We adults don't dress up although I do have a pregnancy skeleton shirt with the skeleton baby on it leftover from my 1st.
My girls are 4.5 and 2 and we have so many dress up clothes that they'll choose from that the day of... I did buy a Belle dress for $6 at a resale store as well as leopard tail and ears for the older one but she has since changed her mind about both, which is what I expected and why we won't go all out on Halloween for at least another year.

We always go to our friends' neighborhood for a little Halloween party and then we set out together to trick or treat because that area goes all out. It will be about 10 families from church so there's usually 30-40 kids. It is crazy but fun. Since it's a school night I think we're going to meet for pictures and snacks at 5:30 and set out by 6.
  • @ivyvines6 oh my gosh what an adorable outfit! I love that
  • @tacosandvirginmargaritas that's the sweetest thing ever!!! <3
  • @SLC1102, ask your neighbors how much candy they buy and how many kids they get. Our area is smaller so when out neighbors said 400-500 kids, we thought they were exaggerating.  Nope. We ran out of candy in an hour and it was too busy to drive and get more. Luckily, another neighbor always gets extra and was super sweet by giving us a big bag to get by with. We rewarded him with beer to drink the next year while he sat outside.

    Good call!
  • Thoughts on the teal pumpkin thing? A friend says she is putting a teal pumpkin on her step to indicate they have non-candy treats for kids too young or with dietary issues... I have mixed feelings. I mean, inclusive is nice, but it kind of is what it is. And I don't like the idea of everyone going to target and buying a bunch of garbage toys to hand out. I'm guessing it'll be the kind of things people put in Birthday favors, that break after one day and go in the garbage. I'm thinking of buying some applesauce pouches, it feels like edible is more in line with the tradition. Has this trend hit anyone else?!?
  • @Pearlvirus We live in the country so we won't have any trick or treaters, but I love the teal pumpkins. If we move to a place that gets kiddos we'll probably do the cheap toys from the front of Target and a separate bowl of candy. As a kid who wasn't allowed to go trick or treating until I was 12, the idea of a kid not getting to participate because of something they can't help is so sad to me!
  • Teal pumpkin is part of why I'm not handing out any candy this year.  I put in fake tattoos and other cheap toy type things.  There's plenty of candy out there for the kids who like candy.

  • Maybe we should just do away with candy as part of this tradition altogether? I mean it's not like it's good for any kid.... change just makes me feel old and tired.

That's a little overboard imo

I don't see what the big deal is?  Like, how dare some people offer things that all kids can enjoy?  Kids who can eat candy are still getting tons of candy.  It's no skin off your back.

  • I can see I was misunderstood. This is not a big deal. The reasons to do it are good ones. And even if I didn't participate, it would make no difference to me if other people did. None of that is what I meant!!

It makes me think bigger thoughts though. About how the US has so few traditions because it is such a 'new' country. Sometimes I think parenting would be a hell of a lot easier if I had cultural traditions and didn't have to think (overthink) every tiny choice. Like I think it is important to be mindful and contemplate how your choices could impact not only your family but also other people and the planet, but sometimes I wish for 'village elders' to just tell me the way we do things. I'm sure if I actually had those rules I would rebel, but maybe I would worry less about doing everything "right". So that spiral is really what makes me tired...
  • Ah I see.  Yeah, that was totally not what i got out of your post.  Sorry for the misunderstanding.

  • H will be a butterfly and A is going to be a "bat witch".  She wanted to be a bat, but of course there were no bat costumes, so she decided she liked the witches dresses, and I was lucky enough to find the witch that was decorated with bats.  Score one for mom.  The past few years, MH and I have done a family theme and dressed up with the girls, but I haven't put any thought into it this year, so haven't decided if I'll dress up or not.

  • DD is going to be a witch. I've got an orange shirt with a jack-o-lantern face on the belly that I'll wear. We're just taking her to TOT, we won't be handing out candy. In our rural area, you drive to a house, let them get their loot, jump back in the car, then drive to the next one. May take her to the town's business TOT, too.
