Questions Week of 10/23

It’s about time for a new one of these... so who’s got a question?

Re: Questions Week of 10/23

  • I just had my a/s last week (Friday) and they called me and left a message this evening (late afternoon while I was at practice) and told me they had results from my ultrasound. However, when I was in my appointment that followed my a/s, they said everything looked good and they'd only call if something looked different than their initial reading. I'm super anxious right now. I listened to the message on my drive home and then just bawled because I'm so worried. I know I can't control it, and part of me was over tired and over hungry, but I'm just worried.

All I can think of is that the sonographer mentioned that baby's abdomen and head were slightly smaller (by less than a week, if I recall correctly) and baby's femur was a couple days ahead. Everything looked great, and he said baby looks good (although he's not a doctor, so we understand a radiologist does the formal reading). We had our appointment a bit after that, and she had the information and no notes to share with us, which she said was a great sign.

Does anyone have any experience with this or insight? I hate waiting for the next morning to call. With my luck at the clinic, I won't get through until tomorrow after school. I need some insight, feedback, or something!

  • @LiveNLove44 I would assume that it’s just standard for this doctor. If you come in for them to speak to you, even if it’s just to tell you everything looks great, they get to charge for an appointment. I know how worried you must be though and I’m so sorry you’re having to deal with this. Just try to breathe for now, and hopefully when you get in to the doctor tomorrow, it’s all good news.

  • @LiveNLove44 It is possible that they didn't get all the measurements they needed or just want to remeasure some things in a few weeks. (I panicked when I had to have a second a/s with the MFM for DD, but it was because they couldn't get all the pictures of her heart they needed.) I hope it is nothing.  <3

  • @ShawnnaO I had this OB with my last two kids, so I'm hoping that maybe it's just a change in their protocol with results!

@becausescience the sonographer came back out to the waiting area to get me back in because he missed a measurement. Part of me feels like he was really thorough when double checking, but I'm still hoping that maybe he just needed more or different pictures of the right angles of something!

  • Anyone here had to have a fetal echocardiogram? There is some protocol in the US that all IVF babes have to have one, so that'll get done in November. And little man didn't make it any better at my anatomy scan by flipping around during the cardiac exam. Just want to know what I'm in for!

  • @LiveNLove44 Hopefully just calling to give the official report that all is well. Hugs, girl. Keep us posted!
  • @LiveNLove44 were your two other children small when they were born? Like under 6 lbs? If so, they may just want to discuss remeasuring baby in a few weeks. I get growth ultrasounds because my son was iugr. It’s something that more and more OB’s are catching earlier, guidelines are becoming more cautious when it comes to fetal growth. I’m willing to bet it something very minor like that!
  • Thanks @chasingroygbiv

@Gingermom15 both babies were within about half an ounce of each other and both arrived within 2 hours gestationally of one another on 39w0d. They were 7lb 8oz and 7lb 9oz (with rounding). I also personally gain exactly the same each time (like to the 10th of a lb so far at my appointments), so I know that I'm not under-gaining to any degree, right?

From what I've read, having the femur be long is a good sign, but the other two measurements being smaller makes me nervous. For all I know, this isn't related to those things at all, but other than that, I can't think of a single thing that he saw or mentioned that felt out of the ordinary compared to my last two.

  • @cford08 I did with my last ivf pregnancy. It was just like the a/s except it focused totally on the heart. My new ob doesn’t do them for ivf pregnancies so I won’t have one this time.
  • @LiveNLove44 nothing more to add, but all love my dear  <3

  • @LiveNLove44 I got called back in with my first after I was told everything was fine. The Dr on likes everything but another wanted a better picture of her spine. All was well, just needed more images. But it was terrifying, something about a nurse telling you not to worry 5 times in 10 minutes that makes you worry more than ever. I am sure it is just something like that.

  • Thinking of you today @LiveNLove44! Hope you get in early. Like others have said, there are a lot of innocuous reasons for them to want you to come back: missing measurements, pictures not clear, etc.

  • @LiveNLove44 I was called in with DS twice for measurements that they missed or the doctor wanted redone. I know it’s hard to not worry and to stay off the google but hopefully this is just something simple. Let us know. Hugs.
  • @Gingermom15 I didn't realize that was a protocol. My son was 5 lb 12 oz when he was born at 39w 4d, and my MW didn't say anything about this time around (same midwife). He was completely healthy and small babies run in my family, so maybe that's why? I haven't been told I'm getting any additional scans. I did have one around 37/38 weeks with DS because my fundal height wasn't changing. They confirmed that he was on the smaller side, but didn't see any issues.

If your son wasn’t diagnosed IUGR and never dropped percentiles in utero, then it is unlikely you would be getting additional ultrasounds. My son was under 5 lbs at full term and had characteristics of a post term infant (dry, peeling skin, no fat reserves and droopy skin from losing weight before birth). My office will do growth scans if a woman has history of small babies and measurements are small/dropping percentiles.

TW undetected IUGR is often a diagnoses for still born babies, which is why guidelines are becoming a little tighter. At least in my area END TW

@LiveNLove44 This exact thing happened to my coworker who is due in Jan. She had to go in again for more measurements b/c they didn't get everything. They didn't realize this until that afternoon so they had to call her and schedule another.

  • @cford08 I’ve had a fetal echo, and another next week because of our daughter’s heart condition. It’s just like an ultrasound but they’re focused on the heart specifically. It can take quite a while. I don’t have experience with a singleton pregnancy but they’ve warned me that with twins it’ll likely take upwards of 3 hours. I’d give yourself an hour-two hours. Good luck!
  • We found out yesterday that there was a possible “bright spot” on baby’s liver. My doctor is supposed to be looking over the ultrasound images again today and calling me to let me know what he thinks. I’m also having another ultrasound next week to look at his liver again. Has anyone else ever experienced anything like this?

  • Thanks @cford08. The doctor called this afternoon and now we’re looking at a spot on his liver and a possible spot on or around his heart. I have a high risk ultrasound scheduled for Thursday and bloodwork tomorrow. Hoping it’s nothing to worry about, and thankful they were able to get me in fairly quickly.

  • Question: Im going for it and buying a maternity belt. The belt I used last time had great support but was so itchy, uncomfortable, stiff and a mess.

Need suggestions on the best, most comfortable belt you know of! Links would be awesome, if you can swing it.

  • @LiveNLove44 that is stressful, sending positive thoughts to you. If it helps at all to know, I remember with DS he constantly flipped around a lot in my belly (even when he was 35 weeks+ and cramped already, ouch), so there's plenty of time for the cord to unwrap, and plenty of moving around space for baby still to help it unwrap. DS was actually born with the cord wrapped around his neck, but I still delivered vaginally a few days after his due date and he was perfectly healthy.

Also, once baby is moving/kicking consistently and not just flutters, doing kick counts at the same time every day might help ease your mind, there are a bunch of different apps for it that can help track the consistency.
  • @LiveNLove44 and @hollyk224 sending good thoughts and prayers your way!  Like @gazelle319 my DS was actually born with the cord wrapped around his neck too, I also delivered a week late with him and still had him vaginally.  I'm hoping that your LO starts unwrapping that cord quickly!
  • Thinking of you both, @hollyk224 and @LiveNLove44! Please give us updates when you get them!
  • So my MW called with the US results. She said everything looks good, but it was noted that the baby has a very small cyst by her bladder. They are referring to a MFM specialist for a follow-up ultrasound. She didn't have many answers for me. Has anyone else had these findings? Google is no help.
  • I don't have experience, but I hope all is ok, @kalawa.
