Share your halloween plans! ST+Ms, what are your kids going as? Do you get a lot of trick or treaters where you live? What kind of candy or non-candy do you give out? Are you dressing up?
My kids were all set to go as dinosaurs, costumes made and everything. Then DS1 today announced that he was going to be Moana. So now he's going to be a Moana-triceratops.
I think I'm not going to bother giving out candy this year, I'll probably just hit up Target and get a bunch of little toys and stuff.
We adults don't dress up although I do have a pregnancy skeleton shirt with the skeleton baby on it leftover from my 1st. My girls are 4.5 and 2 and we have so many dress up clothes that they'll choose from that the day of... I did buy a Belle dress for $6 at a resale store as well as leopard tail and ears for the older one but she has since changed her mind about both, which is what I expected and why we won't go all out on Halloween for at least another year.
We always go to our friends' neighborhood for a little Halloween party and then we set out together to trick or treat because that area goes all out. It will be about 10 families from church so there's usually 30-40 kids. It is crazy but fun. Since it's a school night I think we're going to meet for pictures and snacks at 5:30 and set out by 6.
DS is going as Marshall from Paw Patrol. We don’t get many trick or treaters but will actually be out of town for DH’s business trip so we will be trick or treating in sunny Cali! I will not be dressing up. We do have a costume party to go to but I’m going to wimp out and wear a cute little pumpkin shirt to announce my pregnancy to my aunts and cousins
Every day DD wants to go as something different. She finally decided that we're all going as th PJ Masks. I pulled the trigger and bought stuff for it so now she's stuck with this choice lol
My daughter is going as a cat. I learned a lesson this year. I thought “oh it’ll be fun to go to the Halloween store and let her pick out a costume”! Well she didn’t even care for any of the costumes, just wanted to run around the store like a possessed child, and then I end up buying a $35 cat costume that she will barely wear because I went to this stupid expensive rip off store!! Next year I’m sticking to amazon.
We get a decent amount of trick or treaters but are paranoid we will run out of candy so we over buy. We went to the warehouse store and bought a huge bag of chocolate candy (Reese’s pb cups, snickers, etc) and a huge bag of candy (sour patch kids, Swedish fish, etc). Towards the end of the night if we have a lot of candy leftover we just give out handfuls and then one lucky kid gets the whole bowl dumped in their bag. Last year it was this 7yr old girl with her dad and the look on her face - I still remember it.
@MissusTexas, I like those shirts! I wanted to get one when I was pregnant with DS but I wasn't showing very much. I'm definitely showing this time but I'm too cheap to buy something I'll only wear once.
AFM, DS is going to be a Jedi complete with a "lifesaver" (light saber). Our neighborhood has a Halloween parade where the kids walk in their costumes. Then everyone splits off and goes trick or treating. It's cute. DH is working so I guess we aren't handing out much candy.
We're doing a family costume and I'm overly excited. DD will be a Red Riding Hood, DS will be the wolf, I will be the grandma and DH will be the woodcutter. MIL is going to come help out. Our trick or treat is nuts. Seriously hundreds of kids. You have to just sit outside and constantly hand out candy. Our little subdivision does it on Saturday while our town does it on Halloween so we get a ton of people that aren't "neighbors" and it's kind of annoying in that aspect, but also fun to watch. A lot of neighbors camp out at the end of their driveway with beers and drinks and hand out shots to parents. So we asked MIL to come so she can watch the house while we go to a few houses as a family and then play with the kids while DH and I hand out candy. I'll probably have her come with me to a few houses too so she can get in on the fun. I am also throwing my second kid Halloween party with moms and kids we met through a local moms' group that day. All the kids are around the same age as our twins and have become really close with our kids. MIL is going to come early and help me set up or watch the kids while I set up, either way is a win for me. Super nice of her and she is excited to be here for it all.
DS is going to be Buzz Lightyear. We are going to trick-or-treat in our neighborhood with by BFF, who lives down the street from us. Her son and DS are 6 days apart.
We get a fair amount of trick-or-treaters and leave candy on the porch while we are our with DS. We still have to buy our candy. I’m not dressing up this year.
The toddler is going as a fireman/firetruck. I had to hide the costume after having him try it on because of the siren noises he was making lol. I have some cat ears and I'll just wear leggings and a black shirt.
We bought a chewbacca costume for DS, but he kinda lost his crap when we tried it on him the other day. I'm hoping it was just a mood that day. If not, I have no idea what we will put him in.
We we usually only go to a few houses of people we know and then the parade.
DD1 wants to be a Peep Bunny, from the marshmallow Easter peeps. Which I have not found anywhere so I may need to make it.
DD2 is going to be Wonder Woman, and our dog matches her each year so he's going as Super Dog. It's become a tradition. Last year she was Belle and the dog (a fluffy German Shepherd) was The Beast.
We have a crazy long driveway so no trick or treaters for us, which makes me sad because I grew up in a very active "trick or treating" neighborhood growing up. So we go over to the in laws house because their neighborhood is crazy full and we bring candy to contribute.
Last year was the first Halloween in our new neighborhood. I was warned we get a ton of kids, so I stalked up on candy (like 9 jumbo bags or chocolate and some pencils, erasers, Dracula teeth etc). THOUSANDS of kids came through. We sit up a table outside, there was just a consistent line. Ran out after a few hours. Our neighborhood also does a book drive and hands out books to kids as well, which is really great!
this year, we will be out of town and I'm not sorry to miss the madness!! DS wanted to be a banana ((???)) ... got him the costume and he hates it. Also got a shark and monkey, not sure what he will be! But we will be heading to the east coast where it is cooler. Last year it was 95 degrees in AZ, and his costume was too warm! So many are made with fleece, it's hard here.
DH and I probably won't dress up. But after Halloween we do dress up for the Dias de Los Muertos festival. The face painting is challenging but so fun!
DD wants to be Catboy (PJ Masks) this year, so that's what she'll be. I doubt H and I will dress up. This is our first year in our neighborhood, and it's fairly small, imagine we'll get a handful of kids but not a ton. I will most likely buy candy on Halloween so that it actually lasts until it's time to give it out. H has a killer sweet tooth.
@SLC1102, ask your neighbors how much candy they buy and how many kids they get. Our area is smaller so when out neighbors said 400-500 kids, we thought they were exaggerating. Nope. We ran out of candy in an hour and it was too busy to drive and get more. Luckily, another neighbor always gets extra and was super sweet by giving us a big bag to get by with. We rewarded him with beer to drink the next year while he sat outside.

