use Minted because they do free address printing, so you just upload your spreadsheet and your envelopes come addressed which saves so much time. Their prices are decent - not the lowest, not the highest, but they seem to run a lot of sales.

  • I have a stationery problem lol so I am definitely sending birth announcements. Not to mention for a long time before we were even ttgp I would put our favorite names in announcements on TinyPrints to see how they looked in print, so it's one of the things I've been looking forward to most!  Sorry I can't think of cheaper places - maybe Minted? Or Paperless Post recently partnered with Papersource and they might have some?  Also, and I know this is technically stealing, but generally you can create a proof of your card on those sites, right click and save it or take a screenshot as a png or tiff, and then print those yourself. It really only works if you're not printing it any bigger than ~4x6 though. It works pretty well for email though.

I may even order birth announcements to then include in my Christmas cards! Since I'm pretty obsessive about those too... my collection from last year... and I may have purchased 3 or 4 more boxes since :grimace:

  • @whiska Holy hell, girl! You really do love you some Christmas cards!  :D

Like most of you, I'll likely also be adding a picture of the new baby to my Christmas cards and letting that serve as the "announcement". (And let's be honest, my mother is basically the town crier and everyone will know within hours of the birth anyways.) I use Cardstore.com to make customized Christmas cards every year and they stamp and mail the cards for me, so I don't have to do much work at all. They tend to run decent promos around early December and I don't typically send more than 50 cards, so it doesn't break the bank. And honestly, if I'm not in the mood to send anything this year, I'm not going to beat myself up.

  • Still debating if I want to send them out or not. We didn’t with DD1 but I feel like our parents want to send them to their friends so we’ll see.
  • I think I'll probably send them out, but to a pretty small group of people. I plan to use Vistaprint; I used it for all of our wedding stuff and it was much cheaper than other sites, and I was very happy with the quality and service. They have coupons all of the time for different things too. I just ordered a print from them today for the kiddo's room!
  • We usually do a New Year's Card and this year, it will probably be a birth announcement like the one below on the front and our typical job/farm/travel updates on the back.  I usually swipe a ton of inspiration from what is commercially available and then have it printed at overnightprints.com.  I print labels at home.

  • I'm assuming babe won't be here in time for us to get the photos done (tentatively booked for Dec 21) and then ordered and arrive to me in time to send them out... Being in Canada I literally have to order my Christmas cards be Nov 10 in order for them to get to me in time to address them and send them out, it's a pain in the butt.
We've done both Shutterfly and Vistaprint in the past and I think Shutterfly quality is 100x better, so we will likely go with them again. We did for DS and I really liked how they turned out, and we just used them as a double for Thank You cards for people who just sent random gifts that didn't arrive by the time my shower thank yous went out.

  • We did them for DD--I can't remember whether I did Shutterfly or Snapfish--whichever gave me a better coupon, probably. I am thinking about doing our Christmas card early (with no new baby pics) and then a New Year's card/baby announcement after, but we'll see if I have enough energy for both! I love sending Christmas cards & usually make several designs, but I also want the baby to get his/her own birth announcement and not just get lumped in with the family Christmas card (cause babies near Christmas often get the shaft on birthdays, and I don't want to start that at birth!)

  • I'm planning on sending out this combined holiday card/birth announcement from Minted. I send holiday cards out every year, so I'm planning on using that recipient list and adding in anyone else that attended my baby shower. I'll get the address list ready to go, then I'll just pop in her birth information (date, weight, height, etc.) and my favorite picture from the newborn photography shoot. Depending on when LO is born, they may be sent out a little after Christmas, but that's ok with me.

  • NGL, this thread gives me massive anxiety. I haven't even finished our shower thank yous yet.   :s

  • I’ll def be doing a mailer birth announcement.  Itll
probably be a New Years card, though. Thatll
guve us time to get the newborn photos back and I can slowly address envelopes or something. I’ll just be using my shower addresses, plus a few
more peeps.  I love sending out cards, so I’m excited to do it!
  • I usually do Christmas cards so this year I'll have a cute picture of the baby on the card. She's due 12/6 so even if I'm late, I'm still in the clear. I did look into newborn photography in my area and cannot justify spending that much! I am hoping to do an at-home photo shoot and try my best.

  • @kyrwyn  SAME. And by haven't finished I mean I haven't started.
  • I always do Christmas cards, but I'm going to skip this year and do combined New Years/Birth Announcement cards.  I'll get them out sometime in January and consider that a win.

  • We'll probably do a New Years card/announcement. I'm not a pro by any means, but I have a nice camera and did DS' NB pics and they turned out really well so I hope to do the same this year pending this little lady's arrival date.