Thoughts on the teal pumpkin thing? A friend says she is putting a teal pumpkin on her step to indicate they have non-candy treats for kids too young or with dietary issues... I have mixed feelings. I mean, inclusive is nice, but it kind of is what it is. And I don't like the idea of everyone going to target and buying a bunch of garbage toys to hand out. I'm guessing it'll be the kind of things people put in Birthday favors, that break after one day and go in the garbage. I'm thinking of buying some applesauce pouches, it feels like edible is more in line with the tradition. Has this trend hit anyone else?!?

I do Annie's fruit snacks and avoid any candy with nuts or artificial flavors or colors. My thought is if I don't want my own kid eating too much crap, I'm not going to hand it out. And target has packs of pencils, stickers, erasers etc for $1. I don't put a teal pumpkin out, I just have two baskets, candy and not candy. I get not wanting to waste money on crap toys, but everyone should get to enjoy Halloween! Variety is great, imo.
@Pearlvirus I like the teal pumpkins. I'm going with stickers. I kind of think it's not about the allergy free treat you offer, it's letting these kids enjoy Halloween and it's activities. Who cares what type of toy it is. If you are coming from environmental point of view, most of the Halloween candy people don't like is thrown away, too.
@Pearlvirus We live in the country so we won't have any trick or treaters, but I love the teal pumpkins. If we move to a place that gets kiddos we'll probably do the cheap toys from the front of Target and a separate bowl of candy. As a kid who wasn't allowed to go trick or treating until I was 12, the idea of a kid not getting to participate because of something they can't help is so sad to me!
Teal pumpkin is part of why I'm not handing out any candy this year. I put in fake tattoos and other cheap toy type things. There's plenty of candy out there for the kids who like candy.
DS and I are dressing up as minions. We’re staying at a hotel until mid November so no trick or treating or passing out candy but I plan on taking him to whatever halloween activities they have around town.
Maybe we should just do away with candy as part of this tradition altogether? I mean it's not like it's good for any kid.... change just makes me feel old and tired.

I don't see what the big deal is? Like, how dare some people offer things that all kids can enjoy? Kids who can eat candy are still getting tons of candy. It's no skin off your back.
I can see I was misunderstood. This is not a big deal. The reasons to do it are good ones. And even if I didn't participate, it would make no difference to me if other people did. None of that is what I meant!!
It makes me think bigger thoughts though. About how the US has so few traditions because it is such a 'new' country. Sometimes I think parenting would be a hell of a lot easier if I had cultural traditions and didn't have to think (overthink) every tiny choice. Like I think it is important to be mindful and contemplate how your choices could impact not only your family but also other people and the planet, but sometimes I wish for 'village elders' to just tell me the way we do things. I'm sure if I actually had those rules I would rebel, but maybe I would worry less about doing everything "right". So that spiral is really what makes me tired...
The kiddo is going as a box of doughnuts, I’m always rockin’ cat ears when all else fails, and I guess daddy has to stay at home to pass out candy. First Halloween in our new house so I don’t know if we’ll get lots of trick-or-treaters?!
H will be a butterfly and A is going to be a "bat witch". She wanted to be a bat, but of course there were no bat costumes, so she decided she liked the witches dresses, and I was lucky enough to find the witch that was decorated with bats. Score one for mom. The past few years, MH and I have done a family theme and dressed up with the girls, but I haven't put any thought into it this year, so haven't decided if I'll dress up or not.

DD is going to be a witch. I've got an orange shirt with a jack-o-lantern face on the belly that I'll wear. We're just taking her to TOT, we won't be handing out candy. In our rural area, you drive to a house, let them get their loot, jump back in the car, then drive to the next one. May take her to the town's business TOT, too.
So many cute costumes on here! I'm pretty darn excited to have a little baby to dress up next year, if all goes well
We have a few parties this weekend that I still haven't figured out a costume for. I considered doing something pregnancy related but a lot of people don't know I'm pregnant yet so I don't want to make other people's parties all about me announcing my pregnancy. I'll probably figure out something half assed at the last minute.
Halloween night I'm looking forward to. We get tons of kids in our neighbourhood, generally around 400 or more. Most neighbours sit out on their porches to hand out candy and it's a lot of fun seeing all the cute kids! I'm a little sad I can't enjoy it with a couple ciders like I usually do though
We just took DS out this weekend to get his costume. DH and I had grand plans of doing a family costume. Or so I thought. Then time ticked away and his enthusiasm faded, and then we got to the costume shop and just ended up grabbing a Batman suit for DS. Now DH is suggesting he might pull out one of his old concert band tuxedos and claim he's Alfred. I'm wearing this because we'll finally be announcing to extended family and at our work places after our dating ultrasound on Monday.

This year, my daughter (4) will be a cat witch. (She's obsessed with cats. Target had this costume, perfect!) About a month ago she wanted to be a zombie cheerleader, and two months ago she wanted to be Tamatoa from Moana.
DH and I will not be dressing up.
Last year, DD wanted to be Louise from Bob's Burgers, so I went as Linda, and DH was Bob. Super easy, I loved it! Some people didn't get it, and thought DD was piglet. bwahaha.

So many cute costumes on here, DS went back and forth on what he wanted to be. I still am not sure he 100% comprehends what Halloween is about. We will be in the Lake Tahoe area on Halloween, hoping we will be able to do some trick or treating in the area we are staying. This past weekend we went to a town Halloween party for the kids. DS was in a great mood at the beginning, this is him in his ghost costume. A little grumpy ghost!
We live way back off of a really busy road so there wont be anyone walking through for trick or treat DS is going as Steven from minecraft (God, help me...) DSS will sadly be with his mother and we're never privy to what he'll be with her, she usually makes it all about her and picks the theme as well as his costume... ugh I found a really cute zip-up "pajama" costume for me, it's a kangaroo with a joey in the pouch, that's how I'll be announcing at work during our costume contest. No clue what DH is going as, he's talked about going as Steve Irwin (khaki shorts and shirt... possibly carrying a stingray..... sigh, it's a little funny but not. Steve Irwin was my hero lol I was a zoo keeper right around when he hit the height of his popularity so I'm torn. DH isn't doing it from a mean place, he loved his shows and message too. I dont know)
ETA: @JNCPro3130 DS calls light saber life savers too! I'm sorry but that is one of the cutest things ever! @Pearlvirus I ended up starting a semi-teal pumpkin thing a few years ago. In our area it was more because of little siblings than allergies, but I started getting some stickers and such and now I've added some smaller toys, but with the stickers even the littles were able to have something that they could actually experience instead of candy they won't be able to eat. We also have a close family friend whose son was allergic to nearly everything... the kid was on basically baby food until he was around 5 because it's easier to keep track of the ingredients (other than what the parents made at home of course) so it was nice to be able to get a list of allergy safe foods/candies from her as a jumping point. I think it's a great idea, but it definitely depends on your area.
